Rethinking the AMC Pacer | Chip Foose Draws a Car - Ep.6

- Often ridiculed following its debut in the turbulent 1970s, the AMC Pacer’s radical interpretation of a compact car has since accomplished an impressive feat-it’s become a legitimate cult classic. One part of its shocking design included a large amount of glass to make the car both look and feel bigger, which is something Chip Foose reimagines as a custom delivery van.

Man Chip Foose' hand drawn renders really hit the nostalgia for me. Overhaulin' was my stuff in highschool.
same! 💯🤙 stay safe out there man. cheers ✌
Always was curious what they come up with. Love creative shows.
It's crazy how good he is at drawing AND designing cars
When he mentioned remodeling a Pacer, I immediately thought of the AMC Pacer that was on Pimp My Ride. Those guys did a great job on the paint design.
Awesome drawing! My dad got me into AMC, we were supposed to do an AMX but cancer took him from me. Love all that you do for the automotive industry, and fulfilling people's dreams with masterpieces!
I'm always amazed on the work Chip Foose manages to quickly whip out. That "sketch" is defenetly high quality artwork!
LOVE IT .Chip! I had a 74 Matador. Traded a 72 Vega for it! After the Teflon coating wore off the Vegas engine walls, it got only 100 miles to the quart of oil. The only car my wife ever agreed on during our" 17;year marriage. That car was comfortable and fast. I’ve had multiple AMC cars, and they were great cars, under rated, mostly 6 cylinders. Still drive a JEEP with a 4.0 cylinder(242 c.i.).
Seeing Chip Foose draw is a great experience, every time.
yup... still the best
Chip, you should make a video series based on this theme- taking what is often considered weird/ugly cars and reworking them into something cool. An early 60's Valiant comes to mind for me. I'm sure the RUclips audience can give you plenty of other suggestions. P.S.- Your artistic ability and vision is truly a gift, thanks for sharing it with us!
Foose is too cool. His design and humble attitude is amazing. Bless u man.
I worked for the local AMC dealer in high school and drove a Pacer with a 304 V8 as a parts runner car. Fun car to drive! Handled great!
I bought one when it turned into a station wagon and a hundred thousand miles later I still loved it...
When I was in high school we didn't laugh at anyone's car we were just happy to be riding and not walking. 1983-86
No way that thing went a hundred K without investing 8x the vehicles original purchase price. It didn't even have a 6 digit odometer, the engineers never anticipated people living to see the odometer kick over 99,999 once let alone twice.
We had one....it turned into a toaster
my man Chip is stroking out masterpieces with a bic round stic!! For everyone out there that thinks they are being held back because of the gear they have, it's not the equipment, it's the person operating it.
Really like how he says “If you use a Hellcat drivetrain” so calmly like why not 700 plus hp in a pacer
Devil Hellcat Peacer - Sounds really fun Mr. Foose should build one just to see how many heads will turn rolling in that hot-rod..
I would.
I was thinking LS swap until he said he'll cat and I started realizing a car that wide would actually have the room to do the hellcat. It would take some huge balls to drive that wheel base with that motor but hey it would be fun.
Look it up: there are V,8 modded pavers out there already!
It's -the Stig's- Binky's American cousin.
To me, (a non-artistic fellow) it's nothing short of a pure religious experience to observe someone take a pencil, some paper, & effortlessly free-hand a masterpiece, the likes of which Michelangelo himself would be awestruck upon witnessing.
This Foose fella is an absolute savant when it comes to creating resto-mod cars on paper, then turning paper imagery into an actual jaw droppingly beautiful machine! Very few people in this world posses brilliance at this level. My gaawwwdd...
My girlfriend at the time had one, I called it the pleasure dome.
LOL there is a strip club in PA called the Pleasure Dome
I should have added that we were in high school and I think I have been by that place in PA.
LOL
Hahaha, she probably did.
my creepy uncle had one at the time, we called it the Terror Dome...
In 1986 I attended a car show in either South Carolina or Killeen TX and there was a beautiful chopped Pacer that honestly looked like a US made Porsche... Just awesome
My friends and I would indeed laugh when we saw a Pacer. I think Chip’s rendering looks like an evolved Gremlin.
I was in college when my parents bought the first year Pacer. It was cutting edge design and just screamed future kitsch. It turned heads like the weinermobile and could not have been more fun to drive. I found out it was very difficult to make whoopie in it on a hot summer night. We loved that car.
