      The D5 can do recording for an indefinite time at 4K out to an Atomos device. This makes it a very good video camera. Plus it doesn't have the unusable 4K codec of the Canon DSLRs. The GH4 has a sensor that is just a quarter the size of the full frame sensor, thus making the two cameras incomparable. Micro four thirds sensors can never be better than full frame sensors. They can be pretty good though. I don't understand why you recommend them for video if they really are quite small sensors.
      Plus not everyone needs 4K. I think I might take 1080p out of the FF D750 over the 4K out of the MFT GH4.

      Why are you comparing a D5 to a D810 itls like comparing a Ferrari to a Landrover.

    Nice vid! Just for the record, the last little bit about how much a D5 would cost per month ($120) was a neat way to look at a buy/no buy decision that had I never considered. It's impressive how much time and effort you guys put into your reviews! Keep it up!

      Tony & Chelsea Northrup Your last names like Northrup Grumman,lol.BTW,I think it's a much better choice to buy a D810 than a D5 .And I have a question,I remember in one of your videos u said 5-6 yrs there gonna be 100Mp cameras.So,any manufacturers coming up with those kind of cameras with 4k60p capabilities and a ccd censor?That would be awesome.

    Thanks for the solid review, Tony. With some of the new tech in the D5 going into the new D500, I am going to be really interested in that camera. I'm looking forward to your review of the D500, and I think that is the camera that so many of us wildlife photographers have the high hopes for.

    really like how you guys deconstruct a product in review.. this is the most practical review i have have seen for the D5, where the reviewer is not trashing Nikon but clarifies what the D5 camera is built [high speed, low noise, specialised purpose built tool] for and who can make the most of it.

  • @DanielOrtegoUSA

    I've been on the fence to switch systems for quite some time. This demo helped me out in many ways as I like the way that you and Chelsea approached the subject with an intuitive and casual demeanor. As a Sony shooter for several years, I've grown long in the tooth with how the company handles their product updates and customer support. Not even the A7 series cameras are enough to make up for the shortfalls in this area. While the Canon has always impressed me, I simply prefer the Nikon glass over that of Canon. I was debating between the D5 and the 810 and this video helped. I plan to buy your book soon after writing this review.

    The best thing, for me, about the D5 is the absolutely huge discount I got on two, new, D4s's. Paid 15% more than a single D5 for both of them. Horses for courses though, the D4s just suited what I needed for the shoots I'm using them for, especially at the pricepoint I got them for.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 лет назад +3

      +Alex Alexander Yeah, the D4s continues to be (almost) as great a camera at everything the D5 is good at, and at barely more than half the price, it's by far a better value.

      @timgoerz5820 8 лет назад +2

      +Alex Alexander I'm with you, Alex...I just picked up 2. The D4s is a proven commodity. Let's see what the D5 is like in 6-12 months

    • @alexalexander1
      @alexalexander1 8 лет назад +1

      +Tony Northrup Couldn't agree more, Tony. So far anyway, as I've only used them twice, but I'm happy with the results I'm getting. Also, Nikon Pro magazine has confirmed a firmware update is coming in June for the 4k recording time limit. It's going to allow the full 29m 59s but will split the file into 4gb chunks.

    Best review on the D5 in the RUclips world period, i was embarrassed when you compared the D7200(it's a camera i have) buffer with the D5, and relieved seconds after when you showed a far better picture for birding from the D7200, such a funny moment...... Thanks Guys looking forward for your upcoming reviews

    7:39 that is incorrect, the d4s has dual processor (though one processor isn't completely dedicated to af algorithms). In addition, the af module with the d750 is Advanced Multicam 3500 FX ll while the d810 and d4s are both Advanced Multicam 3500 FX

    i love my d810 for wildlife. wasn't sure whether to spring for the d5. worried i would be disappointed with lower mp and with your recommendation to get the d810 instead for pure image quality. i have now got the D5 and have done extensive testing. the end result is that yes the d810 can produce the sharpest image of the whole day if the light is right and you catch the focus but the number of keepers is about a 10:1 ratio between the D5 and the D810 due to iso and focus limitations of d810. i shot hawks in flight all morning with d5, 600f4 and 1.4 TC, briefly switched to the d810 as a test and did not get one image that had acceptable noise and perfect focus. I am very pleased i got the D5. if i am shooting a landscape or something static at base iso i will still use the d810 still.

      You should try the D500. We've don't currently recommend the D810 for wildlife.

