This is the Ninja Turtles I grew up with. This series stayed true to not only the comics, but the 80s TV show and the first movie. And I totally agree that this is the Batman the Animated Series of the TMNT universe.

I never liked how the 80s turtles fans are the ones who are the most vocal of the fanbase and are the ones who are mostly catered to when it comes to acknowledgement by the creators. There is some serious nostalgia bias that surrounds 80s turtles and I'm kind of irritated by it, I don't hear much response about the 2k3 series from either fans or the creators and it's a real shame because this series has the best quality when it comes to animation, story, and character interaction. This series sticks to its roots and makes a pretty faithful adaption from its source material. This is pretty much the closest thing we'll get to an anime adaption of the Mirage TMNT comics and knowing we may not be getting a high definition re-release of this series saddens me.

I was looking at the official TMNT Facebook page and about two weeks ago they posted a short video celebrating the 2003 series. There was comment after comment by people who wanted the series to get a complete Home release, and the official page said they've notified Nickelodeon of the demand for a release of the series and to "cross your three fingers". This doesn't mean a release is guaranteed but it does give us quite a glimmer of hope.

I kinda wonder if the reason why that series doesn't get much acknowledgement is probably because one of the co-creators of TMNT had a bit of a fallout with the other creator later on over creative differences and them both splitting. (I don't remember correctly so I might have to check this to be sure)

TMNT 2003 is the best and most accurate animated version of the ninja turtles. This show should be a reference point for all of the following reboots. Sadly, it isn't.
If you know ninja turtles since 2012 reboot only, go watch 2003 series, now!

It's a shame not many people talk about this show in general. This is the series I grew up with the most. The same way I grew up with Samurai Jack. This show had great action, voice acting and very good story. I do agree that they pretty much fucked up this series, ever since Fast Forward aired. I am getting tired to hear that kids can't handle darker and more mature cartoons. I was a kid, when I watched TMNT 2003 and I loved it dearly. Sucks, that you can't get good DVD's or even Blu-Ray editions of this series, without destroying your wallet. TMNT 2003 needs more love to be honest. As much as the 2012 series is good, it doesn't live up the same way as the 2003 series did. That forced romance especialy with April and Donnie always gets on my nerves. -_-

You can tell that the production team had so much passion for TMNT. They somehow adapted the Mirage comics into the TV Rating given to them by 4Kids. They also incorporated new things to the lore which even affected the Mirage comics (Hun and Bishop). To show how dedicated they are, one example is the Bishop fights. They drew and made over 500 pages of storyboarding on the fights.

The 2003 series was the best one in my opinion. The 80's series was okay but and the animation was lazy af and it relied on jokes too much. If was definitely tailored toward children. The 2003 series had excellent animation and the stories were written very well. While it did have some humor in it for the most part It had a dark tone like the original comics did which made it better if you ask me.

