I was born in 1996 but I was lucky enough to have older siblings who grew up in the 80s who showed me the 1980s version. So I grew up with both versions but I did see the 80s show and the movies first and have a bit more of an attachment to them than the 2003 version. This meant when this film was released I had the unique perspective of seeing it as someone who grew up on both shows. IMO it's a great tribute to the series and is the last piece of Turtles media I ever want to see, the only issue I had with it was the 80s turtles their individual traits and I wish the 2003 turtles were animated in the style of their first 5 seasons as opposed to tier last 2.
When Shredder from the old series looked for matches of the Shredder in the 2003 series, I was hoping he will discover all three Shredder's. Utrom, Tengu, and Cyber Shredder. I actually wanted those three Shredder's to be together.
"The Turtles always wins"... this guy never watched the episode "The Same as It Never Was". The Shredder even kills the Turtles in one of the very last scenes in the episode.
I like this movie mostly because I grew up with the 03 show (surprised no mention of them in the future was made) but might see the old show as...why not? Yeah it'll be...meh probably for me but wouldn't hurt. And the idea here is very interesting, each new TMNT comic/show even the games are just adding to the TMNT world. When Shredder looked into the different worlds he wasn't looking at them like other worlds, he was seeing all the creations and versions we ever made as a irl person world. This is the best 4Th breaking a show could probably do, breaking the 4Th utterly while at the same time not even touching it. It really does feel like this movie happens offscreen and the creators never even knew it happen. Much like how in a Nostalgia Critic movie the Critic via the plothole met his irl actor and writer and had the chance to live as a real human being. Something like that could be very cool, I mean they made it happen only needed the Turtles to realize there's one more world to theirs, ours. Because if our world never existed Turtles Prime wouldn't either. This movie has issues, but I did enjoy it but I do wish the 2 Shredders would've worked together....can you even imagine a all out brawl between many Turtles and Shredders? Also what about the Cyber Shredder? I only saw him like once at the end of the season when the Turtles returned from the future, but appears he became a big deal. Man I gotta see the rest of the 03 show. >_>
Spoops McGhost Idk, never saw his seasons. XD And isn't TNMT (that 1 film) canon to the 03 show? I mean they REDESIGNED SPLITTER to match how he looked in that film! Plus it has Karia leading the Footclan after Shredder's defeat.
There is a nod to this movie in the episode of the 2012 called Transdimensional Turtles where the 1980's Donatello uses the dimensional flashlight to pinpoint the source turtles dimension because 1980's Kraang was an idiot and tried to destroy all the turtle verses again. And the 2012 turtles are whipped off the space ship to help save the day then sent back again. Just noticed that it was either a bad reference to the 2k3 show or Kraang had a big change of heart and decided he no longer wanted to exist, either that or it was a really bad plan since he failed and was banished again by Kraang sub-prime. Does it mean that the turtles forever movie did still happen for the 1980's turtles but because the 2012 turtles would have been preteens at the time they were left playing catch up and had no idea about other turtles existing?
im 19 so the 2000 turtles was a favorite show of mine as a kid but i remember seeing the 80's turtles in re-runs when i was like 6. I agree with most of what you said but i loved this intensly... especially since id never heard of it and found it on what might of been the one saturday morning ii was up before noon in the last few years. I was extaticly surprsed
I've thought that since Nickelodeon owns the rights to TMNT now, that, & especially since Rob Paulsen is a part of the newest show, as Donatello, that there should be a redub of this movie, for the old actors of the original show, to reprise their roles. Obviously now, not James Avery, but Nickelodeon could get either the guy that voiced him in this, or a different, but still very talented, voice double, to redo the lines he doesn't get completely right. It'd be cool, if when/if Nickelodeon releases the uncut version of the movie on DVD &/or iTunes, the old turtles' vioces could be right.
The writers were most likely from the 2003 series' staff, so I can see that they didn't necessarily get the feel of the '87 series' style & feel down 100%, though it's more like 25% here. This movie could use a remake, if Nickelodeon wanted to do it, and I bet they could.
Yeah, I've seen it. I admit that the 80s turtles were better there than in Forever. I just wish it were a full-blown crossover, rather than just a cameo. I mean, they went to the trouble to get the other 3 actors of the originals, I'm just a bit disappointed that they didn't use them more.
