2015 Infiniti Q50S and Q50 Hybrid Review and Road Test - DETAILED in 4K!

- The 2015 Infiniti Q50 is one of the most overlooked luxury cars on sale in the USA. Maligned for its steer-by-wire system the Q50 is one of the sharper handlers, one of the fastest entries, and if you get the hybrid system it’s one of the faster and one of the most efficient. On the down side we have a cramped trunk and the steer-by-wire system is bundled with a few must-have options.

As a owner of the Infiniti Q50S Hybrid, I totally appreciate Alex's review of the vehicle. There is something that leave me speechless in having a 0-60 time of 4.9 sec with 360hp and 412lbs and STILL being able to see real world fuel ranges between 490-520mpg on a single tank of gas. Its really an incredible machine. I do not ever intend to voluntarily purchase another gas only vehicle again.
Can you give me feedback on reliability? Any problems, especially with anything on the hybrid batteries?
Reliability?
demofya how’s reliability ?
Its VERY reliable. I am pissed Inifiniti opted to end production of the hybrid in 2018. 🤬
@@demofya I am planning to buy one , do you know anything which to keep in mind when checking the car out?
Someone mentioned premature rusting
Alex, you are the best car reviewer on RUclips. Thank you for making practical buyers review. Not track lap times, drifting, and making pointless comments like "I would rather have a manual".
James Min Mat Watson is cuter, plus Northern England accent.
+James Min Manual is important tho..
If this car had remote start and ventilated seats it would be P E R F E C T.
You can add that for like 400.. for the remote start.
I doubt very much the complicated Infiniti electronics would allow for a retrofit remote start.
Charlie_Willie jjk
You can have ventilated seats as an option in the uk it should be available in the USA too. I don’t know about the engine start.
Wow, i'm really impressed by the polish of the review. i like the side links, i love showing the length on a ruler next to other cars. i also like how the review compares the car to multiple cars and even different versions of the review. This is the first place i found that compared 0-60 for hybrid vs. non. Excellent review.
Alex, this is the best automotive review I have ever seen! I am your latest fan.
thank you, Alex. your review was excellent and very helpful.
Hey Alex...Another excellent review man..You are in a class of your own. The amount of information that you provide on your reviews is second to none...
This reviewer is by far the most professional out there.
You are amazing man, very nice and exciting review, thank you!
fell in love with this car the second i seen it. hoping to get one soon ! great video awesome review
Great review as always. im leaning towards the q50 myself with the infiniti sport muffler kit add on.
Hi Alex, you are absolutely right.
Q50 is an IS & 3 series fighter.
Since it is the longest entry in the segment, we get more space & makes an excellent buy.
Yes his reviews are great. Every detail you want to know good job
Thank you for comparing this with the Audi A4, that I own right now. Was the most useful review I watched lately. Thank you, and keep it up Alex!
Cool Review !
Awesome review
Superb review
Hi Alex I enjoy all your videos. Lots of great information. Thank you. I am trying to find a video you did where you talked about how the Q50 hybrid feels when you apply the brakes because the gas engine and and electric engine disengage and for a moment the car seems to actually go forward instead of slowing. I can't find it. Do you remember which video it is? I own a Q50S Hybrid. I love it...
Thank you
Ana
Nice angles and graphics
I see you have good taste in music. ;-) Awesome review as always.
Dude you're hella thorough awesome.
I really like your reviews, especially the part where you compare the price/values. Also, I love the fact that you keep improving your format by adding shortcuts, etc. Almost no other review channel keeps improving their work. They just do more reviews. Quality NOT quantity, people! I have two improvement suggestions though: 1. your exclusive trunk index is extremely silly, but maybe you have fun with it and it's kind of humorous side of your brand. 2. you are a little too verbose. I am sure you could convey the same information with 15-20% fewer words.
Excellent
Hey Alex,
Great review. Love how detailed you are with all of your reviews. Could you review the 2016 Nissan Maxima?
sdgreeni I hope to have one by the end of the summer.
Awesome.
I would like to see you crawl into the Hybrid trunk.
DAS is something you will love after 5000 miles.
Great Review.
