This is probably the best spiderman review ive actually seen. Most reviews just make stupid criticisms of things that they didn't want to see or didn't understand. You do show a deeper understanding of the film, its intentions, and it's messages. You can't begin to imagine how much I appreciate that. I still disagree with you on many parts, but I still love your criticism. Also...a note about Harry's death. I always interpreted that to show Harry has made the decision to be different from his father. Norman died trying to kill spiderman by his own glider, Harry died trying to save him...and he actually succeeded.
PrimeVinyl Also the significance of sandman being uncle ben's killer shows it's something peter will either suffer knowing his uncle's killer is out there or forgive him...because sandman cannot be killed. It questions what it means to be spiderman and whether or not peter really has gotten over his uncle's death.
Yousuf Khan i have seen it, i cant recall much from it...but i think this review is better because it tries to understand the themes that the movie tries to express....
Get rid of sandman, Introduce symbiote costume and eddie brock but do not turn them into venom until the next film, make harry the villain. Do NOT break up Peter and MJ and have them face a REAL relationship issue in an adult manner. BAM already a better plot.
Spiderman 3 should've centered the story around Peter and Harry and the Venom origin (the origin only) as a subplot Spiderman 4, that never happened, should've been Peter and Harry teaming up to fight Venom (and Venom only)
Great review! I love how you deep you go into your reviews, and really analyze them. You've started changing the way I see superhero films. Keep 'em coming, Cap
I know this film is probably the weakest in the Raimi trilogy, but I'll be honest, I enjoyed Spider-Man 3 far more than TASM2. Spider-Man 3 had better action, better pacing, and was more enjoyable. I know SM 3's effects look dated now, but I believe the practical stunt work puts it above TASM 2, which, let's face it, was a CGI fest with some live-action sprinkled in.
Spider-Man 3 got a lot of things wrong, but it also got some things right. It's a frustrating, disappointing film, but it's still watchable, and even fun! The only absolutely major flaws (without going into comic book issues) are the crazy mood whiplash towards the end, the near retconning of events from the first film, and the creation of a new villain, only to kill him off in the last half-hour. It should have been two films, but unfortunately, was released before Harry Potter 7 & 8.
***** I wouldn't say that, though I prefer Spider-Man 3 over TASM 2. It is also disheartening that TASM 2 is already falling into problems that the Raimi trilogy didn't have until the third film. (Too many villains, occasionally rushed plot, etc.)
I agree. Spider-Man 3 (2007) was almost great. It’s good. Harry should have been the main villain. Marry Jane and Petter should have a good relationship, Sandman should have been there as a secondary villain. And Black Suit Spider-Man should have shown more anger. Eddie Brock should have been saved for the fourth movie it’s fine to have Eddie but Venom should have been saved for the fourth movie.
I don't think Mary Jane's getting hit by spiderman is what makes him want to get rid of the costume entirely. But more so the straw that broke the camels back. Other than that completely agree. Great review. Sub 4 u.
Tbh, spiderman 3 would have worked if it focused more on wrapping up on Harry, and starting and finishing on sandman, and if venom was introduced in a spiderman 4.
IMO the Peter and Harry plot should have been the main story and Sandman and Venom should have been saved for sequels. Plus Venom should have a better actor too because Topher Grace was shit.
@@brickraiderproductions7426 Raimi wanted to do Harry, Sandman and the Vulture in 3, his movie would have probably been pretty overstuffed even if the studio hadn't pushed for Venom.
@@Xehanort10 The big problem with that is a lot of viewers wouldn't want Goblin II, let alone just Goblin II, in the third movie, too soon after the first movie-and especially given the criticism of the first movie Goblin's costume.
The way I always looked at it was that Peter knew that he hadn't killed Harry, he just thought he taught him a lesson by having the bomb go off right by his face but knowing that he'd live. As if to say "don't mess me with me ever again, or it'll be worse than a pumpkin bomb" or something along those lines.
Sometimes it looks like the webbing on Spideys suit is white and someimes it look black. Is it just some kind of optical illusion with some kind of glossy material?
Great review, pretty much sums up my thoughts. One thing I do want to propose, though, is the MJ plot isn't bad - just executed poorly. In Spider-Man 2, we see Peter Parker at his most worn-down - he loses his job, is failing school, and can't date the woman of his dreams. What I think Rami was going for is that MJ in this film is at her lowest point. She's lost her job (and her career), while her boyfriend is beloved by the city. Like Peter, she's wondering what is going wrong in her life - and, even worse, Peter doesn't realize this and makes things worse. The optimism that Peter embodies, ironically, would be what causes tension. In theory, that's a good plot. A substantial improvement over the romantic subplots in the first two. Of course, it can't work here - the black suit makes Peter, who should be sympathetic for this to work, a jerk. And it also requires characters to, you know, talk. It makes no sense Peter would tell MJ about possibly killing someone, but not about why he and Harry are at odds. Especially now that Harry knows he's Spider Man! And in a movie with three villains (with Sandman taking up most of the first half and the black suit/Venom taking up the second), there simply isn't any time to breathe. And there isn't any time for whatever was left of that plot to be resolved. Basically, if this movie was paced better, it could work. If the movie had a singular villain in Harry (which it should have, that plot has been built for two movies) or even Sandman or the black suit, it could have worked. But there simply wasn't time. If they had split this into two movies (which they absolutely could have done - the budget was $260 million, more than Batman v. Superman, Civil War, and Age of Ultron), I think it could have worked. But of course, it didn't happen.
The newspaper article reads, "Spider-Man Shows His True Colors" In Superman III(1983), Ross Webster's sister tells Superman that he's "showing his true colors".
***** Spiderman 3 at least has a plot structure, villains with motivation that make sense and it's focus is on telling a story instead of advertising future sequels.