I'm surprised about Tokka & Rahzar being as the random mutants in this movie. They appeared in the original series around 1993 or 1994 sometime after the second movie. It was an episode about a new mayor intending to imprison mutants running around the city after the Shredder had caused havoc at the zoo with some ooze. The mayor turned out to a mutated slug in disguise. I don't know if Tokka & Rahzar appeared in any other episodes because at this time I started to lose interest.
I always thought that the 80s ones in this movie were just taken to their most extreme silliness from the old show is all. I mainly wished that the 80s Leo was as serious as he was in the first season. Also I was wondering if maybe that mutant fly throughout the movie was somewhat a tribute to Stockman...just a thought... As for Krang and Shredder I think Krang was just humoring Shredder about the "giving the word" thing considering he laughed as he said his line. I liked them myself in this.
@TimothyMably IDW is doing the comic series. It's been pretty good. It's up to issue 7 right now. There's a new CG series happening this year sometime and a movie in the works from Michael Bay's team. -CL
“Hey Jim, I have a incredible idea” “What” “Let’s make a crossover with the turtles we made and the turtles that ours are based on” “Oh well it be like a thing where the characters meet each other, fight, and than learn to respect each other or something”. “No, I was thinking we just make fun of how fucking stupid the original turtles and just show how badass our turtles are and about how the shredder they fight is retarded compared to our badass.” “I love you” “I know, I love you too” Queue intense hot sweaty ball slapping sex scene
Good review, thanks for doing one for this, i agreed with most of what you said. I liked this movie, it was a total nostalgia trip for me, and i liked how they included the Comicbook versions of the turtles, what i didnt like was how they portrayed the 80's turtles and some of the continuity issues, but for the most part i enjoyed it.
@Geekvolution imagine if they did this with dc: the characters from the dc animated universe meet their counterparts from the classic live-action tv continuity(the george reeves superman, the lynda carter wonder woman, and the adam west batman), the classic animated continuity from the 60s and 70s, the mainstream dc comics, and the "new 52" comics.
Perfect as always. Though i think i might give it a 3.2 out of 4. I loved it for being able to see these characters i grew up with, but disliked how they got shafted. It had me really questioning on if i remembered the character correctly and eventually led to me going out and picking up the first 2 seasons of the 80s show. But overall, a really fun show.
Great review CL. I saw this special and I agree with your opinions on the depiction of the 80's Turtles. I grew up with the 2000's series, but I did see several of the original 80's series on VHS back when I was a kid as well, and the 80's Turtles in this felt more like a parody of that, which I felt was disrespectful.
@goodfellas1001 I guess I just needed a line about it. There's no mention of giong through time and space. Utrom Shredder just talks about finding Turtle Prime, not finding a historical moment in Turtle Prime and going there. I'm not saying they can't travel through time, I'm saying there needs to be a mention that that's indeed what they're doing. -CL
Great review as usual. The animation in this movie was spectacular. You were right about the 80's turtles being dumbed down way too much, and I didn't get the logic behind that all. That was probably the worst thing about the film. And the 80's Leonardo definitely has one of the worst voices for a role I've ever heard.
Its funny how controversial the 2o03 series is, because for me I think that version is the Batman TAS of the TMNT it dark, comedic and focuses on the ninja aspect a lot more than the 80's version. i wasn't really bothered by how the 80's turtles were presented because I understand why they did it that way. 2003 tmnt are a mixture of the mirage and 80's tmnt so i guess they wanted to present the 80's as an extreme so they dont overshadow that source turtles.
My biggest issue with this is that it treats the 1987 Turtles like they were complete buffoons, sure they were goofy but they could be serious when they had too. Don't get me wrong the 2003 Turtles are my childhood but I didn't like how they were shown as being edgy and having no sense of humor.
@thecrimsonpool Like I said in the review, I fell off this series while it was on and never got around to getting back into it. I've only seen the first couple seasons and folks have told me about some of the stuff that happened later, but I don't know anything about different animation. It looks like it did when I left it. -CL
@LittleMightyMan I liked a lot of things about it. I think it went too far at the end by attempting to do live action Turtles (at the very least it should have kept Mikey secluded in shadow). I'm going to talk about it on a fan film special sometime down the road. -CL
