How Narcissists Took Over the World

  • Narcissists are suddenly everywhere. Thanks in part to Donald Trump’s media diagnosis, Narcissistic Personality Disorder has overtaken ‘psychopath’ and ‘bipolar’ to emerge as our number one label for others’ psychological failings.
As part of the Chosen Ones series, Gavin Haynes attempts to peel the pop back away from the psych, and see what’s left.
He visits the experts, quizzes the RUclips gurus, hangs out with the well-varnished girls dating on hotties-only site BeautifulPeople.com, and the support groups for the victims of the narcissists, all the while hunting for a real-life narcissist.

      DreaminBut NotBelievin
I never implicated any of that.
But you can clearly tell that he has found a way to market his narcissism. He also never said he's any different from other narcissists or believes he's any better, but of course narcissists in general think they are better than other people, including other narcissists, hence the name.
My point is that he only does all of that to feed into his narcissism and garner even more attention (just look at the mails he sent) and have a larger stage to present himself on, it's a calculated, selfish move. I think to him morality is only - if even - secondary.
If you don't believe that, then you should listen to him and what he has to say about the behaviour of narcissistic people again.
I'm not saying that's wrong or bad. It's just an observation.

    • @KillFeed669

They are two types of people, people who are full of themselves for being the general idea of attractive. Good looking, rich, popular etc and then there are people who are full of themselves for the exact opposite reason. For being intelligent, "morally superior" etc The only difference between the two is typically the latter works harder, and that's where they get the idea that they are better, that's what they pride themselves on. Not that there's anything wrong with being proud of your achievements. I've just noticed over my lifetime that the people who have problems with boxes are the people who don't fit in them.

Here is a list of what Abusers/Narcissists usually do to their targets :
    - Insults their target very often. Then lie when confronted about it, or say it was a joke.
    - When confronted with their behavior, they pretend to be innocent and play the victim.
    - Everything is always your fault, even when it's obviously not.
    - They always have a justification for every bad thing they do. They think they're always right.
    - Very controlling, they tell you how to live, but they can live anyway they want. Very hypocritical.
    - They accuse you of what they're doing to you (RED FLAG!), it's called Projection.
    - Portraying themselves as angels outside, when they are actually demons with their family and especially their target.
    - They want you to fail, while pretending to want you to succeed (they're very convincing).
    - They never say they are sorry for hurting you (RED FLAG!).
    - Poison your favorite activities, they don't want you to be happy or to get pleasure. They also poison other useful activities like important skills which will help you in the future. They DO NOT want you to have skills, they want you to be as weak as possible. They don't teach you anything.
    - Subtly lead a smear campaign against their target, so they isolate it and make sure they don't get help.
    - When you want to leave the relationship with a narcissist, they beg you to stay with them and cry crocodile tears. They are the best actors.
    - Sometimes nice, sometimes cruel. You never know where you stand with them.
    - They pretend to be "victims", and they blame the target for their own behavior.
    - They are incredibly arrogant and sadistic. They see the target as weak, and deserving to suffer.
    - They think they are models to be followed.
    - They are spiritually dead although they might loudly profess some kind of Spiritual Belief.
Please share this message to other people and forums. We have to raise awareness!

I agree with this, great summary! Only through learning about narcissism more have I realised that I used to be a strong narcissist even as a child. Thankfully I've changed and become a more balanced person. What it made me realise though is narcissists will never admit to being a narcissist because they never see themselves this way. Only by changing your character and having a different persepctive can you then realise that you were a narcissist.

My father was a text book narcissist and growing up I was abused by him. When I was a teen i started to show signs of narcissist myself but something changed in my 20's. I feel I grew as a person and learned to be empathetic of others. At times I find myself slipping back into that behavior and have to check myself . But at forty now I'm so glad i was able to be self aware of my treatment of others and to be more respectful.

if they act as expected then that is what they are. I look at actions I do not care for how they feel at any point. if the behavior is telling me this person is an NPD, then I know to stay clear of them, and limit my interactions with them, and even deprive them of key information about myself, such as my regular hangout spots, where I live, even the neighborhood, and if I can help it if they don't know my name or even full legal name I'll keep their asses in the dark. This is how I protect myself.