    • @BumbleBeeBeeRock
      @BumbleBeeBeeRock 8 лет назад

      How much wildlife did you disturb in the process?! Faster frame-rate, doesn't necessary mean ethical photography; especially when you're out shooting wildlife. If you're serious about Wildlife photography, not a single picture is worth the disturbance to get the "perfect" shot. I don't care how fast the FPS is.

      @Tony & Chelsea Northrup
      Why must photographers in general say so much nonsense? "shutter speed" (as if it is the least relevant in photography) "lens speed" (as if speed of a objective is the least relevant in photography). "Lens" when you really mean objective. 9:47 "D7200 is buffering already", no it's not. It is buffering all the time. What you heard (when the frequency went down) is when the buffer ran full. Why must photographers in general say so much complete nonsense? Is it because you slept through all the science classes and don't have the faintest clue? No, it's not, becuase you could still stfu and not talk about something you don't have the faintest clue. It is embarrassing listening to for intelligent people. Are we outside your target group?

    Tony one more important advantage of the D5 vs the 810 involves cold weather. While shooting Polar Bears on the Hudson Bay in October my 810 battery froze every morning soon after introducing it to the 10-15 degree weather while my D4 battery, the same as the D5, worked like a champ. In fact well under zero degrees fahrenheit the D4 battery never even slowed.

  • @danielmcgrath9960
    @danielmcgrath9960 8 лет назад

    No mention of the D5's strong construction v 810.
    I use 800E and D4s to shoot wide range of material and the D800E will not take the accidental knocks that happen on a daily basis whereas D4s is built to work.
    Great presentation, thank you.

    For wildlife and sport: I love my Canon 1D Mark IV. I know its not a high pixel shooter, but its a little sharper than my 1D Mark III. Always great auto focus and a all day battery.
    And you can get it used at a reasonable price.

    I have the older D800 and D4. I find the D800 suffers more motion blur if I am not using a tripod. The D4 handheld always produces sharper images than the D800. Unless I am not in a studio or doing landscape photography, the D4 always gets the better image.

  • @Topgunphoto

    Bought the D5 for sports as even my D500 in a D1 College gym had issues with lighting. Main subject are jets at air shows and for a FX body, it still does great because of the focusing.

    When I first watched this video, I didn't know about the most expensive DSLR Nikon ever made. The Nikon D3X. When released it retailed for $8000! It featured a 24MP full frame sensor that is still rated very highly for it's color depth and dynamic range. I recently found a D3X in a like-new condition for $1000. Great images in a tough body. Love your channel!

  • @ashwinshankar

    Do you think there would be an upgrade to the D810.. say like D850 with the marginal increase in Megapixel with similar sensor and autofocus technology of the D5..and may give say 8fps... a true successor to the D700. That would be a great camera for landscape, portrait and wildlife/sports...

    Thank you for doing an honest and thorough review covering all aspects, so that even the novice photographer can finally understand that this is not a general all rounder. People will have to understand that this is not a video camera, (and the firmware update to shoot 4k for 30mins will come, most probably), this is not a landscape camera, this is not a street or holiday camera, or even a wildlife camera, BUT, it is a beast of a SPORTS & NEWS REPORTING camera, BECAUSE, that's exactly what it was designed to do, and that's who will buy this camera.
    I'm so glad you proved the AF system to be so good, because "The Angry Phatphuc" went into a camera store, looked at this camera for 5 mins, and called it a review of "why the D5 was so bad, particularly the AF", and yet he's just got hold of the D500, and can't stop going on about how good the AF is on the D500.
    Can't wait for you to do an actual comparison of the D500 and the D5.

    Thanks for the overview! Very, very helpful as always. Say what do you think the better value is? If you could only have one camera between a used D750, D810, used D700, D3S, D4S, or a new D5. You got to do weddings, headshots, portraits, seniors, no sports let's say. e.g. What most of us do making a living in general photography day to day. The occasional not so critical product shoot and portraits of all types, local magazine work etc... Just your average local photographer.

  • @patricksmith2553

    The D7200 or Canon 5DS sensor does matter if you don't get the shot in the first place and that is why these camera's are so expensive and preferred by most professionals. I have always used and loved the Nikon pro bodies, currently I use two D4S'. With their faster frame rate and better autofocus system's the D4S and D5 rarely misses a shot and gives you so many more keepers than other camera's will. Also it's very important to me that a camera is built tough and weather sealed like these are and the huge batteries in them mean you rarely have to charge them.

