@@drewww8778yes, I have tested TT-Artisian and compared to it my copy of Fuji 27mm. Literally the best value photographic purchase I've ever made. It's short comings are the vignette which can be minimised by stopping down or eliminated in post, easily enough. The flaring is common in a lot of cheap Chinese lenses for sure. You can see the flaring in the view finder/rear lcd and recompose to minimise or eliminate it or even use it artistically if you want. Once you are aware of its shortcomings it can produce excellent images which are sharp edge to edge and have a really nice colour rendition. I even prefer to use this lens to use this lens over the highly rated Fujinon XC 35mm f2 on occasion. I have taken test shots at similar apertures and the TT Artisans has superior edge sharpness when stopped down a bit.

Hey Mark! Super interesting lens, I wonder if they'll bother making it in a Canon M mount at this point, I hope they do. Off topic question for you, I have heard that one of the "problems" with the Canon M6 Mark II is that a lot of the M mount lenses lack the ability to fully resolve all the megapixels on that sensor. Do you think the Viltrox primes are "enough lens" for that sensor, or should I invest in the Sigma primes, or another option entirely?
Samyang 18mm f2.8 comes to mind. Not too big, not too expensive, I think people are generally positive about it. I don't own it though, so make sure to check some reviews.
Just for kicks I compared portrait shots taken in low light with the TTArtisans at f2.8 on a Fuji with the Nikon 40 f2 and the 35 f1.8 taken at f4 on the Nikon Zf for similar depth of field. I was blown away that the TTArtisans image was far and away sharper with good contrast. It was not even close.

in terms of optical quality (especially in landscape photography) which do you think is better: the TT Artisan MF 25mm or the AF 27mm that you review in this very interesting video? Thank you, Alberto from Italy
Hard one, if you’re shooting f8, for landscape, I would think they are very similar. Wide open the 25 mm has field curvature, which is not ideal for landscape.
I have a tiny TTArtisan 32 F2.8 full frame lens for my Nikon Z7 for $100, I was shocked that this lens is so sharp, not just in the centre, but right to the corners, wide open. The only downside is lens flare against light sources, which is quite severe. I actually like the slightly lower contrast of these cheap lenses, because I think modern lenses are too contrasty, especially in bright sunny day, which leads to blown highlights and dead shadows, these lenses produce images which look more natural to me, and also give me more headroom shall I need to do post-processing.
I just snagged my first camera from OfferUp, Sony a6100 w/ kit lens for $300 US! Steal! Because I got such a great deal I'm looking at alternatives to the Kit lens. Thanks for putting this ttartisan lens on my radar! I would love to see a comparison of this lens to a big brand pancake lens, specifically the Sony 20mm pancake lens. Have you experience with that lens? It would be great to hear your thoughts because one can justify getting the Sony pancake on the used market as I've seen them around $200 US. Thanks for making a great a video!
The rear lens cap has design flaws. The pin broke easily. Managed to exchange another new set from the dealer but the same problem happened. Besides that it is a very good lens! The optical performance is good. Best paired with my ZVE10. The autofocus performance is good in video mode.
Thank you Mark for this review. I just bought it at TTArtisan direct $133 free shipping. For my APS-C Sony that should come out to about 40mm. I have heard that a lot of movies are shot on 40mm focal length.
@@markwiemels Thank you for your response. I have an FX30 that I have not used yet. I am waiting for my 50mm T1.05 APS-C MF Cine Lens for E, $344 and my 25mm T1.05 APS-C MF Cine Lens for E $439. I have four other lenses from either 7Artasan or TTArtisans. This camera will be a learning experience. I used and kind of grew up on 355mm film cameras and manual has never scared me. I also enjoyed your video about vintage lenses. My first camera was a Canon AE-1 in 1979. I bought a 100-300mm Canon zoom leans which was $360 in 1979, f5.6. It's about 12" long. I have two other cameras, one being a Nikon.
On Fujifilm there is an option to buy a used XF 27mm f/2.8 lens for a few more dollars. That is much-much better option, especially the lens coating is far more advanced. I was curious about the TTArtisan version because the XF 27mm f/2.8 (Mark I) doesn't offer an aperture ring, but the flare resistance is horrible (or non exists at all). I really love lens flare as a creative option but the TTArtisan gives an ugly flare that reminds me a dirty phone camera. I hope they are working on a Mark II version with better front element coating.