Mental health campaigns here in Australia always target depression but I think they need to target narcissists more. Each narcissist is out their preying on and using people in several different ways, surely creating more depressives in the process. I think they're the greatest psychological challenge for the human race because they prevent us coming together in collective ways and working towards a better society.

As a victim.. i believe it's up to us to form a worldwide movement for awareness. There are millions of us, and there always have been millions of us. Narcissism is in FACT more deadly than Ebola is but we don't see any warnings at all. And if narcissism doesn't kill, it maims, it mutilates, it harms, undermines, exploites, misleads, and has probably on a larger scale 'full spectrum' dominance over human beings through many of the institutions/instruments they developed over the centuries to maintain that possition. If we don't want humanity to change into stricktly predatorial creatures, we'll have to step in. Only victims have seen the TRUE face of narcissism in its horrible impact on our souls. I had seen lots of misery in my life before i became aware of narcissism. ALL OTHER SHIT IN LIFE DWARFS in comparison to narcissism.

I grew up with a Dad who has NPD and because of that I myself have a few traits of narcissism but no more than anyone else. There’s a difference between loving yourself and admiring yourself. All too often in today’s world we’re encouraged to love ourselves but we’re never taught what that really means, so we end up creating a depiction of ourselves as someone we admire. The problem with this is of course as more and more people develop narcissistic tendencies and NPD the world we live in starts to become devoid of empathy and compassion, and recent historical and political events show that all too clearly.

    • @lipstickrose
      @lipstickrose Год назад

Narcissism in someone isn't preventable, because narcissists are basically demons in flesh. A demon can only possess a person while they're in low vibration. Everything now days is low vibrational. The news, alcohol, drugs, chemically processed packaged fast food, chemicals in pharmaceuticals etc. Everything is designed to keep us in low vibration, even our cell phones. Cell phone radiations affect our thinking, the way we think, our mood swings. 5G is very dangerous. Since 5G has been in place most people are facing isolation, depression, anxiety, insomnia and other health issues. We're being made vulnerable to the demonic realm by constantly being kept in low vibration. 6G is gonna be a complete memory wipe out. People are already having short attention spans due to 5G Hence, you can only imagine what 6G is gonna do right?

There are so many different types of narcissist, they don’t all behave the same, having being left by a Mari mother at the age of 4, passed around made sure I knew I was a burden, there was no love or empathy. I remember thinking at a young age that I would do my best in the world.
I did better than my mother and her sisters and they hated me for it.
My grandparents were the glue holding everything together, when they died, there was a disagreement about my auntie spending a fortune on some of my grandads money and not declaring it to probate. Narcissistic rage!
I went on to marry a malignant narcissist, about four years after I divorced him a grandiose narcissist swept me off my feet, that’s when I started research. I eventually met someone and honestly it took about a year for me fall for him, but I really believed he was my soulmate. He didn’t display any sign of the typical traits, after we split I watched a few videos, and it had a chart with all the different types but the covert narcissists are the absolute most sly, selfish, vile creatures..
    They all need locking up!

This is a fascinating video. Be glad you weren't accepted into "Beautiful People". Having been brought up by a narcissistic mother it led me into a series of relationships of narcissistic abuse. I guess I'm technically classed as a co-dependent, people pleaser. I learnt the people pleasing aspect in order to survive my mother's daily abuse. What I've learnt is that narcissists have no acceptance of their guilt. They themselves were generally abused, whether it was mentally, physically or sexually. The narcissistic may be arrogant, successful, charming at times they need to only know in themselves everything you are, they can never attain. Their jealousy towards you, someone they proport to love or as in most cases, feel they own is unmeasurable. There's not one type, just like all of us are different. It's hard to shake free from a narcissist and harder not to go back into further destructive relationships with another, especially if we've been raised and conditioned by one or worse two narcissistic parents. For me what helped was to step back, to understand I didn't ever have to explain myself or my accountability to anyone other than myself. To listen to people rather than talk. They lack remorse for their actions, lack empathy for others and above all, if they are truly clever ones, will mimic your behaviour in order to fool you. Best wishes to anyone who's experienced this or who has experienced this abuse. Be guarded. Be aware of sheep in wolve's clothing. x

