The difference between H.264 and ProRes is typically 10x. There's a reason Recorders usually use SSD's and not flash cards - they're fast enough for that high volume of data AND it gets the cost of media for all that data down to a far more reasonable level.
It’s a HUGE difference in file sizes - exponential in fact - BUT when you go from 24 mb/sec to 200+ mb/sec the upgrade in quality is also exponential. You’ll need to upgrade your capture and transfer infrastructure but if you value high quality video, sound, and faster workflow, an external recorder is well worth the investment. I am constantly amazed at the quality I get from my Atomos.
It's not about the size. I switched to DNx because I can edit it directly in Resolve, I don't even need to pull the files out of the Ninja's SSD. No transcoding required. It's a huge time-saver, and time is money. And then of course there's the consideration of image quality : it's like comparing a camera's JPEG to RAW files.
Another point. the batteries fujifilm x-t2/3 are used up fast when doing internal recording and overheating is real problem still in the 35-40c heat south-east asia. but when sending the video out to an external recorder like Ninja V, the camera overheating and battery strain problems are solved. I have done continues 45 minutes recording on Ninja V from a X-T2 and the camera battery only drained 15-20% (original fuji np-w126s) and did not get hot at all.. because all the heaveduty processing is done by Ninja V, not the camera as is the case for inbody recording. So Atomos recorders can make a real difference in what and where you can use your camera. btw. Ninja V ran 45 minutes recording in 4.2.2 8 bit DNxHD from fuji F-log UHD 24fps, on a small lightweight NP-F550 2200mha battery
Simple math: 1TB of XQD cards = 1TB SSD + Atomos Ninja V. The recorder pays for itself. Also, the Z6 filmmaker kit includes this and other accessories, great deal.
One thing that every Atomos product user should note is that they assume all input signal as legal range, but most cameras output full range. This often causes footage to look more contrasty(clipped) compared to in-camera footage, you need to manually do a range conversion in you editing tool (in Resolve, set input range to "full").
I am still not clear if this is a great product. It would have been nice if you could've mentioned if you like it or not... 😉 😂 Just bought one and I am very excited. Thanks for the video!
J Armellin That’s the cost of the “recorder” add the SSD, the SSD docking to download, the battery - two - and how will you attach it w/o a cage... and use it in a Gimbal and Slider? Is it worth over $1K YES!!!
@@TheGeoDaddy The recorder and a 500GB SSD just cost me 1138$CDN. It is quite a good chunk of money, but think about the Pro SD cards you will not have to buy (they are costly). Also, you may not need the Vertical Grip on the Fuji XT models (another 300-400$). On top of this, you will save time editing. What I really like is the ability to monitor your shot in the field. This saves you so much time afterwards. All in all, this is an investment on the long run.
I bought 2 of the original Ninja 1s, way back. I have been an Atomos fan boy ever since. I have two power stations a Ninja, a Samurai, and a Ninja V. One of the less celibratated features that is essential for me, is how easy ProRes is to edit. I don’t even have to transfer the files. I edit off the SSDs I captured to. So easy, so fast.
Hi, if you buy an Atomos Ninja V, which accessories do you need to buy to make it work? It’s a basic question but nobody online seems to talk about it precisely.
Work to do what? Externally record or use as a monitor? For a monitor nothing, for an external recorder a compatible ssd. And if you want to travel with it a Sony np series battery.
It isn't clear in the website either. Átomos $700 battery $160 SSD $350 for 1tb that makes a hell of an expense. I want a real review, how long would a battery last and so on.

Fellow Dad can you give me more info on the live stream on this bad boy?
This is perfect for non video pros. Pros want SDI. Like that SUMO! ;)
You can buy an expansion for SDI. 😉
Ah! I thought so - there’s an Atomos What’s Up Dock!!!
Good video, great delivery + 1
Will you review that cheap LCD for 38 bucks on eBay? How can I send you the link?
Maybe that can be something I’ll check out in the future 👍
YEAH! Good video - great information!
Makes home movies.....then buys an atomos ninja...lol Just giving you a hard time, love the content!
Believe me I get it.😉
Oh man, if I could afford one..lol.. outstanding video once again Sir.
Thanks so much! 😁👍
@@TheEverydayDad You Sir are very welcome. With the input from your videos, I made a few purchases that I wouldn't have, without the knowledge obtained from your content. Just starting out sucks but videos like yours helps a heap.
Will it work with the panasonic gh4?
Which camera should I buy Sony a6300 or the Nikon d7200?
If you're trying to do any sort of video, the a6300 hands down. I had the D7200 and it wasn't great for video, especially since you can't change your f stop while recording.
@@EricKolibas mostly for photography
@@amitk1187 the D7200 is really solid for photos then. The only reason I got rid of mine was because I started getting into recording video more and had thought to keep it for photos. You can get some great cheaper lenses for it too.
@@EricKolibas how is the d7500?
@@amitk1187 Can't comment on it personally as I haven't used it but I'd imagine it's better than the 7200. I had experienced super long battery life on mine for photos and having the screen up top was great. Wish the A7iii had that 😩
atomos ninja v is good working with sony 6500-6400 and what atomos ninja v give me to
For more pro movie making is the best for this price!
I totally agree!
I'd buy one just because u say so my man
Well dang I really appreciate that. I try to only recommend this best stuff out there that would absolutely help someone out 👍
Because of you, I have purchased an m50, yi camera's, gopros... so keep it coming
Well awesome I’m glad the content helps 😁
Hi, will it work in a sony A6300?
I have a canon m10 & m100, can I use it like the RX100 V?
Nevin Sanchez They don’t have clean HDMI output. Means you have icons on the video
Hey how you and blue doing
I can’t fly him much anymore but he’s still here hanging out with me 👍
Very cool Gary!
Thanks so much! 😁👍
I like your videos, but ironically, most everyday dads can't afford all those gears you're talking about.
I’ve seen everyday dads spend lots of money on crazy hobbies 🤷♂️
Ninja V crew please stand up👋🏿
Oh heck yes! 😁👍
Right on
