Britain's Illegal Rave Renaissance: LOCKED OFF

  • Rave Culture is one of Britain’s great cultural exports, but after its first wave in the late eighties and early nineties, it was soon forced into the underground by stringent new laws and superclubs. But forward 25 years into in the midst of a nationwide purge on the nation’s nightlife, where nearly half of all British clubs have shut down in the last decade, and a new kind of scene has emerged.
    Clive Martin investigates this 21st century version of Rave, where young people break into disused spaces with the help of bolt-cutters and complicated squatting laws, to suck on balloons and go hard into the early morning.
    But with the police using increasingly extreme tactics to clamp down on these parties, and more than one fatality causing nationwide media panic, can the scene survive?

    The girls from Liverpool said it best. The reason raves are coming back is because clubs now are all stuck up, people get too drunk and rowdy and no one lets them selves go, they stand awkwardly and take Snapchat's. Raves are actually fun, like clubs should be.

      At a RAVE we are responsible for each other.
      The older ones watch those who are not yet used to know their own limits, bring water or whatever it takes to make somebody who is in a bad condition feel comfortable again.
      It was like that - Always!
      This kind of unselfish acting is what Techno and music in general is made of.
      So stop beeing scared and talk about what could happen. Go there, have the best RAVE of your life, take care of the younger ones and revieve Techno to what it actually was in its early days.

    I'm 37 now and I haven't been to a proper underground rave since 2004, but those nights still remain my most wonderful and special memories. Two raves in particular really stand out "first two nights I tried MDMA and back when it was pure in 1999" The tracks that were played still stir up emotions I don't get from nothing else. It was all about love and feeling connected to everyone. The atmosphere was perfect, nobody took too much, everyone looked out for reach other, making sure you didn't get too hot or drink too much water, just perfect all around. I wouldn't trade those nights for anything!

      Word!! I have a few older friends who raved back in the 90's and then others who did when we were in HS in the early 2000's (I'm almost 32 now), and I wish that I had gone to them back then!! I've heard so many great stories from other OG ravers, I liken them to how the scene was when I first started raving back in '09..way more PLUR and music-oriented. The scene has always had its ebbs and flows, but it has DEF changed quite significantly over the last 10 years, ever since it's become more mainstream/legalized due to EDC and other EDM festivals..which don't get me wrong, I love festivals, I just miss underground illegal parties too lol..esp desert parties!

    VICE has done a fair job of capturing many different cultural phenomena, sometimes with impressive results. However, the magic and feeling of a rave is something that's impossible to put to words or capture on film, and I think this video only serves to underscore that point. The best parties will never be filmed, and it's for the best.

      YUP, in 88 the umbrella of rave drew in the 70s punks, rockers and hippies and falkland vets, it crossed 3 generations, it helped smashed hooliganism as mdma outsmarted cocoaine in a hearbeat , it does not discriminate in age, looks, gender, financial status, race, creed or being ugly/beautiful, you just gota want to be part of something outside of what we all keep being told to be in society. Fuckin rave on x

      Yeah, I went to several all over London and the surrounding areas. Usually in condemned office blocks that were security fenced, the laws at the time preventing officers from forcing entry. There'd be someone on the gate unlocking to let people in as they arrived. I went to one a few minutes walk from London Bridge station, but since it wasn't as residential then, people didn't care all that much about the noise and the buildings were usually pretty much gutted before anyone arrived, so there was no criminal damage. Just a soundsystem, a lot of people, and dealers lining the hallways lol. I never had a bad experience at any of the squat parties or forest raves I went to in the nineties and early 2000s before I moved out of London.
      The wealth divide is too big, the kids too skint, and they don't want to drink, or listen to the more commercial music in the club's. I'm lucky in that I live in Bristol and there are still a lot of good music venues here, some of them while not exactly drug friendly, do turn a blind eye, and there's a fair amount of musical diversity. But there's something about an illegal rave that's just so much more uplifting and euphoric, even without the drug aspects.