***** Spider-Man 3 doesn't completely butcher Spider-Man's greatest enemy (Green Goblin). As for the rest, Harry's arc in TASM 2 is handled terribly and his reasons for hating Spider-Man are ridiculous, The fight scenes are both underwhelming and unmemorable, Peter's relationship with Gwen is insufferable in a different way and Aunt May's subplot is entirely pointless.
***** Harry makes no sense in TASM 2, His relationship with Peter is truncated into two scenes so their supposed "friendship" feels forced and unearned, His desire for an immediate cure to his vaguely defined disease makes no sense and his motivation for wanting to kill Spider-Man ("You didn't give me what I now realize I shouldn't have taken") is ludicrous. Harry's motivation in SM3 is better by far. Just because the Peter/MJ stuff in SM3 was arguably worse doesn't mean the Peter/Gwen stuff in TASM 2 wasn't insufferable in a different way. The chemistry between actors is honestly the only thing that relationship has going for it, otherwise It's extremely saccharine and it makes Peter come off as incredibly immature. In terms of Action, SM3 surpasses TASM 2 by far especially in terms of the final battles (Whether it's the power plant fight which looks like a video game cutscene or the Spidey/Goblin fight where most if it is spent in deadlock) Rosemary Harris completely leaves Sally Field in the dust in terms of Aunt May portrayals, It helps that in Spider-Man 2, She actually got things to do aside from compete for Peter's attention with his dead boring parents and the pointless nurse sub-plot. Honestly, The only thing you can argue TASM movies had over the Raimi ones was the handling of the Romance. Aside from that They clean out TASM movies in every other way especially in terms of characters, performances and emotion. J. Jonah Jameson alone is a more memorable not to mention more entertaining character than any of the supporting cast of TASM movies.
Good review. I would like to point out a few things. 1. Sam Raimi originally wanted The New Goblin, Sandman and The Vulture to be the villains in Spider-Man 3. Ben Kingsley and John Malkovich were considered for the role. But producer Avi Arad and co-writers Ivan Raimi and Alvin Sargent convinced Sam to replace The Vulture with Venom but Sam didn't understand where Venom's humanity was. Eddie Brock, already had a small role in the screenplay. Avi told the Sam that Venom had a strong fan base, so he included the character in the movie to please them and even began to appreciate the character himself based on how well Alvin wrote him in the screenplay and the fact that he fit the themes of forgiveness, redemption and loyalty. 2. Sandman was introduced as a villain in this movie as Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire thought he was a visually fascinating character. So Sam, Ivan and Alvin created a background of the character being Uncle Ben's true killer to increase Peter's guilt over his death and challenge his simplistic perception of the event. 3. Harry sacrifices himself to save Peter as a greater act of devotion. 4. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies have comic relief. 5. Gwen Stacy is in this movie so that she could be a possible future girlfriend for Peter, a woman who Eddie Brock is in love with and an unintended rival to Mary Jane.
I'd like to address a misconception: Sam Raimi never hated Venom, he grew up reading the classic Spider-Man Comics with the Villains such as the Gren Goblin, Vulture, Lizard, Dr Octopus, Mysterio, Sandman etc. Venom came MUCH later and Sam Raimi wasn't familiar with that character.
Top 10s 'N' Tributes No you're wrong, ONLY John Malkovich was considered for the Vulture for Spider-Man, the Vulture was originally considered for Spider-Man 3 and Ben Kingsley was eyed but Avi Arad replaced the Vulture's role with Venom.
Hectorferjr2 I need to correct your first paragraph, the Vulture and Sandman were the ONLY villains that were intended, Harry Osborn was intended to become the New Goblin, Sam Raimi wanted Harry Osborn conflicted between being himself and trying to become who his father was.
Yousuf Khan™ I knew The Vulture was considered for Spider-Man 4 and I heard both Ben and John were considered for the parts, so I assumed it was for Spidey 4. However, I have never heard that The Vulture was considered for the third movie. Can you give me a link to something that proves this? Also, Avi didn't force Venom into the movie, he convinced Sam to include him after he pushed the idea onto him a lot, saying it's what the fans want.
Great Review!!! Subscribed :) but just pointing it out, at 19:25...the reason Venom was like "oh hey you look evil and angry are you mad at spider-man? Hey me too" ...and the reason for that is actually because the symbiote bonded with Peter...meaning it has the characteristics of him...that's how the symbiote has the powers and has spiderman's brain...and after the symbiote bonds with Eddie...you know how it goes
@123rockfan All valid points, though I didn't really notice any problems with Cambell and Cromwell. Cromwell just wasn't given anything to do and Cambell was doing something that was just kinda written silly anyway. A lot of the other things you mentioned have been dealt with plenty in other reviews, so I didn't feel the need to mention them again. Thanks for the comments! -Captain Logan
I talked to someone who worked on Spider-Man 3, and asked him about the bridge break-up scene. I asked him why Mary Jane didn't tell Peter that Harry was setting them up. His response was: "It's more complicated than that. Harry isn't just a supervillian. He's also their close friend. So I think she's conflicted and can't do the simple and obvious thing."
By the way, where was the dream sequence in this film? It was a famous moment in the comic; Peter dreams of the red-and-blue suit and the black suit fighting for control of Parker, as he tries to flee. And Raimi directing? Would have been great, but I guess not...
You’re forgetting that Spider-Man, Peter, literally kissing Gwen in front of MJ is a very legitimate source of jealousy. She isn’t as petty as you’re making her out to be. If you think about it, she could be frustrated that she’s trying to pursue her own career and isn’t receiving the recognition for her efforts that Peter does, who was basically handed his powers. Also? It’s insane that if she is on actual BROADWAY, not just some little show, that she would be instantly fired! As if her not being mic’d properly is the reason the show was bad! She wouldn’t have gotten that far if she didn’t have serious skill, and tbh she was given the shaft the way she was written.
