Assassin's Creed Shadows: Who Are Naoe and Yasuke?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 май 2024
- Assassin’s Creed Shadows takes place in 16th century Japan during the Azuchi-Momoyama era. Players will play as two distinct characters, a Japanese shinobi, Naoe, and - in a series first - a real-life historical samurai, Yasuke.
Game Director Charles Benoit and Associate Narrative Director Brooke Davies dive deep into who these characters are, how they differ from a gameplay and narrative perspective, and why they were the perfect fit for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
About Assassin’s Creed Shadows:
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you will live the intertwined stories of Naoe, an adept shinobi Assassin from Iga Province, and Yasuke, the powerful African samurai of historical legend. Against the backdrop of the turbulent late Sengoku period, this remarkable duo will discover their common destiny as they usher in a new era for Japan.
From chaos to purpose, from darkness to light. A new Creed rises over Japan.

As a Japanese, I can confirm that Yasuke is not even mentioned in the Daimyoki(大名記) which record the names of all samurai and retainers under control, including those who made no notable contributions. Yet, they still declared him a samurai.
Our culture is rich, with many stories and notable figures known only to the Japanese. This game could have been a bridge to share that richness, but instead, they chose to focus on a figure like Yasuke, who is barely known and not mentioned in our historical texts, seemingly to serve their own agendas.
We are already aware that other cultures have started casting black individuals in roles that are traditionally preserved by other countries, seemingly just for propaganda purposes, such as the mermaid and Cleopatra. Now, it seems our culture is not being spared; they are merely using Yasuke to push a specific narrative, which is simply common sense.
There isn't much common sense left here in the West to be perfectly honest. A lot of people cannot see what you and many others can see.
I think the point of assassins creed games are to mention the unknown stories of history. That’s how I always viewed it and use to pass my classes because of the things that were related in the game from the pieces of history we didn’t pay attention to in our studies were in it. There is no samurai without a family name in Japanese history.
If Nobunaga had taken Yasuke as a samurai, he would have given him a family name along with his Japanese name.
In Japanese history, the status of a samurai who does not have a family name and serves the samurai is called a "buke-houkounin. The rank of a buke-houkounin (samurai servant)is between that of a samurai and that of a farmer. Therefore, they are also called "chugen(in-betweent).

Cherry blossoms blooming in spring and silver grass growing in autumn exist simultaneously in the village landscape. That alone shows that UBI has not studied Japan at all.
Did you play ghosts of Tsushima lol. It was all 4 seasons at once on that island.
The basis for some people's assertion that Yasuke was a "splendid samurai was even asked to assist Nobunaga in Harakiri at the Honnoji Incident" is probably based on Thomas Lockley's book "Nobunaga and Yasuke: Black Samurai Who Survived Honnoji," but it is simply his own over-interpretation based on the little data he has available, and has no historical basis.
Furthermore, the story that Yasuke fought in the Honnoji Incident is also based on the "History of Japan" written by Luis Frois, a Jesuit missionary, but we know that Luis Frois was traveling to Kyushu with his patrolman Alessandro VALIGNANO at the time of the Honnoji Incident, and did not encounter the Honnoji Incident.
In other words, the idea that he was a super samurai is only a delusion of those who wish it were so.
If he really was a good samurai, his subsequent military exploits would have been well known, but the fact that his whereabouts are unknown after the Honnoji Incident is also evidence of this.
We know everything. He was a personal servant, a samurai, when the rest of the samurai were dozens of servants not close to the master. He served as a squire to one person, after his death he joined a relative in the service. As a result, he was captured, but was not executed because the enemy did not consider him worthy as a human being. So he ended his career and returned to the missionaries in Japan.
Most samurai who served actual lords, their military exploits are not well known. The Samurai’s that have the most exploits written about them are the lords ang generals and leaders like Nobunaga himself. Just because Yasuke’s exploits are not as well known doesn’t mean he wasn’t himself a good Samurai’s. Especially if Nobunaga allowed Yasuke to serve him as a Samurai.
@@Highonlife24
Is that right? At least in Japan, blacks were very rare, so if they were supported by some clan leader or had some military merit, it would surely have remained in the lore.
@@user-bj2yr7tb1p No, because Yasuke service to Nobunaga was short and Yasuke was then banished after Nobunaga’s forced seppuku, because the rivals and warlords against Nobunaga were against if not absolutely disgusted of a foreigner being allowed to be a Samurai. So it’s not surprising that there is little writing on Yasuke. 1. As previously stated he was a standard warrior samurai in terms of rank with the only difference is that he was allowed to serve directly alongside Nobunaga
2. Two people against the concept of foreigner like Yasuke being part of the Samurai tradition wanted him not only out of Japan but erased from the record/history books outright.
So it really isn’t surprising that the exploits or the full story of Yasuke is scarce.