Yet another nice review! I was particularly glad to hear your take on how the Q50 compares with the Acura TLX (another fine car, IMHO). The Q50 more closely compares with the other rear-wheel drive, entry-level luxury/sport sedans in the price category (3-Series, A4, CTS/ATS). The TLX is, in my opinion, more of an up level family car which more closely compares with the Nissan Maxima, Toyota Avalon, Lexus ES or perhaps certain Buicks.
When choosing the car, most people are looking at the price and making the mistake of assuming that the high the price, the better the car. I am glad that you addressed the notion of, "value" in your review.
I think if I were in the market for a Q50, I'd probably chose the Q50 Hybrid with the, "steer-by-wire" system for the same reasons you had mentioned at the end of your review. Then again, trunk space could be a big reason to not go with the hybrid.
Sidetone: I like the letter grading system over the scale of 1-10 grading system because as competition becomes more keen, there may be a need for a more precise scale of measurement. Perhaps a percentage would work well? "I give trunk space in the ________ a '92'..." Either way, it's your show, and I enjoy checking out your reviews!
Hi Alex, I realise it has been a while since you did this video, but wonder if the front seats are cooled by the AC system?
Thanks for another great review.
Was down to the q50 and volvo s60 t6 for me, and went with the s60 right before this review came out. Glad I did.
20 mpg? My god... I get 22 in my e92 bmw. Also, trunk space and the middle seat sucked on the q50.
Beautiful stranger nice song :), reminds me of good old days !
Good review Alex and a real nice car. You're right I forgot about the Q50, l had a G37x and it was a rocket.
+werbrown A rocket that felt like you were driving over rocks, couldn't wait to dump it!
Alex: as someone said below, you are the best reviewer on youtube. Question on the Infiniti...I had an '07 M37 and liked but for the "clunky' transimssion. Ok when start up but in traffic it got clunky, to the point where I had to jettison the car. Couldn't take it. Any note on the Q50 trans?
Also, currently drive a '13 Maxima with the smooooth cvt. Love it, don't get the hate out there. Have you reviewed the '16 Max? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Hi Alex, How would you compare this to the Hyundai Genesis , are they both in the same category . Thanks
You know its a good car review when he gets in the trunk
I like your videos, can you do a 2016 Range Rover evoque video please.
Nice Review! I just bought a 2015 Q50S and added Stillen Exhaust,Cold Air Intake, Osiris tuning, and it is a beast (posted videos on RUclips of sound and at a drag strip). With those relatively cheap additions, this car sounds and drives better than anything I've ever driven, and has surprised everyone at the drag strip. Personally, I love the drive by wire system, as it is so customizable and feels great to me. I've owned BMW's and Mercedes, and have driven many Audi's and this is by far my favorite of them all.
What do you think of the standard electric assisted rack pinion steering system? Would you say the differences in feel are dramatically different between the two?
+Mohammad Mehio +Mohammad Mehio I've always been surprised with all of the negative reviews on the steering. There is a huge difference between each mode which really allows you to customize it to what you like best. Personally, I love it. It is drastically different from rack pinion system. It is a lot more fluid and responsive. Best of all, if your car is out of alignment or tire a bit out of balance, you won't feel that annoying shaking in your steering wheel. Personally, I'm sold, and will make sure my next car has that same feature.
If you still have this vehicle, I would strongly suggest you ditch stillen exhaust for motordyne. Night and day difference. I have motordyne on my maxima and my brother has it on his q50s. Nice deep growl that's not ridiculously loud or ricey.
any problems with it?
i hear it has loads of issues with the tech..
Ken Kara what fuel economy do you get? It's hybrid right?
i had the privilege to drive one of these for over 150 miles and i loved it, it was shockingly nice in the interior both in materials and quality i was expecting a rebadged nissan but not the case.
now with that said its not there with the "top class" luxury cars (bmw, audi, mercedes) its also definitely not there with Lexus or Cadillac "runner up class?", but compared to Buick, Lincoln, Acura it is definitely number one for my pick above those.
and good review once again :)
Would you mind telling me how you got your 0 to 60 specs? Was it from our website or was it something you actually tested and if so what did you test it on?
Hey Alex, I love the detailed reviews you do on vehicles, particularly the interiors. The Infinity q50 seems like an all around perfect car in most aspects, but I was wondering for interior quality in this segment, which car has the best materials and quality overall?
Thanks
ty j Consistency of quality is best in the Mercedes Audi and Volvo, but the Infiniti does very well up front, I'd put it above the Lexus and Acura.