Chip, appreciate your rendition of AMC's Pacer. Having owned 5 Pacers, 3 coupes and 2 wagons I always had trouble with the lines around the back window area. The wagons look I like is super cool. and works better as a hauler. The widows go completely down into the door with the indoor panel rising up above the window line. So with the window down your arm is actually "up" ont op of the indoor panel. the door handle is a good change as the stock handle could be difficult opening up the big heavy door.
and the passenger door is about a little over one inch wider on the passenger side. keep the glass stock, as the front windshield is massive. some models could be had with wing windows! wagons had rear as stock as well as front wings. I drive with windows down and inside as you drive hiway speeds I found little to not wind buffeting from inside. the pacer is that wide that the riders are in a sort of quite zone. My executive Pacer was bronze in color so thanks for taking on the Pacer!
I love the look of those classic AMC door handles, unfortunately I never had the pleasure (or pain) of opening one. I imagine it's quite awkward and cumbersome, but it looks cool. Seems aerodynamic too.
@@Keranu Operating the door handles is no more awkward than any other type. It is easy because you pull the handle and the door opens in one move. Easy to get used to. They are aerodynamic, flush with the body and the lock is recessed.
@@falcon664 I was concerned with wrist positioning when opening the door. I guess if you're using the right hand on the driver side door it wouldn't matter so much, but might still cause some tension on the wrist. I can't help but think of these things because my wrists suck, even after lifting weights.
They do look so cool and aerodynamic though, I have wondered why more cars haven't implemented a similar design. The closest we have today is Tesla.
@@Keranu Thanks for the reply, Keranu, that is an interesting point to consider. I am assuming the the wrist issue involves rotation. In that case, to open you would have your arm in a straight line from elbow to fingers, (like offering a handshake). Put fingers behind the paddle and pull the arm straight back toward you and the door opens. There is no wrist movement necessary. Ford had a semi-recessed handle that you had to pull up, I found that more difficult as you had to turn the hand palm up and pull the handle out and upward.
As a supplier to AMC ,Jeep plant in Toledo the were having issues with the paint I supplied them for military jeeps. Bottom line is that I had to go through the design center where they had just finished the full clay mockup of the pacer. I thought it was a very cool looking car. I was sworn to not to tell any body what I saw and I didn’t , till now. Thanks Chip.
Build one please. :)
This would be a nice reality to see.
Excellent rendition , being low and wide I feel a 5.3 LS swap with a tremec 5 spd would be fun to drive . Thanks for sharing . Cheers
@@mikepoint4983 NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! MOPAR or don't build it. If you want a different engine then Ford or International. At least it follows the oilline. (bloodline) Ford's first vehicles were supplied by the Dodge Brothers MOtor PARts. And if it didn't happen beforehand and I will argue it, the first Super Duty's engine was definitely an International.
It's not only replacing the glass with sheet metal that improves this car - you also squared off the bulbous corners and made it similar to the Ford Pinto ..... and THAT really does the trick❗️
Congrats you updated the AMC Gremlin as well...
Chip is the nicest, most down to earth, sincere guy!!
Remember that the right door is larger the left door .
My parents got one for my bro for college but I got to drive it to high school before he took delivery. I was teased about driving the fishbowl. I loved it.
Add a giant blind spot and call it cool.
The visibility was something that a lot of buyers of this car loved.
The AMC was the inspiration for the Porsche 928. The outwards visibility was important. Chip completely misinterprets this car and takes us backwards (kinda like what he did to the E-type Jaguar). Oh well. Never mind.
@@geraldryan7544
Some people just have their own idea of "cool". That the humble Pacer would inspire the Porsche 928.. now I can't unsee that. Thank you. It's like the Corvair being inspired ad fairly dumpy looking European compact.
Having had a few of these cars, they were really fun to drive. With a built 232 straight six and a set of cool overs on all four corners, plus the anti-sway bars from an AMX Javelin, it took home some trophies from the autocross course.
Chip is a LEGEND! Will probably never be another like him, class act!
Hello Chip!... My Son Angel ,who passed away 10 years ago, was your biggest fan here in México!! never lost your show in discovery over haulin..every month we bought Automovil magazine...since He goes never buy again😪 and now that I saw this video remember the emotion when we both togheter saw your show every week..Thanks a lot Chip!! For many good moments beside my Son!! Congrats from México!!
Now it looks like a 79 pinto !
That's the comment I came here looking for. My thoughts exactly.