Nailed it with this review, dude! In the film when Peter decides not to tell MJ that Harry tried to kill him, I remember thinking "They should just break up right now, because clearly this relationship isn't going to work out."
I completely agree with everything you said. Here the things that bugged me that you didn't mention: 1. Tobey Maguire's corny opening voiceover 2. Tobey Maguire's smug acting during Mary Jane's Broadway musical. 3. Peter Parker dancing/pelvic thrusting 4. Bruce Cambell and James Cromwell's acting 5. The fact that Flint turns into Sandman because the scientists were too lazy to check what was interfering with the particle accelerator.
I remember being super super young and going to see this and the only thing that was going through my mind was: "Wait, who's gonna be venom" because at first we have Gwen, I thought Gwen was actually going to get the suit and go after Peter. Maybe Peter rejects and humiliates her in front of that cafe and she goes to the church but gets the suit and goes after MJ. But I always knew Eddie was venom, but I thought that would've been too predictable if that makes sense. But to be fair, I love this movie. It was the first superhero movie I ever went to see in the cinema and I personally think it's a great conclusion to the trilogy.
Mary-Jane's problem isn't that she's jealous. She doesn't have jealousy in her first argument with Peter where she does give Peter all the information. She has a moment of jealousy, but she's supportive of his accomplishments. She doesn't get angry at him because she's jealous of him. She gets angry because his carelessness has left her feeling insecure. I have a dissertation about Mary-Jane, Harry and the villains in Spiderman 3: There’s a common thing against Mary-Jane in these that she’s awful and a bad character. That’s not really true. I’ve seen Spider-Man 3 used as an example for that. There are those that interpret them not liking a character as them being bad. Many female characters get this. I’ve come to the conclusion that women can’t have not nice emotions all the time and can’t have flaws unless they’re cute to some. Her flaws aren’t cute and don’t make her an automatic great girlfriend for Peter and his life as Spider-Man. She’s not fully accepting of the fact that her relationship with him isn’t exactly working because of the responsibilities he has. She doesn’t blame him for this, but she doesn’t like it either. It causes problems in their relationship. Which is kind of the point. Her poor review: She’s accused of being mean and a swear word in this scene. But Peter is doing what she gets angry at him for doing. Being self absorbed, only concerning himself with his own situation, not taking any time to give any real thought to hers. He makes her situation about his situation and how he triumphs over it. That’s apart of Peter’s character arc in the movie: Him being arrogant and self-centered. She’s in a temperamental place at this point, because her issues with her father are being brought to the surface, so she doesn’t react to this with much patience. They don’t get a chance to have a real conversation about it because he has to go and she doesn’t berate him for it. She just doesn’t say anything, because she wants to have a conversation with her boyfriend, but her boyfriend has a job and he can’t put her ahead of his job to do that. Her insecurities: This puts Mary-Jane in a bit of an insecure place no girlfriend wants a boyfriend that’s consumed by his job and doesn’t have time for her, but she can’t tell him that because he has responsibilities that are more important than her problems. She can’t express herself to him because he’s in such a good place and has bigger responsibilities than her and she feels bad because she isn’t and she does want someone to be able to talk to. This is where the counterpoint of her and Peter’s character arcs are: Her insecurity and his arrogance. This leads her to be able to talk to Harry, who is a clean slate for her at the moment. Mary-Jane does get jealous at seeing Peter being adored by the public while she is being rejected from her dream job. It’s a thing that happens with couples when one is more successful than another. It can make you feel like lesser than your mate. People don’t wanna feel like they aren’t good enough like that, especially someone who has already had that feeling for most of their life. Mary-Jane’s anger: Regardless of this Mary-Jane is supportive of Peter’s accomplishments. She doesn’t want to bring him down. Then Peter cheats on her, which makes her feel even worse about herself. I’ve heard some say that Peter was acting and that he doesn’t get onto her about kissing other guys when she’s acting, so why should she? But Peter isn’t an actor and Gwen isn’t an actress and Gwen wasn’t acting. She was kissing a superhero, along with doing so Peter did this while in the same position as he and MJ were with their kiss. I’ve seen again an argument against her saying that if it was their kiss then why she’d kiss John in a similar way in Spider-Man 2? But she didn’t know it was their kiss at the time because she wasn’t really knowledgeable about Peter being Spider-Man, so she couldn’t view it as anything special between her and Peter. But she doesn’t say anything against him about it and gives him the crap he deserves about it only when she discovers that not only does he have a personal relationship with the girl he cheated on her with that he never told her about, but that she also clearly has a crush on him and one that he obviously knew of himself. He had it coming. So they go on a break, but she goes to him regardless when she’s learns of his Uncle’s killer, and she does the one thing he couldn’t for her: She understands how he feels. And she has got him down to a tee. She knows exactly what he’s out to do: Go out and get himself some reckless stupid selfish vengeance. He blows her off, and she leaves because it’s no one’s job to coddle someone who doesn’t want nor will accept help. The Harry/Mary-Jane kiss: I’d go against Harry with the kiss before I’d go against MJ. Her and Peter are half-dead in the water and she’s in a messy place emotionally, while he’s not and is in best bud mode with Pete. But I don’t think it’s worth the time. Same with Pete gettin’ hot and heavy in the rain with his supposedly best bud’s girl in Spider-Man 1. All parties involved are to blame. I can’t hate one without hating all. Same goes for Peter trying to break up an engagement after he’s missed his shot in Spider-Man 2. MJ tells him she’s in a relationship, one that’s becoming more than companionship, she gives him a clear opening, and he doesn’t go for it, so she gives him a message that’s even clearer: She’s not waiting anymore, she’s gonna move on. Peter didn’t need to send her signals either after that, but he did. He point blank asked her out, an engaged woman, and she shut him down. The whole situation was unfortunate for everyone involved to be honest. But it’s something that happens all the time, and something that’s not really my place to judge her or Peter on. No matter what though, none of the things that have been listed against her come even close to Peter and Harry’s worst offenses: Actively making choices that they know will hurt or get someone killed in one way or another. Choices that THEY make, no one else. But Mary-Jane gets trashed for her lesser actions, but the male characters don’t really. Mary-Jane’s character arc: She really does have an interesting arc in this movie that kind of parallels Peter’s from Spider-Man 2. There Peter had to deal with the decision he made at the end of the last movie of being Spider-Man and dismissing anything else in his life. Mary-Jane here has to deal with her decision at the end of Spider-Man 2 of being Spider-Man’s girlfriend and how that effects her as a person. The movie doesn’t really sugarcoat it either. It’s not fun. We see her face her desire to have him when she can’t, his contact with other women, her insecurity at this and how successful he is and even with his life being threatened. She goes through a lot. She would’ve had a more interesting conclusion to her character arc, if there hadn’t been any producer requests to change the end of the movie. Originally, Eddie was going to kidnap Gwen and Peter would have gone to Harry for help and Harry would have rejected him. But Mary-Jane would have come and convinced him to help with that speech about forgiveness that was in the trailers, making her the mouthpiece for one of the main themes of the movie. But that got changed. Not to say that getting kidnapped is a bad thing for the character. It doesn’t hurt her as a person and isn’t her fault. She’s not superpowered. She a regular person. That’s what makes a developed character. But the kidnapping in this case had a bit of a stunting effect on the character in the movie. God bless you! God bless you all! God bless everyone!
