How to Detail Your Engine Bay: HEAVY DIRT

- Many people want to detail their engines, but they do not know where to start. It can be ver confusing with the endless opinions circulating around this subject, some saying don't use water, some saying use a pressure washer. In this video I detail an engine bay that has not been cleaned or degreased in over 10 years. This engine was covered in some serious heavy dirt, and once again, my good friend purple power did the job. Here I show how to degrease your engine bay with purple power, and at the same time, I prove that modern day engines can handle water no problem. Purple power is an amazing product for engine bay cleaning because it is so cheap, and you just have to use a lot of it. Follow along as I degrease and detail this horribly dirty engine bay with purple power degreaser, and show you how I protect my engines until the next time they are cleaned!

I’ve detailed thousands of engine bays with a pressure washer and have never once had an issue. Agreed Luke - if people don’t like this method, don’t do it yourself! So much misinformation out there with detailing and many “opinions”. Keep doing your thing, you’re awesome Luke!
The Hood Closing on itself...was the car saying..Aaah..NOPE! U AIN'T!!
PRICELESS!!
I've had good results using a detailing brush to apply the protectant, and also just wrapping a plastic shopping bag around anything electrically sensitive, simple and seems to work well for me, but I agree, too many people freak out about using water, and I've never had a problem as long as I don't soak the alternator or wires. Thanks for the vids, always very informative.
Definitely a great strategy!! And thank you man I appreciate that!!!
Hi Luke, always enjoyed your videos and I learned a lot from you. I'm just a drive way detailer aka car enthusiast that love to keep my car clean. Thanks for the great videos and you always go straight to the point. Also thanks for answering to your fan's questions.
hey sam that is amazing!! Thank you for the encouragement and being involved here! Im glad you are here!
Luke Wilson! You are the man! I really appreciate your time spent producing these videos since I’ve been thinking of expanding my specialty cleaning business to include car detailing.
I was inspired to try this immediately on my own vehicle when I saw this video and so I now have a very clean engine compartment!
Just one note that I would add is to make sure you rinse down the client’s driveway after finishing the cleaning- especially if it’s light-colored uni-stone or paver driveway. Or else you can end up having to return a day later when the client finds the gunk from the engine compartment in the middle of his/ her driveway. Yikes!
TRUE!!!!
Thanks good information your info is very helpful iam even thinking about starting my own business
I did this from the time I was 16 detailing my own cars all the way to today at age 32. Never once had an issue. Just use common sense. But of course, with the Internet, it's the worst thing you can do and will cause your car to melt into the Earth. I looked online once to find what oil filter one of my cars took and I wound up reading a forum about which oil was best. For every possible oil choice, there was someone on the forum insisting that using that oil would be certain to grenade my engine block into confetti. Internet know-it-alls are the worst.
Hahahahaha I love it all very true
Most detailer videos that I have watched tell you to use common sense. Less dirt, less cleaning product, less water.... more dirt, more cleaning product, more water. In your tutorial "Heavy Dirt" your method worked and the car started even though you heard a squeaky belt For a couple of seconds. You can hear that same squeak driving through deep puddles during a heavy rain. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Of course! Thanks for watching man!
When the hood fell his reaction was so funny i was laughing to die...well done...
😂😂😂😂😂
My bro was so calm when the hood slammed! Any ideas on washing cars in the WINTER? I Have no garage but am currently killing it with my partner. The issue is if we move to just interiors during the winter that's a half profit season..
Great video!! I’ve washed engines for years with water and never had any issues. I think one of the issues people have when doing that is with the older cars that have points rather than electronic ignition when points get wet it’s really hard for the car to start. Also one other thing, purple power is great but super clean is even better that stuff rocks
I've been cleaning my engines every year since 1981 and never had a problem!
great video but do you need to unplug the posative or negative for the battery so nothing gets electricuted or grounded and #2 i hear you need to cover your alternator maybe? not sure... but other then that great video
Dude your channel is blowing me away. Now you are detailing the engine. That's going hard man. People do not even see the engine. I was oblivious to detailing my own car before finding your channel. How often do you detail the outside of your car?
