      I’m also in my mid (to late) thirties and grew up seeing this guy kill it skateboarding. Getting older it’s really cool to see these guys who were legendary decades ago reinventing themselves and still being incredible after they shifted their focus to something completely different.
      People get older and even people that reach that level of success in something like skateboarding just can’t keep going with the expectation that their bodies will forever be in their peek. It’s really inspiring.

I did a lot of thinking and realized that there aren't really that many pros in the world, it's very rare to become pro and be well known... Think of how rare it is to know someone with a traumatic brain injury or who's died of a traumatic brain injury... Put that together. It's very rare that anyone ever hears or knows about pros, hitting their head and dying or hitting their head and having huge complications from it. I had to learn more firsthand than anything, but I also have known a few people who have had really bad head hits who were worse off than me. Now that there's some more names coming forward publicly about their injury histories and brain health, it's finally getting the attention it deserves.. along with pros like Andy McDonald and Andy Anderson who never put down the helmet. It's good to see helmets being more acceptable, I feel definitely more accepted wearing mine at the park. Nowadays. Skaters tend to be people who are big risk takers and people who keep things close to the chest, but when it comes to head hits and brain health, we got to open up.

    I never went pro, and I haven't finished the video, but I have survived multiple head slams, woken up in the hospital repeating myself, multiple ER visits for head sutures, blew my knee out and have sprained it a few times since ACL reconstruction, countless major ankle sprains, wrist borderline broken, dislocated fingers... All from skateboarding. I won't stop, but the battle is insane. I LITERALLY have had to step my skating back a good bit and swear by my helmet every time I ride just to be able to live happily and not scared I'm going to break my skull open or fold my knee again or anything that will kill me or have me in a bed for months. I've got people other than myself to live for, and that has become my new purpose. I still enjoy skateboarding and I'll never leave the scene, but reality becomes more than the dream at some point, and earlier for some than others. Arto has always been a huge inspo for me because I'm also a big guy that slammed harder than anyone I ever knew, & I've had photography/videography to fall back on as well. Take care of yourselves, and if you are prone to hitting your head, get over yourself, find a helmet you like and wear it 😂

    I remember meeting a girl from Finland at someone’s 18th birthday in South Africa like 03/04, I tripped out when she said she actually knew Arto. There was no social media, no on demand streaming, our media was vhs, dvd’s and sketchy v cd’s. My first ever Sk8 dvd was Flip Really Sorry - to meet someone who knew Arto felt iconic, I spent like half the night asking her about his skating 😂

    Im from Finland and i saw him once when I was a kid at some really small local event where he came to skate in the new but small skate park "like first skate park my town had". I watched him skating and was like "wow, wtf, that's so cool" and he inspired me really much after that day. But then I got into snowboarding accident where I broke my hip and hit my head really bad so I never became a good skater and just a deacent snowboarder. But it was a good day and a good childhood memory when i saw Arto Saari skateboarding live at my home town! He really made an impact

    • @aleksisuuronen5969
      @aleksisuuronen5969 18 дней назад

      It kinda is, where he said that he did not try to find composition and there is a Clear composition to the shots from the time. Then when you have that eye and capture emotion to the picture, then it's 🤌It's kinda like with music, everyone does not have the ear for say what a mix would need or some song is maybe missing a bit etc. I don't even play anything and when I was younger, so many of my friends would have bands back then and they played a lot of recorded songs for me So I would give like an honest critique of what works really well and what I would maybe do differently 😅 It was kinda odd also for me, but people seemed to really hold my opinion high (I was deep into music otherwise tho even if I did not play anything).
      I remember once as younger going to just hang out with a girl who had an expensive camera and she photographed. I don't know if it's for me drawing or graphig designing or whatever, propably enchanced it ofc, but I have always felt I have a good eye for composition. So we were just talking and switching back n forth with the cam and I was taking pictures of her and said to move a little to whatever the direction was so the background goes smoothly with it. I was kinda taken aback since it was more so Her hobby and she said that she never thinks about the background when she is taking a pic of a person. It was just odd to me having an expensive camera and then more so just snapping some pics, which is fine you do you. It still was one of the moments where I noticed a difference of atleast for one reason why her pictures came out kinda flat, since she just did not instictually have it, train it with advice, nor really try to find ideas how to make a photo better with the surroundings or whatever you can.
      Obviously you can get good with whatever you train hard enough, but some people just have some things more instinctually ready. I think even with me it's Mostly art related, but I think it kinda like.. someone just is very good with say coming ideas of how to fix something or whatever. I don't think it's thaat much differend, just working with the other side of the brain and some have more from otherside and some other. Regardless, it does not do much if you don't train it. Was it math or mixing music (I just also have seen few people who so badly want something to work and even after yeears are around at best mediocre at it. Which is ok if finding it fun. Just that realizing for yourself what comes naturally and going for it is usually much more satisfying in the end).

    In a time where we see gifted talents poping from anywhere, beeing lazy or peeky. Arto is such an example of what work and truly dedication means. From the video parts he was in back then, Flip, Es... he was one of the heaviest dude in the heaviest brands. Arto inspired so many skaters to skate longer rails...he made this possible. Whis is crazy.. If you ask Nyjah he will surely tell that Arto is is fav skateboarder. Then the injuries... from heaven to hell, now back to heaven in Hawaii. This dude is a heavy man. Mad respect, much love. Young generation must know his history and thank you guys for this doc. Call him THE GOAT. Thanks Arto !