If Spider-Man 3 had been a four hour movie, i betcha things would've had more time for development including Venom. Fitting so many characters and plot lines into a 2 hour & 20 minute film is very hard. With 4 hours, shit would've had more time
This is only on Spider-Man 3.1, the Editor's Cut. It's ridiculous how another person's vision with a film can change your opinion so drastically. The Editor's placement of scenes or removal of others help tremendously. And the score throughout was fanominal. Firstly I need to bring up the villains, Topher Grace's incarnation of Eddie Brock works for me. He initially parallels Peter's character in size, stature, and desires; stable job as a photographer, wanting to propose to his crush, etc, but then gets corrupted like Peter did, but then couldn't overcome the power. Next the Sandman, who's words filled with regret help Peter to finally forgive and let go, and who was also a nice inclusion to this film. Lastly, James Franco, who really brought it, and was a fantastic villain, and ally. I really like the look to Spider-Man's black suit, and how the symbiote was ruining Peter's life. I wish we would've gotten more information on it, like why it came to Earth, but if that meant meddling with the relationships and character work, than I'm good. It was also nice seeing more vengeful Peter again, with or without the whole black suit. I also really enjoyed the scene where Peter reexamines himself when he's happy about defeating, and believing he had killed Flint Marko, but Aunt May has essentially the complete opposite reaction to that news. All the drama, I feel is elevated to entertaining heights, thanks to the symbiote. Especially Peter's physical and emotional battles with Harry. I like the New Goblin's suit too, and when he himself reflects on this path he has taken and laments, it's really satisfying when he chooses to help Pete, and not simply because he was wrong about how his father died like in the Theatrical cut. I had a smile on my face when he called him that again in the climax. It's truly tragic Harry accepts death because of the monster he's become, both in ruining his friendship which also cost him part of his face, as well as the fact he'd probably still hear his father in his head, telling him to hurt others. It's a 9/10! And now I can say I'm happy enough eventhough we didn't get a Spider-Man 4, since I feel this does end the trilogy well enough and satisfyingly. I had a few gripes with this though, like how Peter seemed unrealistically self centered when he asks Gwen Stacy to kiss his alter ego at the Spider-Man parade, when he was planning to propose to the crush he's had since he was 6 years old , when he first laid eyes on Mary Jane. Sidenote, I haven't said this for each movie in this series, but the score for each was great, and Sam Raimi for sure is one of my favorite Superhero film directors now. I know that if he ever told another story with Dr. Conners, Bruce Campbell as Mysterio, or the Vulture, as initially planned, I would've really liked it. At the very least his way of making these films, and the relationship aspects.
I don’t feel like MJ is being completely selfish in this story. She treats Peter like he’s being insensitive because he IS being insensitive. That’s his new character flaw. All the fame and adoration he receives as Spider-Man has gone to his head and he’s become so full of himself that he thinks he can openly kiss another woman without hurting his girlfriend’s feelings. How is that not being insensitive? Yes, it was a mistake for MJ not to tell him about being let go from the show but it’s a perfectly understandable emotional response given the aforementioned circumstances. She’s in a vulnerable place and feels that her boyfriend is too obsessed with his own life to give her the support she needs. Meanwhile, Peter is left confused and frustrated at not knowing how to fix the situation as he has inadvertently alienated the love of his life to the point where she’s stopped communicating with him. This is relatable human drama, people. The movie they clumsily built around it doesn’t ultimately work but in my opinion the relationship subplot mostly does.
New York is not supposed to love Spiderman, except for a very small minority of people whom he's personally saved. He's not supposed to have the opportunity for his ego to go nuts like it did in this one. The story has always been about how much it sucks to be Spiderman. And when he got the black suit his inner frustrations about being scorned (under both identities) after all he goes through for people are finally let out. BUT... that's not the way it happened in the movie. It took our lovable geek suffering in silence and turned him into kind of a douchebag before he even came in contact with the suit. One problem with the series in general was that it suffered from post-911-itis. Like they felt the need to pat NYC on the back with a "there, there", making its citizens into well-meaning Spiderman supporters instead of apathetic ingrates who believe every bad thing they read about him in the Bugle. And the trend has continued even into the reboot. How many years have to pass before it's "okay" to paint New Yorkers in a negative light again? Because you kinda have to do that in order to stay true to the story.
