When this song was at its height, my sister was 19 years old, dying from cancer. I was 17, and left school to spend a dreary winter with her in a Chicago hospital where they were doing experimental chemo. Late night, we'd order a pizza to be delivered to the ER in the basement, because nobody was allowed on the 8th floor cancer ward that late. We'd ride the elevator down and back, harmonizing this song together. She died too soon after that. I'm in my 70s now, but when I hear this song, I'm 17, in an elevator with great acoustics, holding a pizza, and singing my heart out with my best friend.
God bless you
Thank you, God Bless you, too. I feel very blessed to have had those special times with her. In dying, she taught me so much about living.
Your memories made me want to connect through this, I take it that your beloved sister has been gone for over 50 years now as you're in your 70's now. I lost my only brother two years ago, he was 57 and much older than your sister was, I'm still wondering how it will feel for me to be older than he was, is that something that you ticked off as the years went by, the things you expected to learn from your sister that could never be about getting older. I find that I'm still confused by it all and now I'm 57, the same age as my brother was. It's obvious that you still miss her and feel how you did with her at that time, I hope my feelings don't fade away and stay with me as yours have for your sister.
Thanks for your posting.
@@mikeatcora Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings about your loss. In answer, yes, it was very strange when I became "older" than my older sister. The hardest part was when I became a mother and later, a grandmother, and she wasn't there to be an aunt. She would have been a much loved aunt. But in those joyful minutes I've felt her there with me, and it felt good. My kids never got to have cousins, and I regret that, but now their kids DO have cousins, and I share that joy. I wish you those joyful moments of your brother's presence, and hope it eases the painful times.
god bless you

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence"
Dios le bendiga
I think it is one of the best songs ever written. Every word is simply perfect. This is poetry, not only music

I'm 65 now and I have listened the Great Geniuses of Simon & Garfunkel since I was 12 years old. Their albums were some of the ones I listened to every night on my record player. The way their music touches your soul is magnificent & beautiful that even a 12 year old could recognize the beauty in their soothing songs. ❤👩🦳
@doug phil thanks
I'm pretty young but i like the music from the 60-80's. do you have any tips of great music from that era. I really love this, if i could listen to a song a last time then it would be this one.
@@sherminator1617 oh my goodness, there's just too many to choose from. Three decades of music is a lot of music. I love all kinds of music so that even adds tons more choices. There's only two kinds of music I have never been able to like and that's Heavy Metal because all I hear are screeching guitars and screaming voices. And the old fashioned twangy country music. I like the more modern country music. I love the 1960's & 1970's music. Just Google each year 1961 and onward and ask to list the top 40 for that year. Pick a song and give it a listen. One suggestion, try not to judge a band by just one of their songs. If you think you might enjoy a band give them a chance and listen to at least a couple songs. I can say during this pandemic I still listen to one of my favorite bands at night with my headphones on because their music is calming to me and helps me sleep. That band is called BREAD and I've been listening to the album entitled The Best of Bread. Depending what mood you're in there are other great music & bands like America, Christopher Cross, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doobie Brothers, Earth Wind & Fire, The Grass Roots they were 1960's & 70's, so was Dr Hook & The Medicine Show but they're a required taste. If you like instrumental music especially Brass give Herb Albert & The Tiuana Brass band a try start with the song Rise. Jim Croce is also another great singer. Mama's & The Papa's, The Monkees, The Sweet but make sure you listen to the original The Sweet from the 1970's because after the band split up in early 1980's three of the members started their own Sweet band. The Sweet have several great songs and if you can find their songs also on a video then listen and watch them perform, it's great. Another great band from the 1970's to find on Video is named Pilot, I love that band too. Of course everyone loved the brother & sister duo back in the 70's called The Carpenters. Well, that's a start, should keep you busy for a few months. 👍

I'm fifteen years old and a few weeks ago, I started listening to Simon and Garfunkel. My mom said that it was some of her favorite music, so I gave it a shot. Now I'm OBSESSED. I've listened to all of their albums on loop and now I'm just finishing watching this concert. I'm simply blown away. Paul's songwriting, his guitar, his voice, Art's voice, the way the two blend seamlessly together; it makes me want to cry. It's literal perfection. Perfection isn't easy to come by in this world, but when you find it it, it means everything. I'm so so angry that current music is so crappy, what would I give to be born a few generations earlier... I just want to say that I love S&G with my whole heart; it's given me so much.
Music from the 60’s and 70’s will be played forever because people from future generations, like yourself, continue to recognize its timeless greatness.
Be happy that you discovered the joys of Simon & Garfunkel now.

So simple and perfect. This song never dies.
its crazy how the low/high dynamic of the harmony in this song switches from one being flat, and the other being expressive, back and forth so seamlessly is incredible

Applauds of excitement at the start and in appreciation at the end is all good, but be immersed in the music while it's playing ffs (at least don't ruin other people's immersion). People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence” It really speaks to me for some reason. So soft yet so powerful and moving. There’s no other song like it.
I believe it describes the space which allows all things to exist. Paul Simon is enlightened.

This song is a masterpiece, a touching and truly "prophetic" one.
How I love these two. Singing together, creating this pure harmony among them, and with those listening, through these meaningful deep songs.
They are a blessing. These are the kind of Americans we miss in t world, would be so necessary today
"And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made." - now I have that bouncing in my brain. Beautiful song.

Beautiful. I didn't appreciate their music as a teenager, but as a mature adult I think it is amazing.
This song is truly amazing. It brought back beautiful memories of my school days, back in the 70s. I am 64 and still feel like the song was composed yesterday. Amazing lyrics and amazing track!
