I bought this lens a while ago and have shot events, portraits, boudoir, nature and street with it. It allows me to shoot inconspicuously in low (or no) light situations. The combination of this .95 lens and IBIS is gold. Focusing is actually quite easy. I've assigned one of the function buttons of my E-M5 mkii to enlarge the EVF image. You can select the amount (I prefer 4x or higher) of enlargement, set the aperture to .95 and focusing is a breeze thanks to the extreme shallow depth of field. Once your focus is set, you dial in the aperture you want to use and off you go!
I‘ve worked this way a while ago, but found it quite cumbersome and came to the conclusion that this is-for me-not suitable for portraits. I don’t mind manual focusing, but electronic contacts (like Loawa does it with some lenses) helps a lot!

Plenty of fun with this lens I received recently. Surprisingly, in bright daylight at the beach, it is not as sharp as I expected, even stopped down. The plastic Olympus 40-150 mm produced sharper photos the same day at 40 mm. Lots of chromatic aberrations too with this 35 mm, hard to remove in post. But, the color rendition is something and highly seductive. Beside, the photos look very natural and smooth. I have to tame that lens and will use it mainly in low light. Thanks for the excellent review Robin.
I´ve ordered this lens few days ago. For this money it is sharp. I´ve done some comparison shots with the Sigma 18-50 F2.8. Shot on F2.8, with same time, ISO and I was impressed. Yes there is some chromatic aberrnation, however I think it is a good value manual lens.
Fuji 50mm f1.0 is my favourite lens now, was not planning to buy it at all but rushed on it for a wedding and tbh the results are quite magical. Have kept it, now it's the number one ..
Yep. But it's always possible to spend more over time on buying multiple lenses that don't get as much enjoyment or use! If you want manual focus / no electronics there are plenty of cheaper options with interesting characteristics for sure, probably none as sharp, maybe best to reserve manual focus for the genuine film camera that doesn't support it
I understand everyone has their preferences. I actually like the manual focus and the experience of being able to control the point of focus. However, i don't tend to shoot moving subjects that often. Anyway, you got some amazing images, and even the flared images looked really good. Keep up the good work.
I recently bought the Brightin Star and already had the 7Artisans and have to say at wide open the 7 seems to be sharper. But at least when you nail the focus, it has less abortions directly on your subject compared to the Star. The Star is easier to focus and resists unwanted turns due to its slightly higher turning resistance, but if you want to stop down beyond f4, you can't stop in single stops. So if you feel secure at manual focusing I would highly recommend to buy the 7Artisans alternative. It may cost a bit more (~50 bucks) but it really pays of in the long run.
Update: The Star indeed performs way worse compared to the 7 in tems of image quality. In all aspects. I can not recommend the Star. It's a good example for buy cheap buy twice.
Results look appealing! And for around $200 (on Amazon at this moment), this is a bargain. And you even addressed distortion (barrel distortion is usual with this type of lens). I'm not into portrait, but I might add this lens to my "collection", as it could be nice for different subjects.
Very interesting lens. Are these available in Malaysia? Perhaps you would like to try their 2x macro lens next. I haven't seen much macro from you lately. Well at least we still have some options. I would love to have Sigma 10-18 f/2.8 for MFT but they have already given up on MFT.
OM System and Panasonic need to stop playing around and come out with a series of.095 autofocus lenses that compliment each other (and at a competitive price). I don't know how many I'd use personally, but I want this format to survive and offer new things to everyone.
From what I heard, before Olympus came out with their F/1.2 PRO trio of lenses, they considered making them F/1.0 aperture. They decided against the idea because the cost, size and even the weight would have been more than most consumers would want to deal with. The size and weight go against the m4/3rds philosophy and the expensive cost meant few consumers would have bought them just to pick up 2/3 a stop more light than the F/1.2s they eventually went with.
Panasonic Leica have lenses at f1.2. They can be pricey even on sale. The lenses are superb though and I don’t see what a series of f.95 lenses would benefit from a company financially. Also, corner sharpness can be an issue.
@@entrigueall2661 I understand the appeal. More light gathering, lower ISO numbers, less noise in the images. Plus shallower depth of field if you want it. In order to match the shallow DOF of a full frame F/1.4 , F/1.2 or a F/0.95 lens the m4/3 lens would have to be HUMONGOUS! Learning to track moving subjects with manual focus is in my opinion not that hard. People could do it before autofocus cameras existed (ok, they had those focusing screens) and learning to do it with an OM-1 just takes a little bit of practise. I have successfully shot birds in flight with my old Nikon 500 f/4 on my E-M1!
This is interesting! Just a few days ago I had my camera bag open and needed something between 25 and 45mm… I really like 35mm focal length for many situation. If this lens had electronic coupling, I’d buy it immediately.
Yeah to keep the costs down, they made the lens fully manual, which was fine by me. Since the aperture ring is clicked, it is quite easy to adjust F-number efficiently on the go.
What does electronic coupling give that is a dealbreaker? I'm asking out of curiosity, cause most of my life I've only shot manual cameras and manual lenses and never gave electronic coupling a second thought.