Nice to meet you all.
I am a Japanese game lover and I am writing this comment to share my words.
(I am using a translator, so there may be many things wrong)
What I want to tell you is that Yasuke is not a samurai to begin with.
The fact that there is very little information about him at that time, and the fact that he was given a fiefdom, makes me think that he was a samurai.
I can understand why you might think that he was a samurai. However, information also indicates that he was a "shibun" (a warrior who carried weapons to battlefields), which suggests that he may have had a slightly different status from that of a samurai. The current prevailing view is that he may have had a slightly different status from that of a samurai.
Since there is little information on Yasuke, his status and other details are still not known, and he has been missing since the Honnoji Incident.
What I am trying to say is that I do not want this to be spread as a historical fact.
Of course, the story is a fiction and I am a creative person and I like to enjoy fiction.
It is the historical buildings that I have a problem with.
I am witnessing in my trailer that tatami mats are represented as squares.
Tatami is generally rectangular and has a line running through it called [tatami edge].
Tatami mat edges were decorated with elegance in the homes of high-ranking samurai and others, and were considered one of the things that indicated a person's nobility.
Stepping on the edge of a tatami mat is a violation of etiquette, so much so that it is said, "Think of it as stepping on your parent's head.
In the trailer, the tatami mats had not been pulled down, and the samurai were sitting where the tatami mats would have been.
The doors, called shoji, are also far larger than the typical size and shape.
I am not going to say anything about the Assassin's Creed characters.
In the Assassin's Creed series, which has long been creating historical buildings in great detail, is this kind of construction allowed?
Are we in Japan a country where political correctness is not considered important?
I don't care how you treat us Japanese. But it is a shame that our respected history is treated in this way.
PS: I made a similar comment elsewhere.
I wanted many people to know my words.
I can't help but think that Yasuke has the charm of a protagonist in an otherworldly reincarnation anime, but it's lame that his historical discussion is so ragged.
I’m fine with Yasuke, but I understand why him being painted as a big historical figure may be seen as weird, and with the details you’re pointed out I’m even more worried about this game
Thank you for your perspective! I’m not really sure why they did not put in more effort to be culturally accurate to their chosen setting…it could be that perhaps they did but chose to go off script for other reasons like creativity, practicality, or even sensitivity. But I agree that getting the structural details correct is very important for the atmosphere and experience of a game. Historical and cultural accuracy in setting-even if they take creative liberties in storytelling-is very important for me to enjoy the game.

What was William Adams' samurai name?
@@jonathansivahera3886
William Adams, an Englishman, was born on September 4, 1564, and passed away on May 26, 1620. During the early Edo period, he served as a diplomatic advisor to Tokugawa Ieyasu, who became the shogun (the model for Toranaga in the SHOGUN drama), making him the first European to receive the title of samurai.
He was given the Japanese name "Miura Anjin(三浦・按針)" with "Miura" derived from the Miura District, which became his fief.
He was employed as a hatamoto, a direct retainer of the shogun, with a stipend of 250 koku of rice. One koku is estimated to be roughly 250,000 to 270,000 yen at current rates, resulting in an annual income of over 62.5 million yen. When converted to dollars, it amounts to approximately 390,000 dollars.
Furthermore, he was granted territory in Hemi, Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, where he settled with his local wife. This land was inherited by his son Joseph, born of his marriage, and the name Miura Anjin was passed down to him.
In addition to these details, there are numerous anecdotes about his significant contributions under Ieyasu's patronage and his later unfortunate circumstances in his old age after Ieyasu's passing. Even today, the Miura Anjin Festival is held in Izu to commemorate him.

