This is by far THE best episode of Epicly Later'd. Coming up during the late 90's/early 2000's skate era was truly magical and I remember receiving the Photosynthesis VHS through a subscription to SLAP mag. I must have worn that video out because I don't know how many times I've watched it back to back, especially AVE's part and the Habitat section. AVE was one of the skater I looked up to because of his powerful, fast skating, along with Donny Barley and John Rattray. So glad to see him doing well and still shredding. God bless you AVE, I hope you keep it going as long as you're able to. I still watch your parts non-stop, and wish I could turn back the time to relive that era once again.
Yes I'm sure it was a lot of work finding the relative clips to put in the background and not just clips of other people talking about the star and memories of them they shared together but instead this a great story and really puts you in the shoes of them all, obviously a legendary skater but most Epicly later'd i have watched for 10 15 min and click off, this one brought out emotions I didnt know i had or needed and i just got done skating but i want to go back out and explore now after having watched this and saving it to my playlist. Best by far
There was no better feeling than waking up on a Saturday morning, getting gassed up on skate videos, and going out to ride with the boys. Only thing that's come close for me is playing music.
This show is made by gay ppl so I can't watch due I do not support home sexuality if you find it interesting you may be gay lol this is not about skateboarding this is about a dudes private life. I am just bringing awareness to the community it's all I'm not trying to offend anyone we are all different but being family oriented is what we need in this nation I strongly believe any ways I'm out of here.
It made smile that you included Dylan in this episode - may he rest in peace ❤. AVE, your dedication inspires us all. Thank you for everything you do, both on and off the board!

This is one of the best episodes of Epicly Later'd. Period. This got really real. I'm 51 years old and have been skating since I was 12. I still skate as much as I can to this day. I had many good years skating and was sponsored a couple times but I knew it was never something I could make a living from. I've known sponsored and pro skaters since I started skating, and have been around the industry for decades. I even had my own company for ten years. I've seen what skating can do to people. It eats some people up and spits them out, while other people can ride the wave forever. I have massive respect for those who dedicate their lives to this thing that we love, and who don't quit. I have always worried about the skaters who don't seem to have anything else. You have to find that balance between skating and everything else. I hope Anthony finds that.
So inspiring, SOTY at 36 while I’m here 28 complaining that I can’t do it no more I need to put in the work like him. I’m so motivated to skate this weekend.
Wow, I’m in tears oddly enough watching this because I’ve had the same struggles for a long time. I’m in my thirties and this is the first time I’m actively seeking help and have decided I can’t do this alone anymore. If anyone else is going through this, you’re not alone but u need strength that can only be found in others. Seeking answers outside of our own solitary pride and ego and trying to understand that it’s okay to need help and to get it
Im with you man. Not a skater (into Moto) but have spent my adult life (41 now) hooked on pills/H/Suboxone and cant get free from it no matter how bad i want it or how many rehabs i go to. Hope you work through it.
God bless you. 20 year heroin addict with almost a year and a half off heroin now. Incredibly tough but beyond worth it. And women actually talk to me now instead of trying to avoid me 🙏
I met AVE at The DC Video premiere in Sydney - I was standing at the bar next to the VIP section when all the team riders started coming in.. It was super busy so they paused for a bit and AVE ended up standing right in front of me.. The dude next to me started fanning out for a bit and when it was time, he turned to keep going but it was still too crowded to move.. He glanced over and I held my beer up - we clinked bottles as the crowd cleared and he made his way through.. Funny thing was, we spotted each other at the after party - just clinked beers again, had a laugh and a nod and kept going - no words needed 😄
No doubt about it, this is the best Epicly Later'd episode to date! AVE's always been so gnarly, but also was like an enigma in the eyes of the skate media. But to hear his whole story, the trials, tribulations and fucking hard fought victories.... and to see where he's at now. Good job!
Watching epiclylater'd since it first came out its the most powerful documentary work dealing with addiction and sobriety out there, truly powerful stuff

In my experience, skateboarding is that perfect little feeling that everybody needs at one point in their life. Whether you’re crap at it, get really good at it, end up doing it as a career or just moving on to being a respectful spectator. It still holds a special place in all of us. All of us separated by thousands of miles, taste in music, moral compass, fashion style, political opinions, age, financial class, literally anything and everything separates us all but we all have this thing that we held on to and gives us joy and also unites all of us. GOD BLESS YOU AVE!!!! I loved his story and it really deep down resonated with me because I've personally been sober for a little over a year now and I did it for the sake of my kids.. I realized that drinking for me was my way to cover up the traumatic experiences and emotions that I had buried deep within myself not realizing that all of these years I was only running from myself this whole entire time.. Side note, when kalis 360 flipped the trash can, the 4 people on the ledge are my friend Greg, Jim and i with Ryan Gee i believe taking the picture that would end up on Kalis first pro shoebox art for dc. That was such a fun day, I'll never forget it, also AVE and some of the 23 crew came to an indoor park in nj a very long time ago. Ave was doing switch 360 flips on a steep ass bank with cornrows . Another memory I'll never forget.
People in the skate world dont realize that some of the best skating was done on speed. Hosoi doing 9 foot high airs 4 feet higher than anyone else on a shitty board? It was pervasive in the 80-90s. Different times.
Im 16 years clean from crack, and watching this makes me realize it. Its been so long its like it wasn't really me, just an old movie. I see many traits with AVE that i have. Crazy Great episode
AVE has lived a hell of a life and is still progressing every day. I have a suspicion that this episode will inspire many people to keep putting in the work, no matter their age. "This is what we're going to do". Great work Patrick and Vice, maybe your best episode yet,.
I was at the DC video premier in NYC (I think it was at Roseland Ballroom) and I sat in the back alone because I felt like I wasn't cool or something and I remember AVE and Dill came and sat with me and chopped it up with me and made me feel part of it. I'll never forget it.
I was at that too! And yes it was at Roseland. I sat a few rows back from the very front and when I turned around at the end I saw the ONE and ONLY DANNY WAY was sitting right effing behind me! 🤯
Haha he embraces it for sure. It's rad, instead of trying to look young like most middle aged people and it always looks phony he just goes his own way
Laying in my bed with a injury thinking what comes in the future for me, after watching this gave me more confident of keep pushing more and more and I know we going to make it one day
Anytime you get a glimpse of the humanity and triumph of al the things behind the scenes of someone great like AVE...its is truly inspiring and humbling! Easily one of the best Epicly Later'd to date. Big ol fat fist-bump to the man!
as a dude in his early 30s I find these older skater dudes so inspiring . I always have. I ride mountain bikes. but still think these cool older guys who still do what they love and have families . so sick.
This is so cool seeing William DaFoe talking about his skate career, but forreal Its awesome seeing people I watched growing up tell their story. Never stop!
I resonated so much with Pappalardo when he said he was reading a book and feeling judgmental toward Ave because of the lifestyle. I got into the wrong thing at an early age and getting out of it really puts perspective on life. I empathise with how Pappalardo was feeling