  • @kawaki4441
    @kawaki4441 3 года назад +8

When it comes to adaptation of comics, fans most often seek faithfulness to the source material.
2003 show did exactly that. It was heavily inspired by original Mirage Comics in which Turtles were dark, gritty, but this show still expressed their side as teenagers really well all while maintaining light heartedness of children's cartoon. Humor was excellent and subtle in many ways so it didn't overshadow overall tone of the series. It really has amazing story with incredible continuity. It slowly builds up the Shredder in first 9 episodes, all while foreshadowing Utroms and the fact that Shredder is one of them by utilising genetics lab in the first season. Tales of the underworld lays foundation for Y'Lyntias, Avians,
Merpeople. Show slowly showed us some hints for future storyline that most would overlook, only for viewers to be taken aback when those same hints lead to full blown episodes. Examples:
Shredder was showed with his stomach wraped in bandages, survives water tower being thrown on him and beheading - he later turns out to be an Utrom.
We see an outline of big crocodilian shadowy creature - several episodes later we are introduced to the Leatherhead.
Turtles are seen watching the news that establish that there are escalations between major gangs in New York - few episodes later City at War storyline starts.
Triceratons pull Beijing to the sky - 10 episodes later turtles team up with Karai to save the people and pull it back to Earth.
Great art style, design, animation and soundtrack - Turtles design was excellent. Lightning and rain in episodes such as Shredder Strikes Back was beautiful in addition to the show's soundtrack makes you really invested in every second of run time.
Characters and development, voice acting, settings and villains are top notch. Shredder having design, demonic voice and badass theme adds to presence said character has, even when he's only mentioned. Even if the show isn't perfect it really is close to being. I consider this Batman The Animated Series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Funny. I watched some of TMNT 2003 episodes when I was a 8 or 9 years old back in 2010 and I hated it, probably because it was too serious for me. After rewatching TMNT 2003 as an 18 years old adult, not gonna lie, I’m impressed. The 2003 show delivers great written, awesome episodes like Notes from the Underground, Shredder Strikes and Strikes Back, SAINW, Meet Casey Jones and others, anime-esque art style, top notch fight scenes and animation, great voice actors like Sam Rigel as Donnie, Michael as Leo, Scottie Ray as Shredder. I like how turtles have unique different green colors and their grip melee weapon matches to their cool color headbands. Too bad the show kinda dropped quality in season 5. Great video pal

The 2003 series is my favourite take on a TV version of the turtles, up until Fast Forward that is. I did enjoy it when I was a kid, but looking back, it's very weird. Back to the Sewer was weird, too. The Lost Episodes were good because they felt like the first 4 seasons.

I got into the franchise with rise about a year ago and after hearing so many good things about it I tried to go back and watch 2012 but the romantic subplots and general pacing out of plot points were both so infuriating I had to quit before I gave myself a brain aneurysm. That being said, going back to binge this one instead was a fantastic palette cleanse. This show does not get enough credit, goes hard asf.

To be honest they should have stopped at Season 5 with the Demon Shredder. But if they had to make a season 6 which was Fast Forward I think it would have been better if they went a space route. Maybe an intergalactic war with the Triceriton Republic and Utroms on one side and a new evil alien species on the other. Perhaps this is where they could have introduced Krang as a separate character from Chrell.

This is my personal favorite version of the TMNT and the one I first learned of the series from. The storytelling was great and a lot of the character development was so thrilling! I honestly have wanted to see this get a crossover with the 2012 TMNT but that seems like it will never happen =(
I do feel Fast Forward and Back to the Sewer were kinda lower quality... but Turtles Forever is a REALLY fun and great ending to the series. Yes the ‘80’s turtles may be a bit out of character, but they were still pretty funny and did their jobs well enough. Although I’m surprised you didn’t discuss Turtles Forever in this review.