Narcissism is just another learned behavior that we can conquer if we learn what really matters, which is not only the self. Once we find that we gain more happiness from understanding and helping others, we can stop thinking we are somehow superior. The more we learn, the less we know.

Right, because there are so many predatory narcissists out there who will become models of well-adjusted compassion once someone explains to them the error of their ways. What you don't realize is that for someone to be cured of a disease, first that person must *want to be cured.* He has to want to change himself for the better. In the handful of narcissists (including a few sociopaths) I've encountered thus far, I have never seen any will to do so.

I think narcissism is easiest to understand as part of the attachment spectrum. On one side you have anxiousness or dependence on others and on the other side you have avoidance and independence from others. Both ends of the spectrum represent states of insecurity either with themselves or others. In the middle you have vulnerability and interdependence based on a state of security or trust in both yourself and others. Typically someone who is operating in their relationships as a narcissist is someone who has internalized that others can not be trusted, other people will let them down, other people will exploit them and so forth such that they retreat into themselves to get all of their needs met alone. This kind of a mindset isn't entirely illegitimate, it can be appropriate in certain situations like in war, self defense, making decisions with authority, hunting animals for food and basically any situation that necessitates a win/loose scenario. However in cases that necessitate win/win scenarios like friends, family, lovers and business the true narcissist doesn't believe in this on a subconscious level. Therefor they end up creating a win/loose dynamic even when none is necessary. Their subconscious minds are fully committed to the win/loose game, kill or be killed. It's the defense instinct on overdrive.

Like Roman Bishop said, I think she just meant attractive people meeting other attractive people to create good looking children. On a somewhat different note, maybe there's an unconscious bias on the site against people of color due to the initial members being predominantly white. After all, some biologists think that people are just naturally more attracted to people of a similar skin tone, which makes sense, honestly. Like, from a natural selection standpoint, people with light skin are much more likely to get sunburns and such in a hot, sunny climate, hence they are somewhat less likely so survive. Of course, in the age of AC, that kind of thing is largely irrelevant.

I'm done feeling sorry for narcissists. What makes them incurable is their refusal to meditate and go within.
They gossip about people who have peace of mind, and treat peace of mind like a zero sum game.
As if, your choice to choose mindfulness is robbing them of their narcissistic supply.
They seek constant praise, and when they haven't gotten an absurd amount they start gossip, or start trouble with anyone they possibly can, including strangers in traffic, or people at a grocery store.
      Just literally anyone.
And all they have to do is sit with themselves and start meditating.
Ah, but then their inner narcissist will abuse them. They choose to abuse us before feeling that pain. Better we should all suffer than they should suffer.
Eventually, if they dealt with that pain, it would yield healing, but it would take years.
Scan the brain of lifelong meditators and you'll find increased empathy.

Nobody talks about it bc it’s like saying why don’t we talk about what it feels like to be a serial killer. They might have feelings but it doesn’t matter bc they’re too busy hurting people and feeling JOY from others misery so who cares what they feel. They do not change and the ones they hurt the most are the ones who’ve shown the most love towards them or that should be able to trust them. If that’s not evil I don’t know what is and you can’t bargain with evil or show it enough love to get it to change. You can’t reason with it or even threaten the. Bc their superior view of themselves leads them to believe they can get away with anything and mostly they do. Once discovered and known for sure they need to be put down like the dangers to humanity they are. We could do to learn how they come to be and educate people at a young age and we could pass laws to get these people off the streets and that might deter a few of them but what they don’t need is compassion or understanding. That’s like that grizzly bear guy who wanted to snuggle w them in the wild. Dude they’re grizzly bears and it does not good to ask why. You just have to see them for what they are and what they do and handle them as such or else you will likely be the next victim.