@@KNURKonesur With electronic coupling I don’t need to tell the camera which lens I am using (needed for IBIS), I can choose a smaller aperture and still focus wide open without changing the f-stop after focusing and, last, but not least, PhotoLab will have a lens profile that is automatically applied on raw processing.

It seems to be an APS-C lens (available for Fuji), and there the 35 mm make perfect sense! But also for m43, as it gives a short telephoto lens (70 mm FF equivalent, a perfect portrait lens). I'm really thinking about buying it.
Indeed. I've subsequently researched the lens mount availability, but it seems that (for Nikon) there is only amount for the 'Z' series of cameras, which is somewhat disappointing - unless I also purchase a converter to fit my DSLR. Ultimately, it would not be worth the venture.
@@andrewtongue7084 I don't think that the Z mount can be adapted to the old AI mount or anything else from DSLR times - the flange distance is much to large with the old SLR and DSLR mounts. You can only adapt SLR and DSLR lenses to modern mirrorless mounts (or Leica M mount, as it has a pretty short flange distance - it is mirrorless ;-)).
No, you're right, I was incorrect there. Either way, I lose out ! Still, a pity. A Z series body is unjustifiable - at least for the moment - but thank you for illustrating my error - enjoy your evening !
On the Brightnin Star website it is described as an APSC lens although it is made for different mounts. What is the FOV of this lens on MFT? Is it equivalent to a FOV of a FF 35mm on FF or a 28mm lens on FF or something else?!
It should be 70mm on MFT cameras. When the manufacturer says apsc lens, it usually describes that the image circle will only cover a sensor up to that size. So on apsc camera this would be around 52mm and MFT would be 70mm.
I think it is possible but just imagine it... it will struggle focusing at 0.95 following an eye at 60fps, probably out of focus a most of the time... probably is too dificult, to much effort and.price, for nothing, because f1.4 is fine and cheap and get bokeh
It is difficult, if not almost impossible, to make an F 0.95 autofocus lens, many have tried but failed. So I can accept the fact that it's manual Also because the micro four thirds system has a huge depth of field so it becomes easier to focus manually
I bought this lens after watching this video. I tried it with some of my first street photography attempts - nighttime in my home town, Christmas markets - on my OM-5. A bit heavier than I expected, but still very comfortable to handle; and like other commenters here I actually enjoy the manual lens experience - at least in relaxed conditions! Image quality is great, any flaws I put down to my own inexperience. The only problem is that, _somehow,_ the crop factor of M4/3 slipped my mind, and there were a few moments where I wished this 35mm lens was a bit wider for the scenes I wanted to photograph! (A strange experience when, normally, I want to get tighter on wildlife) A minor complaint; I'll keep taking the lens out, but it's also made me look up the wider Laowa and Voigtlander f0.95 lenses. Of course I wouldn't complain if Brightin Star added something like that to their catalogue, either...
I never really cared much about sharpness, cause for me it's all about bokeh quality with such lenses. And CA. I don't see how this particular lens is any better in terms of bokeh or CA compared to the rest of the bright primes. Yet it's nice to have yet another affordable option
The thing is - ALL other F0.95 is soft wide open, and they all produce somewhat similar looking bokeh anyway. What stands out is the sharp wide open on the Brightin Star, which was impressive considering the asking price.
It's available on the Brightin Star UK website. Seen so much praise for it, starting with Robin's video here, that I had to jump on the 40% sale. But then my bank blocked the card payment to the merchant. 🤨 Bought it through eBay instead - slightly cheaper still, but a longer wait... Funny, I didn't have this problem with the 7artisans UK site. Maybe because they had UK stock?
It sure is an interesting lens, but I disagree a little with you Robin on the quality of the bokeh: in some of the pictures I find the bokeh rather ‘nervous’ and not so pleasing at all. In that respect: the zuiko F1.2 pro lenses do a lot better (altough pricewise that mat not be a fair comparison). Anyway, nice to have new m43 lenses coming on the market
Trust me, in those cases, F1.2 Olympus, or any "best bokeh" lenses would fare no better. They were extremely backlit, creating some harshness. I've shot enough with the Olympus F1.2 lenses.
The sharpest f0.95 ever? Really? I am not denying this is probably a great lens at this price point (I have not tried it) but this seems like a very bold statement
I’ve watched a lot of reviews on f0.95 or f1 lenses, and I think this is the sharpest (in the center wide open) of any I can remember. That includes some vintage legends.
I am not sure watching and comparing reviews is a very scientific way to make judgement on sharpness. Until I see a review that makes an actual comparison of this lens vs other comparable lenses I’ll reserve my judgement. Again I am not claiming this lens is bad and I expect it’s probably great value but my point is that lacking any proper comparison this sort of title is just meaningless click-and-bait
It would be an amazing lens, but because of the creamy smooth bokeh, it's not for me. I don't know why so many modern photographers go for a super clean and clinical look and dislike busy bokeh lenses, saying they're harsh and distracting. They're only harsh and distracting if they're used for the wrong purposes :D In the end I'm staying with the TTartisan 35/0.95, which maybe isn't as sharp as the Britghtin Star, but has a more vintage looking bokeh which I like for portraits.
