    I am getting addicted to your videos, Bjørn. I am Italian, and it looks like my Country is still in the Medieval Age, when it comes to electric cars. Yesterday I watched an Italian video about Peugeot 2008 electric. They never mentioned the battery pack, how fast it charges, how much the car is efficient... Judging from the Italian kind of test, I understand that in Italy we are so much behind. Keep up your good work, I am getting Norvegian Blood in my veins, video after video :-)

    Bjorn I think the effort you put into your videos is incredible. I can barely stay in a car for 2 hours. But you literally drive for 4-5 hours for fun and statistics.
    Insane.

  • @NeilBlanchard
    @NeilBlanchard 4 года назад +71

    Yes, rain adds a lot of drag - if you think that for every mile (1.6km) a typical car shifts about 4.5 TONS (4080kg) of air - imagine how much mass of water the car slams into and has to accelerate! Also, the water on the road surface has to be squeezed out from under the tires, so this adds a lot of rolling resistance, too.

    • @karlis-blums
      @karlis-blums 4 года назад +5

      Interesting! apparently fossil fuel is so energy dense that you don't feel much rain dragging

    • @jenschristianschmidt8049
      @jenschristianschmidt8049 4 года назад +13

      @@karlis-blums I must say I can see bigger fuel consumption in my fossil Skoda Octavia 1,5 L TSI. From 22 km/l to 19 km/l with 110 km/h in non-rain and rain respectively. That is what? 10% more fuel. In my C63 6,2 L V8 on the other hand. I feel no difference at all. Gives me 4,5 - 6 km/l no matter what I do. 90 km/h or 120 km/h is same consumption haha

    • @NeilBlanchard
      @NeilBlanchard 4 года назад +7

      @@karlis-blums No, if you have ever looked at the consumption on an ICE, then you see the same effects. In the winter, ICE cars also lose range.

    • @karlis-blums
      @karlis-blums 4 года назад

      Neil Blanchard I do about 50k km a year so winter driving in is well known 😉 I’m sure there is loss in rain too. All I say is that it looks like in electrics propulsion it is much more noticeable then in ice cars. See that Jens Christian Schmidt also do not notice it on his C63 😜

    • @ryen7512
      @ryen7512 4 года назад +18

      @@karlis-blums The irony is that fossil fuel ICE is so inefficient to begin with (20-30%), that adding another inefficiency (like rain) doesn't make as big of a difference as it does to an EV which is 80-90% efficient in ideal conditions.

      currently it would be 0€ for the ID3 and no idea how much for Tesla as all ID3 charge for free at Ionity in the first year.

    77kWh ID.3 might come close to Model 3 time.

    • @Gresteh
      @Gresteh 4 года назад

      Maybe... but the problem here wasn't really the battery size, it was the charging infrastructure, that's the point of this video, how it works in an area with 50kw chargers instead of having access to faster chargers. As we saw in the 1000km challenge it can almost match Model 3 times if it has the right charging infrastructure despite having a lower peak charging rate. A bigger battery wont help too much to reduce long distance travels like this one as you are limited to the Km per hour you can charge along the way, you can drive longer, but you will have to charge for a longer time. In the end both cars should have similar times, certainly you will be able to get more KM of range at Elverum and Klett and that may allow you to save some time, but other than that, in this specific trip a larger battery wont help that much, as you will still have to charge in a couple of 50kw chargers along the way.

    a lot of time spent charging , my confidence in the UK infrastructure is not high. Easy in spacious Europe , I think there would be bunfights in the UK with horrendous queuing !

    does your model 3 have a big battery? i guess with the 77kWh battery with 125kW charging, you would have saved time too

    I’m thinking about buying an id3 but I’m wondering about the car heating, I like a really warm car especially in winter so what’s the interior heating like and does it detract from your range.

    I'm just curious... how much did it cost you in charging to do this run? Can quote in NOK.

    Bjørn! I recommend you should have a portable fire alarm (røykvarsler) when sleeping in cars, for your safety. Great videos you make!

    • @bjornnyland

      Why? Are you expecting EVs to randomly catch fire?

    • @tellusw9701
      @tellusw9701 4 года назад

      I know electric cars seldom catch fire, the same with houses we live in. But you have many other electronic equipment with you and chinese batteriers ;-) In such closed compartment even a little fire will be dangerous and humans dont wake up when the toxic smoke builds up. Its a very cheap life insurance.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  4 года назад

      Based on your assumptions, you should always carry a smoke detector anywhere you sleep. Even in a tent.

    I like your videos! Do you recommend buying the heat pump for more efficiency during the cold days? I would like a range comparison test with and without a heat pump.

      Yes

      Isnt it a standard in all versions or is it just Finnish importer choosing wisely for everyone? :D

    • @actLensFree
      @actLensFree 4 года назад

      @@Karjis I went yesterday to a dealer in Germany and the heat pump can be installed only as an add-on starting with the Life variant. On the basic Pro variant you can't even install it. If I remember right the heat pump option costs 1250 EUR

    • @Karjis
      @Karjis 4 года назад

      @@actLensFree that has to be some kind of market deviation in models. I just (before answering) went to finnish official VW web-page and checked the price catalog. It says clearly that heat pump is always standard in all variants sold here. BUT they don't even import anything cheaper than Life, maybe because the lack of possibility to have heat pump? So basically "prices starting from" option is Pure 93kW with 45kWh battery with Life options.
