- If you remember in the last video, we overbuilt an awesome door for my new closet studio with electronic privacy glass and a custom walnut cat door for shop cats Jerry and Lola. And now it was time for the next phase of the office studio buildout - a walnut floating desk. Are you ready for kerf bending that doesn’t work, drawers that are too tall, sliding things into a bag, pocket holes??, hot glue, sharing a yoga mat with Jerry, pattern routing, lifting heavy things, using paper as a shim, the closeup of a pencil and shop cats that aren’t always helpful as they think they are…then check this out!

This is what I like to see, woodworkers that don't have an ego and are willing to show their mistakes and how they fix them. Well done mate.
Thank you kindly! I greatly appreciate the comment. Cheers! #mistakeshappen
I’m going to add onto this by saying I love woodworking but when I do it I always mess up at various points like every single project and I’ve only really gotten to do woodworking at high school so far (graduated last year) so whenever I messed up I got glares and felt so bad about myself and my abilities even though I do end up making great stuff whenever I got the opportunity for creative freedom. Seeing your mistakes and how you also get upset and frustrated about it makes me feel a lot better knowing that this happens to other people and even though sometimes material gets scrapped etc you keep going. Thank you so much.
Keith. Always a pleasure watching your video's and editing. Your humility for not editing the screw ups is what gives most of us the thrill of woodworking and that anything can be fixed... just don't tell and no one will ever notice.
Thanks very much! Showing mistakes and fixes definitely make the video longer, but glad to hear it's helpful. 🙏👍
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Measure twice and cut once
@@matthewday7565I’ve measured 4 times and cut wrong…such a silly saying 😂
That you can run a router and that cat doesnt go bat crap crazy is amazing.
It definitely is quite odd 😹
As a new woodworker that still makes a lot of little mistakes, it's encouraging to see that someone with your pedigree also makes mistakes on projects.
Yeah man, it's an inevitable part of the process when every project is new and different from the previous.
Love an obvious expert with a self deprecating sense of humor. Well done!
Haha. Thanks man!
The "OMG how did I even do that" truly resonates with me😂
Preach! 😂
Seriously the way you problem solve your mistakes, hide them masterfully and of course show us your process is really awesome. Great work man
Thank you sir! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
I love the fact that you show just how realistically woodworking is. The minor mistakes we all continue to make even with years of experience in the trade is what makes us all a better wood worker! Perseverance and overcoming are huge payoffs Keith! By far, my favorite build I’ve watched!
P.S. Every build on here is my favorite 🙌🏻 Love this build and I can’t wait to watch the window sill trim, your desk riser, floating shelves, and your commission desk builds if we are lucky enough to watch the entire process 🙏🏻
Thanks Christian! It’s definitely a battle out in the shop every day despite how much experience you may have. Unexpected things just crop up and mistakes happen. That is the challenge of it all. 😂
God, I'm glad it's not just me who screws everything up. Every time I touch wood, I end up down and thinking I'm just incompetent. I mean, it comes together in the end, but never how I actually planned it.
Gotta bob and weave! 😂
While errors and snags are frustrating to encounter, I love that you aren't glossing over them and embracing the process and problem solving you go through to overcome them. Especially with your drive for perfection and curiosity for different approaches. Killer as always! ❤
Thanks Erik! Trying to keep it as real as possible even though it pains me to show all the mistakes 😜😂
Also thank you so much for showing the mistakes, your thought process and how you correct on the Fly. Invaluable! True craftsmanship, turning mistakes into a masterpiece. The final result looks like a fine piano! nice work
You’re welcome! Glad you enjoy my mishaps 😜. And thanks for the kind words!
It's great to show the mistakes and how you fixed them. A lot of the craft consists of knowing how to fix your mistakes, so thanks for not editing those out.
Glad it was helpful! I appreciate the comment. Definitely a lot of problem solving on this one.
Absolute best way to start the day is with a good old KJ video! Amazing work as always!
Thanks a ton! This one took way too long to get edited 😬😂
What a gorgeous desk! I didn't realize how much work goes into grain match!
Thanks Tom! It’s definitely a very important detail!
I always smile from ear to ear when I see you're released a new video; between your stellar narration, Jerry and Lola, and the projects themselves, it's just a quality watch all the way through. Thanks, and WOW I'm glad you were able to overcome the challenges on this one! Can't wait to see the next video.
Thank you, Delia! That is super kind of you and I greatly appreciate the comment and the support. Cheers! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
Keith. It’s so refreshing and reassuring to see a pro like you make a mistake here and there. I made 12 just yesterday lol
😂 Sounds like you had a delightful Friday. 😜
Truly, you have a dizzying intellect...😂 Great work Keith.