I enjoyed this film a lot, but my biggest problem with this film was the use of the 80's Turtles and characters, its a big joke and I felt the writers either never saw the series or didn't rewatch it recently for a better outlook. Somewhat like how the 21 Jump Street film looks like it will be. I loved seeing the B&W original Turtles and was really hoping this would have prompted the copyright owners to make a series in that form, Motion Comic B&W series would be awesome.
While it's true that the 80's turtles were really obnoxious and acting out of character in this, but I have to respectfully disagree with people who say that this special was completely spiteful towards the 80's show. There's actually lots of scenes that show the 80's turtles way of doing stuff as being more efficient than their 03' counterparts, despite the fact that it looks/sounds incredibly goofy. Personally, I felt the underlying theme was "Grim and Gritty" doesn't always get the job done!
If they didn't want their characters messed with, they shouldn't have sold them. Plain and simple. That or they should've negotiated a better deal. But all they saw was money. So that's what they get. Liking the changes or not, the 80s turtles were immensely popular. Disrespecting those turtles is just a slap in the face to the original cartoon fans without whom the franchise would not still exist today.
dcau batman nods. adam west bman: your not very socialable, are u? dcau batman: havent been since my parents died! adam west bman: the same thing happened to me, but it didn't change me as a person! dcau batman: was there a blood puddle where the lifeless bodies of your parents layed? adam west bman: no. dcau bman: *stares at adam west bman for a brief moment*. your the lucky one!
I felt the Justice League two parter "Legends" did a much better job of mixing the old style cheese with the modern tone without making them parodies of themselves. They were never made to look inferior to the current crop.
Wow, you're incredibly kind to this movie. The premise was good. I liked a villain absolutely flipping out ON Raph for his "asides". But the rest of it was just "Look, the 2000s are just SO cool, angsty and real while the 1980s was fake, lame and dumb." Donatello would NEVER EVER EVER not know the difference between a hammer and a wrench! This had a "Mary Sue" character vibe to it. This movie gets a -1 due to its disrespect to the 80s turtles and cast.
i can just imagine: tv beast boy: is there a terra in your dimension? comic beast boy: yes, but she was a psycopath who tried to kill us and ended up killing herself! tv bb and terra have blank stairs on their faces. comic bb: what? tv bb and terra still just stare in shock. comic bb: did i say too much? another situation: adam west bman: so, how is your relationship the jim gordon of your reality? dcau bman: positive. i nab the crooks, he puts them away. aw bman: ever get coffee?
@Geekvolution i totally agree, all films should hold to the same rating. i totally believe that a tnmt movie can hold to the same status that dark knight can. Just takes a decent filmmaker to direct.
@Geekvolution Ya it was season 6 & 7 that changed animation. It was less stylized and more "polygonish" kind of like what happened with Batman TAS and TNAS same but different. lol just a nitpick nothing crazy. Great review as usual Cap.
@KamisamanoOtaku The 80s Turtles were caricatures of their true selves, but remember this movie BARELY got made with the license changing hands. Could have been an epic finale season/crossover. Your concerns about the time periods don't make sense: yes time travel was involved but especially by the end, it had to be: what is the point of destroying the "prime" versions "after" they have already spawned parallel realities? Vague 80s turtles returned to about the time frame they left.
Mmm, this was a great review with a lot of good points. Personally I think this should have been an entire season. That is the only way justice would have been served for the non current characters. Troy
I am impressed, my good sir! I initially thought this was just 100% homage material, and could never be thought of critically, and here you are, squeezing water from a stone yet again! You could probably critique a blade of grass if you wanted!
You know what would've been a funnier joke than "it's like having five mikeys" when they come across the mirage turtles the 80s turtles say "great it's like having four Casey Jones"
killing the mirage turtles in the present comics wouldn't stop the creation of all other turtles, it needs to be the first comic because that is where it really all began
I gotta agree more with Phelous on this one as I watched both series! the 80s show as a kid in the early 90s and on VHS tapes growing up and the 2000s series as a teen for nostalgia sake! And when I learned of this movie I started watching it here on youtube and I couldn't get past 30mins of the annoying insult of the 80s series. To me it's like if they made a Crisis on Infinite Earths animated movie and had the Super friends as a universe and the characters started crying when the fight started