JLU2k Hahahaha dude you are the best!! Thanks so much that is so encouraging. I detail the outside of mine every 2 weeks if I have time but sometimes I get so busy I slack 😂😂
Great Presentation
You've come a long way ;)
Thanks for answering question about 1990 Ford 302 Mustang engine bay. I’ve picked up a gorgeous 2001 Z06 Vette. Is it new enough to use Purple Power and water like you did on that Kia without damaging the electronics? I’ve heard C5 Vettes can have some electrical issues but I’d like to be able to use water to really get it clean. Thanks for the ideas you present every week.
Hey man do you ever use meguiars hyperdressing for the engine bay ? I see a lot of people using that . I personally haven't put any dressing in my engine bay but I plan on picking up something . Keep up the good work man. I really look forward to watching your videos. Let the haters hate. I use purple power full strength in my engine bay and it kicks ass. I live in Redding, California where he gets 110 in the summer, so I always have my hose next to me so the purple power doesn't dry.! Never have had a problem either with using purple powerful strength or water in my engine bay! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Rick's Learning life yes yes yes! Love it! Personally I don't use hyper dressing. I rely on chemical guys vrp almost as a substitute for the hyper dressing. I just like that product better, but hyper dressing is certainly a great product to use so don't be afraid to use it cause it's AWESOME! I just have no need of it because of the VRP, I also like the VRP better on tires and trim because it will not sling like hyper dressing will sometimes, hope that helps! Thanks for the encouragement! Glad the videos are helping!!
Wilson Auto Detailing do you buy VRP A 16 ounce bottle. I'm deciding if I want to use VRP or hyper dressing or carpro perl . I want to get something that goes along way. So I don't have to keep buying product that's why I like the Maguires lineup so much.
Rick's Learning life ya man totally understood, I use VRP, however all of the products you listed are great products, VRP certainly goes a long way, and I buy it in a gallon size, so I would definitely suggest VRP, but any way you go is going to be a win with those products, check out my tire dressing video and let me know if that helps you, I talk a little about VRP
@@wilsonautodetailing dear friend, as you knoe...VRP is a water based dressing.....so if you like dressing your engine with this but..it cannot be applyed easy wth applicator to cover nuks and creavices ypu can easily dilute t 1-1,1-2 e.t.c whatever you like with distilted water in a spray botyle and so help you to cover with dressing all the hard to reach componets of your engine
And i will sugest stoner trim shine not tyre shine for dress the engine....trim shine is a bit thinner spray and dry to he touch
Mr.Wilson is it okay to shampoo your seats with a wet and dry vacuum.(specifically the KARCHER WD 3)
Hi I just subscribed to your channel and I'm new to this and I'm about to start up my detailing company soon I haven't quite got all the stuff yet but I would really appreciate your advice on how to get this company up and running and to be successful I also know you're based in America I'm from England and I haven't quite got a company name yet but I'm just in the early stages of buying the equipment and on a budget if there's any tips or tricks that you can advise me i would be much appreciate it
i used water.... everytime i have never messed up a engine never... great advice brother
Seriously, RUclips's 2x play speed is a time saver.
The best way is degreaser with spray bottle of water. Quick wipe down and spray tire shine and hit with air gun and boom. All done
Would it be easier to remove the plastic vanity engine cover?
By ‘modern day’ engine you mean engines from about which year on?
Good video. But, I noticed that you didn't remove the engine cover and actually clean the engine; you only cleaned the engine cover. Was that because you were only doing an overview demonstration? Or, do you never remove the engine cover? Just curious . . .
I do not remove the engine cover in engine details
@@wilsonautodetailing then your not cleaning the engine..your only cleaning the plastic covers...degrease a block while in the car manifold valve covers, intake, water pump or block.i can use windex to clean plastic.
I was kind of curious on how the best way to clean and degrease the 'underside' of the engine, i.e.,bottom of the trans case, oil pan etc.. I've personally used my electric pressure washer and a floor jack to try and reach these areas with limited success. I only notice how cruddy it is on the under belly of my engine when I'm changing my oil (yeah I still changer my own oil) or whatever. But I like to know that the bottom is just as clean as the topside of my engine bay. thanks for your channel.
What's up PlayOkay! I think that the way you approached cleaning the underside is exactly what I would have done to get that sort of job done as well! I dont know too much of what else to tell you in that regard! Thanks for being involved in the channel, I appreciate you!!!