I was thinking Pinto having an allergic reaction to something.
@@gray_space_alien ya, first I was thinking a pinto with some extra junk in the trunk.
A fat one!
Gremlin that has been 'on the lot' for a bit.
I owned 2 pacer woody wagons both were Awesome cars! 1 had a factory 304 V8 I miss AMC They were way ahead of their time in ideas!
Foose is an amazing artist with pens and steel.
Mr. Chip Foose is an absolute National Treasure!
The 70,s were the Best Years of my LIFE!
Chip, like you said at the end, I'd sure drive it too. Looking down at a Pacer from above, they looked like a "moon" car. Odd as it sounds, I wish I still had my old 72 Gremlin X. I can only imagine what you could do with that. Funky little car for sure and you had to be able to take some ribbing but it was a fun little car. You are an amazingly talented guy Chip, thanks for sharing with us mere mortals.
I actually liked the Pacer at the time and wished I had one. This version, ME WANT!
We had a '75 about the same color as the one in the upper left of Chip's pictures. Coming home from church at night I would be curled up in the back staring out the huge hatchback window at the stars. It made for a great moving observatory. :) It was also low and wide and took corners like a champ. Few also know that the drivers side door is not the same size at the passenger side, one side allows easier access to the back seat.
I remember when I was a kid and my cousin had this car they called it the fish bowl
We had a Gremlin and it was... well it was a Gremlin.
My Father worked for AMC as head service manager. We had AMC cars every 6 months from rambles to ambassadors, matadors, to hornets, and yes a pacer. My favorite car is an AMX 69’. Would love to see a pacer modded like he drew.
That design could easily be in "pre stage" ready to light the rears on the quarter.
Excellent work
So much for the old adage "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." Never liked the Pacer and never would have thought that anyone could make it look good. Chip Foose never ceases to amaze.
A little chop would still help.
Lamb or pork?
@@alexveldhuis6004 Why not both?
@@dumahim Indeed, as doorhandles as well as hood ornaments
@Wise One As long as it doesn't clash with the paint colour of choice, yeah sure. Veal is pale so hard to find a match for maybe?
Yep, Dad had one and it was gutless. We lived in Alaska and one day he slapped chains on the rear wheels (lots of snow that day) and we went up the side of a mountain. Not much after that he got an AMC Gremlin. AMC put out some nice muscle too. For you young guys that don't know, check out the 1968-1972 AMC AMX and AMC Javelin.
outstanding!!!
now build it, with a crate hemi
@Brian Wilson Hellcat yeah
Mazda RX-8 rotary.
What a great idea, but have you ever seen the engine bay in one of these? How about a mid engine hemi under glass?
No use a LS.....its never swapped in anything
@@lukasgarage956 Maybe I'm showing my age, but Seems like around the Pacer was built AMC was using a lot of MOPAR parts. Loved your reply though.
Mind BLOWN!!!! You made one of my top 5 worst looking cars, look GOOD! And with a hellcat drivetrain? WOW! good combo. You are the man! God bless you, and yours!
Would love to have that drawing framed hanging in my apt.
The Pacer was my moms and mother-in-law’s favorite car. The both said they would buy it again if they came out with a new version. You just sent mommy car to the sports shop. Love it!
you made the pacer into a gremlin.... 😆😆😆😆
As weird as the Pacer seems, its design actually predates features of many modern vehicles of today; low hood, shaved door handles, doors that got into the roof, aggressive “tumble home (the slope of the sides as they reach for the roofline) - even rack and pinion steering! Originally designed for a rotary engine sourced from GM, the cancellation of that engine formed AMC into one compromise after another, but from a design perspective, its a landmark vehicle. Glad to see Chip Foose recognizes that.
Careful what you say Chip. Someone might take you up on that.
Also, that drivetrain would be nice, but is very expensive. How about a built 360 with a stick shift? Now that would be fun. Either way it would be a hand full with that short wheelbase.
@@markbremmer8642 Sure would help the checking account.
@@markbremmer8642 even a 340 would make that thing boogie.......i don't think that chassis is very heavy.......much lighter than say a duster or a valiant or a square box rambler from late 60's........
@@markbremmer8642 making it handle would be some work though.......getting it to run would be easier.......
@@markbremmer8642 cool concept though.......i would drive it.......even if it wasn't fast.......
Mr. Foose, directly from the rendering room. Way better than a gremlin render. I'd of brought one of these if it was offered like this. Great Scott!