Thank you for this. Many people suspect it was the episode "Insane in the Membrane" (season 4: episode 19, where Baxter Stockman "made" himself a biological body which almost IMMEDIATELY began to degrade and decay, making him into this maccabe/gruesome zombie-like character.) which caused 4Kids to freak out and force the show into a more "kid-friendly" territory...i.e. _TMNT: Fast Forward_ instead of INITIALLY airing season 5 (which they later FINALLY did as "The Lost Episodes.") I 100% agree with you that _Fast Forward_ was the end for me. I watched _a FEW_ episodes of _FF_ and decided this new kiddish tone wasn't for me. I didn't even bother watching _Back to the Sewers,_ (although my younger brother did). I came back for _Turtles Forever_ and *LOVED* it (though I *REALLY* wish they would have used the character designs from the first 5 seasons of the 2003 series *INSTEAD* of the _Fast Forward_ designs.
I am a long-time _TMNT_ fan. I was 4 years old when the 1986 series came out, and a 20 year old college student back when the 2003 series came out. The 2003 series is my *ALL TIME FAVORITE,* and to this *DAY* it remains *PEAK* _TMNT_ for me. I didn't like the 2012 series because it just felt like a tired retread of the 1987 series. It was basically "just" an updated version of the 1987 series with bad character designs and wonky looking CGI for The Turtles. I *HATE* that Peter Laird sold The Turtles to Nickelodeon. It was an...odd choice for someone who has previously been VERY vocal about his dislike of the "kiddification" and "watering down" of The Turtles. I REALLY wish he would have chosen a studio like Warner Bros, who almost certainly would have kept that original edgier feel to them, because WB actually does a good job with their ANIMATED DC universe. (Not so much the live-action). I ALSO really disliked how "fanfiction-y" everything felt in the 2012 series, as it seems like the writers were more concerned with pairing all the Turtles up with a romantic partner than actual character development. It...got old. 😒 And I found it REALLY gross how weirdly _pervy_ they made Donnie. A strange choice. He was CONSTANTLY being a creeper towards April. Not that April was any better, as she was always purposefully leading him on. The dynamic was absolutely _disgusting_ and I HATED this version of April _and_ Donatello.
_Rise of the TMNT_ gets a lot of hate, but AT LEAST it wasn't "just" a retread of the 1987 series. _Rise_ at least tried new things, just like the 2003 series did. It blended the original lore with the lore from the 1987 series in order to create something fresh and new. I grew to like this version of Splinter who wasn't "just" the usual kindly elderly sensei spouting wizened, stereotypic advice. I ESPECIALLY loved this new neuro-divergent Donnie. I have ADHD, and have been suspected of being on the spectrum (although I've never been _"officially"_ diagnosed for autism _specifically.)_ So it was nice seeing a character like Donnie be portrayed this way. I also really liked April's portrayal in _Rise;_ She felt like a surrogate sister to the Hamato clan, instead of just an "occasional" helping hand. The only thing I _wasn't_ a fan of in this series was Leo himself, who is normally my favorite character. I felt like he was... REALLY out of character, and kept waiting for them to offer up some explanation as to why this Leo was so different, but listening to the interviews it just feels like they wanted to do something besides "the leader" for him, because the writers claim they had a "hard time" writing 2012 Leo and didn't want to go through the trouble here. Not gonna lie...it was REALLY disappointing to hear this.

TY so much for commenting. I was 22 when the 2003 series dropped and the 80s series was my life blood. I'm glad you like this video I made a video essay on the 1st live action TMNT movie you might like that too.