Alex on Autos Thanks for the quick response, I really like this car and the Volvo s60, it's always a toss up for me.
Alex how did you hit 60 miles an hour in 5 seconds did you hold down the brake to get your revs up?
I wish you would've touched more on the safety/self-driving tech Infiniti has to offer.
Touch yourself
As a 2003 G sedan owner, I'm super jealous of the new car's interiors. I don't mind being down 30+ hp so much though, as the newer Gs are almost 300lbs heavier than mine and the Q is 400+ lbs. I might even beat one, though other advances like 7 speed trans mean I still probably can't.
Why is the MPG different in 2:55 than 3:04? For Hybrid it says 22 but the next slide it says 28
Looking forward to the new Maxima; can't wait till you get your hands on it; should be cheaper than the Q50
If you compare the Q50 Hybrid to the Lexus GS450h Hybrid, the Q50 is a incredible value.
They are both about the same weight and wheelbase, and both get the same 31 MPG combined, but the Infiniti is about 1 second faster to 60, offers AWD, and costs $17k less.
You can't get the hybrid IS in the states so it's the nearest comparison
Which models do not have the DAS as mentioned in the video? I've been reading about the DAS issues causing crashes, especially in cold winter climates.
Nice review. Are you doing letter grades instead of the /10 system for reviews now?
0x1A4 I decided to give it a try and see how it works.
I like my q50s hybrid. Fun car. Idk what to get next. May hold on to it for a while
3series
@@Leah006 I'm thinking the BMW I4 actually. I called the dealership and asked them to call me first
Great car! It's just missing ventilated front seats. And being here in Texas, that's a deal breaker for me!
I never actually considered Infiniti beforehand, but this review may change my mind. While I probably prefer the driving-oriented sedans like the IS350 & ATS, I do enjoy the added benefit of a hybrid system which I first experienced in the CT200h at Lexus (too bad that car lacks power).
I may take a time to check this out. But I still stand by my earlier comment about the gruff sounding 3.7 V6.
First off love your reviews! I am looking at getting a used 2014 or 2015 Q50 hybrid and have read reviews about the brakes being very unpredictable, not having a linear braking feel. Do you have any experience with the hybrid and how it brakes? Other posters please respond too.
Sometimes wen you brake, it takes like a second or 2, for the electrical motor to downshift, as result you will feel a extra push, wen braking under 40 miles, as a user, i found that to be unsafe, because it only takes a second to get into an accident, and dont even get me started on the wheel by wire tech if you get on a front, fender bender, the car will be total, your insurance will go tru the roof whit this car.
If you opt for the technology package, the car has a lane keeping feature that you can turn off and on at will and at highway speeds the cameras read the lines in the road and will turn the car accordingly to keep you in your lane and will go as far as maneuvering around slight bends without human interference. I say this because Alex mentioned that the car has no autonomous capabilities at the end of the review and he would be wrong.
Thumbs up on the spares
When are they going to slip in the VR engines
The Q50S has a very powerful engine for its class (though I suspect the C400 & 335i are more powerful due to German underrating their motors), but it feels gigantic sitting beside a 335i and S4. I also don't like the sound of the 3.7 V6: it sounds gruff at idle vs. the smooth IS350 and S4.
Great review, Alex. A quick question: Does the Q50S have run flat tires and a temporary spare tire? I would have thought it would be one or the other, not both.
I wonder if with run-flats and no-spare tire would the usable trunk space be increased by lowering the load floor.
Personally, I would prefer regular tires and a spare tire, at the expense of trunk space due to cheaper replacement tires.
Yes, the run flats are optional but the do not remove the spare
Alex on Autos FYI The run flats are STANDARD on All Q50's (17" or 19" Wheels). And the Spare Tire option is a add-on Package. You will find many Q50's on dealer inventories without it.
How is the reliability of hybrid model?
That trunk comfort part 😂😂😂
Nice review. C in cabin noise?
As an owner I would have to agree. Compared to other luxury name plates, there is too much road noise. That hybrid though...
Alex. Based on your time with the s60 and q50, which would you feel the better buy is?
I'm torn between them =(
David Carriere I would say the Q50 is the better buy, but I would personally lean toward the S60 because I think it suits me better,.
Does Infiniti use zero gravity seats?
Great review. The first MPG numbers which appear in your video are not corrrect - the hybrid shows up as getting worse fuel economy than than the gasoline-only version.