The line in the video that the usage of the term "narcissistic" is far out of line from the greek origin or Freud's discussion of the term is quite incorrect.
Modern research has shown, over and over and over and over again, that measured narcissism has been on the rise in the U.S. population for at least 50 years now.
The big culprit here is, without a doubt, the massive amount of media and marketing which espouses image and ownership as a replacement for real self-worth and fulfillment in life.

Honestly I know 4 narcissists in my life. It's sad really. There's one who's my exfriend and she always called herself perfect and hot pretty she also had all the traits of a narcisist and called me fat and ugly to make herself feel better
She was a psychopath for sure

I'm glad you're no longer friends with her.... You are far more beautiful than she is, I can tell you for sure, because no one truly beautiful would say what she said... The more secure and accepting you are of yourself, the more attractive you become. Women who think their value lies namely in their beauty are easily threatened by a friend who is more confident and has a stronger sense of self, no matter what she looks like.... God bless you!!!! You're clearly smarter than she is too!

The interviewer certainly didn't shy away from voicing his opinion. In his defense, many of us see and have seen Donald Trump as a flagrant narcissist for years. I remember long before Trump suggested that the first African American Person ever to be nominated by a major political party was not a US citizen; Trump was dangling money over the famous so he could get a hard on by telling them "You're fired".

  • @Stoney-Jacksman
    @Stoney-Jacksman 7 лет назад +11

4:52 hahahhaha that was so funny.
Btw people narcissists are very good at what they do, so you don't even feel (at first) they are using and manipulating you. But enough about Trump, this is more about the age we live in that encourages narcissism and makes it a good thing to be. They could have made this doc much much better, it's very basic.(vice) Vice is very good with an interesting title, but not delivering or covering what the title says whatsoever!
It shouldn't have focused so much on narcissistic personality disorder, but more about narcissism in general as becoming good traits to have and people getting admiration for having views, being superficial, being seen etc
All the youtube vlogs with people all wanting to be adored celebs, facebook,, instagram etc etc.. and the young kids growing up in this kind of world, where to them it even becomes more the norm than for the generation before them.
Easy to dismiss that by saying 'we all have narcissistic traits' duhhh, but its about those traits become larger and something that is admired in fact, labeling it as 'success'. That word manipulated so much that it has changed the world. And if you criticize anyone on their self admiration selling it to sheep that admire it (many times only they themselves wanting and working on becoming like those they admire) you will be called a 'hater'..another very manipulative and silly word, that holds a lot of power.
*But it seems nobody really is interested in the topic, but more into trump vs democrats..

  • @justmadeit2
    @justmadeit2 7 лет назад +2

Sometimes people fear getting old, losing their looks and feel unloved or unworthy, so to compensate they try and take the perfect photo of themselves, one where they look good, and put it on facebook etc, or take lots of photos of themselves , because they feel so bad about themselves and need that validation off other people. I did that for a while when i was on facebook, i wanted to get back with a woman i had broken up with and wanted to look my best, even when i knew we werent getting back together. It was pathetic stuff, but a bad time in my life casued me to become a bit obsessed. On the surface it looked like narcism perhaps, but it wasnt that i really thought i was great or amazing.. Although maybe i had some traits of it ? Self loathing and self obsession are close to each other i think

See Elizabeth Lunbeck's description of narcissism (in an interview on RUclips) and what distinguishes malignant narcissism from "healthy narcissism". Her book, The Americanization of Narcissism, speaks about the history of the intersection of psychoanalysis, capitalism, and how the term 'Narcissism' has slowly become an entirely negative label. Narcissus, the legendary myth who became addicted to staring at himself in a pond, hurt nobody and caused no dysfunctions. Contrary to this- malignant narcissists who slip through society like a shapeshifter or a manipulator- can cause much more damage and should be avoided at all costs.