    It’s amazing how history repeats itself. The same thing happened in Sacramento at the turn of the century until promoters and cities realized how much money was involved and then you saw the big venues open up in San Fran and surrounding areas to capitalize and soon after the scene died. I imagine now it’s back underground. This all takes me back. I applaud the kids for taking it into their own hands and giving police a run for their money;)

      It's possible. But to get to that natural state without the initiation of drugs is probably hard. People are cowards in the beginning, so they do drugs to see themselves. There has to be a rolemodel or a teacher who knows all the steps.

    • @idote8243
      @idote8243 8 лет назад +11

    Awesome, glad to hear illegal raves are still happening. I enjoyed the late 80s early 90 raves. At the time, I never realised that I was part of a dawning culture and was just enjoying and living it. The excitement of being part of a dance trend is a buzz in itself, being at an illegal rave just heightens that excitement. People are always going to push the boundaries, its part of learning and growing and it creates some truly exciting memories based on an underworld culture. Raves are about acceptance and a joining of minds. Didn't matter who your were, where you came from or what you did for a living, you were all there for the same buzz. There are always going to be individual casualties in whatever risky activity you do. Give people the knowledge to enjoy it as safely as possible, because, it isnt going to stop them even if you create a culture of ignorance and more fatalities will occur due to the ignorance culture. Anyway, love it - Let's av'it! :-)

      "People have been gathering together in groups and transcending their pathological individuality through music and ritual since the beginning of time..."
      -JBP
      Just an excerpt from a conversation that I committed to memory that my late 90's and early 2000's rave scene experience(s) here in Detroit inspired. Even in such a City as Detroit which is said to be the birthplace of this genre, the vibe, the experiences, and the Love were, and still are the most beautiful and amazing memories I have of my youth. "Techno" and the heartbeat of Detroit's minimal techno and house music provided the soundtrack to my young life. Where I was once an acid tripping slam dance and mosh-centric teenager through the sonic energy nu-metal (rage against the machine, Korn, etc.) Provided my young soul, the beautiful heartbeat of this music genre and the chemical soup, of suburbanites and city dwellers alike, I was shown the love and belonging our current society cultures right the hell out of each individual that doesn't seek the deeper truths of our existence.
      Love these pieces ❤️

      Just an excerpt of a conversation that I committed to memory due to my underground rave scene Xperiences in the late 90's and early 2000's. Experiencing this level of love and understanding in an industrial wasteland and ghetto such as Detroit changed me forever.
      My most fondest memories of my youth were encapsulated in these short couple of years. The biggest danger in all of this is the youth with their rudementary understanding of the world and their place in it. Especially the level of responsibility that comes with the ingestion of such powerful psychedelics and empathogens. Then again, these are the experiences that once led me to drug oblivion, are the very same experiences that "cultured" me into the man I am today.

      I've been to plenty of real raves in my time. How would you know what I have or haven't done when you don't know the first thing about me. Again, this video is just thuggish idiot kids. Not the real rave scene at all. North of the Scottish border, things are very, very different and waaaaay more chilled out. Fannies like the ones in this video get kicked out or driven away and dumped in the middle of nowhere, very fast.

      Invite yourself. Go to a festival or something. You might have a good time and meet some people. It's pretty easy meeting new people when you're pissed.

    If this is so popular why not buy a big warehouse somewhere or a field and just hold them. Unless that isn't "underground" enough for you and is too much like a club.

    • @soulkiller3
      @soulkiller3 8 лет назад +2

      Yep there are plenty a both board raves. Raving is going strong in the uk, not like the 80`s but it never will. This is just kids wanting to start they own rave the wrong way.

      I say mainly cost. As soon as you want to do things legit, the costs start to skyrocket. Throw a rave in the forest.. people piss behind a tree. Create a venue, you need to provide facilities for a thousand people or more. Permits, Licences, By the time you finish installing the final emergency exit sign, after dotting every i and crossing every T, then pay for your insurance. You're into it for a metric fuckton of money. And for what? so a bunch of kids and no name DJ's can go and have a bit of occasional fun.. They aren't spending big cover charges to get in and they don't want to buy drinks.
      Drugs are definitely part of the issue too.. but thats another huge topic in itself..

      Don't know what it was like years ago but now there is Nothing pure about it. Sniffer dogs and police with UV lights waiting for taxis. Metal detectors on entry.