The quality of products coming out of China has improved drastically over the last 15 years. (In part due to corporate espionage it should be said.) I first noticed this with Fender and Squire guitars built in China. You can buy an excellent electric guitar made in China for $450. That wasn’t the case in the early 2000s. I own the Viltrox 75mm f/1.2. Aside from the minimum focusing distance, which is a bit crap, everything else about the lens is on par with the Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2. There are some complaints about the sun stars and flaring with the Viltrox but for the price I think that can be overlooked for most users. I’ve never owned a TTArtisan lens but at $150 there’s almost no reason not to give it a try.
Agree. I mean on a scale of 1-10, it gets 5 bonus points for being cheap, small, and having autofocus. It’s actually one of my favourite lenses right now.
Maybe the most important specification on a lens the focal length is not mentioned until 7:49 seconds into this 9 minute video, interesting product nonetheless.
I hope they make one for the M50! I was looking for a cheaper alternative for the sigma 16mm and found your video yesterday. I've since binged through a bunch of others lol. Your in depth but simple way of explaining is extremely helpful! I actually bought the sigma 16mm alt you suggested from this same company. I'm an artist/designer by trade and like.. everyone is adding chromatic ab/lense effects in post! To get that subtly in camera is pretty neat I look forward to more from this company. Thank you for being awesome at explaining!
This is 27mm f2.8, I'm not sure it's a cheaper alternative to the Sigma 16mm f1.4. Canon's own 22mm f/2 would be closer than this lens. If this lens was 16mm even at f2.8 I'd buy it.
@@GrantMcWilliams Oh I think my comment was unclear there's another video of Mark's where he talks about a 17mm f1.4 (or close to this can't remember exact specs) from the same company that I'm referring to. I hope they make one of these 27mm for canon as well I'm in the beginner low budget phase and I like what this manufacturer is doing. I'm literally waiting impatiently for my 17mm to arrive now cannot wait to play!
@@thestellarelite Yes, I think they have a 17 mm f1.4 manual focus for EF-M but I'd like to have an AF version. The painful reality is all lens manufacturers are going to dump EF-M now that the mount is dead. I really wanted Sigma's short zoom that just came out for Fuji and Sony. If I had that I would probably just keep using my M6II until it finally died but currently I don't have what I want.
@@GrantMcWilliams I've now tested it out and it does exactly what I wanted which was more DoF background blur for my videos without spending $800+. Great little lens nice build. The manual focus is difficult took a lot of testing but I managed. When you say the mount is dead do you mean it's just too old and no one is developing for it anymore?
@@thestellarelite Not too old, just abandoned. I was hoping third parties would jump in and release some lenses for the EF-M market as soon as Canon abandoned it but I'm fairly sure at this point that that will not happen. Even third parties want nothing to do with it since new cameras aren't being built. Since there are no new cameras the market will shrink as people move on or cameras die and nobody wants to be producing products for a market that only has one way to go. It's very sad for me because Canon can't make an M6II replacement because the lenses will always be much larger. Maybe they could get close with a camera body with RF mount but not an RF lens. Fuji could do it but they spend a lot of time just making weird cameras that don't seem to have any direction (WTH do I care about an LCD showing the label from a film box from the 80's?). Sony does make a camera that fits into the M6II market and the lenses are small but I've had enough Sony's to know that isn't the direction I want to go. So, I wait and keep using my EF-M cameras. I would really like to have a fast, short zoom though. If I had that I'd keep it for the foreseeable future.
I bought this one in Thailand for 70$ (second hand) and I am really enjoy this with my X-E3. Good choice, especially compare with Fujinon 27mm ver.2 (300$)
I would have got this but had bought the Fuji 27mmf2.8(used) the week before this was announced. I honestly just love this focal length, it is so much like your eye.
Big question...you and other reviewers mention that the 28mm would be a 35-40ish equivalent in full frame, but it IS aps-c, so...whats up with that? I do understand the difference between APS-C and FF, but it would still behave like a 28 for the APS-C, correct? I ask this because currently, I'm using the F mount AF-S DX 35mm 1.8 with adapter, but wanted to buy a wider focal length. The 35mm is 35mm in my Nikon Z fc, so this TTArtisan would be a 28mm as well...right?? Sorry if the question is dumb but I'm getting quite confused with how you explain it, and if it's going to produce images with a similar focal length to my AF-S DX 35mm, then there's no point in getting it...right? Correct me if I'm wrong, please 😵💫
The 28mm will be 28mm, your 35mm is 35mm. The sensor of a full frame camera captures a wider image, but when someone says the it's a 28mm ASP-C lens that does not mean they have done any calculation for the crop factor. For example a 28mm FF lens and 28mm APS-C lens, will have the same FOV on your camera.