    • @Piiiiiiiiit
      @Piiiiiiiiit 7 месяцев назад

Not to infodump my character analysis on main
      But…
Now, this is just my personal interpretation, so take it how u will. But I think the reason Leo is the way he is in Rise starts to make sense the more you look at his place in the family. He’s a middle child. Raph is the oldest in this version, so he was the one who naturally fell in to shoulder the burden of protection and leadership. Before now, we’ve only ever seen Leo when he himself is in that position, and I think Rise is a portrayal of what he’d be like without that burden placed on him immediately.
But this dynamic shift didn’t come without its consequences. We see early on that behind the facade he puts up Leo’s really insecure about his place on the team and doesn’t feel like he brings anything to the table (his comments in Minotaur Maze and Portal Jacked are prime examples) and these underlying feelings really aren’t helped by how quick the rest of his family is to write him off as incapable. But here’s the thing, he very clearly HAS strengths, they’re the same strengths that every other Leo has! It’s just that those strengths can’t be honed or fully realized within the role he’s occupying.
Like the Leo’s before him, he’s a great strategist, often subbing in for Raph when his plans fall through initially, or pointing out holes that he didn’t consider. He’s always the first to step up and motivate his siblings when they start to give up (see origami tsunami and many unhappy returns) He’s intuitive and perceptive, able to tell immediately that big mama wasn’t who she said she was in her introductory episode, and is constantly aware of his siblings’ strengths and weaknesses, to the point where he can predict what any of them would naturally do in a situation with frightening accuracy and uses it to his advantage when planning. (See the lair games episode where he uses his siblings resentment towards his winning streak to make them blindly gun for a prize they don’t even want just to take him down a peg, and carefully throwing the competition all so he can get out of having the worst room💀) Which brings me to the “face man” bit of his character, which adds on a bit of a manipulative side we haven’t seen from the character before. He’s really good at playing the room to get what he wants out of a situation even if it means playing into the fool most people take him for. Prime example of this being in Many Unhappy Returns where he manages to outplay big mama by basically acting like an arrogant tool in way over his head, getting him and splinter into a seemingly unwinnable challenge, only for him to turn around and pull everything he’d done up until that point into a strategy he’d had brewing in the background since the start and winning the day despite literally everyone, his brothers and splinter included, doubting his ability to do so.
Long and Short of it is, he’s got the bones of a good leader, but without the burden of responsibility that Raph took up for him he’s never had a reason to actually take stuff seriously, and in response, nobody really took him seriously either. This all comes to a head in the movie when that devil may care attitude almost gets Raph killed and damn near causes the apocalypse, and Leo basically speed runs in the span of a little over an hour the character development they had laid out for him to undergo over the course of at least another season bc the show got cancelled before they could actually get there with him😐
Anyway, in case you couldn’t tell I’m very passionate about this subject💀 I get if this doesn’t change ur mind on how they handled him in Rise, it’s def not for everybody, and I wish they did make these qualities just a bit more clear in him too. But I think a lot of people just look at him and take what he is at face value, when he’s got a lot more going on than they give him credit for. He’s definitely a different take, nobody will deny that, but beneath all the differences in my eyes he is still very much a Leo.

I remember this reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 and I really do like the character's design and personalites a lot better than the other reboots from 1985, 2013 and 2018. It's a shame they never made a proper complete series onto DVD with all the season1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 because that would keep the memories of the series alive with the next generation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , I know they already made a few DVDs from 2003 which is disappointment sadly and I can only watch them on RUclips as long as the episodes are still there😔.

I think that they didnt know what to do with Rapheal if he isnt angry, with Leo he had a little more to over come. Each TMNT series always make one or two of the turtles the center piece while they push some of the others to the side. the 87 show put Mike and Raph at the forefront and kind of pushed Leo to the back. The 2003 series might just be trying to do the opposite.

    • @Megumi_Bandicoot
      @Megumi_Bandicoot 6 лет назад +9

But even if that was what the show was aiming for, it was still a disappointment.
As much as I love the complex storylines in Season 4, watching Leonardo become the new angry turtle while shoving Raph to the side was just painful, and a huge middle finger to Raphael's character.

@I.Is.Sorry wouldn't neccesarily say he was a Gary Stu. He was the best because he trained more, and we see him get beaten down multiple times in the series. And when he was getting angrier, the others would call him out on it, Ralph even got in his face for it "Gonna have words about this attitude of yours lately"
The stu's are characters that don't have flaws and aren't beaten, Leo had plenty of flaws and lost a lot of fights, especially season 4.
Ralph suddenly becoming the more levelheaded was probably because he saw Leo was the hothead, so he needed to keep his head screwed on should something happen and Leo couldn't lead anymore.

When I was a child, the teenage mutant ninja turtles 2003 cartoon was one of the first TV shows I saw. I stumbled across it by accident playing around with my TV. When I saw it, I instantly fell in love with it. I had so many memories of it. I love this show for various reasons. I showed my friend a few episodes and he was very excited. I watched it with my mom and she was just as invested in it as I was. I watched it whenever it aired on TV regularly.
    Animation:
The animation was incredible. There was a high attention to detail in every season. I loved how beautiful the natural environment looked in places such as New York City.
    Tone:
I love how the teenage mutant ninja turtles 2003 cartoon knows how to be serious and humorous. When the show gets dark, it gets DARK! The teenage mutant ninja turtles 2003 cartoon is one of the darkest and most violent shows I've ever seen.
There's some very dark themes such as grief, death, trauma, family, guilt, the list goes on. I'm surprised the Teenage mutant ninja turtles 2003 cartoon got away with much of its content considering how violent it was. I was deeply disturbed by much of what I saw in the teenage mutant ninja turtles 2003 cartoon. It knew when to add mystery and when it did, it was disturbing.

