  • Hello and Welcome back to another Budget Builds Episode where today we'll be taking a look at the AMD Radeon HD5970, a card from 2009 which claimed the top spot as the worlds most powerful commercial GPU thanks to the power efficient way that it bolted two HD5870 chips onto it, which any themselves were only around 15% Slower than a GTX480... Pairing this with some great scaling on most of the games it really did deserve the title it earned...But now it's cheap...very cheap...But is it still any good?

      2008 and 2009 were meh... The 9800/GT was known to drop like flies! And thus probably only the GeForce 9500s and GeForce 9600s were reliable, if even that!

      My Radeon 4850 that I pop in and use occasionally still runs great! IT was released in july 2008 at 200$, but I managed to get it for just 130$ 2 months after release with a combination of sale and rebates and it came with Alone in the Dark 5 for free. The only reason I replaced the card in November 2012 was because its lack of dx11 support that was really starting to creep up on it, and its original fan died. I did replace the fan, but purchased a 1 gb radeon 6770 to replace it for the dx11 api. Then I ended up replacing the 6770 for a 7970 in september of 2013... This 7970 is probably the best aging card of all time!
      in this day and age if the radeon 4850 at least supported dx11, it would be the minimum card I would recommend in a quick budget build just to get into games. It can still run most dx 10.1 esports titles, and existing dx 10 titles in 720P at low to medium settings at a playable framerate. Nothing spectacular in today's standards, but for a quick fix it is the lowest I'd go.

    I actually used to have one of these! I wanted to note that you said two GBs of vram were usable, but I think you meant one. While the card does actually have two Gbs, each separate GPU on the card has it's own dedicated gb of vram, and since this is a crossfire setup (essentially), each one of those gbs of ram must store the same data. So this card effectively only has 1gb of vram. Which is a shame, because the two GPUs together are still pretty powerful to this day. But the low amount of vram (by today's standard) holds back the performance a little bit. Also, this card got HOT! Like, uncomfortable hot. But still, this was my first adult high end GPU purchase. Got it for about $300 about 5 years ago. Thanks for the memories, love your channel!

    • @BudgetBuildsOfficial
      @BudgetBuildsOfficial  6 лет назад +5

      +Matthew Rice: Oddly enough 2GB's was usable in games, well judging by the VRAM usage in GTA V ect.. so I might have been sent the 4GB Version accidentally.

    • @matthewrice4419

      According to Techpowerup's webpage for this card, the memory config for this card is listed as 1024 MB x2. I'm not aware of there ever being a version of this card that came with a 2gb x 2 config, but it's possible.

    • @Face2FaceHardware
      @Face2FaceHardware 6 лет назад +4

      I’ve noticed that Afterburner will combine the VRAM usage. So if each card is using 800 MB It will report 1.6 GB of VRAM usage. I noticed this when testing the 4870 X2. I didn’t see a way to separate it in the Afterburner settings.

      Matthew Rice the xfx 5970 black edition has 4gb, elric from tech of tomorrow, back when he was in motherboards.org covered it among other people on RUclips. The Asus Ares also has 4gb but that is more like a 5870x2.

    • @joe--cool

      That thing exists, but the clock rates are wrong. Budget Builds seem to have the 2 GB version.
      See here: www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/b228/xfx-hd-5970-black-edition-4-gb vs here: www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/b1818/xfx-hd-5970-black-edition
      If he has the 4GB version that would explain the good GTA5 performance. My 2x5870s are limited by VRAM hard in that game.

      Borderlands 2 is most certainly better optimized than borderlands 1 though. I see my 7970 in 1080P max jump between 130 down to 70 for no reason in BL1, in BL2 this is fixed and runs higher and looks better too. Part of the problem is the old, even at the time Unreal 3 Engine.

      I built my college pc in september 2008 and ended up with a radeon 4850 for only 130$ after a sweet sale/rebate deal on newegg. The 4850 was a great card and good investment for 4 years, but just one year later I could have gotten a 5770 or something and had direct x 11. Then again dx11 wasn't starting to become an exclusive api in a lot of titles until around 2012 anyway, so I guess I didn't hurt myself too much.

    Even today, 3200 shader units is A LOT. My fury after that was 4096 shader units, which was a ridiculous amount itself.
    For reference, the GTX 1080 has 2560 cuda cores... this just goes to show you how over engineered AMD has to be in order to compete with nvidia, due to the fundamentally more optimal exploitation of nvidia technology in windows. This is also why AMD is so good at bitmining. Their hardware has such a ridiculous amount of horsepower that games simply fail to exploit, but bitmining software can.

    • @ZombieBarioth
      @ZombieBarioth 6 лет назад +23

      Well actually, the issue is more that Nvidia optimizes their cards just for games, while AMD tends to re-purpose their tech, building their mainstream products off of workstation/server hardware.
      GCN is great at general compute tasks (like mining) but is not so great at heavily single-threaded workloads, like games running older DX API's. They do brute-force things a bit, but they also work around that limitation via drivers, which is where their "fine wine" technology comes from.
      GCN and Bulldozer function very similarly, to the point I wonder if its what inspired Bulldozer in the first place. They even have similar gains from DX12 and Vulkan.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 6 лет назад +20

      That's partially true. You should also consider that nvidia has had the most market share for so long, that the majority of testing and optimization was performed with nvidia in mind. Even if nvidia had done nothing on their own, they would inherently have better optimization by default. Added to this that nvidia also has far more budget for in house optimization, and you can see how stacked the deck truly is.

