The autofocus on my copy is reliable, and the sound is buzzy and noticeable in the audio, but nothing like the horrible noise that yours is producing, it’s actually a totally different noise. I wonder if it’s a quality control issue, or firmware or something.

Great review, thank you. A 40mm full frame equivalent is of real interest to many, and being a pancake design is awesome. I have the super sharp Kamlan 28mm f1.4 (but its too heavy at 384 grams and I am selling it). If auto focus performance is challenging, then the TTartisan might not be a good choice for fast moving street photography. However, if your subject allows you time to adjust focus then no problem. Having an aperature ring is always a plus. This could be a great backpacking option as the lens is light and compact. The angle of view is useful for landscape and campground shots.
I have this on a Fuji XT30 and it works great with the latest firmware. Focusing is fast and reliable. It definitely flares but you can see it in the viewfinder and recompose in order to eliminate it easily enough. Sometimes if you just change the angle of the shot a little bit that does the trick. The vignette is evident wide open but easy to remove in post if it doesn't suit. Apart from that the picture quality is good and it is definitely worth the price.
A minor point but my number 2.8 has the merest hint of blue paint and the red A is a little feint tbh. I quite like the 'characterful' vintage style vignette and swirly bokeh, but I really love that it's a small prime lens that's ideal for travel photography.
I've been waiting for a review on this lens. Just wish they fix the ghosting which is on all their lenses and maybe update the AF. I'm really disappointed with Sony for still not releasing a compact quality 23mm F2 (35mm FF equivalent) or 18mm F2 (28mm FF equivalent) for APS-C that rival the size and performance from the Leica CL and Fuji. We need more quality pancakes for Sony APS-C badly. Id even be happy with an update of the Sony 20mm 2.8. I hate how the current version renders, it's about time for some APS-C lenses Sony, come on.
I do have to say that the TTArtisan lenses (some of them) are quite impressive for what you pay for them. I have one of their manual focus 7.5mm fisheyes which isn't bad at all considering it too was $150 and works with the new NIkon Z cameras. Yes it's not the sharpest out there and has to be stepped down a bit, but for $150 to play around with a fisheye is dirt cheap. Even the next best thing from say Laowa is about $450. But the fact that they made a halfway decent 27mm auto focusing lens for $150 is a good deal, and I might get one along with an a6000 for a cheap street camera setup (so I can leave my expensive FF cameras at home). I actually had thought about getting an a6000 anyway just to play with some of the E-mount lenses that are out there from various mfrs, even though Nikon is my primary brand of choice (and what my camera kit is), but there aren't nearly as many lenses for Nikon in general as there are for the Sony E mount...
You can get a black Nikon Zfc, and put a TTA 27/2.8 AF onto it...there's a Z-mount version, also with matching silver aperture ring... E-Mount users: Update the lens firmware to latest 2.0.2 ! X-Mount version is (still) at 1.1.1 level.
I want to see next a 23mm f/1.8 AF and small, similar to the new Nikkor 24 f/1.7. Please. And if it has also an aperture ring...many of us will be all over it!
How does the image quality compare to the other Sony APS-C pancake lenses? Of course not as sharp as the sigma but what about the Sony 20 f2.8 or the Sony 16 f2.8. I’m looking for a compact setup for travel and want something with better image sharpness than either of those or the kit lens. Is this the lens for me?
I can tell you with absolute certainty that this lens is sharper than both the Sony 16mm (which is garbage) and the Sony 20mm (which is slightly better garbage).
Always like watching your vids on gear I'm looking to buy because I see so many familiar places. Really need to get back out to Enchanted Rock/Fredricksburg. Been a while and really great area.
@KaioshinAemi I’d imagine your 28mm, f2, Sony would be better at autofocusing then this lens, which seems loud, slow, and inaccurate from time to time.
Im not camera savvy at all soooo....Ques: would I have more, and less expensive, f2.8 options if I went to an A-mount lens on my newly acquired NEX 5t? I currently have the 3.5f kit lens, but my indoor shots are always dark. (I don't have $500 for the Sigma f2.8 18/50 E-mount lens).
the only thing i dislike about this lens is how loud is the autofocus. I mainly use the lens for filming and you can hear the it focusing. other than that its a very good lens.
I got the viltrox 23mm on sale it’s been my go to on my a6400 for whatever I’m doing photography. This one looks cheap, I’d buy into it if I was just starting out.
This is actually fashioned after the Fuji 27mm 2.8. While that performs slightly better all around, it's also metal and a smidge thinner. Not worth the $400, personally, but Fuji is the poor man's Leica when it came to their prices. I'd just look for a used Fuji copy. Now, TT doing this has ushered in at least one other pancake lens for Nikon Z and Sony E. It is so hard to find a pancake lens with even decent optics and somewhat fast aperture. I have a TTartisan 35mm 1.2 manual all metal lens that is on 90% on my Nex-6. It barely exceeds past the grip and so tiny. I could see myself using this for an AF replacement for the Sony. I may get the Fuji one for my Fuji if I decide I like this one enough.
May I add the Rokinon/Samyang 24mm 2.8 as a contender? I have the sigma 30mm 1.4 (Sharper and better quality for sure), but I love the look tha the Samyang gives on my Sony A6000. Plus It is a FF lens if you have both systems.
Love the vintage vibes on this lens. I hope TTArtisan eventually does something of a brighter long-standard, but one which leans into the vintage character.