You had me until the street light flares... too much for me... By the way, is the focus ring "by wire" or mechanical? I like to use MF for video and hate the focus by wire feeling with no limits...
Hi, new subscriber here. My Mrs just bought the ZV e10 and I’m in need of your advice on what lens to get on a budget for travel flogging and podcasting.
Waiting for mine to arrive. Hope it won't take a month. Too bad it's not as thin as Fujifilm's similar 28mm f/2.8, but it's nice that we have that as an option for Sony now, too.
This is a lens for everyone using APS-C cameras. If you’re a Fuji owner, I think it’s a lens you just have to pick up. When compared directly to the Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8, I found this lens to be better overall, sans weather sealing. If this lens had weather sealing, then I would honestly see no reason to own the Fuji version. I personally didn’t like that lens because of the significantly higher amount of focus breathing and seemingly shorter minimum focusing distance. I know that on paper they claim they’re the same, but I always had trouble taking photos of things in my hands on the Fuji lens and I never had a problem with this lens. Great video. You’re extremely well spoken and articulate.
Thanks, there are my sentiments on the lens as well. It’s might be my “lens of the year” this year. I just don’t see how you can beat it for the price.
4:10 so You cannot change the contrast later?😎 For me there is better lower contrast I can increase later (especially in only certain areas of the photo) than too high contrast I cannot decrease. But I don't know about You...😁
I was thinking of getting this one for my Fuji X-T3 for a while now. I do own a manual 25mm 1.8 from 7Artisans but sometimes having autofocus is a good QoL. I was also thinking of maybe gettin the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 for Fuji X Mount, I wonder if you've had a chance to use that lens and what's your opinion on it since it's around 500-600 dollars.
As Alternative, can you XC 35mm f/2 from Fujifilm trying. It has the same optic as Fujinon XF 35mm f/2, but in plastic body and even cheaper than this 27mm
@@markwiemels no problem happy to help. I found out the hard way when I first got mine. luckily, if you try to update it a second time on a Windows machine, it will fix the lens make it usable again.
An affordable pancake. Thanks for highlighting it. If I'm honest I quite like the lens flare for video and I'm not opposed to a little bit of vignetting. At £169.00 you can't grumble for the price.
4:34 China is actually really good at making optics, if yours is bad it's normally either the company designed it that way or they didn't pay for the good stuff.
I was telling others when there are more than 3 auto focus lens manufacturers in China... competition within China will drive down lens price for all brands... and it has just arrived...
The flares around the street light were amazing, best flares ever. I think it adds to the experience and does not take away. The overdone too high contrast of modern lenses and the over-sharpening is a huge turn-off for me. In the beginning I was amazed to have such high contrast and ultra-sharpness As the novelty wore off I'm more than annoyed by the fake over-photoshopped look the new lenses with the newest sensors are prone to give. In best case the shots look like flattened oil paintings, and worse cases appear as overdone AI creations that never saw the light of the day. No wonder AI photography has started scoring points as occasionally more believable than modern sensor/lens shots.
So, did you... did you neglect to mention any details of the lens, or the fact that it's APSC? I searched for 'best full-frame pancake lens for Sony' and this video was one of the top results, so... hey, thanks heaps for muddying the search results. Get that downvote! "I mean it's not just the corners. It even creeps into the top of the frame. There is a quite a strong vignette." ...were you using a full-frame camera, by any chance? Nice to see Melbourne in the spotlight though, I guess.
Which version do you have? Fuji or Sony? What camera body do you use it with? I just bought this lens (for $122) for the Sony a6100 and I also bought the Samyang 35mm 1.8 (for $241) and not sure if I need both.
Lol so someone please confirm i'm crazy but not once in this whole review did Mark mention the lens manufacturer or focal length? I mean I saw it on screen but it was never mentioned right? 🙃😂
Correct. The details are on the lens close ups, and in the links. I actually had audio issues, shot the entire video 3 times, by the end of it I couldn’t remember what I said, in what take, and just couldn’t bring myself shoot the video a 4th time. So it got published.
Yah, that’s going to be my main use. I actually prefer this focal length, over the traditional 23mm for aps-c cameras. Plus it’s small, dirt cheap, and has a bit a character.
@@markwiemels Not dirt cheap in my country standards, but still much cheaper than anything else AF for Sony E. I'm tempted to get it, but got 24 F2.8 and 30 F1.4 for my Sony APS-C so a little bit redundant :D.