I definitely agree with this being the best incarnation/generation of TMNT. I myself remember having two VHS-tapes containing a total of 7 episodes along with my brother. These episodes being Notes from The Underground part 1-3, The Shredder Strikes Back part 1-2 + The King and Tales of Leo. We basically only viewed 7 episodes of the show, yet they were all enough to get us both super obsessed with the show in a mere second! We also had our own collections of this show's merchandise, including action-figures of Raphael, Donatello, Master Splinter and Oroku Saki/The Shredder, plus a poker card game, TMNT-slime, a mini-flashlight in the form of a Leonardo miniature, and a comic book version of the episode Fallen Angel.
(I honestly have no intentions of bragging, though!)
This TMNT-incarnation has played such a huge part of my childhood, and I'm still loving it to this day!

I remember how hyped I was when they crossed over in that TV special. I wish companies made some decent figures. I see the pinned comment and it's unfair that the old movies and the 80's series get the most merchandise and love. Though I guess it was just a marketing machine built for just that. TMNT is just all-around great.

I remember first time seeing this show. At that time I had never liked the 87 Turtles becuse I thought it was silly. 2003 really spoke to me and appealed to the more serious story telling and great animation and having a awesome flavor with it´s art style and music. I do think the show is really funny too, they are not dark and gritty, it is serious and enjoyable. Where I live we got the show up to the ending of season 3 then they stopped airing so I tought that was the end of the show so I were really suprised to hear about the Cyberworld season. To bad it is not spoken of as much today. I think the show is awesome. TMNT 2012 toke some of the best elements of the 87 and 2003 and combined them into a proper show with great 3D animation for tv, but I think 2003 get on top and I can enjoy 87 turtles now with it´s silly humor and fun characters.

I grew up with the original 87 Turtles. My first exposure was the 87 Turtles. And I HATED the 87 Turtles. It's just so.... stupid. Well, ok those two things before aren't entirely true. I do remember seeing a few black and white Mirage Comics laying around when I was younger, so it was the first time I ever HEARD of the Ninja Turtles, but the '87 cartoon was the first time I saw the franchise everywhere as a massive hit and I just thought it was the dumbest, cheesiest, crappiest thing ever when I was a kid. I flat out shunned Ninja Turtles for years when I was a kid, even though I did have to admit that I liked some of the video games. It wasn't until the 1990 movie that I finally liked Ninja Turtles. It became one of my favorite movies ever. Bu then years later I saw the 2003 Ninja Turtles series and it, to me, was the greatest adaptation and version of the Ninja Turtles I had ever seen in my life. Everything that Batman: The Animated Series did for Batman, this show did for NInja Turtles. Treating it seriously, but not TOO seriously, and combining a little bit of everything from the past in loving reverence to make the DEFINITIVE Turtles for me.
So yes, this show will always go down in my heart as the best version of the Ninja Turtles. With the 1990 movie taking a 2nd place, the recent IDW comics as a good 3rd place, and the Archie Comics series as a 4th place.

That's why the 2003 TV series is known as the Mirage TMNT. Because this show is truly and mirror image of the comics. They adapted so much materials from the comics into the show that it's just unreal. Even some of the dialogue in different episodes is definitely word for word. I think the only changes they made was the shredder because in the comics he didn't last that long but eventually came back and perished again. The character Hun who is the Purple Dragon leader was so popular from the series that he had many comics adapting his backstory and one off. This show is truly iconic and will always be a cult classic like the 1987. The show got away with a lot of dark stuff but also kept its humor at the same time. You have to understand that a lot of shows that was dark at the time became more lighthearted just like Batman TAS which turned into The New Adventures of Batman and Robin the light-hearted version when the characters looks changed.