I understand that you didn't like that it was different from the comics but it makes more sense the way it happens in the movie. In the first film everybody hates Spiderman due to the Bugle but as the story goes on people start to realize that he's not the bad guy. A great example of this is when aunt May tells Spiderman "I had a wrong idea about you" and its because even though the Bugle has great influence on people in NYC they start realizing that he's actually a hero. When he quits being Spiderman the crime rate gets a lot higher and people start to realize that he's a good guy. The symbiote is supposed to amplify the characteristics of its host so it makes sense that he would turn into an arrogant person if he was already a bit cocky.
+unknown unknown Peter in Spider-Mann 3 wasn't being a douche either, he became arrogant due to the fame New York gave him and he had the feeling of self importance, Tobey Maguire himself addressed that in many interviews.
I love your videos.i love how u go very in depth with the movie u review.and even if the movie is bad and u don't like it.you don't go off on an epic rant on the movie.you don't yell at the top of your longues.i like that.great review
I pointed that out when I saw the movie on Opening Night.; I was expecting him to be over-sized like he is in the comics, as well. As far as his over-all appearance in the movie, I didn't like that about Venom.
@skyhime It'll be a while. My general rule of thumb is two years after a movie's release, to let the film sink into the public consciousness, but as I run out of films, I may lax that some. -Captain Logan
I have a feeling that if this was two movies, it would've been better. Movie one could have the black suit and Sandman, as well as MJ leaving him for a good reason for Harry while he has amnesia. Movie two could have Peter trying to kill Harry, him getting MJ back, more development for Eddie, and both could have the black suit a little more of a serious thing.
Man, they need to release a extended version of Spider-Man 3 or Spider-Man 3.1. I think if they did release those deleted scenes and or extended scenes, it'll actually help the movie.
Heja wolf 0602 Movie will still have problems and you'll still have the cheesy dance sequences, but at least an extended cut will really explain things more
The best idea i can think of is somehow he went to Captain Stacy, and was asking him or maybe even Gwen (his fling that Parker stole from him, even though Eddie wanted more of the relationship, when Gwen was just there for a date.) about William Baker/Flint Marko, and he got the info. OR he snuck ito the Bugle or looked online for it.
ok i just relised something, in spider-man 1 normen ozborn keeps pulling up the eyes of the goblen mask to reveal his real eyes in order to be able to show emotion besides just his voice and mannerisms, and that to me is very similar to venom peeling back his face. and now the venom face peeling thing makes a little more a sence i think.
I've always thought that Harry's sacrifice was just to show how much he truly cared for Peter (i.e. something about no greater love than laying down one's life for his friends).
S-M3 should of been about the Lizard, The shuttle Crash, Peter getting the Symbiot & battling his ego & the Lizard. Introduction of Eddie Brock & his pursuit of finding out who the Lizard is. Peter getting rid of the Symbiot, final battle with the Lizard, post credits Eddie getting the Symbiot,Venom tease,End Movie! S-M4 Venom introduction!!
i think in this the suit is supposed to be like a fungus more than anything else when it bonds with its hosts it boosts their aggresion plus villains names are hardly utered any more like black out whiplash and and venom
@dmrain94 I can see why you took issue with 2-- I didn't care for the moping either, but I still think the story is well crafted and it's doing some creative things thematically. 3 doesn't work but it's certainly entertaining, at least in several places, and you're right that it was nice to get a movie paced a little faster-- it just goes too far the other direction, I think. Thanks for the comments! -CL
I love this review. Although, Captain Logan, I do have some superhero-related questions: 1. Did you like Anne Hathaway as Catwoman 2. Are you going to review the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man? 3. Did you like Anna Paquin as Rogue 4. Should Emma Watson have played Kitty Pryde 5. Me and my friends are writing a "what if" story if superheroes DID exist in the real world. We only have three super-powered villians and four powered heroes. Everyone else has no powers. Is that good? Please respond.
Damn, Logan, you NAILED it, but what kinda bugs me is that he/Pete dosen't even feel kinda guilty for Eddie's death, but forgives Sandman and Harry. HE had the suit, whch drove him along with his own revenge against Sandman for Ben's murder, and he outed Brock for his lie,and he broke the camera leading to Brock being a scumbag. I'm not saying Eddie isn't an innocent here too, just one of my gripes. Brock, should have been a little shady, but not so scumy earlier on.
They should have just made Harry as the main villian. 1. You have a sympatheic villian 2. An already established person so no origin story 3. Accents the theme of forgivness.
Like cole christie said; how do you even know that Peter knew about Flint Marko's dying daughter when Peter only knew that he was the man who murdered his uncle (until the end of course, when Marko explains to Peter what exactly the situation was.)?
I thought this movie was very enjoyable but i cant help but feel disappointed at all the wasted potential. Honestly, all they had to do was make this whole third movie about peter's decent into his dark side with the symbiote and then end the movie with the birth of venom as its cliffhanger. I feel like the main villian for the third movie should have been the symbiote; with the primary focus being the chaos it causes in peters life. Harry should have been the co-villain, his arc working in tandem with the symbiote and being resolved by the end of the film (whether he lived or died), setting things up for a spiderman 4 were the main villain would have been venom while setting up that movie for Dr.Connors to become the lizard in a potential fifth installment, Why the people behind the third installment think this through is beyond me
@Geekvolution By the way, when Spidey rescues Gwen, he never goes back to stop that crane. So, is it still going? Is it still going crazy throughout the picture and the end credits, and no one cares? Just a thought; great job, as always.
It depends, I mean Venom was only in the last 10-20 minutes of the film, so yeah I guess the end would've been more streamlined. Unless you mean the whole symbiote story, but I think that would've been needed to fully explore Peter's dark side. But as Captain Logan said: "Less is more" for this film. And I totally hear you for the new series!
