- ‘Border Song’, the first single from Elton John’s 1970 eponymous LP, was covered by a number of artists early on with none more exhilarating than Aretha Franklin. “Bernie and I were so dumbfounded and excited beyond words,” Elton revealed upon hearing the news. “She was such an idol of mine then, let alone throughout the years, so for her to have covered this song meant so much to us at that early stage of our career.”
This clip is from BBC Elton John in Concert, recorded May 22nd1970, two mere months after the single was released in the UK.

Elton John - Border Song (BBC In Concert 1970)
/ eltonjohn
One of Elton's most underrated songs.
Pretty incredible that Bernie was only 19 when he wrote this song!
"He's my brother, let us live in peace". Words to live by.
Elton and Bernie...what did we do to deserve them?
Holy Moses, I have been overwhelmed. I have seen Rocketman four times in two weeks.
“let us strive to find a way to make our hatred cease…what’s his color? i don’t care.”
His piano teacher said he’d never amount to anything
Elton wrote the last verse of this beautiful song. He was so kind and ahead of his time. JUST STAGGERING.
Dang....it makes me happy to know how well Taron Egerton nailed the look of Elton John when he was super young.
And to think he thought he didn't have a good voice
Elton John's best song. People should listen to the lyrics. We need to listen to this today. It's an anthem.
Hard to believe he was 23... younger than me now here. Damn what a talent.
"Hes my brother let us live in peace" the beauty and power in that message
Listening to Elton's autobiography, and am only more impressed than ever with the skills Elton and Bernie have.
Elton F***ing John, thanks 4 your music
I remember staying up well past bedtime just to hear his voice on my radio.
The early albums had the genius of Paul Buckmaster’s wonderful orchestral arrangements and producer Gus Dudgeon. Classic albums that have stood the test of time.
I saw Elton John in concert last week, at one point he talked about how Aretha Franklin covering this song gave him and Bernie huge confidence boosts, being the struggling song writers they were at the time.
One of the best Elton songs
Aretha Franklin covered this, bringing her distinctive spiritual feel to the song. Her version went to #37 US in December 1970, four months after Elton's original charted. Aretha's cover was an early indication of how formidable the Elton John/Bernie Taupin songwriting team would be.
