I'd like Nightwatcher to appear in more Turtles fiction. Imagine a story about Ralph becoming sick of the other turtles, and breaking away to do his own thing as Nightwatcher.
Strangely though, despite its flaws, this is the the one turtle movie that stuck to me the most. Probably because it was great visually and that it captured the turtles' personalities perfectly. Hmm..I also think it's been 2 years since Leonardo left given that it was mentioned by April at the beginning that his "training period ended a year ago". I suspect he was given a year to train but he extended it for another year, therefore, they're probably 17 years old by this time. Oh and another thing, even in twins, triplets, quadruplets and so on..there's still an order of which one is oldest.
My teacher was the concept artist for this film. He told us (the students) that their were two scripts of the TMNT movie. The first script had a darker tone with little to no humor. The second was the final cut which had a lighter tone and tons of humor. The only part that made it to the final cut from the original script was when Raph and Leo had the serious confrontation on the rooftop. From my teacher's opinion he said the first script was more mature in atmosphere and story
The only time I've ever seen the turtle's ages was in their first arcade game appearance. If you let the cabinet sit, it would scroll to a different turtle profile and reveal their stats. According to this video game's canon, prime Leo is 17, Raph is 16, while Don and Mike are both 15.
the little brother older brother factor is a japanese tradition sadly doesnt mean age but a way of classifing there skills... the older brother factor meaning leader...i hear it here with friends in japan not just family
I don't mind this movie I think it's mainly because I love the designs off the turtles, they are my favorites so far. But to me I wish the Shredder was in it and Donnie and Mikey actually had more screen time.
This movie's one major mistake is the LOTR like prologue. It looks cool, but it also gives away the fact that the so-called villain isn't really bad. They play it up as a twist, but they've already told us the truth at the very beginning of the movie. Otherwise, this is a fun movie.
It's been awhile since I saw this movie, but looking at pictures from it, the CGI, at least on the turtles, looks... remember how you said the plot seems like a video game? That's how I feel about the turtle and monster graphics
@CoolioVids101 Thanks for noticing! Yes I did, and I've been using it since the Powerpuff review, though it might sound different b/t reviews b/c I've been trying different things with it. -Captain Logan
You would probably like the new series with the characters of the turtles They all have very developed personalities. For example Raph and Leo clash a lot and it shows the different sides to their personality.
If you want a fun ninja turtles story, this is not it. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. I actually liked seeing these characters in a different place in life, and no longer teens. Which makes sense why this is called "TMNT", and the way it's used here is; "the twenties mutant ninja turtles". The whole Leo journey out in the world training, and Raph's new vigilante persona were the most interesting thing in this, and that should've been the whole story, while also showing more of the main cast, including Casey Jones and April O'Neil . I would have really enjoyed seeing Leonardo's training fleshed out more and getting a montage of what he's been up to, as well as Raphael and how their paths went in different ways, but in some ways, pretty similar. Honestly, what we have isn't bad and I like how they butted heads, and then how they came together and started to work as a team again, but the expanding of this side of the story would've made it way more impactful. TMNT 2007 also feels too much like a sequel because they mention things and leave you in the dark as to what actually happened and how exactly we got here. And that's a shame. I get that this is supposed to be somewhat connected to the live action trilogy from the 1990's, but that's the problem too. It's only partially connected to those and is too different considering it's CG, it can easily be mistaken as it's own thing when looking at the poster or cover. Karai being in charge of the Foot Clan could've been an interesting choice for their main villain here because we'd also get to see more of what's happened to that group since the Shredder was defeated, or according to Leonardo, killed. This film definitely had some potential but Winters and his brotherhood are just not that interesting and don't feel well incorporated into the turtles' story. As for the 13 monsters, the only fun one to be dealt with was the jersey devil in the diner, against the Nightwatcher. It's a 6/10. Some sidenotes; I like the reinvention of April or the path she went down becoming a martial artist and an explorer. And the voice talent here was pretty good, there was Sarah Michelle Gellar as April, Chris Evans as Casey, Nolan North as Raphael and it's nice that even Kevin Smith lent his voice for this, as the cook at the diner! And maybe it's just me but I think Sir Patrick Stewart should've been selected for master Splinter.
In terms of years, they're all the same age, but some are apparently weeks or maybe months older than others. As far as I can tell, it goes, from eldest to youngest, Leo, Raph, Don, Mike
i actually really liked this movie, only problem i really had with it was the villain story and the fact that Donatello and Michaelangelo were kinda pushed aside. But it had great animation, great writing,an awesome rivalry story between Leonardo and Raphael plus it was really exciting to watch at times.
And this is why I take Turtles Forever movie and 2003's TMNT series (blends mixture with light-heartedness, fun, and dark themed story.... and it has SHREDDER)... ANYYYYDAAAAY than to watch this movie. Good review, straight to the point, and not to mentioned it just feels "tacked-on" for a turtles movie.
I personally think that the movie's pretty good. However, I really wished that Donny and Mikey had more screen time. They're my favorite ones of the group (mainly cause their interaction provides the most humor). As for the ages, you do know they don't stay teens forever in the source material correct?
Captain Logon? I actually like this movie. The best part for me is the realization after Leo and Raph fought, and Raph sees why he's not leader. Fore it's because he wasn't ready. Splinter told him this. He has comparison which is a great leadership role. But, it's because he's a loose cannon that makes him not a good leader. I remember the 1st fight the turtles got into and Raph was so focused on fighting the monster, he forgot to pay attention to his brothers. Micky was getting knocked around.