Nicholas Riley Had to rewind to check that too.
Nicholas Riley I noticed that after. Darn it. RUclips penalizes you for re-uploading so I just covered that up with an annotation... Hopefully nobody will notice...
Do you think the extra weight of the Hybrid system would detract from handling performance or does the location of the battery in the rear help to maintain even weight distribution?
James Cornett It is surprisingly light for a hybrid and the battery in the back certainly helps.
What is that sound at 12:46?
he shit himself
he ran over a parrot
Whats that creepy sound at 12:47???
It should be automatically understood that RWD vehicles have COMPLETELY different Purposes, Steering Feel, and Performance. So there is no true comparison. Even with Acura's Super Handling AWD, it is STILL a FWD vehicle and it will always be a FWD vehicle so it have completely different personality. No Comparison there. Now the way this stacks up with the Beamer. Honestly I like the aggressive looks and in your face I'm wealthy looks of the Beamer. It's Faster with more of a Trigger Happy Transmission. I Love That. But I also love the small things about the Q50S. The Dual Screen Layout, BRILLIANT!!! Dual Climate Control buttons on either side, BRILLIANT. The gauge cluster. I Love it. The Infinity is Definitely more Upscale for sure than the Beamer. So this would be a TOUGH choice to make if I was cross shopping.
Im thinking about getting a Q50 hybrid and maybe throwing on cold air intake, debating a Q50 hybrid and doing cold air intake or either a C43 amg and doing the same thing.
Same paddle shifters from the gtr.
well spotted.
I love me some Nissan/Infiniti paddle shifters.
Alex, great detailed review as always! I agree this does seem to get overlooked a lot in this segment which is odd considering how popular the previous Gs were.
Can you comment a bit on the ride of the sport vs. non-sport models? I bought a G37 a few years back and while I was shopping for it, I decided not to go with the sport suspension at the time as many reviews noted the ride was overly harsh. I'm not sure if the same is still holds for the Q50 or if the change to run-flats may be affecting both models.
In terms of value, what do you think about the Q40? It's a really old model now but does that $4k discount against the Q50 make it an even better value proposition given it has essentially the same powertrain? Or does the lack of tech options make it unappealing?
PS, As someone who went from Infiniti to Audi, I chuckled a bit at the Q50 Hybrid vs. Audi S4 comparison about the Infiniti being "more powerful" rather than "faster" as per your BMW comparison.
flymetothem00n The Q40 is just getting a bit old for me. Perhaps if they refreshed the interior and jammed a smaller engine under the hood it may make more sense, but even as a business decision I just don't get it.
I was going to get this car but then he reviewed the trunk. I work a strip club and from time to time we to haul dead bodies out of the VIP rooms. What a shame hope infiniti fixes the trunk space in the next gen. Great vid tho
😶
Chain saws are cheap in HD, rookie.
he should do ghetto car reviews. When he got in the trunk haha. So this car can only hold one body in the truck lol
This wasn't a home run review, it is a grand slam!
You said 8speed auto at 13:31...it's 7speed thou...
Kevin Bright My bad, I had 8-speed on the brain.
how does this compare to the c class
+Omar Geraldo
The 2015/16 C-class kind of blows it away in terms of build quality, refinement, powertrain (sort-of) and ride quality (this is coming from someone who driven both the Q50S Hybrid AWD & C400 4matic).
However the Infiniti does have benefits: the Q50 Hybrid can get compact-car MPGs while having enough power to embarrass a BMW 335i. Infiniti also packages its options in one bundle, with goodies like lane-keeping assist, radar cruise control etc. as standard equipment (MB will charge you a lot more for these). All in the Q50S Hybrid AWD will cost ~$53k CDN before taxes vs. a C400 4matic which STARTS at ~$53k base, and can easily pierce the $70k mark with a heavy hand on optional extras. Lastly, IMO the Q50S looks sharper than the C400 4matic even in its sport trim.
k thx that helps alot
I value steering feel too much to get this vehicle with steer-by-wire. I would get it if the other features are available. Even the Q50 without steer-by-wire have mediocre steering feel. I actually prefer the driving dynamics of the G37.
IS350 Fsport. or the Caddy
Yes... And?