Another memory I'll never forget.
Great episode. AVE skated for my local shop, STYX growing up. It was where i hung out constantly and we'd hear lots of stories about him all the time.
So happy this series is back
Probably the best switch tre in the game
Such an inspiration! His skating inspires me to keep rolling at 48. All Hail AVE!!
People in the skate world dont realize that some of the best skating was done on speed. Hosoi doing 9 foot high airs 4 feet higher than anyone else on a shitty board? It was pervasive in the 80-90s. Different times.
For the newer generation, that's most likely meth. Could be ADHD medication (amphetamine) but a lot of time it's meth.
2:42 i lost it when patrick almost slammed on the throwdown right after talking about slamming
great episode. AVE was after my time, I was a late 80s to mid-90s skater but really enjoyed this.
AVE is a legend, and all The dudes skating up into their late 40s is so inspiring 🫡👏
Im 16 years clean from crack, and watching this makes me realize it. Its been so long its like it wasn't really me, just an old movie. I see many traits with AVE that i have. Crazy
Great episode
Really great episode, one of the best; well done Patrick O'Dell. I could watch this show forever.
gave me the chills. respect to Ave. thanks for being an example
Inspired💚💪 having a horrible day but this uplifted me🙏
AVE has lived a hell of a life and is still progressing every day. I have a suspicion that this episode will inspire many people to keep putting in the work, no matter their age. "This is what we're going to do". Great work Patrick and Vice, maybe your best episode yet,.
that part with Dylan talking about AVE freaking out was amazing.
Love how this series keeps evolving.
Ben Kadow talking about people not skating that aggressive anymore while being one of the most aggressive skaters I've seen is gold.
T funk is the most aggro
Kadow sucks
@@oopsydaizi3s824ok "oopsy daizi"
Nailed it VICE. AWESOME. We Need more of these!
That clip of Dylan talking about him is gold.
Amazing episode!!
bring them back, sweet memories
love from Rotterdamn nl
Patrick skates soo well. Long long time fan. Great to see it
skateboarding is truth. gratitude. so much love. peace
Never heard Greg Hunt speak before. He spoke well and honestly here. Respect
Wow this hit me harder than I ever would have thought...
Absolutely amazing episode. Congrats and thank you so much for your work Patrick ❤
That was a great episode. Happy this happened thanks very much AVE and the Epicly Later’d team
Dill looks like he's in his 70s.He looks older than my dad and he's 73.
Haha he embraces it for sure. It's rad, instead of trying to look young like most middle aged people and it always looks phony he just goes his own way
Dill will kickflip back lip your nan!!!
So what?
@@colincharan-kumpula6424 Don't get salty bro, everything's going to be ok.
I legit thought he was in a bad grampa disguise or something. 😁
Laying in my bed with a injury thinking what comes in the future for me, after watching this gave me more confident of keep pushing more and more and I know we going to make it one day
Ben casually poppin up in this made my day
I've been a fan of A.V.E. ever since his CH1 days. He's forever a favorite of mine. I'm excited for this episode 🤘🤘
Cutting to pops in a suit is amazing !!
Anytime you get a glimpse of the humanity and triumph of al the things behind the scenes of someone great like AVE...its is truly inspiring and humbling! Easily one of the best Epicly Later'd to date. Big ol fat fist-bump to the man!
So sick. Thank you so much for uploading!!! You made my day!
as a dude in his early 30s I find these older skater dudes so inspiring . I always have. I ride mountain bikes. but still think these cool older guys who still do what they love and have families . so sick.
Ever since the Dill episode been hoping for this, Patrick a legend for getting this one!
This is so cool seeing William DaFoe talking about his skate career, but forreal Its awesome seeing people I watched growing up tell their story. Never stop!
BIG UPS AVE BIG UPS DILL This was really one of my favorite Epicly Later'd joints ever.... NUF RESPECT!
I resonated so much with Pappalardo when he said he was reading a book and feeling judgmental toward Ave because of the lifestyle. I got into the wrong thing at an early age and getting out of it really puts perspective on life. I empathise with how Pappalardo was feeling
Been waiting for this one
It was only a matter of time🥳
Mind field is a dope video. Combining classics and technical skating. Love it.