Ubisoft are likely using Thomas Lockley as their source of info. The dude wrote a fictional embellishment of Yasuke for profit and is passing off his fictional book as historically accurate. There is zero actual evidence Yasuke ever fought in a single battle or was anything more than a curiosity for Nobunaga. He spent a whopping three years in Japan and less than one year serving Nobunaga, but somehow he was a legendary warrior, get real. They should of had both protagonists be Japanese in a game set where over 99% of the population is Japanese.
No point if doing creed game set in popular seting if you can't provide fresh perspective on him. And Yasuke provides that. And who cares if he fought in a war, Borgia wasn't dueling assassin and Leonardo Da Vinci didn't create weapons for assasins either. If you were looking for historical accuracy you've picked the wrong franchise. The series always creates realistic historical envioremts and then turns them into a sandbox for ahistorical insanity characters do on regular basis.

Yasuke fought at battle of Temmokuzan (fall of Takeda, might have spelled that wrong), there are accounts of Nobunaga's Son, Nobutada, giving him money afterward. And Ieyasu Bodyguards saying Nobunaga had Samurai with skin the color of charcoal
Japanese media says UBI couldn't understand Japanese people the reason why they chose Yasuke.
On the other hand, Sucker Punch earnestly engaged with Japanese people and created Jin Sakai.
Honestly I’m probably just gonna play Ghost of Tsushima, it’s already out, cheaper, more respectful to Japanese culture (I’m not talking about Yasuke, details like the tatami mats and doors are wrong), and they mixed a ninja and samurai into one character

I am from China, and I understand the difference between "cultural dissemination" and "cultural appropriation". In the past, the protagonists of the Assassin's Creed series were all virtual characters, and they were all locals in the place where the story took place, not foreigners. The advantage of this is to avoid Disputes, respecting local history while also being able to expand the story through virtual characters will make local players feel the affinity of the game. For example, the "Dynasty Warriors" series produced by Koei, they adapted it on the basis of respecting the original work, which will make the original People who don't understand the Three Kingdoms are fascinated by the history of the Three Kingdoms. They do not use an unknown foreigner to act as a figure like Zhao Yun or Cao Cao who can control key nodes in history. In the same way, it is still Japan's local daimyo and famous generals who promote the process of Japan's Warring States history.
Therefore, using historical characters as protagonists will lead to many problems if not properly controlled, such as cultural appropriation and ethnic humiliation, let alone a foreigner like Yasuke who lacks historical records. When the protagonist of Resident Evil 5 kills mutated Africans, Some people are offended, but they think it's okay for Yasuke, an African, to kill normal Japanese people... it's an insult.

Fun fact: Yasuke was never a full blown Samurai. He was never given any banners, or decorated armor. He was in fact a Koshō, which was a weapon bearer for the Daimyō… essentially the Japanese equivalent of a European Squire. He acted as a bodyguard who also held the weapons for the Samurai when they weren’t in use.
He owned only a short sword, and had his own living quarters. He was respected, but he was never an actual Samurai like Ubisoft wants you to believe. He was never “able to come to Japan” it wasn’t his choice. He was a servant (or slave) for the Italian Jesuit Missionary: Alessandro Valignano. They’re perpetuating the modern internet theory that he was a highly regarded Samurai Warrior who almost blended into traditional Japanese culture, and heritage. Or even worse, they’re perpetuating the other modern internet theory that states that Oriental people’s of Japan (as we know them today) were in fact “colonizers” who stole ancient Japan from Africans. But HEY please buy our game anyway right?
They used to stretch history before to accommodate the fictional Assassin’s Creed storyline… but this is a new kind of stretch. It’s rewriting history to make it more digestible for *modern audiences* … typical. Way to go well out of your way to pinpoint the one known African resident of Japan’s history, when you had ages and ages of actual Japanese heritage to shine a light onto..
This is basically the equivalent of Ubisoft finally releasing an Assassin’s Creed game set in Africa, but instead of naturally having an African male lead, they decided to pinpoint the first Portuguese settler of South Africa: Bartolomeu Dias, to help lead the story… set in historic Africa. Ya see the problem? You should.
Ubisoft has been doing this a while now. It's just clear as day with this. But as soon as I saw Caribbean and lesbian vikings all over the place in "Valhalla", I knew they no longer respected history.