    I truly appreciate the review. Great information, as usual. I'm not sure I get the point of comparing a D5 to D810. They are designed for completely different tasks. I wouldn't buy a Ferrari to haul a trailer full of sugar beets nor a Mack Truck to do 0-60 in 3 seconds. Both are extremely capable of doing what they are designed to accomplish -- and it's clearly not the same thing. The D5 is a sports camera; pure and simple and it needs to be evaluated against its peers in that category. Loved the review. Looking forward to the head-to-head D5 Cannon 1DX II comparison, and perhaps a value-for-money comparison between the D5 and D500. Great work.

    also on the wildlife part; i beg to differ. you dont buy a mclaren 650s and use low rolling resistance tires on it! anybody who would get a top of the line body like the d5 should naturally also get top of the line -long- glass along with it.

      +Nikolai Tsakov Anyone doing that is probably using the D7100/7200 as their birding and "rest of their life" camera to shoot their family photos and stuff. No pros are shooting DX sensors at this point, especially with an 800mm. If they are, I would advise against emulating their questionable behavior.

      @andrewsorensen2481 8 лет назад +1

      +Jon Hillenbrand Photography Whatever works. The truth is that most people aren't shooting with 800mm lenses either. Crop sensor bodies with great glass in good light makes for a potentially excellent wildlife set-up. Naturally ff will do better in lower light, but many professionals don't shoot wildlife unless conditions are ideal. It's all about knowing what you want and then learning to take advantage of the best equipment for the job. FF isn't necessarily the best for all things.

    Best review of this camera so far, would of been great to see it in action shooting some live action sport though. Can't wait to see the D500 review, going to be much more attainable for mere mortals like.

    Excellent review, just a clarification: The D750 does not have the same autofocus of the D810, it's better in once sense (more sensible up to ev -3) and lesser in other (more tight)

    Peter Bucek I noticed the shitty 18-55mm kit lens that came with the Canon M3 does something similar; the center of the frame gets way more blur which diminishes a bit as you get to the corners. Gives a trippy tunnel-like bokeh. Peculiar.

    I'd love the same comparison with the Canon 1Dx II and the new 5D! If you've already done this, would you mind sharing the link?

    To be honest, what I like is the pro body (ruggedness, weathersealing etc.) I wish they would make the succesor of the d810 with a d5-like body.

    Thank you Tony for this Video. Although I am not looking to buy this Camera, I loved your comparisons and Point of View.
    I am looking to buy a camera for Wildlife Photography (birds) in low light to replace my Nikon D7100 Body and looking forward to your other videos. I would love a comparison between Nikon D500 and D810 / D750. I shortlisted these 3 and will be looking to buy one in the coming 3-4 months. Would love to hear your thoughts on the same.

    Hey guys, what camera were you filming the scene at 2:00 on? It has some very weird focus hunting artifacts in the building behind Chelsea while she remains relatively in focus. Rather weird! :P

    I think you missed the point of the D5. You can't compare it to any other camera other than the Canon 1Dx mark2. Both are great , rugged pro spec cameras that are made to be used every day in all situations. If you want video buy a video camera. If you want silent buy a mirrorless Sony A9. The D5 is the best camera I have ever used. You are right when you say have an 850 for large file shots or magazine covers. But for 80% of commercial work the D5 is amazing and worth the money.

    I have been watching your videos for years and I am not the critic type I am a photographer and know there are many different ways of doing things but I do have a question before doing reviews do you AF fine tune the lenses you are using? I know it is a pain but I noticed in some of your studio shots it may have been focusing before the eye and not on it which I have had issues with using Nikon bodies (not sure about other manufactures) and I am glad they included this feature for us. Further more the D500 has the capability to auto fine tune itself which makes me believe nikon is a firm believer of fine tuning our lenses I am surprised you did not mention it in your d500 review thats why I felt the need to ask. Good job though keep the videos coming.

      We've never had a camera/lens combination that required AF fine tuning, and we've tested it all extensively. The AF on this gear was perfect.

    • @joshuaz842
      @joshuaz842 8 лет назад

      All my lenses except the 105 micro needed to be fine tuned including the 24-70 and 70-200 on all my bodies, I thought I noticed the same in a few of your shots so I thought I would ask. Thanks for the reply.

    I ISO is an analog gain before the discretization of the signal (ADC), therefore, there is a reason to limit the iso, it is the limit of the amplifier circuit. it is not software based.

    Looking forward to the D500 in the wild. Spec list is one thing but real use is better :). At £1750 in the UK ( no greys yet because too new) it's going to need a mortgage to buy one ( slight exaggeration but you get the point). Btw, the D810 is this review wins :)
