- In late 1971, a 24-year-old Elton performed his just-released album Madman Across The Water in its near entirety in front of a BBC television studio audience in London. Broadcast on BBC2’s Sounds for Saturday on April 1972, Elton delivered a captivating solo recital of ‘Indian Sunset’. Nearly fifty years later, the song continues to astonish audiences as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, where Elton describes the profound lyric about the demise of the Native American population as a “a two-and-a-half hour movie”.

I read that so often on YT, how this and that song is under appreciated. We're listening to it right, a song almost half a century old, so it can not be *that* under appreciated.

It's genuinely incredible how many amazing songs these two have made. I listen to Elton every day and somehow find yet another beautiful piece every day. This song came on automatically while I was listening to music during calculus and I had to stop myself from bawling my eyes out in the middle of class on the very first listen. Unbelievably talented.

i cry whenever i listen to it. The beautiful melody just seems to capture the great tragedy that happened to the Native Americans so well. RIP those that died so long ago now but are not forgotten. None are free 'til all are free!

by Tupac samples and repeats the lyrics, "Those who wish to follow me I

hills of gold," and mixes together the first half of the line, "And
peace to this young warrior" and half of "without the sound of guns."
In my opinion his finest work with Bernie's incredible lyrics.....Elton and Bernie will never be equaled in any genre of Music.....never.....

My brother got the cassette album when he traveled abroad in 1978. We lived in a quiet, little town near Bangalore, India. I fell in love with all the songs, especially Indian Sunset. One of the most underrated songs in music history. Simple lyrics, soulful rendering. Truly blessed to have heard it.
One of his best songs off of his best album.
One of his best albums for sure, but i think it's not quite as strong after this track. I prefer Tumbleweed Connection, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Captain Fantastic, but of course it's all a matter of taste.
I can't even convey how thrilling it is to search for this song and see a LIVE version come up. Dayyam. His 70-80 output cemented his place as one of the immortals.

@@mizofan agreed, plus literally every live performance between those years are just unbelievable. I've ALWAYS believed that the mark of a truly great performer is their ability to sing live (for example, Freddie Mercury and Queen at live aid) and by god I've yet to find a Elton song that's better in studio than live. Either the live version is a beat for beat perfect replica of the studio version (which in of itself is insanely impressive) or it becomes its own unique experience, with minute but beautiful, stumble changes throughout that truly make each performance it's own masterpiece. Just an amazing artist

his concerts in the 2010s, including on his farewell tour. He told in 2011 that it is one of his favorites to play live. "Nobody knows that song at all," he said. "It's an obscure track from , and it gets a standing ovation every night. It's a six-minute movie in a song."
its almost impossible to imagine that the same elton performing here is the same elton performing today. his voice is almost completely unrecognizable. the vocal range he displays here is a testament to his incredible talent

He had surgery in his throat is the 80's and that changed his voice. Also, he's is 72 now. I went to his concert last November and can assure it is the best concert I have ever attended. He's amazing!
Elton also smoked a lot of pot in the early days. That can mess up your voice too.

I honestly never looked into the history of elton until I watched the movie recently. I was born in 75 so was a pup when he was on this journey. I have been captivated by so many of his performances I have watched. See this man in a new light now, absolutely phenomenal musician and singer and Bernies song writing is beyond brilliant. This is not just a song. Is a poem. Is a story. Is an epic melody. Madman Across The Water was the second CD I ever bought in my life. I still have it. This song remind me my great grand father. I was living with him, when I bought this CD. I loved him a lot. And every time I listen to this song, I remind him.

The '71 Sounds for Saturday special is my favorite Elton performance and my favorite live performance from any artist. The playing and vocals are absolutely perfect on every track.

An aside: My boyfriend and I and a few other North Texas State U students were actors in a video made by film students to go with this song/album on his tour of that time. .We got the red carpet treatment and the preview in Dallas, but I've been unable to find it online (of course, it was late 1971 or early 1972) Still love the passion expressed in this song and have to play it every once in awhile....

When my best friend died suddenly and completely unexpectedly a few months ago, the line " this I can't believe I said, I can't believe our warlord's dead" came into my head in the first hour after hearing the news. I then sang the whole song in my backyard, surprisingly remembering the entire lyric, even though I'd only listened to the song a handful of times since the 70's

Beautiful voice he had when was young.
He still does. Just different. But even if he didn't have the throat surgery,who has the same voice in 60's and 70's that they had in their 20's. He's lucky that he is here to sing at all after what he went through in life.I'm grateful he's still here.

This is a completely underrated song, the melody, the chords, the story. Imagine being in the audience watching this. You'd be absolutely blown away. A lot of Elton John songs lyrics can be a little bit flamboyant and meaningless but the narrative to this song is world class.
