The photo of the three friends sitting is beautiful!

Admittedly, when watching your reviews I never care about the lens you review. I'm just here for the slideshow admiring the beauty you create, no matter what optic. The most established gear reviewers should take a leaf out of your book regarding sample photos as theirs are often less than satisfactory.

I appreciate the vote of confidence! These reviews take a while because I actually get out and use the lens in a variety of situations. Glad to hear it resonates.

Great review, I will give this a try. I used to have Mitacon's but left it somewhere by accident. It wasn't the best lens in any mean (not cheap, either) but I learnt how to use a manual focus lens and had so much fun with it. I like the looks of this lens also.

    Lovely work and review.
I kinda feel I have had my fill of fast manual focus lenses. I own the IBELUX 40/.85 and I doubt many can top that for 'characterful' look. It was overpriced, it's heavy but it is a lot of fun and I wholeheartedly understand and agree with your sentiments where you say these kinda lenses are not what you are really looking for for client work, but for photographing the mundane they are a lot of fun and you never quite know what the result is going to be.
I find my Kipon hard to justify to keep, as it doesn't really earn a dime. If the lens had AF I actually think it would see more paid work, it's just a lot of the stuff I do is slightly faster paced (I don't really take clients out for a shoot and have an abundance of time to play around with different glass and looks).
I really wish more companies tried to make GOOD characterful AF lenses, SIRUI seemingly the only brand thus far having a go.

Great review. Thank you. Considering the lens limitations, you have managed to eke out some fine shots. Defiantly a vintage vibe to the colours rendered - is this due to the lens itself, or one of the film simulations in camera or shot in Raw the post processing ? Either way great results. 👍

A lens is a lens in the end, eh? It's a bit of a mix in terms of the colours. The lens provides a base that feels nostalgic, Fujifilm amplifies that, and I finish it off. :)

Hi again Dylan - just watched your review on the Laowa 33mm f0.95, loving the red ring effect & the fact it has very low CA. Setting aside the cost, size & weight difference over the brighten star. Which lens would you say gives the best centre sharpness? I'm sort of thinking go for the Brightin star and if its good enough for my needs, then so be it. If not then upgrade to the Laowa at a later date. Or mite just go straight for the Laowa. Cheers. 👍

Did you get a good copy? I've seen non soft, sharp images at 0.95 close up with this lens in other reviews claiming it's way better than 7artisans and Mitakon

With a sample size of one, I can't really answer that question. In my experience, it wasn't all that sharp, but better than the Mitakon I had years ago, which was absolute garbage. Hands down, the sharpest f/0.95 lenses I've ever used were the Laowas. They're fantastic.

Interesting. I also have this lens in X-mount. My apeture markings go 2.8, half stop, f4,f8,f16. My f4 mark is in the same place as your 5.6. 😅

Wow! Perhaps there are multiple iterations of this? I might ask them and see what gives!