In the comics Harry was taking drugs as well as the goblin stuff so i think it is believable that harry would develop a similar state of mind as his father
Another note on Spidey's origin: The 1st movie established that Uncle Ben died because of Peter's refusal to act responsibly with his powers. The 3rd one TRIES to completely rewrite that backstory to overcomplicate Sandman, and yes, I do see how Peter could have still indirectly caused Uncle Ben's death. However, given how Uncle Ben's death ACTUALLY played out, practically ANYTHING that could have caused Sandman to flinch could have indirectly killed Uncle Ben. Unnecessary change, IMO.
Is it wrong that i think the movie could have ended when eddie is at the church, the symbiot falls on him and then he lunges at the camera? That would have at least save him for another movie. Abd maybe dont put sandman in the movie but just have harry, because if u put sandman in the movie it would b a difficult battle because i persinally dont think peter could beat harry and sandman
Great review - this movie is definitely better than what people make it out to be. BTW,after the jazz club scene why does Peter put the black suit on so he can go to the church ...and take it off again?Always seemed a little strange to me.I guess it's because he wanted to cleanse himself by removing it in a holy place, but that would have made more sense if he was wearing the suit in a previous scene to begin with, where he does something that makes him realize what he was becoming.
@movieman6456 i hadnt thought of that... its just that when i think of Carnage, i think of there being alot of gore, but thats not really necessary i guess
Awesome SR. I have to say I agree. Harry's story and Peter's struggle with the black costume are the most essential parts of the film, and it could have been much better had it focused on that. For my part, I enjoyed the Harry amnesia, if only because it was nice and poignant to see Peter and Harry as friends again, knowing full well that it simply can't last.
i really dont get why people keep saying spiderman 3 is the worst and that that it made people want to kill themselves . Spiderman 3 had the better action, visuals, special effects and cgi than any of the other spiderman movies including the new ones, i thought spiderman 3 was a great film and im happy it came out like that. The only staff i dont like in the film is the relationship between peter and mary jane they spent 2 movies tying to get together and at the end of the 2nd film they do but in the 3rd on they just break up, the writers didnt explain why peter kissed gwen and then at the resturant he didnt know what he did wrong.so yh thats the only thing i dont like in spiderman 3 but other than that its a great movie, the whole point of a film is to enjoy it and not get bored of it and spiderman 3 does that you will never get bored of the film i watched it 10 times and i still havent change my mind about it.
Committing suicide over this movie is a bit dramatic. I think a lot of the problems stems from the characterization of everyone. If you like it great, but I loathe this film for so many reasons. Venom is probably one of the primary complaints of this movie. Topher Grace was a bad pick as Eddie Brock. He didn't look very muscular or intimidating to me and that's coming from a guy who used to be afraid of Venom. They should have gotten a body builder type guy to play him. Oh I hate Gwen Stacy in this one. She seemed like the typical girl that complicates the relationship of the protagonist. Also, why the hell wasn't she used first and then killed off so MJ could be brought in? Sorry, starting to get into ranting mode, I apologize. Sandman's sob story felt tacked on to me. I always remembered Sandman just going on a crime spree, not committing crimes for his daughter. I think most of the movie should have been Peter descending into darkness, succumbing to violent acts through the symbiote (or black suit, whichever you prefer). It could have been a dark movie if it followed that. Perhaps he roughs up a thug more than he usually does or lift something extremely heavy over his head (a truck, bus, or a train, yes I said train) and threaten to drop it on someone. Or hell, hang someone over a building from his webbing.
***** Do you think Spider-Man 3 could have worked better had they introduced the black suit in Spider-Man 2? And instead of introducing Sand Man, they just focused on Harry Osborne as the main villain, with Venom used in it in the same capacity that Two-Face was used in The Dark Knight?
***** I mean, if Venom "HAS" to be in Spider-Man 3. It probably would have worked better if they stuck with Harry Osborne as the villain. Aside from special effect sequences, Sand Man really brought nothing to the table.
jstephenj For me, the black suit was probably meant for the third movie because I don't see it fitting for Spider-Man 2's tone. Harry could have made a great Venom. I mean, he hates Peter/Spider-Man and it would make sense for the symbiote to bond to Harry, amplifying his hatred and give him knowledge on Spider-Man's techniques and nullifying his spider-sense would give him an edge. Plus, when Peter "kills" the symbiote, there could be an end credit scene where a small spec of it survives and all it takes is a small drop and it's back.
they should make a "spiderman 4" combined with "the amazing spiderman" like all those times in the cartoons where there were Parallel universes that combined all spider-men together and explain everything there.
I feel like the Amazing Spider-Man series saw Spider-Man 3 and decided to amplify everything that was wrong. 1) Venom only getting 15 minutes of screen time. Heck! Let's give the Rhino a 2 minute cameo at the end. 2) You thought Peter Parker looked too emo? Well let's make him am emo skateboarder who complains all the time. 3) You think Spider-Man has to save MJ too much. Why don't we make Gwen save Spider-Man even more! 4) Does Spider-Man 3 have rushed villain motivations. Why don't we make the villains even more rushed. Electro will become evil cause Spidey forgot his name, Harry will just find everything he needs in a lab. And we don't even give the Rhino a motivation. 5) By 2014 you think SM3 has slightly outdated CGI. Let's make TASM2 look like a cheap video game. The fans will love it!
when you say: "Venom dosen't say ... like in other adaptations" what do you mean? Can you talk about the "Spectacular, Spectacular Spiderman!" in any review? it's an awesome show.
spider-man 3 is visually stunning. I appreciate the film more than most people purely because as a filmmaker i appreciate how technically great it is from a visual and sound design perspective.
