There's nothing wrong performance wise with the old system other than support. Really sad they think silicon goes bad after 5 years and want us end-users to shell out for a new GPU/CPU every 2-4 releases. Switched to Manjaro Linux after the fact and never looking back.

Droping the fury series makes no sence as there are almost no changes in the design document to Polaris.
I personally think they did it to not be confusing. Like with nvidia diffret cards have different levels of driver support mobile kelper was dropped long ago.
It was fair to drop gcn1 at this point. Although thst saddens me as i have alot of gcn 1 cards.

@@andrewmcewan9145 It's a bit of GCN1 maybe should've been dropped a while ago, but the problem is that they sold GCN1 as a new and current product not all that long ago.
If they wanted to drop them and didn't want people playing the "will this driver work with my card?" game (that is already solved via asking what card you have when downloading}, they should've at least done a final Win11 update.
And Fury _really_ needed longer support.

The 860m has a kelper and maxwell varient that is indistinguishable by name just as a example.
How ever i am not considered about community drives not being available for the fury till eol Polaris. As the design doc is essentialy the same and linux drivers are open source. But that does not excuse amd from handling the situation poorly.

ATI did this to the 9500 9600 9800 series in 2008 , perfectly good 3D GPUs for Linux gaming and G-Earth in 2007, they ruined them for Linux use with driver updates.. So using these for linux charity desktops for grandma and kids became pointless, everybody expected working 3D.
This benefitted Microsoft by keeping desktops Windows and pricey.

I don’t think AMD could have picked a worse time to drop driver support for GCN than they did, what with the gpu shortages and major releases like Halo Infinite just around the corner. Especially considering they’re still supporting these chips in consoles… I’ve got newer hardware myself but budget gamers who still depend on these cards have pretty much been purposely thrown under the bus by AMD on this one. At least the modded drivers do make an improvement in a lot of cases.

      @ying20000818 2 года назад +3

So when do you propose they drop support for 10 year old hardware?
Yes, GCN ranged from 2011 to 2015, which I am saddened they killed my Fiji (Fury) as its still more than powerful enough for 1080p 60fps in 2022 but at the same time, I understand that it was pretty much support all GCN or kill all GCN and they decided to go with the latter.
Yes, I will acknowledge 300 series were released in 2015, where 6 years is actually quite short but let's be real here, the only cards that weren't in the initial release of GCN 1.0 was Hawaii (and refresh, 290X and 390X) and Fiji (Fury). The 380 was pretty much just a 285, which was just an improved 7970, the 370 was just a 265, which was just an improved 7850 (and the list goes on).
For reference, Nvidia killed driver support for Kepler (600/700 series) just before AMD killed support for GCN so it's not like Nvidia is any better (albeit lonely Fiji did have a slight premature death).

I'm running a 7950 at the moment because my GTX 980 died recently. It's been a good card so far. Whilst overclocked, it can run Minecraft 1.18.1 with complimentary shaders at 1440p with 30fps most of the time. That is the sort of performance my dying 980 was giving. For £60 (from CeX) it is a brilliant budget option.
Also I've noticed that CeX have been doing something dodgy with dead cards returned under warranty... They are reselling them. When I bought my 7950, I actually ordered two because I knew that I was probably gonna receive a dead one... And I did. This is something very concerning that I've noticed over the past couple years (I noticed it with a laptop that I bought and returned because of a dead GPU and HDD) and no they don't bother trying to repair them.

Only one I found at the price range shown at the beginning of this video is labelled as "parts only" and some even have the audacity to go higher, even among the prices these GPUs are retailing for at the minute.
Someone even is as shameless as trying to charge you 600 US Dollars for it. Not only that, but also expects you to pay for delivery, too. Such an outcry.

you can probably get a bunch more performance out of linux. The early gcn versions are supported by both the new and old linux drivers called radeon (older) and amdgpu (newer). Radeon shouldn't have vulkan and a bunch of optimizations (like valve's) and is the default.
This will aspecially impact non native games which don't use opengl since it will use a translation layer to go from directx to opengl, that translation layer isn't very optimized and the newer directx to vulkan layer is way more so to the point of being used on the steamdeck by default. So it should give a fps boost, would probably give it either similar or better performance than the windows tests considering it's been actually getting optimizations for them.
Switching between the 2 is a bit of a pain, you got to change the boot arguments via grub. Just google "linux switch radeon amdgpu" and you'll figure that part out.
You'll also probably have to install vulkan manually.
I'm very interested to see if that would actually give a performance uplift or non at all