Thanks Rob! I look forward to your next aftershow question 😜
I'm so happy to see that I'm not the only one who messes up at almost every step. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! Mistakes are just part of the process, some more painful than others 😜😂
Love how you show your mistakes...and fixes to said mistakes. Great build my friend.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks a lot 👍
"So hopefully I wont make the same mistakes, I'll make new ones"
No truer words have been spoken my friend lol.. There's always something, nothing ever goes according to plan. That's for sure. But thats how we learn. You accommodate for one thing, then something else is like, "oh dont forget me" after its too late lol.
I really enjoy watching your vidoes. Im new to your channel, but love to see when people take pride in their work. Well done.
Also seeking your cat peek through that window like "hey you forgot about me." That was priceless lmao.
LOL. Yeah, unfortunately, you can't every plan for the unexpected. Thanks so much for the kind words and watching my videos. The 😺😺 and I appreciate it!
One valuable teaching I get from this video (and similar ones) is - that I am not the only one making mistakes...
Thanks.
You're not alone - we are all making them! 😂
I recall some years ago, some folks found it more cost-effective to make their own acoustic panels using layers of towels, over buying acoustic foam. "DIY Perks" channel demonstrates how much better the towels perform to muffle sound over cheaper packaging foams and pillows/cushions. "Soundproof Guide" channel mentions using a fire retardant spray for fabrics on the towels for extra safety.
Yeah, you can certainly make wooden frames and fill with Rockwool insulation and then cover with towels or fabric. That just isn't really the aesthetic I'm looking for.
Thanks for sharing Keith! I like the eye you have for design
Thanks very much! 🙌🏻
Such a phenomenal build, Keith! Can’t wait to see where you take this. Give Jerry and Lola a scritch for me!
Right on! Thank you! 😺😺
Wow. Thanks for making mistakes (and showing them). Makes us mere mortals feel better about screwing up😁
😂 They happen all too regularly
You take that back for the cat comment. They're SUPER helpful. lol and adorrrible. But honestly, your builds are INSANE! I love it.
😹 yeah, they have their moments, I suppose. Thanks Jennifer! 😊🙌🏻
You do wonderful work, but it makes my heart glad to see that no matter how hard we plan ahead, I'm.not the only one who has to make in project adjustments. 🙂
Thanks very much, Tyson! And yes, "adjustments" on the fly are all a part of the game 😜
You made enough screw ups to make me think I might have made it, only difference is you skillfully hid your mistakes.
It's all about problem solving and hopefully learning from those mistakes. 👍
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking isn't that the truth, anyone can make a mistake, not everyone can find a creative solution to hide it.
2 studio displays‽ Very nice.
I need all the real estate 😂
As this cat looks for its comfort zone,
It seems that they are choosing by looking beyond the curve that softens the corners.
A desk that takes advantage of its simple design is a relaxing place.
Hello from Japan.
Thank you very much 😺😺
Amazing job, and thank you that you show all mistake on video. Many woodworker on youtube channel only editing video and dont show any mistake.
Thank you very much! I try!
It was nice of Jerry to let you share the yoga mat.
He certainly wasn’t happy about it 😹
Now you need to add that copper band into the front of your desktop. Lol jk, i think this came out great. So much work for such a small desk. This is a prime example why perfectionist woodworkers like us are hard to find. So much goes into these things behind the scenes that most would never know. Bravo bud, well done.
That would be cool, but might be a bit over the top 😜
I’ll keep it simple your a legend
Thank you!! 🙏👊
Love the fact that you dropped NARDS in there!! Thank you for not editing mistakes. It's nice to see that even the masters make mistakes sometimes and they are ok. Beautiful desk!!
As soon as he said that, I thought, "Wolf Man's got _nards!"_ (I don't know how common the term is/was outside of "The Monster Squad", but that's where _I_ heard it.)
😂 Sometimes I'm a bit delirious when I do voice overs, so I'm glad I kept it relatively PG rated. And thanks for the kind words!
It definitely flies under the radar 😜
ooh, that desk top looks sweeeeet, Keith! Love the curve in the front, awesome design!
Thanks very much! I can't wait to actually use it 😜😂
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Nooo! Don't use it! I foresee dings and dents and cat paw scratches and cofee stains! 😄It'll be a great work place, for sure!
Jerry sure is social 🐈⬛
He’s the man! 😺
Very nice 👍👍👍
Thank you 🙏🏻👍🏻
Glad to learn of a new company! Mockett is a new one for me. Definitely checking them out!
Beautiful result!
Awesome! Thank you! And Mockett has tons of cool stuff to choose from.
They look great, but surge protection is not the same as Battery Backup. If you live in an area where power ever goes out, battery backup will actually protect your equipment and gives you time to turn things off properly.