Well in the DVD they gave this spinoff comic on venom to show what they couldn't put and I wished they had put in in the movie like when Eddie was in the suit and complaining I'm his mind how cold it was and his head was hurting from all peters memories. It also showed venom going into some apartment I think and finding out about sandman before he met him
Did you know that when Sam Raimi first did Spider-man 3 he wanted to add Vulture instead of Venom. So, Instead of focusing the movie on Sandman & Harry I'm assuming the movie would've focus more on three villains instead (just like this movie) .
@Geekvolution Yeah I agree that Cambell and James Cromwell didn't give terrible performances, they were just out of place. Btw, this is only the third review I've seen of Geekvolution and I gotta say - this is the best RUclips channel I’ve seen that deals with comic book movies, pop culture etc. It's great to see smart and open minded analytical reviews that talk about theme and characterization, as opposed to 20 minute rants on why they hated it. I look forward to more reviews!
To be honest I actually think besides the praying scene I like ramis take on venom making him an anti peter in every way his look, his sense of humor that is very similar to peters but even darker, and that his relationship with gwen stacy is a very creepy stalking version of peters relationship with mj .ps I love how eddie stalks gwen like clark stalks lana in smallville
As goofy as this movie is it ends on a really, really, somber note.
+PrimeVinyl Have you seen Sam's Review of this on Sam's Channel? Does he make a better review?
Yousuf Khan i have seen it, i cant recall much from it...but i think this review is better because it tries to understand the themes that the movie tries to express....
SUPERHERO REWIND: SPIDER-MAN 3 REVIEW
Captain Logan you are such a good movie reviewer. I want to write reviews the way you do. You inspire me.
I honestly think this movie is better than TAS and it' s sequel
SM3 is WAY better.
+Vader200591
Do you have any concrete evidence of that?
GameStation3 it's pretty common knowledge that the amazing spider-man was only made so sony could keep the rights to spider-man.
Noah Baldwin
So? That doesn't mean the movie itself can't be enjoyed.
GameStation3 yeah but i wouldn't like the movie either way.
I hate the fact that Peter took the time to listen to what the Sand-Man was saying about Uncle Ben while Harry was bleeding out the entire time...
Good point. Didn't even think about that.
I figured he was already dead
Get rid of sandman, Introduce symbiote costume and eddie brock but do not turn them into venom until the next film, make harry the villain. Do NOT break up Peter and MJ and have them face a REAL relationship issue in an adult manner. BAM already a better plot.
Spiderman 3 should've centered the story around Peter and Harry and the Venom origin (the origin only) as a subplot
Spiderman 4, that never happened, should've been Peter and Harry teaming up to fight Venom (and Venom only)
Great review! I love how you deep you go into your reviews, and really analyze them. You've started changing the way I see superhero films. Keep 'em coming, Cap
What I like about Captain Logan's reviews is that he always sounds optimistic no matter what movie he's reviewing.
I disagree with you.
*****
It's kind of hard for me to take someone's opinion of a movie seriously if they call it "a pile of shit."
*****
I know it's not literal, I'm not a moron.
Spider man 3 should have focused entirely on Harry as the main villain
People would have complained that it's a retread of the original
Spider-Man 3 should’ve focused on Sandman and Harry as the villains with Sandman being the main villain which was originally Raimi’s plan
Sub 4 u.
He seemed perfectly fine before.
It would’ve been if it weren’t for fucking Sony trying to squish him in there
@@brickraiderproductions7426 Raimi wanted to do Harry, Sandman and the Vulture in 3, his movie would have probably been pretty overstuffed even if the studio hadn't pushed for Venom.
@@Xehanort10 The big problem with that is a lot of viewers wouldn't want Goblin II, let alone just Goblin II, in the third movie, too soon after the first movie-and especially given the criticism of the first movie Goblin's costume.
I completely agree.
Y'know what I'm looking forward to? Your "Rocketeer" Rewind. Now THAT's a great Superhero Movie.
"This doesn't make sense".
LOL you had me rolling at that part.
Sandman never asked for forgiveness, he said so himself, he said "I'm not asking you to forgive me, I just want you to understand."
Except it still ignore the big issue of mary jane not telling peter about being fired for some reason and also her being unfair and petty.
I think he was talking to peter when he said "you helped me through high school"
can you do a review of the amazing spiderman id like your opinion on that one
Been listening to you for years and years. Gotta hand it to you Cap, you really deep dive into things. (Obviously)
Take care man
can you review spectacular spiderman tv series...unless you've done that then link please!
why does the Venom suit get the white spider, but Spider-man doesnt?
They should have cut it up into two movies.
The newspaper article reads, "Spider-Man Shows His True Colors" In Superman III(1983), Ross Webster's sister tells Superman that he's "showing his true colors".
Well on the bright side, I can safely say it's no longer the worst Spider-Man movie released in theater's.
Unfortunately...I can't say that. SM3 is still by far the worst Spider-Man movie in theaters.
FlareKnight TASM2 stole that inglorious title.
In terms of Action, SM3 surpasses TASM 2 by far especially in terms of the final battles (Whether it's the power plant fight which looks like a video game cutscene or the Spidey/Goblin fight where most if it is spent in deadlock)
Rosemary Harris completely leaves Sally Field in the dust in terms of Aunt May portrayals, It helps that in Spider-Man 2, She actually got things to do aside from compete for Peter's attention with his dead boring parents and the pointless nurse sub-plot.
Your reviews are fantastic, so in-depth.
Sam Raimi didn't want The Vulture to be in Spider-Man 3, Ben Kingsley and John Malkovich were being considered for The Vulture for Spider-Man 4.
Ah, my first Superhero Rewind. I'll never forget it. (In a great way.)
Nailed it with this review, dude!
In the film when Peter decides not to tell MJ that Harry tried to kill him, I remember thinking "They should just break up right now, because clearly this relationship isn't going to work out."