Only Foose has balls to take on and really improve the Pacer.
Hey, it is a drawing, why not let the ol' imagination run free? He made something cool out of something that was widely known as dorky. He is a designer and didn't even take a stab at the Pacer's designer either. That's Chip Foose, makes the design, works on the car, paints the car... Yet is still humble enought to give credit where credit is due.
Many guys have done Pacers. Most dont have Foose skills but I've seen some badass Pacers. True story I was rollin with my cousin in a 66 Chevelle built 327 muncie 4 speed. 456 geared 12 bolt. And we stopped for gas an seen a Pacer across the street with fat tires. When we pulled out we pulled across the street an found that Pacer had a tunnel ram intake with two Holley four barrels sticking out the hood! Good times. PEACE!!!!
The Bob Ross of the custom car world!! Great work Mr. Foose!!
We need a Chip to Redesign the Cybertruck.
Jacob Leech that would be interesting to see.
But I like the Cyber truck... However I'd entertain another being made.
Redesign the cyber truck into something cool?Chip is good but he is not God.
Lower it and put roller skate wheels on it... it's not hard to do what Chip does.
My buddy in high school had his mom's Pacer to go to school. I had a bunch of rides in it. Was okay and it got looks. His dad had a 66 Ambassador. That was a great car too. They always bought AMC. I'd love to see this car finished.
I'd love to see a Pacer done on Overhaulin'. To see how Chip would actually improve it in real life. I think it woukd look fantastic 👍
Is there a car Foose couldn't make to look cool?
@@mrmatt7210 The Aztek. He improved it but frankly, beyond saving.
I couldn't draw a stick figure if my life depended on it but Chip can make an AMC Pacer look like a million bucks! Only Chip could pull that one off.
Love the design, but to me, it now looks like a modern interpretation of the AMC Gremlin.
but is that a good thing? hahaha
I thought it looked like a pinto just about ready to overdose on steroids.
My thoughts exactly
@@aaronallison1604 your a dork
My thoughts exactly. Looks like a Gremlin.
Chip I worked at AMC when one of the first Pacers came down the line at the lakefront plant in Kenosha. I was a shaper finisher in the lead booth when I was 19.
The design engineers and executives followed it as it traveled the assembly line. As soon as we saw it eyes began to roll and every worker start laughing their asses off. They got so made at us, OMG. You could hear laughing as it entered every station. We all joked and said this is the POS that’s going to keep us working? We’re done.
"Your going to spend more than that if you bring your car here" . I will one day hear that from Chip & be able to pay more...
YES! Chip Fuggin Foose! Shout out 2000s car shows.
My mom had one when I was a kid. She would drop my sister off at high school and my sister said the other kids said it looked like an upside down fishbowl on wheels. She hated that car. It was kind of embarrassing. One day it threw a rod through the side of the block, so my mom "upgraded" to a Chevy Citation.
Ahhh, the Chevy Citation! I had an orange manual trans Citation in the early 80's, it did some nice smokey front wheel burnouts, kinda ugly though.
@@jp2246 Was yours an X-11? I remember seeing those running around. I believe they had 4 speeds in them.
@@88tcoupe No, but at the time I sure wished it was the X-11! Plain Jane manual 4 door, but it did have the 6 cyl and was peppy
@@jp2246 Neat! My mom's was a two door V6 auto. It seemed decently powerful at the time.
Some models were ordinary. The little two door coupe wasn't bad looking actually. The v6 was an ok driver, the 4 cylinder was forgetable. The X11 got a little more serious in the handling department with wheel and suspension upgrades.
This guy's talent is super human. Always love watching him draw.
Should have added a port hole like the Pinto wagon 😉
Chip could draw an outhouse and make it cool.
Didn't think anybody could make a fishbowl on wheels look sweet.
Dude nailed it.
Please somebody explain to me the "genius" of turning a pacer into a pinto??🤢
Thank you
I miss your talents on tv. Thanks that completely changed the look of the car.
In the early '80s, I saw a custom Pacer with the bubble hatchback and a Corvette front clip. One crazy ride!
What's Orange and slammed and looks like it is moving fast while sitting still?
This bad mamajamma right here. I would drive this just to show it off. You never cease to amaze me, Chip. This is a beaut.