Anyone who understands basic Japanese history knows that so called "Yasuke" was a servant, not a Samurai. You see, merely possessing a katana doesn't elevate you to the esteemed rank of Samurai. For that, you'd need to be born into a Samurai family, as Samurai status is this little, almost trivial thing called an inherited nobility, not some open-to-all membership club. But, of course, leave it to the same geniuses who proudly proclaim Cleopatra was subsaharan African to educate us on Japanese history. In the Japanese version of the video, the developer interviews have been cut. They probably wanted to avoid revealing that they hadn't done any research on Japan. I would recommend that they first familiarize themselves with 'Ghost of Tsushima' and 'SHOGUN'. haha
Shinobi didn't exist back during ghost and no actual samurai would ever have done what Jin did
Too much honor which is why the Mongols wrecked them until the tsunamis
Ghost is completely inaccurate and to avoid issues majority of the clan names and characters are all fictional
@@radecstark3191 dude samurai had a code but it's not like every single one of them were very idealistic. samurai and the lords changed sides often, betrayed their masters, committed genocides etc. That 'honorable samurai' idea came out much long after samurai stopped fighting in wars.
@@hwacha4911 meant honor as sarcasm.
But also Shinobi ninjas weren't a thing during that period
日本のことをまるでわかってない。理解しようとしていない。
Ubisoft should hire people who really study history... make a game in such a great historical period in a country full of culture... then they put as protagonists a foreign man who was never a samurai and a ninja woman who fights.. things that aren't either existed...kunoichis are just spy. They should have read a good Japanese history book and not only watched anime before creating this game.
This cultural appropriation at its most sinister while being dressed up to be inclusive and at the same time, insulting an entire country.
I agree that making Yasuke a samurai was stupid, but people yelling cultural appropriation are ignorant of what the Japanese do on the daily.
@@ZackZipper what's that?
Saying Yasuke was a samurai, is like saying Abraham Lincoln was a vampire hunter.
XD yea I watched that movie. Laughed so hard
Well he fought many battles for oba plus there are many documents where they say he is a retainer who fights!!! Your just mad no pale people were samurai before yasuke 😂

You mean he wasn't a vampire hunter?😅
It’s a fictional game series taking inspiration from historical legends and tales… grow up guys

Imagine the s***storm if a game set in Sub-saharan Africa had a non-black protagonist LOL.
P.s. to the people with very short memories in the replies, FC2 had many options for the player character. And Resident Evil 5 was widely vilified with accusations of racism.
Time for a Black Panther to be played by a Ryan Gosling.
@@Michchall where to pre-order?
underrated comment 🤣🤣🤣😂
If it actually makes sense for the story and the setting why not? Though it's hard to imagine a worse shitstorm that's already going on concerning Yasuke. Do you not see the comments? Lol
there already was, Far Cry 2. Everyone was fine with it
"WE cannot really mix Shinobi and Samurai together" Don't make Jin Sakai laugh!
What they mean is they aren’t smart enough to do so

@@blooperman1997 Ubisoft could never please all these haters lol they love to ride the hate train for any reason they can find
They definitely can. But then they wouldn't have this strong female shinobi MC! Even though female ninjas were only really intelligence gathering.. but hey who cares about that
I understood well that the French are discriminating and quitting against the Japanese.
All Japanese are quite angry. Not at the black lead, but at the portrayal of Japan, which is riddled with lies.
The Japanese are most unhappy about being licked and having their honor tarnished.