I hope you have thoughts on "Spider-Man 3: Editor's Cut" that was just released, Cap.
Mindd Kidzag I just bought it! I'll try to do a short discussion soon
Can't wait. :)
I completely agree with everything you said. Here the things that bugged me that you didn't mention:
1. Tobey Maguire's corny opening voiceover
2. Tobey Maguire's smug acting during Mary Jane's Broadway musical.
3. Peter Parker dancing/pelvic thrusting
4. Bruce Cambell and James Cromwell's acting
5. The fact that Flint turns into Sandman because the scientists were too lazy to check what was interfering with the particle accelerator.
10:41 "U mad bro?" hahahahahhahahahaha rofl
I have a dissertation about Mary-Jane, Harry and the villains in Spiderman 3:
There’s a common thing against Mary-Jane in these that she’s awful and a bad character.
God bless everyone!
do all movies get 2/4?
If Spider-Man 3 had been a four hour movie, i betcha things would've had more time for development including Venom. Fitting so many characters and plot lines into a 2 hour & 20 minute film is very hard. With 4 hours, shit would've had more time
Or maybe the screenplay should have been written better. This isn't an epic that needs to be 4 hours.
Film isn't even out yet man, give it and the others that'll follow a shot. I'm interested in having a future discussion about this lol
Favorite line of the movie.
Dr Conners: I've never seen anything like it
10 seconds later
Dr.Conners; It has the characterisitcs of a sybote
In the comics, the symbiote never influenced Peter's emotions. That characteristic of the symbiote was taken from Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
Thats still being a douche.
I love your videos.i love how u go very in depth with the movie u review.and even if the movie is bad and u don't like it.you don't go off on an epic rant on the movie.you don't yell at the top of your longues.i like that.great review
"Now I know this is a long review" Oh past cap knows nothing of how far he could go.
After watching Hitop Films review of this movie I needed to watch an actual proper review of it.
I really like when people actually look at a movie instead of saying
"IT SUCKS"
"why?"
".....Becuase"
I have a feeling that if this was two movies, it would've been better. Movie one could have the black suit and Sandman, as well as MJ leaving him for a good reason for Harry while he has amnesia. Movie two could have Peter trying to kill Harry, him getting MJ back, more development for Eddie, and both could have the black suit a little more of a serious thing.
Man, they need to release a extended version of Spider-Man 3 or Spider-Man 3.1. I think if they did release those deleted scenes and or extended scenes, it'll actually help the movie.
Heja wolf 0602 Movie will still have problems and you'll still have the cheesy dance sequences, but at least an extended cut will really explain things more
Wowzie I already signed the petition like about a year ago lol
Wowzie Yay!
Have you seen the editor's cut Cap ?
ok i just relised something, in spider-man 1 normen ozborn keeps pulling up the eyes of the goblen mask to reveal his real eyes in order to be able to show emotion besides just his voice and mannerisms, and that to me is very similar to venom peeling back his face. and now the venom face peeling thing makes a little more a sence i think.
Noticed how all 3 posters have a orange background???
@27studios yeah...it could still be chaotic and bodycount filled but it wouldnt have gore
I've always thought that Harry's sacrifice was just to show how much he truly cared for Peter (i.e. something about no greater love than laying down one's life for his friends).
Captain Logan, when are you going to review Spider-man no way home?

I love this review. Although, Captain Logan, I do have some superhero-related questions:
1. Did you like Anne Hathaway as Catwoman
2. Are you going to review the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man?
3. Did you like Anna Paquin as Rogue
4. Should Emma Watson have played Kitty Pryde
Makes me wonder what the tone of the reboot's going to have....
@Samuel24842 he did a comic book late night featuring tina and daniel
Eddie: "God Please kill Peter Parker"
Lisa: "You can't ask God to kill people!"
Homer: "Yeah! Do your own dirty work."
Your reviews get better and better with each new installment of Superhero Rewind!! I can't to listen to what you have to say for The Incredibles.
you should do a " Tom Hardy as Bane, Anna Hathaway as Catwoman - First Thoughts" Vid
I really enjoyed this film, but now I have a better insight into why many dislike it. Thanks!
Aside from special effect sequences, Sand Man really brought nothing to the table.
jstephenj spiderman 2 had a perfect story it didnt need the symbitote.
jstephenj For me, the black suit was probably meant for the third movie because I don't see it fitting for Spider-Man 2's tone. Harry could have made a great Venom. I mean, he hates Peter/Spider-Man and it would make sense for the symbiote to bond to Harry, amplifying his hatred and give him knowledge on Spider-Man's techniques and nullifying his spider-sense would give him an edge.
Plus, when Peter "kills" the symbiote, there could be an end credit scene where a small spec of it survives and all it takes is a small drop and it's back.
i've been waitin for this one :D
That intro was priceless
they should make a "spiderman 4" combined with "the amazing spiderman" like all those times in the cartoons where there were Parallel universes that combined all spider-men together and explain everything there.
+TheChickeninspector Well...Spider-man 3 has the biggest box office in the series.
The gwen thing is the complete opposite of what you said.
Glad to see that I'm not the only one who thinks they should've saved Venom for a fourth movie.
@stitch99 Hahahahahaha Eddie was too attached to the symbiot LMFAO he had it on for what like 2 minutes LOL..
when you say: "Venom dosen't say ... like in other adaptations" what do you mean?
Can you talk about the "Spectacular, Spectacular Spiderman!" in any review? it's an awesome show.
spider-man 3 is visually stunning. I appreciate the film more than most people purely because as a filmmaker i appreciate how technically great it is from a visual and sound design perspective.
This movie should be used as the definitive example of how NOT incorporate multiple villains in a superhero movie.
2:08 The Lion King 2 simba's pride is my example for sequelitice.