...who else likes too smoke a few joints while cleaning and detailing their vehicle?? Takes me just a wee bit longer but still looks lovely.
Pablo ThePlug that’s my medication only way for me to get focused and get into it. Every car comes out beautiful tho
i am curious about taking the plastic engine cover off of my car to detail under because there is some oil that leaked under it. there are coil packs under the cover but they seem sealed with a rubber boot. I have a steamer that I was thinking of taking to it. what are your thought? I am detailer too but this is for my own personal use... hoping to be able to find an oil leak if I clean it good.
Briana Fodor ya if you do end up removing that I would stick to the steamer for sure.
I know that the Chevy, Chrysler, and Ford Auto Malls by us all power spray all their engines after spraying with degreaser (usually Red Hot Degreaser) in their own detail shops, be it trade ins, Auction buys, and even new cars sold out. ALL their engines get power washed with a high PSI spraygun.
Beautiful !!!!
Thanks man!
Hey I have a question that pretty much no engine detailing video on Facebook really addresses, say you have really heavy set it dirt/grease on the sides of the shock towers and the firewall that multipurpose cleaners/degreasers don't touch (I used purple power), what can you do for it? The rest of my engine bay comes spotlessly clean all except for the sides of the shock towers and a few small spots at the top of the firewall. Thanks in advance.
Heather J.
Hey Heather! Have you ever heard of a product called rapid remover? I have several videos out about it, I would consider getting a 32 ounce bottle of that, it is an adhesive remover, and I think it might solve your problem!!
Just never use water in a ford. Omg I fucked up on my mustang detailing my engine bay and my car broke down on me and wasn't running well and my mechanic said it was the water and I had to blow all the coils out. Because of that I am afraid of detailing engines. Thank you for this video I trust you 😊
I detailed a car with 315000 miles and the engine was never detailed once that was a nightmare
ya fords can be a bear!! Mostly just the old fords though!!! I never use water on an old ford! Great tip my man! Sorry you learned the hard way hahaha! But it happens!
I used to detail at a Ford dealership and out of the several hundreds of Ford trade-ins that I detailed only one had an engine problem after I detailed it in the exact way shown on this video. It was an 5.4 L V-8 F-150, probably an '08 and it was an engine coil which cost a whopping $300 to replace. Most other vehicles don't cost near that much to replace and much of the time You can just blow the coils out. I use pressurised air to dry the engines I clean and this is one of the reasons why.
I've been detailing engines with water for over 30 years!
I see this works well on newer cars. Do you use water when doing engine detailing on pre 2000 cars, such as a 1990 302 Ford engine bay?
I do not!
Love your videos.
Would spraying water cause rust build up?
Nice job amigo
No problem using water, in over 40 years.
Yo thats crazy the hood slammed randomly because the same thing happened to me today
hey man i been watching your videos for a while, keep up the great work! can we get a video on pricing engine bay details? i have only done a few and not to sure how to price them.
+Jaylen Heres great idea!!! ThNk you and yes absolutely I will do
That!
I use chemical guys tire kicker for dressing engine bay or the meguiars vinyl super gloss protectant dressing and it makes the engine bay look clean as fuck!
my dear Wilson if i remember correct from a chemist friend of mine........ALL...... APCs or degreasers ..no matter whitch companies product is..........are by chemist point of view designed to be diluted with water. Water not just adjust its strength but also engage and activate some of the chemical ingredients inside those formulas.
(that as my chemist explained to me) ....so i think to do NOT dilute the products at all not only is waste of product but i think that if you do NOT dilute or even .....1-1 or maybe some OZ of water at least,..... you do not fully activate the cleaners ability!!!!!!!!!!!
keep it in mind my dear Wilson.
Haha thanks man, but not really true
Another nice vid, have you ever used aerospace 303. It's excellent stuff you need to check it out.
dlroto ya I have! It definitely has its place that's for sure!
my 2 cents here, I also use 303 protectant on a lot of areas, but I feel its a little bit pricey . Anyways, I like your videos...
