The Tragedy of The Knights of Ren

  • It's fairly popular these days to beat down on the Disney Star Wars sequels... and that's for good reason.
Among the many missed opportunities from these movies, we find the Knights of Ren.
Kylo Ren's elite squad of powerful warriors that we see only briefly throughout the films, until their eventual demise in Episode 9.
Episodes 7 through 9 are lacking compelling villains beyond Kylo Ren, and it would have been great to get to know antagonists that we could see go back and forth with Rey and the rest of her rebel crew.
Perhaps with some of them maybe turning back to the light or dying tragically... or even just at least being an in-between challenge for Rey to help show her growth as a Jedi, or even challenges for Finn or Poe.
But no, they get no dialogue, are basically window dressing for scenes, and only ultimately exist to expand a Kylo Ren action figure set.
There's actually some interesting lore to Ren and the predecessors of the name and lightsaber, but we never got any of that even hinted at in the films. Instead we got... well, what we got in the sequels.
The angle of Ren and the philosophy of The Ren in comparison to the order of the Sith is a pretty interesting idea, and again, considering that Ben Solo took the mantle of Kylo Ren while still not taking the lightsaber The Ren... could have all been interesting to see and would have been more interesting than “somehow, Palpatine returned.”
It's an interesting direction to take to expand the Dark Side and the ways to become corrupted by it.
Instead of villains like that, we get rushed high stakes villain Palpatine, Palpatine's gloried bath robe puppet and... Hux.
And Captain Phasma, I guess... but damn she could get her own video-- there's another huge missed opportunity of a character right there.
The worst part about this is that unlike a lot of Star Wars where more shallow parts can be effectively explained and expanded on through spin-off media, I wouldn't want them to elaborate more on who the Knights of Ren were.

If they ran with the idea of Kylo Ren actually wanting to destroy the Sith and create a newer Order that's more based on the logic of Ren, I think it would have made the sequel trilogy way more interesting and Kylo Ren a much more interesting character. But instead, they just bailed and rushed the films scripts so much that it's all trash.

They are dark side force users. Why wouldn't Ren or Kylo Ren show then the ways of the saber? Instead they have their own weapons... Which are fine, but I think we'd all prefer if they were using red sabers.
And again, with no time for character development, we know nothing about their former identities without needing to look up their lore.

George Lucas, JJ & Disney really screwed up; Luke could of showed up, fought off the Knights of Wren in The Force Awakens. A huge battle that brings Luke back on screen like the end of Disney's The Mandorean. In my sequel trilogy, the Knights of Ren are new group force users created by Lord Ren. Lord Ren believes that common non-force sensitive beings are incapable governing themselves that Force-users are supreme beings destine to bring order to the galaxy. She combines the teachings of both Jedi and Sith put rejects the aspects that led to there downfall. She combine aspects of Darth Bane Rule of Two and Rule by the Strong. So every member of knight of ren must have a apprentice and to avoid power struggles she have code of honor in the Kaggath system. She also build a Cult of Personality around Darth Vader in order keep Knight of Ren in line by making them unit to accomplish Lord Vader goal of bringing order to the galaxy rather than petty squabbles.

Oh, that's a good point, JJ abrams could have had the knights as the primary antagonist in "last skywalker" instead of clumsily bringing back palpatine for a lore breakingly stupid plot point.
He could could have literally made the exact same movie with one of them filling the primary antagonist role and elude to things palpatine might have done before he died to fill in the blanks where needed. 🤔
I had a pretty low opinion of that movie b4, but this just really drives home the level of incompetence involved in the plots construction.
They resurrected an old antagonist even though they had several on hand, ready to take the reigns.
Its bad enough if you go in thinking that taking snoke off the board last movie put them in a bind, but when you realise that because the knights exist, it didn't really. That's next level bad.

@@src6339 Great comment, overall, too. The Knights as a series of antagonists would have been way more compelling to see get taken down than just having Palpatine return. But that would have required development from early on, and considering they basically just winged every script, we never got it. Instead we got characters with no dialogue that never ended up mattering.