It looks like my old Sigma 32.8 EX DN, whose price I think was similar or cheaper. But of course, that was ten or eleven years ago. Would be nice to test this one on my NEX-6
Thanks for the review. Love your channel! I'm confused by the claim that this lens is suitable for both full-frame and APC-C on the Sony E-Mount. If it's designed for APS-C at 27mm then it will not work on full frame because it would show really severe vegetating. Sorry, I think you cover this... honestly, I haven't watched this video yet because I found it late at night. I'll watch it tomorrow.
@@markwiemels Yes. I understand that, but both the Amazon description and their official website claim that it is designed for both APS-C and full-frame Sony cameras. For brevity, I will just repeat the Amazon title, "TTArtisan AF 27mm F2.8 Auto Focus Lens APS-C Full-Frame Large-Aperture Wide Angle Lens for Sony E-Mount Cameras A6500 A6300 A6100 A9 A7RⅣ A7RⅢ A7Ⅲ A7RⅡ A7Ⅱ A7S A7R". I'd love to try this lens out on my Sony A7R II, but it's almost certainly going to show severe vignetting (vegetating??) Where did that spell-check mistake come from? LOL It would make more sense if the lens was designed for full-frame at 27mm and works as a 40mm on APS-C. That, I could understand. It's just not possible to go the other direction... APS-C -> full-frame. Life was so much easier before I upgraded to a full-frame digital camera. LOL I contacted the manufacturer about their confusing claim.
@sssdeecee I do believe you're overthinking it a bit dude lol. ALL APS-C lenses can work full frame as long as it's the the same mount. Should you use them on your full frame is a totally different question entirely. With the extra power a full frame has, why settle for an APS-C lens when you can get something designed to take advantage of the better sensors?
Just tested it, you get almost a full image circle, like a circular fish eye. Would still be nice on a high megapixel sensor in crop mode, or maybe post cropping a square image from a full frame shot.

@@mhammer5 sounds really good! Enjoy the experience. I love my FX30, it's my main RUclips Camera.,
@@markwiemels Thank you for your help.
Great video, thanks Mark. OK, I get it's less at 28mm than the Sigma 30mm, but how do they compare, given that they're similarly priced?
This lens should be over $100 less than the Sigma. If there were the same price, and the slightly bigger size did not matter, I would buy the Sigma.
@@markwiemels thought so...curiously Amazon Spain has the Sigma cheaper - €330 vs €375
@@WOTBoxTV that seems high for this little lens, I would search elsewhere.
Hi! Will you make a review on their latest 35mm f/1.8 autofocus lens?
Yea, I have one on the way.
Did you actively try to not mention the name of the lens manufacturer during this video? 😏
Me too. what,s the use? Should we use a mind weld?
I just screenshot the scene and the link. Then create a note with those and conduct my own research.
I guess it's a marketing trick trying to get people to go to his site. I find it incredibly annoying.
Well, the name of the maker is on the front ring of the lens 😎
@@ericj.w.ruijssenaars3421Thanks. I'll take that "informative contribution" as confirmation that it wasn't actually mentioned. 😏
Can this lens go on a Canon EOS T5?
Excellent video! Am just loving your presentation style :)
Thanks, I’m working on a video comparing the 3 - 27mm lenses for X mount now. I suspect that’s what you’re researching.
has anyone compared this lens to the sony 20mm pancake lens?
Maybe the most important specification on a lens the focal length is not mentioned until 7:49 seconds into this 9 minute video, interesting product nonetheless.
Yeh, I made a mess of that.
it would be beneficial to demonstrate how this lens looks on a small fuji camera like XT20 or XT30.....
Last weekend I got my first ttartisan lense, 25 2.0, game changer with the cheap m50!
I bought this one in Thailand for 70$ (second hand) and I am really enjoy this with my X-E3. Good choice, especially compare with Fujinon 27mm ver.2 (300$)
all of the video examples look REALLY fantastic
Thanks.
Why don’t they do it for m4/3? Would solve the vignette problem for one thing
I see Melbourne Central there and even Laksa King.
Yep! It’s all there!
Notice that too 😅
I would have got this but had bought the Fuji 27mmf2.8(used) the week before this was announced. I honestly just love this focal length, it is so much like your eye.
Agree. I'm working on a video comparing the Fuji 27, the Viltrox 27, and the TTArtisans 27. The small size of the Fuji 27mm is really cool.
I'm loving the Melbourne shots :) Bringing so much memories. Is there any shops in Melbourne that sells it ?
Just Amazon, I think they are online sales only.
Great review!
(Canon users) it’s ok, you can rely get a ef 24mm 2.8 apsc for $125
or an EF 50 1.8 for 100 U.S. Bones.
For example a 28mm FF lens and 28mm APS-C lens, will have the same FOV on your camera.
what is the best anamorphic lens for the Canon M50?