What i hate about tmnt 2003 is like there is 5 shredder. Tmnt 2003 is my childhood and i am rewatching it again along side tmnt 2012. Tmnt 2003 feels less dark than tmnt 2012 for me. Tmnt 2003 has the best shredder which is from season 1-3 and there was no need to have 4 other shredder after that. I hate season 5 cuz there is so much magic going on and i hate that ending. Turtles turned into dragons. One thing that makes me hate a series is magics. Tmnt 2012 had magic but not as much as tmnt 2003. My favorite seasons of tmnt 2k3 is season 1,3,6,7. I like season 2 too.

The ONLY TMNT show that had some respect for its source material
However, two things about this show bother me immensely:
    1) They are ninja who follow the way of bushido (which is the way of the samurai) instead of ninpo/ninjutsu
    2) They constantly kept referring to sais as blades, which is bullshit. Sais are blunt.

    • @omniframe8612

Great points. Some Sai are bladed tho, the more modern Sai that are blunt. I would assume that the version of Ninjitsu the TMNT use is probably a hybrid system comprised of many different martial arts including Kobudo ( since the turtles are using Okinawan Kobudo weapons) possibly Kyokushin considering how tough the turtles are protrayed along with Kendo and Iaido.

Basically the qualities of this show could be found in the 1st episode, where Splinter tests his sons with candle and each turtle get its own intro with specific music (Leo and Raph got the most tense and dominant).
Then goes Oroku Saki/Shredder. He is as enigmatic as Kane, tenacious as Shao Khan/ Vader, cunning and ruthless as Sauron + the design of cyber-samurai exosuit is fantastic.
The GBA games from Konami assured the popularity and positive feedback from the fans and new viewers up until the end of seson 4 and beginning of season 5 (the rest is... low quality and worse... unfortunately).
Fun fact, in Russia this series were rarely shown on TV and everyone was obsessed with VHS and DVDs, up until 2006, when TMNT 2003 were shown on Jetix and... let's just say it was genius.
We all know what were the Jetix's favorites and the contrast between them and TMNT was unimaginable strong.
I always wanted Oroku Saki to visit Beverly Hills, especially the WHOOP office.

For me I think the first 5 seasons are incredible, after that I think it should’ve stopped, seasons 6 & 7 were pretty poor, in particular season 6 aka Fast Forward, those 2 seasons were a complete departure from everything that made the show good and overall just felt like a giant waste of time, so my recommendation is watch the first 5 seasons and after that just stop, trust me, you’re not missing ANYTHING by skipping seasons 6 & 7

What I dont understand is that the 2003 TMNT follow the way of bushido...which is the way of the samurai...they should be following Nindo, which is the actual way of the Ninja.

Ted Michel it's a lot of inaccuracies with tmnt. Ninjas didn't use nunchaku. It is what it is tho. Naruto not the most accurate portrayal of ninjitsu either.

I REALLY didn't care for S5. It felt very much like a Mortal Kombat ripoff, right down to the mystical ship. :P

I loved this series. It stuck to the source material outside a few things and I had to watch series in it's entirety on RUclips and I always come back to it. Wish they would rerelease it.

Damn, I read the comments, and I understand those people who write about what the cartoon of the 80s remember more than 2003. I'm from Russia, and our situation is even worse. A large part of the adult fanbase love the ' 80s cartoon and 2012(thanks to the fan service, without it, these fans would never watch) and when people say "ROTTMNT is shit" they say: make way for the new cartoon, maybe he will be good. And these same people can't stand the cartoon 2003.

I'd like the 2003 version it was very good, I didn't mind the 2003 Shredder he was good at being bad he'd almost got turtles compared to the 1987, and the Live Movie Version.

I remember this reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 and I really do like the character's design and personalites a lot better than the other reboots from 2013 and 2018.