It's not easy being a perfectionist Keith, but you nailed it in the end👏🏼
Haha. Thanks Mandy! Sometimes all that extra effort pays off 😉
I noticed the index finger of the right hand! the cat bit you:) just kidding. good job.I like that you work cleanly and think about what you do
Thank you! I think that was just a paper cut 😂
... THAT Kitty!!!!😃💓💓💓💓💓💓
😻😉
Beautiful job. If it's any consolation, I've been building cabinets and furniture for close to forty years and I still have those dog-gone-it moments. Thanks for being honest with the shortcomings, if nothing else it makes me feel a lot better.
Just when I think I'm going to cruise through a project...an avalanche of problems roll into the shop. LOL. Glad you can relate!!
The infamous table from the podcast. Looks incredible!
Thanks! It's finally done! LOL. And thanks for listening to the podcast 👊
Oh man, I've been there. You are chugging along and then boom problem. Sometimes they seem never to end. You handled them well!
Thanks man! Yeah, this was a true test of mental fortitude 😂
I watched the commissioned desk builds prior to watching this one. I somehow got out of order. It was very cool to see you react to the mistakes in this one. I like learning how to adjust when it's not a customers project, giving you the opportunity to fix it without rebuilding a whole bunch of the desk. With that in mind I'll probably watch this about 10-15 times and make notes. It's like a training course for dummy's
Glad it was useful! And yes, I learned a lot on the first one and it definitely helped me not make the same mistakes twice. It saved a lot of headaches.
Love your videos, KJ. This one felt particularly close to my heart. Seeing the screw ups, and how you dealt with them one after another, really shows what it’s like to be a woodworker! I laughed, I cried… Thanks!
Haha! yeah, mistakes and problem solving are all too real sometimes 😜😂
"since I pretty much only had 8/4 material..." What a subtle flex. 😀
😂 total unintentional flex, but I’m not ashamed 💪🏻😜
First-time I watched your video. I enjoy your humor and your supervisor. MAYBE I will be the craftsman you are. My wife tells me I can not even paint? I painted our bathroom. Then she tells me I put the paint on upside down. 😢
😂 I think she enjoys giving you a hard time!!
Hot damn, that intro got me hooked! 🤣
Good to know! Thanks! 🙌
Love the Seinfeld clips. That show pretty much molded my sense of humor as a teenager.
Same!! 😂
A great job done with your own hands, as always. But this time it has baffled me, that with the perfectionist that you are, you have had those problems in the project, it is not normal for you.
Congratulations and continue creating these wooden beauties.
There are always multiple problems or mistakes… I just don’t always share them all or the video would be way too long 😜
The job is very nice
Man I love this video! So casual, approachable, and you’re really hitting on the minutia of everything without going into detail about some of the standard stuff. Appreciate the effort and info!!
I appreciate that! Thanks very much for watching and the comment 👍🙌
You always kill it! Looks great. Love seeing the F ups too, so mortals like me don’t feel so bad making dumb mistakes. Looking forward to the floating shelves as I’m starting a set with a 90-degree turn on one.
Thanks man! I didn't even share ALL the mistakes...otherwise the video would have been an hour long 😬😂
Thanks for the video KJ. Your uploads are the ones to which I most look forward every time. You are an inspiration to me, I wish someday I'll come close to your skill level. The midset of making it as perfect as you can instead of just "good enough" is also admirable... thank you very much for these master classes
That's very kind of you and I greatly appreciate the comments. Thank you so much for watching and all of your support! Cheers!
Great vid and project. Thanks for sharing the reality of the process with challengesand solutions - including the trepidation in moving on to next and risky steps.
Glad it was helpful! And I appreciate the comment - thanks!
Looks great. Man that's some craftsmanship right there
Much appreciated. Thank you! 🙌🏻
Maestro, I’m not sure how you only have 300k subscribers. Looking forward to watching your channel continue to grow and hit 500k and then 1 million. Beautiful desk, loved seeing the solutions to the snags.
I appreciate that! Just plugging along picking up valuable subs like yourself who actually watch the videos! 😜
Keith as always I learn from your builds. Love it. I always think that I have an attention to detail, until I see what you do.... Thanks for teaching me what that actually means.
Thank you Bob! I always appreciate the support and the kind words. So glad to hear these video are helpful and enjoyable 🙏🏻😁
I just loved this video. Thank you. Like the previous comment, I also really appreciate you recording the mistakes. These are the places where I learn the most! I'm building a desk right now and will be reviewing this video again for your techniques. Thanks again!
Glad it was helpful! Hopefully my mistakes help to avoid any of your own 😜
Bad ass work. I'm about to put a bar counter in a wide space in my basement and was thinking how i was going to make the corners not being squared work and your template is exactly how i'll do it now. Thank you!