The film oddly reminds me of "Superman Returns." They both seem to carry over continuity from previous films in the franchise, and yet do their own thing. Both involve the hero leaving home before the events of the film and returning to find everything is different. But in both cases, it's not entirely clear why the hero left in the first place.
That's what I was thinking. They are also ignoring stuff. Superman Returns ignored everything except the first 2 films. This one ignored the tv series that was intendeed to be set in the movies continuity.
the turtles are the turtles because they have individual personalities. mikey is the comic relief (1st fav), leo is the self-proclaimed leader (2nd fav), ralph is the the rebellious hot head (3rd fav), and donny is the smart one (4th fav).
I agree the villain and the plot is rather dull, but the film has such energy and style I can't help but feel the film is underrated. And I'm kinda sick of people wishing Shredder was in the film. Shredder has been done to death!
Nice review! I haven't seen this movie in awhile but remember liking it. I don't know how I'd feel about it now though. I know there is a 5 issue comic book detailing the events leading to this movie. There is an individual issue for April, Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo, and Donatello. I haven't read it but maybe they show more Shredder in it. I remember being really bummed Shredder wasn't in this, and wanted to see more of this version of him after the beginning mentioned him.
This movie review made me dislike Nostalgic Critic. In his review, he made fun of the movie, then gives a 2 minute review which wasn't even a good one. I was able to explain everything he made fun of and made spence of it.
@Vossil LOL I guess I came off more annoyed than I meant to. Really only with the villain plot-- the Turtles are great. I may have over-emphasized my irritation with the Winter's character. And you might be right-- it's hard for me to hear Patrick Stewart is doing something and not be disappointed if it isn't excellent. -Captain Logan
The other film that this oddly reminds me of is "Felix the Cat: The Movie," because it involves popular characters, and yet has a plot that seems to have nothing to do with them.
@Geekvolution - I have a bad feeling about what you're going to say about Spider-Man 3. IMHO, I thoroughly enjoyed it. There may have been some rather strange parts (What's with the British newscaster?) and Venom may have not been fully realized (What do you expect? Sam Raimi didn't want him in in the first place), but I liked it for what it was, and had a good time. P.S. Why did they have to retcon the person who killed Uncle Ben? (Oh, now the SANDMAN killed him!)
That animated movie in which the 80´s turtles meet the 2003 turtles established the live action continuity as a different one from this movie. I regard of the movie, yeah, the rivalry between Raf and Leo is the best thing in it, but the movie it´s a solid 2 out of 4.
People did notice the monsters, they were all mythic creatures, cyclops big foot vampire, the only parts of this movie I didn't like were that Leo came randomly instead of because of the monsters like you said and that Leo said he was gonna go after raph and fought the nightwatcher even though he didn't know it was raph. Oh, and the turtles are 19 in this movie, and the turtles all always different ages, about minutes apart
@Geekvolution i agree but i do hope they do get a chance for another tmnt movie though maybe improve what was lacking in this cause i like how they potrayed the turtles and there relationship...sad mako had to die...finaly an actualy japanese person that played master splinter....though the the muppetteer for elmo did great in the first movie I think a good japanese english speaker would be best
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: A kind of underrated great comicbook movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II-The Secret of the Ooze: A watchable guilty pleasure Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: BULLSHIT. TMNT: Meh, it's better than Episode III but it's kind of messy.
Woe, i don't think i've ever heard you so annoyed by a film you reviewed. You must have had high hopes for this when it came out. I'll be waiting for your Spiderman 3 review peace out!
This one was meh. I actually found it quite boring, I just enjoyed the '03 TV show so much. This was nothing like it. The Leo/Raph rivalry was such an eye-roller, just there for fanboys and kids to get excited over. The turtles are better when they're fighting together. I actually can't wait to see Michael Bay's version. I've been long craving a live-action turtle movie that doesn't look silly or fake.
According to the director, it was intendeed to be set in the same continuity of the first 3 films. Just animated instead of live action. And they are ignoring Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation. Which supposedly was set in the same continuity as the movies. Think of it like the Superman Returns of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Is basically Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV. Except not sure why aren't they living in the same subway station from the previous 2 films. Or why Splinter has both ears.
Speaking of that video game reference there are some games you should review only for the story, like in the vain of your Arkham Asylum review. I suggest my favorite game ever KoTOR. If you think games have no plot at all, yeah KoTOR has a great one
This should have been a video game then if the guy was doing VIDEO GAME animation! It could have been a really awesome game on its own. The game was underwhelming because the focus was in the movie production not the game. But if this were a game only, it would have got better production value and perhaps better storytelling due to video games allowing infinite hours rather than a fixed time period a movie has.
I totally agree. The plot is lame, but the animation (specially the fight between Raph and Leo) and the characters are awesome. Such a pity the plot...
i enjoyed but found it weird they stop fighting crime without the shredder. i mean spiderman without going into the park or supervilliian gets plenty of minor to medium crime, same for batman. why not the turtles.
@reviewreviewer1 - They're all better. Geekvolution touched down all the heavy detailed about the movie's faults and the especially positives, while Doug did it a more funnier, straight forward in letting his audience watch it with him through the beginning, middle, and ending of the movie. I'd say one isn't better than the other, but more like apples and oranges anyway.