I totally agree with what you said about them over doing the goofiness on the 80s turtles i dont remember them being that annoying and goofy they should have had a bigger role
Eh, I still get the distinct feeling that the 80's turtles weren't nearly "shafted" just as much as they were "condensed". The only point I would really concede to is that 80's Leonardo never attempted to pull his "stick-in-the-mud leader" shtick. Though, Raph still gets all his quips, Mikey's good vibes easy-going stuff, and Don still gets his nerdy charm in. So I really disagree that the 80's turtles as a group gets shafted, just that 80's Leo did. And even then, just feels left out for time.
Think about it: Everyone sees the 80's turtles (if not the franchise as a whole) as silly, not serious and pizza loving. While everyone who knows about the original comics always talks about how "dark, grim, gritty and realistic" those books where. The movie's showing us how people see these people see these two very different versions of the turtles.
@kurvos - I was still surprised on how many people agreed towards phelous that he bashed too much on this FUN, LOVING, and Nostalgic kind of movie. Kept on hammering his distaste on this movie cause of the turtles being dumb, stupid, and blah blah... Does anyone even OUTGROWN from the 87 cartoon when the 90s spawned more of an adult feel cartoons and ask themselves, "Gee... I hope they made an even darker-take on the TMNT CARTOON, because that was too kid friendly from the comics I read."
Did anyone notices when Leoandro87 told the backstory of how they got there he said Don had a rocket it idea He used a nickname ppl!!!! That's not right
Yeah, that's kind of a nit pick but I totally agree. the 80's Turtles ALWAYS called each other by their full names. just another example of 4kids not quite doing their homework on the 80's turtles. I have often wondered if they even liked the 80's cartoon. To be fair, yes, the 80's cartoon was drastically different from the original Comic, and the 2K3 series was very faithful to the comic, but I felt there were times that the 2K3 series was trying to be too different from the 80's show.
@Geekvolution Hey Cap. I'd like to request something for everyone with a few upcoming "Superhero Rewind" episodes. In April, would you please review the Marvel films (The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger), what with "The Avengers" coming out? And, in June, would you please review The Dark Knight, seeing how "Dark Knight Rises" will be coming out the next month? Thanks all the same. Another great episode.
You are harsh when it comes to the ratings, this is not an attack or anything. I actually mean it as a complement. I think its good that you to hold things to a certain standard but also you have an x/4 rating which is kind of like saying films can only achieve so much. I watch rewind alot and I love it. But there are somethings that are off putting at times is all. Thanks for all the work you do CL.
Hmmmm not 100% quite for grown ups for the newer turtles, since it is still a kids show. It just has dark elements that you rarely seen in a kids cartoon. Swat Kats, Batman animated series, Extreme Ghostbusters were all kid shows, just that the violence were a little toned-down. However, SPAWN animated series wasn't a kid show xD. That show was twice as bloody and violent than any of those.
18:56 actually that's not true I'm 11 and I grew up with both. I started watching the TMNT movies at about 4 years old, after about a year I found the TMNT 1987 VCR Tapes. I was really hooked on TMNT so I also saw the new TMNT series when I started school. Now I'm going to watch the new TMNT show and I'm going to buy the new TMNT comic's.
I was born in 1996 but I was lucky enough to have older siblings who grew up in the 80s who showed me the 1980s version. That Would have been Amazing
R.I.P James Avery your uncle Phil and Shredder will be missed
5:11 Except 87 Raph, who is fully aware of everyone's fictional nature.
RIP James Avery.
Mikey Prime: So, you're supposed to be us from other worlds. I don't see it.
"The Turtles always wins"... this guy never watched the episode "The Same as It Never Was". The Shredder even kills the Turtles in one of the very last scenes in the episode.
I find it funny the ONLY set missing are the Next Mutation Turtles.
you have been warned.
I like this movie mostly because I grew up with the 03 show (surprised no mention of them in the future was made) but might see the old show as...why not? Awesome review! I liked both the 2000s and the 80s Ninja Turtles, but it's sad that the 80s turtles are being mistreated in this movie.
you should do the 2012 version
@TheMantaBluRay The uncut version. Though I had seen the TV version before and didn't really notice what was added.