Oh right on! Works like a champ 👍🏻
Hmmmm I love me some bendy woods. Great job as usual Keith
you couldn't have even watched the video yet!
Thanks! Me too 😜
Since you have tabletop gap(s) along the wall, you can always mask off the top and then apply some plaster to the wall and feather it out. Sand and apply texture(if needed) to the wall to blend in. Nice work and video!
Thanks very much!
Oh so very nice!
Thank you! 🙏🏻😁
I just love your channel Keith. Your videos are so well done, no nonsense and you show when you make a mistake (obviously we all do) rather than skip over or hide it.
I think Jerry is the coolest cat, he could care less that he is in your way. It adds a little something to your videos and makes me wish I had a cat like him. The cat door is very clever and well done. Keep up the good work and I hope you get another 300k sub's, you deserve it.
Thank you so much for the kind words! Jerry is definitely one of a kind...he keeps me company all day. 😺
Amazing build as always Keith it turned out beautiful can’t wait to see it finished
Thanks man! Hopefully I can wrap this thing up in the next few weeks!
Great build! You are probably the best content creator for me right now. I mean you deal with all of us (your audience) and Jerry and Lola’s continual judgment! Thanks for sharing your hard work.
I appreciate that, John! Thanks very much for the comment and for checking out my videos. Jerry and Lola appreciate it, too 😜😺😺
Fantastic build. And as someone who has said WTF many time, and I mean many many many times, in my shop before, I really laughed when you realized your front piece was too short. We have all been there, man. Love this! I also love those Mockett power banks. I will be picking up some myself, for sure.
😂 Glad I’m not alone! It was anger, sadness, embarrassment and disbelief all at the same time. The perfect storm of mistakes.
Very well done! I always learn something from your videos / projects - thank you for sharing. Looking forward to the next steps!
Thanks Curtis! That’s awesome to hear. Glad you find the videos helpful. 🤙🏻
Awesome desk. I especially like the curved front. One suggestion since you had to need thin kerfs for the drawer fronts. I use 7-1/2" circular saw blades. Their kerf is approximately1/16" and they fit my table saw arbor. I know it's only 1/32" difference, but it can make quite a difference when trying to maintain your grain match.
Cool! Thanks for the tip!
Alright Keith! Love the video and the desk turned out really great. My favorite part was "Okay, now for the next butt clenching operation". Looking forward to the follow ons.
😂 Just wanted to give everyone an accurate description and visual of what was about to happen!
Very nice build!!
Thanks a lot!
Hey Keith - super fun build/video. As always, appreciate you walking us through all the kawazi bone-head mistakes and creative solutions haha. Makes for a fun and authentic ride!
Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely some bone-head mistakes on this one 😂
nice one!!! i like you show your mistake ... we all do some even the pros!!! i like your content thx for sharing
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy the mistakes. Hopefully I make less in the future, though 😜😂
thanks for the kerf tip
No problem!
Awesome build
Thanks a lot!
Two studio displays, nice
Didn’t have enough wall space for three 😜
Love the cat…❤️
Thanks! 😺😺
Sorry I am late, was out of town. Absolutely fantastic build. As always I learned from you. Thanks for taking the time to share!
No worries! Thanks David!
Awesome work, it looks amazing. I am waiting for next video.

Outstanding brother. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your video. Thanks for sharing. GBU
Thank you kindly! I greatly appreciate it 👊
What a beauty! Great work!
Thank you very much!
Another beautiful piece. If it wasn't for the screw-ups, woodworking would be such a boring hobby and/or profession. Lucky for me, I'm very good at keeping it interesting ....
Great point! LOL. Although, I wouldn't be mad if at least ONE project was smooth sailing 😂
Outstanding workmanship 👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
So cool love it..... and the cats.
Thanks Bill! The shop cats keep me sane even though they drive me crazy 😹
Nice built.
Thanks! 🙌
Jerry and Lola need their own channel
When they stop clawing the couch like wild animals, I’ll consider it.
Stunning work, Keith! Really well done! 😃
The design looks amazing!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you, my friend!! 🤙🏻😎
Love it Kj 👌

Beep = funny. 😂
Very beautiful! I really want to try kerf bent wood soon!
Go for it! It's pretty cool!
Fantastic mate 👍 really love the cat door, totally need one of those
Thanks 👍! Hopefully the little fur balls actually use it 😹
beautiful job Keith. Love the honesty. I am starting to get a little weary of walnut though. I did a project in ash the other day. Grain was gorgeous.
Don't get too used to ash...it will all be gone soon enough 😬😜
True enough. @@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking

"how did i even do that" & "WTF" are statements i use way more than i would like. hah.