Hey there, Beautiful Stranger
As an owner of a 2014 IS350 F Sport, the Lexus is a much better value. Fully loaded, it maxes at 49-50k with AWD. The Q50S AWD is easily 55-57k loaded. A lot of features that are standard on the Lexus (like a fold down rear seat) are wrapped up in expensive packages on the Infiniti.
bsowhat The IS 350 F-Sport is less expensive but I would not call it necessarily a better value. Equipped as comparably as possible the IS 350 F-Sport is $50,770 and the Q50S is $54,055. However the Infiniti gets a 7-speed auto, more power, more torque, full speed range radar cruise (full stop), all around camera, backup collision intervention, blind spot intervention, lane keeping assistance, moving object detection, predictive collision warning, torque vectoring, rain sense wipers, limited slip rear differential, adjustable thigh cushions, and brighter LED headlamps. According to True Delta the value of those additional features is $5,000 which actually makes the Lexus more expensive when you adjust for the feature content. The IS is also smaller with less legroom especially in the rear. In AWD form the Q50S will handle better largely due to the tire choices but the IS is the superior feeling vehicle in general. The IS is much more direct, much more connected to the driver. But when it comes to value, the Infiniti is the best value RWD option in this segment.
Alex on Autos I agree. I drove both and picked the Q50. The reason for me was comfort and space. I am 6'3 and I felt so cramped in the IS350. I mean it is a nice car, but I just preferred the Q50. Pus I liked the look of the Q50 better, but that is also subjective.
***** I like the 300, but neither Chrysler or Infiniti say it is a cross shop for the Q50 so I left it out. Chrysler is fairly adamant that the 300 doesn't compete higher up in the luxury categories, something I've never totally understood, but the cross shop metrics indicate its not a big car on the Infiniti shopper's radar.
i wish they had modernized the 2018 model with a modern NAV and a HUD and more than that a adaptive suspension like in the Q30 or Q60 !!! sadly they still offer the outdated shit nowadays.
I smell the brand goes down in the next 10 years .
He really went in the trunk lol for all you kidnappers 🥴
The thumb's down selections on this review baffle me. There are not many reviewers that cover as much, so well as Alex does. If you don't like the car, fine, but rate the review with thumb's up and down, not the product!
Wow, 9 cubic feet? That's terrible. I don't prioritize trunk space by any means (my last car was a Camry Hybrid and my current car is an Audi A3), but even I found those cars' trunks small. 9 cubic feet would be nearly unusable for anything more than groceries and a work bag.
+Antenox I felt the same way, but its really not as bad as it seems. I was able to pack luggage for my wife and I to visit family out of town for a week. (All in the trunk).
Zero to sixty in 5 seconds? I thought he was gonna say 5.5.
Those are horrible numbers for a hybrid. Also those trunk hinges that are hidden decrease your cargo hold in there
Trunk comfort rating? Is that a joke?
"Studio On Wheels" bahaaaaa, just more noise to distract the driver.
Is nobody scared that the electric motor lasts for 6-10 years? And by the end of this year this car is 6 years old. .im afraid that i buy this car, then the battery or electric motor malfunctions, which is a pricey $13,287 alround
is it a CVT?????
No
They dont sell the is300h there because the interior is absolute trash. As lovely as it looks on the outside its terrible
Here in L.A., only angry, aggressive drivers are buying these. It's the look of the car that sells them. This thing is more in your face than anything right now by the way it's styled. When I see one on the road, I get the hell away.
Nerd
Electric joke.
While a lot of auto journalists are thrashing this car, I decided to test drive one today based on your review while I was cross-shopping some other vehicles and I must say I was very disappointed. Seems like your no nonsense, all numbers approach is actually quite useless in the real world. Sure, if real life was a spreadsheet, this car would be one of the best in its class. However, it turned out to be one of the most confused and annoying vehicles I've ever driven. The steering is a complete failure, there's no other way to describe it. While it performs OK, it gives the driver zero confidence and driving with confidence is the absolute most important factor for a sports car. The handling during spirited driving is OK, but somewhat nervous and this thing tramlines like crazy on uneven roads. The engine and transmission are adequate, but overall they do nothing to make the car less dull to drive. It gives the driver as little feeling as possible. The dash unit is pretty awful as well. It accomplishes less with 2 screens than most cars do with 1. While each part of the car is acceptable, the overall package is a complete mess and I'd never want to own one.
