This performance of ‘Your Song’ was Elton’s second appearance on Top Of The Pops, airing on January 14th 1971. This was just one week before the song became his first-ever entry on the UK Singles Chart. Taken from Elton’s eponymous second UK album, the now classic ballad peaked at #7 and spent 10 weeks inside the Top 40. This performance, recorded at the BBC Television Centre, features band members Nigel Olsson on drums and Dee Murray on bass.

Telling my age here, but when I was in college, I had a boyfriend that was a DJ for a radio station. My college was about 2 and a half hours from where he worked, but if I sat on my dorm room window ledge with my radio antenna pointed out, I could pick him up. Every night between 9-10 he would play a song that I knew was just for me. This was the one he played the most often.

I probably sang this just about every day in the army. To myself, to others, loading up, sweeping floors, running for miles, in the thick of it, off the flight line, everywhere. Kept a woman in mind I’d never even met, but the idea of her kept me going. Truth is she never was real, but the perfection of her image was nearly religion for me. Someday I’d meet her, I thought. And it would be all for her.

I met my father when I was 39 years old. It turned out to be one of the most special experiences of my life. We talked for months every Sunday before I met him in person. As I got to know him, I felt blessed. I played this song ALL the time because I felt how wonderful my life was with my dad in the world. I had him for 2 years, as he passed away from throat cancer in 2006. I never felt cheated but blessed that I had him in my life for any time at all.

I LOVE Capt Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy and was lucky enough to come across this RARE vinyl that was limited to 2,000 cause it was an album he sent to his promoters that was signed by Elton John and Bernie Taupin in the inside. Even the Lp is brown and it has an orange sticker on the front. The penmanship is awesome.

Maybe still going but with a completely different sounding voice in every single way. Its like two completely different singers from different eras ans vocal ranges singing the same song.