Had potential but was a shade simplistic, turtle prime shiuld have been longer with some searching and fighting going on before the final fight
great review keep it up
Imagine if they added the team from The Next Mutation.
I don't have a planned date for that one but it'll happen down the road.

Who else thinks that the 2012 Turtles got the balance of darkness and silliness just right?
Not me :P
That's what I like about the new series

backyard superkid
yessssssssssssssss ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

when does the new 2012 series air? i hurd march 31st but i dont know if thats right.

@Geekvolution - Thanks for that, and great review btw.
the mirage turtles are where there are because that's the first issue of the first incarnation
They were never made to look inferior to the current crop.
i never knew about the black and white show
hey geekvoultion could u do a rewind on transformers prime
Wow, you're incredibly kind to this movie.
The premise was good. I liked a villain absolutely flipping out ON Raph for his "asides".
But the rest of it was just "Look, the 2000s are just SO cool, angsty and real while the 1980s was fake, lame and dumb." Donatello would NEVER EVER EVER not know the difference between a hammer and a wrench! This had a "Mary Sue" character vibe to it.
This movie gets a -1 due to its disrespect to the 80s turtles and cast.
i can just imagine:
tv beast boy: is there a terra in your dimension?
comic beast boy: yes, but she was a psycopath who tried to kill us and ended up killing herself!
tv bb and terra have blank stairs on their faces.
comic bb: what?
tv bb and terra still just stare in shock.
comic bb: did i say too much?
another situation:
adam west bman: so, how is your relationship the jim gordon of your reality?
dcau bman: positive. i nab the crooks, he puts them away.
aw bman: ever get coffee?
can you review irobot
@LittleMightyMan Yep, sure have.

@Geekvolution i totally agree, all films should hold to the same rating. i totally believe that a tnmt movie can hold to the same status that dark knight can. Just takes a decent filmmaker to direct.
I was born in 2005 and watched tmnt 2003 and forever and good by leo and the other😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
@Geekvolution Ya it was season 6 & 7 that changed animation. It was less stylized and more "polygonish" kind of like what happened with Batman TAS and TNAS same but different. lol just a nitpick nothing crazy. Great review as usual Cap.
@maverickhunterdelta Captain Logan. I always sign my posts because we have other people who occasionally comment (Vince and Sarah).
im surprised you did not comment on the different animation on the 2000 turtles Cap.
@KamisamanoOtaku
The 80s Turtles were caricatures of their true selves, but remember this movie BARELY got made with the license changing hands.
@kurvos Sorry I didn't credit you for pointing me to that review-- I really should have.
-CL
that would be really cool and entertaining lol
Oh, yeah I was wondering that myself but since you put the Crow in I thought "why not RoboCop?" lol. Thanks for replying though and considering it.
Are you gonna do a review for Hancock at some point? (just curious)
@Geekvolution - what does -CL mean? o.o
Captain logan have you watch the Play Ninja turtles coming out of their shells
i like the drawing style of the comic though
james rolfe talked about itin his "tmnt live-action leftovers" video.
You know what would've been a funnier joke than "it's like having five mikeys" when they come across the mirage turtles the 80s turtles say "great it's like having four Casey Jones"
4:47 is that the starkiller base
killing the mirage turtles in the present comics wouldn't stop the creation of all other turtles, it needs to be the first comic because that is where it really all began
@riotmaker345 The 0-4 scale is like the Siskel/Ebert 4 star movie scale.

What would you have re-rated the '90s Turtles movie, Capt.?
@Geekvolution I thought that was thumbs? But I never watched them, I do watch you thought, keep up the good work.
And even then, just feels left out for time.
i guess the 80s cartoon turtles were like that so that they could make a bigger contrast from the 2000s turtle
@Geekvolution good review .
I hope they made an even darker-take on the TMNT CARTOON, because that was too kid friendly from the comics I read."
hey captain logan, did u know that the voice of the tick Townsend Coleman was also the voice michaelangelo in the original series.
I liked this a lot more before I saw a lot more of the 80s series. It was really annoying at the time but Phelous had a point
Did anyone notices when Leoandro87 told the backstory of how they got there he said Don had a rocket it idea
He used a nickname ppl!!!!
I assume the new series would be part of this as well.
@Geekvolution What did you think of it?
Have you seen the Casey Jones fan film?
@aproposreeve I would've appreciated Rat King, too.

Rowdy C's Review: www.dailymotion.com/video/x20yrzt_ninja-turtles-retrospective-turtles-forever_fun
Yeah I'm surprised the 2003 Stockman wasn't in this movie he prolly would've played an important roll.
It's because in his original version he was part of the Marvel universe and had crossovers with superheroes.
@dornravlin There's no black and white show. It's an animated interpretation of the original comics.

Explanation for 10:10 - 11:00 wibbly wobbly timey whimey..............stuff
18:56 actually that's not true I'm 11 and I grew up with both. I started watching the TMNT movies at about 4 years old, after about a year I found the TMNT 1987 VCR Tapes. I was really hooked on TMNT so I also saw the new TMNT series when I started school. Now I'm going to watch the new TMNT show and I'm going to buy the new TMNT comic's.