Probably the SIRUI 35mm f1.8. It would be my pick anyways.
On a budget, I would stick with the it lens. You could also get the Viltrox 13mm, and use that for low light, and use the kit lens for normal light.
Thank you.
It has character! woww like vintage hah? amazing
Waiting for mine to arrive. Hope it won't take a month.
Too bad it's not as thin as Fujifilm's similar 28mm f/2.8, but it's nice that we have that as an option for Sony now, too.
I had the Fuji lens in the past, I don’t now, so can’t compare directly, but it has to be close. If it is any bigger, it won’t be by much.
"27mm" f/2.8
Why you don’t mention about the mount? Is it for Z mount??
Yep, for Z, E, and X.
I’ve liked what I have gotten out of mine. Its very contrasty and saturated and vignette-y in a way I like.
Great little lens, Mark. Nice stuff :)
It’s really impressive, at the price point, it has me excited about where TT is going with their lenses.
But I don't know about You...😁
I like seeing Melbourne highlighted in your video. Can't dsay Ill get it, as I've the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 on my Sony, but interesting nevertheless!
Shame they don't make it for F mount, I'd love to try it.
I have not tested the 18-50, but my understanding is that it is very good.
As Alternative, can you XC 35mm f/2 from Fujifilm trying. It has the same optic as Fujinon XF 35mm f/2, but in plastic body and even cheaper than this 27mm
Interested to see how it performs with full-frame camera🤔
If it vignette at APS-C I would not even test it on FF.
FYI the firmware can only be updated using Windows. If you use macOS it becomes unusable
Thanks for the tip!
Yeah, I don’t mind the flares either.
4:34 China is actually really good at making optics, if yours is bad it's normally either the company designed it that way or they didn't pay for the good stuff.
Thanks for closing the door. My OCD was kicking in.
haha.. I only did it because of the change in composition with this lens... it may come back.
I would have thought your ocd would make you frustrated that there's a pot plant in front of the door!
That’s always bugged my OCD too 😂
This give me vibes of my 24mm and 40mm Canon pancakes :)
My mint mint Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM was $92 + shipping on eBay.
I was telling others when there are more than 3 auto focus lens manufacturers in China... competition within China will drive down lens price for all brands... and it has just arrived...
I just bought one new on Amazon during Amazon Prime day for 103 bucks shipped. Insane.
sweet, worth a try for a A7c :)
I have used it on the A7IV and love it.
What is the point of this lens if most people have better kit lenses already tho?
I hope someone makes cheap full frame AF lenses
So, did you... did you neglect to mention any details of the lens, or the fact that it's APSC? I searched for 'best full-frame pancake lens for Sony' and this video was one of the top results, so... hey, thanks heaps for muddying the search results. Get that downvote!
"I mean it's not just the corners. It even creeps into the top of the frame. There is a quite a strong vignette." ...were you using a full-frame camera, by any chance?
Nice to see Melbourne in the spotlight though, I guess.
I have this lens, and it is excellent. Really excellent. I see it out there for $128 - that's a bargain.
Why its cheapest AF lens if its cost more than last Canon 50 1.8 STM EF?
No EOS-M :((
I know, it would be prefect.
Does anybody make anything for canon except printer cartridges‽
Hugh Grant? Is that you? Didn‘t know you‘re into photography 😂
A L-Mount version would be great!
I hope we see that!
Kinda interesting offering. Seems really nice choice for street photography ....
Odd that Canon sells far more SLRs than any of the others but they do not make a Canon mount.
It looks like my old Sigma 32.8 EX DN, whose price I think was similar or cheaper. But of course, that was ten or eleven years ago.
Would be nice to test this one on my NEX-6
2:14 oh yes the brute force method of getting the viewers attention somewhere.
It's an APS-C Lens.
LOL
It would make more sense if the lens was designed for full-frame at 27mm and works as a 40mm on APS-C. That, I could understand. It's just not possible to go the other direction... APS-C -> full-frame. Life was so much easier before I upgraded to a full-frame digital camera. LOL
I contacted the manufacturer about their confusing claim.
I will test it and come back to you.
Just tested it, you get almost a full image circle, like a circular fish eye. Would still be nice on a high megapixel sensor in crop mode, or maybe post cropping a square image from a full frame shot.
Canon ef-m 🙏🙏🙏
😢 We can only hope…
@@atlasbesikniyo8753 I’m going to approach the company and see if I can talk with someone about it.
Firmware update process is ridiculous. Can only be done with Windows 10 and requires downloading WinRAR app.