Yes I'm a fan of 303 in situations like that for sure! Great point!!
this is all fine and dandy on new cars with plastic all over. what about a 60's ford with a small block with a carb and years of sludge on the block?? tire foam will build up and become sticky and attract more dust and dirt..any dirt you didn't get will also flow into those hard to reach spots like the spark plug holes and threads where it should never be and if that sticky coating falls into the piston while your changing your plugs it will cause damage...it will void any warranty the manufacturer or dealer give you.
Another fun and great video. glad the hood didn’t close on you. :-)
Good job
Thank you Danny
I worked at a buy here pay here detailing cars... we would drench the engine in degreaser then blast the engine running with a power washer sometimes out in the freezing cold... I would try to kill the car because they were junk and the job sucked but never killed one...
i have problems with sprayers leaking when its sitting in my car
Jackal pl0w what do you mean?
I think your saying cause your storing your bottles on your trunk and in the sun..??
Me too. Unscrew them just enough for the gasses to escape.
What makes the paint under the hood any different than the paint on the outside of the of the car? It’s literally the same paint and clear coat.
Not quite, even if you feel it, it is not clear coated the exact same way as the outer side of the paint in many cases
Wilson Auto Detailing
Detailing products can seem rather confusing sometimes with their application recommendations and I appreciate the response.
The first and only time I cleaned my engine using water, a spark plug wire shorted out and had to be replaced. I wouldn't use water again. And at the very least, disconnect the battery if you do use water.
Interesting, sorry that happened! I would call that a specific situation, because the way engines are manufactures today, they are so water tight I have never had an issue, as well as other great detailers I know
The water did not cause your wire to short out, it was already defective and the water identified the problem. I've been a mechanic for 40 years and he is correct. Water will not damage anything under the hood with a little common sense.
11:54 thats why use water wisely , thats water bw belt and cause belts to slip
for about 5 min..grease and dirt will allow it to slide more ..
This is how they clean my engine bay at the dealership everytime i go for PMS
hahaha yes exactly!
Amazon link to your sunglasses?
😂
Common sense isn't always common 🙄 lol engine bay came out clean and shiny 👌
The only water I use is out of a spray bottle. I have a newer car and I garden hose it and water got inside the of the spark plugs. Had to change the oil
It doesn't make sense at all. First of all, unless you uncover the spark plugs there is no way you can get water in there with just a harden hose. And secondly, oil and spark plugs serve different purposes.
1) Degreaser in chemical sprayer 2) power wash 3) compressed air to dry all parts 4) spray dressing 1:1 w water 5) compressed air to remove access
Done
Yep! This is particularly great with engines that are maintained
Save yourself hours and use armor all tire foam cleaners you may still have to use some elbow grease it it’ll save you so much time
wrong. it'll attract more dirt and dust also just push the dirt down into places where it shouldn't be. it builds up and becomes sticky.
Engines get wet when it rains anyway. To break it down if you think your car never gets rain in the engine you really have a lot to learn. Driving 30miles an hour will 2 inches of rain...?
True that!
I'd almost be willing to give you a hundred dollars to get that debris out from under that windshield wiper to satisfy my ocd
hahaha ya this wasnt an actual client, just an example car for the video
Can you talk about detailing an electric engine?
I actually don’t even do that myself
spray nine please, its so readily available
Jackal pl0w Spray Nine is a very good product!
Make a video using the rug doctor
Check them out!
The dirt is part of the plastic under that hood.
Supports fail on a Kia. LOL. #shocking
hahahahaha!
If you haven't tried STONER products you should. Their wheel and tire/degreaser cleaner is amazing.
Yes!!! I have never tried their cleaner but I LOVE THEIR TIRE SHINE
Invisible glass 😍
who all thinks he talk too much😂😛...btw g8 work
Thanks man!! Hahaha!
The sticky peer-to-peer singly attack because competition immuhistochemically argue down a entertaining scooter. nimble, known greece
This is not an engine clean, it just an engine cowling clean, we never saw the motor, take of the covers mate and see what an engine is you have no idea what you are talking about
This is what we do in the Detailing world and categorize it as an engine cleaning. No it is not technically scrubbing out the inner workings of an engine
Thank you Luke for doing this video even though it wasn't a paying job for you. I really appreciate it! Looks like I will be needing some of those products to get this done. :-)
Yessir of course! Glad to help!