OH MY ******* GOD
Leonardo (oldest)
Raphael (second oldest)
Donatello (second youngest)
Michelangelo (youngest)
HOW IS THAT SO HARD TO FIGURE OUT?!?
Because most of the tmnt instalments never really imply that.
yo if Nickelodeon used these character models in their series I would've loved the show even more
Same
the little brother older brother factor is a japanese tradition sadly doesnt mean age but a way of classifing there skills... the older brother factor meaning leader...i hear it here with friends in japan not just family

Time to sit back and relax and listen to a legend!
The plot does indeed suck but the chemistry between everyone is beautifully done.
I think that if the creators had the chance to make a TMNT 2,that movie could have pleased a lot more people

most of the film holds up pretty well but the villain is very lame and the plot sounds like a video game, not a movie. so we are on the same page
did you get a new mic? the audio sounds better...oh and nice review dude
This movie used to be a 10 out of 10 for me but now especially after watching other better incarnations of the turtles I now consider it a 7 out of 10
Interesting that this is the second week in a row you've done a superhero movie featuring Chris Evans. =P
I agree the villain and the plot is rather dull, but the film has such energy and style I can't help but feel the film is underrated. And I'm kinda sick of people wishing Shredder was in the film. Shredder has been done to death!
I thought it was a pretty good Turtles film. I mean sure it was not live action but then again who cares. I liked the film.

@bulletproofKevlar I didn't know that-- interesting. It needs clarification in the film for an audience without that background.

@Geekvolution well it is a BIG improvement also cant wait for spidey 3 review that should be fun
good call man. would've loved for them to do a sequel and have another go at it. maybe get a better story and throw some familiar villains at us
I never thought they where the same age ... even in the old arcade game when they showed their profile it told their age
Awesome review!!! I totally agree with everything you said about this movie!
The other film that this oddly reminds me of is "Felix the Cat: The Movie," because it involves popular characters, and yet has a plot that seems to have nothing to do with them.
r.i.p mako iwamatsu
I wish I could've read that first draft.

@reviewreviewer1 - don't know, thought doug did fine with his review take on this movie.
Probably been said before, but April was never a news reported.
Well, not in the comics, anyway.
Also this movie had a video game and you don't even get to fight 13 of the monsters.
This one was meh. I actually found it quite boring, I just enjoyed the '03 TV show so much. This was nothing like it. i think that the turtles are born the same day but different times so one has to be older
I want a Mikey and Don centered movie
@Angel90900 yes they are
According to the director, it was intendeed to be set in the same continuity of the first 3 films. Just animated instead of live action. And they are ignoring Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation. @Geekvolution they're 15
the turtles
I totally agree. The plot is lame, but the animation (specially the fight between Raph and Leo) and the characters are awesome. Such a pity the plot...
hmm make that 2.
It should have been a reboot!
i enjoyed but found it weird they stop fighting crime without the shredder. i mean spiderman without going into the park or supervilliian gets plenty of minor to medium crime, same for batman. why not the turtles.
It should have been reboot instead of a sequel to the first three live action films.
@reviewreviewer1 - They're all better. I thought you sounded more annoyed in your Blade Trinity review.
@kakarot134 It's consider a sequel to most of them
I still don't get why he doesn't like the movie Batman Returns. It's the definitive Batman movie.
The director went on to do "Dylan Dog: Dead of Night" which I hear is terrible.
@DarkHeroesForever it can't be a sequel to the first three, it's not live action.
thi is my faveroute TMNT movie aside from the 3rd live action movie
@JudgeMagisterDelita Sure, but this was the cookie-cutter plot of your average action game.
-Captain Logan
game is better then film LOL but I rly liked it except those stone guys and monsters
Thanks for at least saying what you liked about the the movie instead of just giving a full on beating of the movie
No offense, but you kinda sound like Donatello lol.
To me this film doesn't work as a sequel to the first three.
Make more tmnt
Great review. The studios follow up film Astro Boy was MUCH MUCH Better.
I fucking hate how they just make up crappy villains for these movies.
Make the villain Baxter Stockman, or the Rat King! Put Leatherhead in the movie!
I don't care about your made up villains!
Sure, Karai and the foot clan are in this, but they are not the focus and they don't do that much.
3/5
No one wanted to see this plot.