    • @batmangovno
      @batmangovno 6 лет назад +33

      Actually HD5870 bruteforced it's way while being cooler than Fermi but it's still got outsold. Nvidia lives by it's marketing and anti-consumer practices like GameWorks.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 6 лет назад +8

      Market dominance is the reason nvidia can get away with that. The more people that own the card, the more people to recommend the card, as choice-supportive bias is a fundamental fault of humans. The tendency to remember one's choices as better than they actually were, where people tend to over attribute positive features to options they chose and negative features to options not chosen.
      Both sides are guilty of this, but it plays a particular advantage to nvidia, as they have the market dominance so therefore they are the ones who benefit the most from these tendencies. However, since humans don't live forever, the marketing department does the work recruiting new people, and these people will go on to recommend their choice to confirm their own bias.

      One HD5870 is plenty for the recommended requirements (HD5850), its probably poor crossfire optimization causing a lot of the issues. These single-card dual GPU's may also have their own issues compared to running separate cards.
      Contrary to popular believe, it isn't Nvidia making games perform worse on games, they're simply very finicky about who gets to see their code, so it makes optimization difficult. Nvidia would have the same problems if AMD didn't make most of their tech open-source.

      Kliksphillip did quite a nice video explaining this, i might have exagerated a little bit but i'm still sure that a NVidia card with the same specs of an AMD card would run it much better not just because it's optimized for NVidia, but because it's made harder for AMD as well, you might not notice it on newer cards because they have a high enough performance to overthrow this.

    Answer to your 25 FPS locked in Fifa18, They animate the Scenes, instead of coding the movements into the game. By animating the scenes, you reduce the cost of the game and you save a heep of a lot time on also. And it's actually 24FPS, because that the minimum most smooth looking frame rate, by making it 24 instead of 30 or 60, you save a lot of money from the animating, because you only have to render 24 frames for each second not 30 or 60. The 25FPS you see is just being rounded up by your frame rate capture software.

    • @markashton9997
      @markashton9997 6 лет назад +1

      incorrect, 24 frames does not save money from animating, its commonly used as an easily divisible keyframe number for various methods of animation.

      U know, Even if they did "Animate" the scenes, the Biped Rag Doll Animation are always based on Keyframes! It simply means those Rag Dolls can Adapt to any Hardware capability. Given the situation, in the video, it only means the game Engine is too heavy for that GPU card.

    My 5870 served me well, I loved that card and it overclocked like a beast. Had it paired with my i7 875k overclocked to 4.25GHz at the time and it literally heated my bedroom during winter. I left my windows open during the cold months and had AC blasting in the summer. My friend who had a 5970 often complained about the micro stuttering from Crossfire mode with this card but I can't remember if they fixed that with driver updates down the road.
    Eventually sold the card when I got my 2 7970s but prices were still good and I was able to sell for a couple hundred bucks on Craigslist. My 7970s lasted me until 2016 when I decided to get a GTX 1080 for 4k gaming. Gave one of those 7970s to an ex girlfriend as a Christmas gift and the other is in my friends Quadfire 7970 PC.
    This brought back good memories, subbed to this channel and love the content. Keep up the good work!

    @ Budget Builds Official I'm putting together a retro computer using a Q9650 core 2 quad (I don't have a motherboard yet). I was going to use a Diamond 5870 but I bought an XFX Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition Graphics Card for $28.00 U.S. today so I will be using that. My goal is to build a computer that would be very high performance by the standards of 2008-2009 for less than &200.00. I now have a CPU and a GPU and have spent $38.00 but I fear getting a good motherboard cheap is going to be a problem. It pleased the hell out of me to find this good video on the very card I purchased, thank you.

    I have the XFX Black Edition Limited, which is a true 5870x2 card (i.e. no reduced clock speeds) with 2GB per GPU. It has two 8-pin connectors, which I believe all 4GB 5970 cards had. The XFX one was the only 4GB model which took up only two slots, which was a big reason for choosing it, despite its horrendous price (same as the 2080 Ti at launch, but back in 2010). It also supports up to six displays with six separate mini-DisplayPort outputs.
    It was able to run Crysis at 2560x1600 with 4xAA smoothly, where a pair of 4870x2 cards would be a slide show. Not because of processing power, but because of memory limitations.

    I remember when I had my 6990, its was great and overclocked like a beast. Sold it eventually and now with my r9 295x2 for the last few years. Still running strong and custom factory water cooler does its job well. So much potential in old tech for the money. You can get something a little weaker for many times less.
    Ironicly I got my r9 on release for 500$ canadian brand new, plus traded my 6990 with arctic cooler for that too.
    Great video, bring awareness to oldneglected tech, you can max out hudrets of games on that 5970.
