  • Celebrating the 50th anniversary of David Bowie's legendary Starman performance on Top of the Pops. The performance changed the course of music forever.
Recorded a day earlier at the BBC Television Centre in White City, the performance is undoubtedly one of the most essential pieces of music television ever broadcast. It has influenced generations of musicians, artists and writers who saw it at the time and countless others who have since seen it over the decades, from bootleg VHS copies to RUclips clips.
The performance launched Bowie to stardom. Thursday 6th July, 1972, is said to be 'the day that invented the 80’s’ as so many musicians who went on to be household names saw the performance and it changed their lives. Those watching that night included U2’s Bono, The Cure’s Robert Smith, Boy George, Adam Ant, Mick Jones of the Clash, Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, Morrissey and Johnny Marr of the Smiths, Siouxsie Sioux, Toyah Willcox, John Taylor and Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode and many more.

    About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

When ever I see Bowie’s earlier performances like this one, a smile naturally appears on my face, not only because I like his music so much, but due to the fact that he will go on to create so many more iconic albums and songs from here - along with the fact that David himself in the recording is not yet aware of his future feats. Long live David, and may you rest in peace.

I think I was 6 years old when I first saw, "Ashes to Ashes," on the Showtime, as filler. Several years before MTV started. I was alone in my living room and I was actually waiting for some kiddie film to start. But, when that video came on...Wow. I was so in awe. For a few moments, I thought I was watching something I shouldn't be. But, I felt the same way the first time I watched Monty Python a year or so earlier. My parents didn't seem to care then. So I watched this video...Then right after that video, Gary Numan's, "Cars," was next. I found myself that day. :)

@@self-proclaimedanimator In most other human fields I would have scoffed at the notion that everything was better in the past as one of those tropes that are repeated ad nauseam for - literally - millenia. But I agree that current pop and rock music has reached a creative low point. The reason is unfortunately the digitization of music both in creation and reproduction. Simply speaking, you cannot make any money from it anymore and so a lot creative talent simply evaporated. Back in the days, you had to buy a record if you wanted to listen to music. It was a lucrative business to be a creative artist. Today you swap files, download them, go to youtube, etc. The artists are screwed, you cannot make a living from it and the most talented people find different professions. There is hardly any live music that is not performed by established artists. Check out bill-boards for concerts and on offer is mostly a very geriatric bunch of musicians and bands. Making music computer or even AI assisted allows everyone with minimal talent to produce something that is at least decent. In the end it just generates sludge. There has to be a lot of talent out there, there always is, but the conditions to nurture and develop that talent have deteriorated. A real bummer. We are cheated out of great new music.

Bowie was a natural superstar. It is quite clear when you see this relatively early recording. What a confident and natural performance on stage not yet aware of his future. He blew up into a superstar after this performance, of course because he was truly amazing and special at that time. I'm a little too young to remember this performance, but I followed Bowie from around 1982 until his death. He made a difference in the music scene and I miss him.

Starman y Bowie siguen vigentes 50 años después. El número de veces que he escuchado esta canción, las primeras veces sin saber que me seguiría durante toda mi vida. Gracias!

I just can't get enough of this video! So, so, SO, cool. Bowie and his buddies in band just jammin' and living it up! Love the colors from the period and lights and his voice....WOW. An original voice that you can never mistaken him for any other vocalist. Rest in peace man! 🙂.

David Bowie will never die. He’s alive in his music.

    The 70s....ah the 70s.
This is not just music, this is a watchtower of images, times and spaces! Extraordinary.
I like the way the drummer was placed, at the front of the stage!

I love this song. In my opinion Bowie was an exceptional human being and more highly evolved than 99.9999% of the other people on earth.

I always thought this iconic performance deserved to be on his official RUclips Channel. I remember seeing it on a BBC Top Of The Pops to do with guitar heroes and I was glued to the screen and how good his singing and look was. I wasn't around in the 70's, 80's or 90's but it is indeed cool to like those decade I mentioned such great great music from amazing people. Bowie is one of my favourite icons and what a tune Starman is!

The 14 year old me was blessed to see this performance go out live on TOTP in 1972, just before heading out to the local youth club. Everybody was talking about it. It was played for weeks to come. The fact that this performance made my parents feel uncomfortable and the feeling that David had given all young people the nod to be a little weird and be comfortable with it was the icing on the cake.

@@kitesurf58phil hahaha!!! When our parents were weirded out, it was definitely a hit! The generation gap. I will say, my dad was pretty cool, he bought Saturday Night Fever and Abba albums in his mid 50’s, listening with headphones. My 19 year old self realized my WW2 battle hardened dad was hip! 🤓✌️

Bowie is easily one of the most broad musical artists I have ever seen. It’s incredible how much himself and his albums change as the years went by, a musical genius.

Man I'm watching this with tears rolling down my cheeks I grew up with this maestro, such happy happy wonderful times a true genius, oh if, if only I could go back to these times of innocence and escape this cesspit of a world we now all inhabit!😓

MEMORIES!!! I still remember so well, how we used to dance to this and his other songs - slightly stoned hahaha. I can´t believe, that it is over 50 years ago. Guess, our generation was pretty cool and I´m thankful that I was part of it.
