    I’d like to see a size comparison between the camera’s internal h.264 and the ninja’s prores files.

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  5 лет назад +2

      It’s a big difference, I’ll pin this so people see it but it’s substantially bigger.

    • @WildBikerBill
      @WildBikerBill 5 лет назад +2

      The difference between H.264 and ProRes is typically 10x. There's a reason Recorders usually use SSD's and not flash cards - they're fast enough for that high volume of data AND it gets the cost of media for all that data down to a far more reasonable level.

    • @RANDassociatesinc
      @RANDassociatesinc 5 лет назад +4

      It’s a HUGE difference in file sizes - exponential in fact - BUT when you go from 24 mb/sec to 200+ mb/sec the upgrade in quality is also exponential. You’ll need to upgrade your capture and transfer infrastructure but if you value high quality video, sound, and faster workflow, an external recorder is well worth the investment. I am constantly amazed at the quality I get from my Atomos.

    • @TheNefastor
      @TheNefastor 4 года назад

      It's not about the size. I switched to DNx because I can edit it directly in Resolve, I don't even need to pull the files out of the Ninja's SSD. No transcoding required. It's a huge time-saver, and time is money. And then of course there's the consideration of image quality : it's like comparing a camera's JPEG to RAW files.

    • @LatexFashionTV
      @LatexFashionTV 3 года назад

      The H265 update brings the file size down considerably.

    Another point. the batteries fujifilm x-t2/3 are used up fast when doing internal recording and overheating is real problem still in the 35-40c heat south-east asia. but when sending the video out to an external recorder like Ninja V, the camera overheating and battery strain problems are solved. I have done continues 45 minutes recording on Ninja V from a X-T2 and the camera battery only drained 15-20% (original fuji np-w126s) and did not get hot at all.. because all the heaveduty processing is done by Ninja V, not the camera as is the case for inbody recording. So Atomos recorders can make a real difference in what and where you can use your camera. btw. Ninja V ran 45 minutes recording in 4.2.2 8 bit DNxHD from fuji F-log UHD 24fps, on a small lightweight NP-F550 2200mha battery

    Simple math: 1TB of XQD cards = 1TB SSD + Atomos Ninja V.
    The recorder pays for itself.
    Also, the Z6 filmmaker kit includes this and other accessories, great deal.

  • @wendriftwood1952
    @wendriftwood1952 5 лет назад

    One thing that every Atomos product user should note is that they assume all input signal as legal range, but most cameras output full range. This often causes footage to look more contrasty(clipped) compared to in-camera footage, you need to manually do a range conversion in you editing tool (in Resolve, set input range to "full").

      J Armellin That’s the cost of the “recorder” add the SSD, the SSD docking to download, the battery - two - and how will you attach it w/o a cage... and use it in a Gimbal and Slider? Is it worth over $1K YES!!!

    • @ginatinyverge9661
      @ginatinyverge9661 5 лет назад

      @@TheGeoDaddy The recorder and a 500GB SSD just cost me 1138$CDN. It is quite a good chunk of money, but think about the Pro SD cards you will not have to buy (they are costly). Also, you may not need the Vertical Grip on the Fuji XT models (another 300-400$). On top of this, you will save time editing. What I really like is the ability to monitor your shot in the field. This saves you so much time afterwards. All in all, this is an investment on the long run.

    I bought 2 of the original Ninja 1s, way back. I have been an Atomos fan boy ever since. I have two power stations a Ninja, a Samurai, and a Ninja V. One of the less celibratated features that is essential for me, is how easy ProRes is to edit. I don’t even have to transfer the files. I edit off the SSDs I captured to. So easy, so fast.

    Thx for your detailed view on this one, as a beginner starting from 0 (actually didn't even begin yet ^^ ), I think I won't invest in this ext rec, yet now I know better how useful it will be when I get my hands on it!
    I was wondering how could I rec on SSD instead of SD, as they're cheaper, + performant, + durable & reliable, have + storage in 1 drive... & except cameras like the BMCC, there was no way to do it on regular mirrorless, which is a shame to me, as it is utterly possible to allow it through USB C 3.1, that they could implement...
    Whatever, here we have another complete solution, with additional benefits as 4K 10bits 4:2:2 rec, never possible in body.

    But its a monitor. I'd heard line like this before and I didn't get it.
    As a 3D animation student I'm sounding like a dumb silly guy but someone explain this to me.
    Can a monitor add extra recording functionality in camera?
    Edit: I watched further. Yes it does provide extra functionality like codecs etc. but how? Does it have processor and ram powerful enough to process hd, uhd footage?

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  5 лет назад +1

      Some cameras can send the 10bit 422 through HDMI but cannot record it internally. Look at the Nikon Z6, GH5, or Canon EOS R for example.

    I have the 7" Atomos Shogun Inferno monitor/recorder. I love it except for one thing, outdoor daylight visibility. It sucks! I had SUCH HIGH HOPES of being able see it well in sunlight. The specs say it's possible. Reviewers say it's possible. Not me - I still see more reflections than actual digital display. That frustrates me to no end. Being a wearer of glasses, I find it very difficult to use a viewfinder. The EVF on my Panasonic AG-UX180 video camera is pretty darn good, but still tough for using glasses. I was hoping the monitor would be my viewing savior. Not so much. If anyone here has helpful comments, I'd love to hear. Is there a glare-free covering that I can put on the monitor? Can the brightness and contrast be tweaked for daylight viewing? NOTE: I have the official Atomos monitor sun shade, but even that is not a cure. If I leave off the external rear panel with the reduced viewing window, I still get too much glare on the screen. If I use that panel, I may as well be using an EVF again because I need to have my face plastered to it. Argh!

    Which camera should I buy Sony a6300 or the Nikon d7200?

    • @EricKolibas
      @EricKolibas 5 лет назад

      If you're trying to do any sort of video, the a6300 hands down. I had the D7200 and it wasn't great for video, especially since you can't change your f stop while recording.

      @@amitk1187 the D7200 is really solid for photos then. The only reason I got rid of mine was because I started getting into recording video more and had thought to keep it for photos. You can get some great cheaper lenses for it too.

      @EricKolibas 5 лет назад

      @@amitk1187 Can't comment on it personally as I haven't used it but I'd imagine it's better than the 7200. I had experienced super long battery life on mine for photos and having the screen up top was great. Wish the A7iii had that 😩