My buddy has this lens, until i got hands on the *(=Laowa33mm F0.95 APO*. Would love to see that come to the Olympus, it performs as good as it looks (except for long focus ring) but other than that it beats out the Brightin Star, TTArtisan and Voigtländer. 35mm. I hope Laowa can send you one for testing! :)

No, you're right, I was incorrect there. Either way, I lose out ! Still, a pity. A Z series body is unjustifiable - at least for the moment - but thank you for illustrating my error - enjoy your evening !
How well is the focuspeaking appearing with this lens?
I did not use focus peaking. I used magnify for pin point accuracy
Hi Robin, where did you get your hand strap from?
Lazada
Hey Robin. How did you manage to get the shot of the clouds with 35mm?
I don't see any difficulty with that, just point the lens on the clouds
Is it even possible to build AF an into a lens like this? How much bigger/heavier would it have to be?
I think it is possible but just imagine it... it will struggle focusing at 0.95 following an eye at 60fps, probably out of focus a most of the time... probably is too dificult, to much effort and.price, for nothing, because f1.4 is fine and cheap and get bokeh
It is difficult, if not almost impossible, to make an F 0.95 autofocus lens, many have tried but failed.
So I can accept the fact that it's manual Also because the micro four thirds system has a huge depth of field so it becomes easier to focus manually
Thank you :)
Just bought a TTArtisan 7.5mm F2 :D
Thanks!
Thanks for the support!
Bonjour, avez vous trouvé des objectifs lawoa en 0,95 avec autofocus ? Merci beaucoup !
Very nice lence
I really wanna buy the sharpest mf lens, kindly give me your ideas about Brightin Star and 7artisans 35 f0.95mm. Thank you, my friend Robin
@@robinwong the Meike 35 0.95 is pretty sharp wide open as well.
nice
Cheers
Is this same as 7 Artisans 35mm 0.95?
No, but I think it's a repackaged Meike 35 0.95 whic I have and is pretty sharp wide open at mid to long distances.
F/ 0.95 on a M43…. It is equivalent at 2 on FF… it s not unusual ;)… I ll keep my C/Y CZ Distagon 35mm f/2.8
Not available in UK! :(
Yeah, guess it‘s the same for all of Europe.
It is, just Google it.
£179.99
I am sure it is selling somewhere
It's available on the Brightin Star UK website. Seen so much praise for it, starting with Robin's video here, that I had to jump on the 40% sale. But then my bank blocked the card payment to the merchant. 🤨 Bought it through eBay instead - slightly cheaper still, but a longer wait...
Funny, I didn't have this problem with the 7artisans UK site. Maybe because they had UK stock?
Laowa Argus is the sharpest f0.95 lens.
@@robinwong👍in that case: it’s high on my wishlist😏
Additional to say , that it is an APS-C lens ......not fullframe
It would be an amazing lens, but because of the creamy smooth bokeh, it's not for me. I don't know why so many modern photographers go for a super clean and clinical look and dislike busy bokeh lenses, saying they're harsh and distracting. They're only harsh and distracting if they're used for the wrong purposes :D In the end I'm staying with the TTartisan 35/0.95, which maybe isn't as sharp as the Britghtin Star, but has a more vintage looking bokeh which I like for portraits.
Nikon noct. Is crying home to mama.
Since I have no encounter with the Laowa, I cannot make any comments. But I have not seen any F0.95 lenses that sharp wide open.
Bokehlicious!
Oh yes
Sadly on Fuji its not quite as sharp.
Maybe it is the X-Trans sensor's problem?
laughs in Nikon NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct Lens
Robin, pros don't need AF when shooting 0.95 manual lens. These 0.95 lens when you zoom in your jpeg at 400% it will break. it doesn't have enough pixel
Pros don't zoom in 400%.
@@robinwong pros do zoom in to check for blurriness. I owned these 0.95 lens i know their weakness lol
What clickbait is this. NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct is like "are you joking?"
What makes you think the Nikon is sharper? *Wink
Anytime they start a video like this they where Def paid to say how good it was😂
sharpest? saw a review it looks terrible at 0.95 very soft and ghosting
Crazy sharp. Maybe the reviewer did a mistake.
How he can know, when he has his eyes all the time closed?????
Where did all these racist comments come from gosh
@@robinwong Why you think it is racist .??? I do have many Asian friends, it is a joke. Relax
@@slawomirczajkowski9481 A joke? Funny man..........
Looks cheap and a Leica knockoff 👎
As squinty as it gets. 😆
As racist as a comment gets.
@@robinwong I said squinty, not yellow..duh.. 😆
I understand everyone has their preferences. I actually like the manual focus and the experience of being able to control the point of focus. However, I don't tend to shoot moving subjects that often. Anyway, you got some amazing images, and even the flared images looked really good. Keep up the good work.
