When playing Platinum, it felt like grass was just as rare as fire for anything that you could get pre-nationaldex. For fire, I remember you could get the starters and Ponyta before the first gym, Houndoor before the fourth gym, and Magmar before the fifth. Whereas Roselia and Cherub were the only two grass mons besides the Turtwig line, and I think Roserade is the only good one besides Torterra

Really minor thing but during gen 5, you said the venipede duo instead of trio, but this is a great video, I mean it also adds to what i believe regional variants are for which is balancing types in their current generation and in their original generation, notice kanto, and johto have multiple regional ghost types, addition of a dragon and more type variety from ice which is essentially water in gen 1

It's also worth considering what the overall balance of the Pokédex is as generations go by, which type is rarest across the whole Pokédex in each gen. Naturally, that stays the same in the first two generations, though by gen III Ghost has fallen behind, as Dragon got more additions then. These days, Ice is the least common overall - an impressive feat considering Fairy was introduced five generations later, even if 22 Pokémon did have their types changed when it was introduced.
All in all, Ice definitely feels like the hardest type to encounter in most games, reflecting that overall obscurity. It's hurt a lot by being difficult to encounter until late in the game, particularly for new Pokémon. You mentioned Crabrawler being common, but in Sun & Moon the area to evolve it is literally Victory Road, meaning you can't get the only new non-regional variant Ice type until the end game. It's rare enough that the Coastal dex in Kalos didn't have a single Ice type, the only time in the main series that a Pokédex has missed a type that existed at that time.

I'll never get why they constantly make ice types so late-game.
Gen 1 was tragic anyways. Gen 2? After the seventh gym. Gen 3? Same. Gen 4? 7th gym. Gen 5? 7th gym I think? Gen 6? Frost Cave is after the sixth gym iirc. Gen 7? Tapu Village iirc. Gen 8? Icirrus is super late again (but the wild area at least mitigated it a bit). Gen 9? Yup, endgame area.
There is a reason rock is nearly always early game when normal type moves are used - it's otherwise shit defensively. While being worse defensively, ice type gym leaders are always late-game, I think there's not a single ice type gym leader who's earlier than... slot 7? Or E4?

It should be noted that Gen 2 almost perfectly updates Gen 1 Dex in how it works with stats and types.... and with how Johto is so connected with Kanto, it feels almost like it's a connected region and the dex just more so completes Kanto rather than exists on it's own.....
And I actually appreciate the lack of fire types in Gen 4. Sinnoh is a colder region. It makes sense that fire types aren't suited for the region.... so it's lacking....
Also, it should be noted that while a type is rare for a generation, it doesn't mean it's rare for a region.

@@edgargaebolg9307 yeah, GameFreak seems a bit ‘confused’ when it comes to the rock and ground types, i still have no idea why they decided to make runerigus ground/ghost instead of rock/ghost, and why galarian corsola/cursola and houndSTONE are all pure ghost types.
I doubt they will ever do this, but i feel like if they are gonna adjust the types in the type chart ever again someday, rock and grounds could easily be merged into one type and they can name it the ‘terra type’ or something like that, but that would put us on an odd number of types again, so that would probably never happen. I do hope both rock and ground get some more love in the upcoming generations!

I feel you erred by skipping Hisui. Maybe you're right that it should be counted separately from Galar despite being from the same generation, but the title of the video explicitly says rarest types by generation, not rarest types by region. Hisui is part of the 8th gen and should thus be counted with it- which is the simplest way. Even if it _was_ by region, it should be counted as an extension of Sinnoh- though that might be a little tricky since none of the "new" Pokémon are new evolutionary lines, they were all regional variants and regional evolutions of Pokémon not native to Sinnoh in gen 4 (with the exception of Sneasel). Point is, it either needs to be counted as part of Sinnoh or part of gen 8, has to be one or the other, you can't do neither. Maybe Hisui should just be counted as its own region, past gen carryovers and new mon just lumped together in the total. And when Legends Z-A comes out you're going to have to account for it too.