I have never been fond of the Pacer, but the elements that you used keep a lot of the AMC design style, with some good twists. The tail light across the back showed up in the Eagle and Spirit and Concord styles from the early-mid eighties, and slimming it down and adding the chrome trim keeps it "retro futuristic" and adding the Camaro bumper in the rear and up front goes along the same lines. The style of the wheels mixed the early 70's Javelin hubcaps and the Matchbox looking hubcaps of the Eagle nicely, and I thing that is pretty close to the gold color my '86 Eagle wagon had. Mr. Foose you are one heck of an artist! Those changes would look great on a Gremlin or Spirit, too!
Thank you RUclips for suggest me this! First time I saw this guy and I'm already happy so see him draw like this! Wow....
Thanks for watching. Feel free to check out more of our video collection. You may like some of our other stuff: www.hagerty.com/media/videos/
Wow ... talking about making a race horse out of a mule! You've got some imagination and talent Chip!
Timeless re-design... Outstanding!
You are correct that the windows did not drop completely down but AMC solved your elbow problem in a rather unique way. The interior door trim was raised to compensate where the glass was above the door. One could still comfortably leave their elbow rest on the door as they drove. Wish more manufacturers did this today.
Chip you are truly The Master & I truly wish to meet you one day
Wow Chip, you just turned an AMC Pacer into an AMC Gremlin, with an even bigger blind spot.
How ingenious...
His ability to create somthing in his mind and then to actually put it on paper always astounded me. Watching this guy do his craft is just amazing.
Who needs Photoshop when you have Chip Foose. Amazing Stuff
Oh yeah you have to build that now you drew it !!! It's awesome to watch you work thank you.
I always thought the Pacer was mistreated and dismissed as a failure, when it had so much unusual character already baked in. Good on Chip for taking the plunge along with any heat from 'custom snobs' who would rather poo poo this as a base for a cool ride than open their minds to it's potential. Now all we need is an episode of Overhaulin where this car comes to life.
Looks pretty good. I remember seeing a modified Pacer in 77 or so with a filled rear window. Pacer was really liked by lots of people. Wheelchair users really loved the wide doors- easy to get the chair in and out! Go ahead if you want, Chip... BUT... No LS. 401 AMC!
The AMC Pacer is still one of, if not the, best looking cars of all time!
Beautiful. I can imagine the original door handle thinned a bit and rotated 180º. This way, you would always reach with the hand that puts you cleanly behind the door.
I loved watching you work, good skills. But I loved the Pacer, mostly for all the glass. What a great car for touring the open road in. The only mod I ever considered was AWD. Not 4x4 but AWD. Not to go rock climbing but for when the road turns to dirt, you just keep going.
Chip's talent is amazing.
I had an AMC Spirit in college - LOVED that car!
Just in case there was any doubt, here is proof that Chip Foose can make any car cool.
This makes me want to find a Pacer and build it. Thanks Chip.
LOL, Truth be told, we " owned " a brown Pacer hatchback when I was a teen. My eldest brother ( LOL ) attempted to teach me to drive with it. It was a stick and the driving lesson was enhanced with difficulty because it was like manuevering a tank. Even then I recall asking myself ' why ' does this car have so much interior volume for a so-called small car. The doors were thick, heavy and long. It's center of gravity was decent due to it's width. Even though the body roll was like a 747 banking for a landing. It held the road good. But it could not escape reality that it looked like a Chevy Chevette with water retention issues. LOL. Even with all it's " design oddities " it was fun to have had a hands on encounter with it. AMC Pacer, may you rest in pieces.
Love watching the illustration happen, but loosing the window killed it.
With a small block and a real suspension, that’s one hot car. I had one. Very stable in corners, even with the spongy stock suspension.
If drawing cars was all Foose did, he would still be a world famous artist. Clear vision, raw talent and hard work, a real mentor.
I remember riding in the back of this car and loving the fact that we could see everything around us. Of course, we weren't wearing seat belts and didn't realize how bad it would have been with all of that glass if we had been in an accident. We really felt it was a car of the future and everyone thought it looked cool.
Simply amazing thanks Chip! PACER!!
Best looking Pacer I've ever seen,👍,your the best Mr. FOOSE
It looks fantastic, build it. You are the man to do it.
Chip Foose could make a bus look like a Corvette. This picture is sic!
That man is a work of art !!!!!! One of a kind !!!!
We need more of these drawings from Chip
I had a 79 Pacer wagon it was yellow and the lower portion was done in a wood grain vinyl. They made it look like a Woody. All that was missing was the surf boards and the beach!
Build it! Great drawing Chip, I am a fan.