    Developer here.
About security concerns, there's nothing to worry about. The driver packages like DLL, EXE, SYS, etc are still organic.
Especially for GCN release, multiple whql parserinf are needed to maintain WHQL state. We still make the documentation how nimez behavior work, but the time consuming on hotfixing keeps delayed that documentation.
No reverse enginering, just using latest compatible dll from latest amd driver release. Since driver packages are mixed version like:
Dx12 and vk from WU 27.20.22x
    Dx universal from WU 27.20.21x
    Kernel from WU 27.20.15x
These 3 all need to be parsed by using pnputil and inside package are using dummy file with original inf and cat to get WHQL signature, that's why install this driver anywhay shown. It's SQL-like method. When amdxc64.dll found original signature installed on drivestore, it will detected as WHQL.

Meanwhile, I still want a radeon 7990 because that's basically the newest dual gpu card, that is fully supported in windows xp. Not with the final drivers AMD bothered to release for the OS in general, mind, but it actually *has* a supported driver, which is more than I can say for the gtx 690. I was able to get my 690 to work with some inf modding, true; but then I lose the SLI support _that was the point of having such a card._

Like so many other peoples sentiment in the comments. I was blown away by AMD’s decision to drop support of the GCN cards, and the timing of it couldn’t have been worse.
Currently running an overclocked i5 6600K with a R9 390 and modded drivers. I’m able to play all games at 1080P quite well, just needing to drop some settings as needed.
My predicament now is, when it is time to finally upgrade my computer when it no longer plays AAA games. Do I give my money to Nvidia or AMD after what has happened? I really don’t know which of the two evils I will choose. It’s not a decision I’m looking forward to.

I've had quite a few reasons to dread my upgrade path from my rx 580 as it is, i installed these custom gpu drivers finally after much delibaration, and of course they're WAY better than the official ones. The latest RX 580 driver REQUIRES a mobo update, anyone who's been into PC's long enough knows you're asking for trouble dabbling with motherboard updates especially often so i opted to sit on these crap official drivers, till now. Honestly? I think i might buy new open box condition, if bestbuy does that, for whatever high end RTX cards come out this year. I want a one and done deal for gpus so i never need to deal with amd's insanity and nvidia's anti consumer practices again.

I strongly suspect that the "radeon" driver was being used in the Linux test based off of your benchmarks. The "amdgpu" driver can be used however requires that they be manually enabled. These drivers do however provide better OpenGL performance on my 7850 as well as enabling Vulkan support, allowing the use of DXVK which itself performs a lot better than it's OpenGL counterpart WineD3D.
Overall though nice video and I'm glad that these series of cards are still getting love
EDIT: After some testing DXVK performance on these cards is a bit of a mixed bag. Furthermore, some newer distros seem to enable the amdgpu driver by default now. Enabling the amdgpu driver does also seem to yield consistently higher FPS on OpenGL though. If you are running games through Proton I found that enabling the amdgpu driver and adding "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%" to your launch options almost always yielded the best results.

I have found increasing the minimum FPS in Halo Infinite helps a lot. From around 30-35 fps without it, to 40-45 fps with a 60 fps minimum in multiplayer on a vega 7. That said, the graphic quality gets a big hit, though it isn't enough to hurt gameplay.

Do the Nimez drivers solve the AMD issue with OpenGL would be my question? I would love to use an older AMD card for an emulation system but need to stick with older nVideo cards because the OpenGL implementation in stock drivers are horrible in windows on AMD cards... And yes I know I could use Linux Mesa drivers but windows would be best... As an example I have a laptop with Radeon Built in Graphics and OpenGL usage in windows is horrible, but I get 4 times the performance in linux.

    Nvidia leaves better final drivers
    BUT
AMD leaves it open source so it can be supported by community
Nvidia doesnt, and it means the only way community is able to make good drives for it is by reverse engineering

AMD doesn't want you to hold on to a 10 year old card, they want you to buy new cards. So there is no incentive for them to optimize drivers for cards that old. If they did then people would just stuck to these cards longer and AMD would lose money.

IIRC GCN1 and GCN2 architecture cards don't have complete support in Linux unfortunately, there are some Vulkan extensions that don't work - and you need proper Vulkan support in Linux because that's what the translation layers are translating Direct3D calls to. In any case, it results in poorer performance. It's AMD's fault though (kernel side, not Mesa side), if I remember correctly they never bothered to implement everything, same as in Windows.
