    If I could tell myself one word of advice it would be to keep growing past the 3 month mark. I had patches in my cheeks when I was younger that would have totally covered over as gravity pulled my hairs down but I always chickened out at 3 months and chopped it off.

    Two things I wish I had taken to heart was genetics and age. I had wanted a beard since I was little, and when I got to about 19 I would try to grow one but it was scraggly and just not good. But as I aged, it finally sorted itself and now I have a full beard. But I was way too hard on myself at 19. It just takes some people more time, and some people just don't have the genes for body hair of any sort.

    I swear by these tips and I'm so grateful to have found this channel. I never thought I could grow a decent beard. Always patchy and scraggly. Six months ago I started watching these videos and applying the advice. I went to a barber for my very first professional beard trim about 2 months ago and I got 2 compliments on my beard, one from the barber, and one from another customer waiting his turn. I recommended this channel to the guy and it was then that I realized my beard is in fact pretty sweet. Full, smooth, and damn sexy. My wife loves it too. Thank You!!!

      Hydrant Hydrocram what did you do to help grow your beard?

    • @hydranthydrocram1117
      @hydranthydrocram1117 5 лет назад +1

      @@KimJongChill I followed the advice in these videos as best I could. I stopped trimming it every time it started getting bushy and just let it grow. The ugly growth stage is temporary, you just have to be patient until it passes. Once you have enough beard to really work with then you can start trimming and shaping. I started using product...beard oils and balms. They really do work to soften the beard and prevent itching and irritation. Using a hair dryer on low setting with a beard brush to straighten takes only a couple minutes but works great. The best thing, as was said at the end of this video, is the compliments. I get a lot now. I see a lot of men with awesome beards that I envy, but there are people all over who think the same thing about my beard. Its great. Keep watching BeardTube

    • @chriscobble48
      @chriscobble48 7 лет назад

      @zac davis, Try washing your beard every other day. Sometimes the acne comes from buildup of oils and dirt. Most beard balms and oils can help moisturize and protect your skin, but you still have to do some good cleaning pretty often. Using balms on a freshly washed beard will work wonders, as well. I'm not saying you have poor hygiene or anything, but maybe change your washing/balming habits and see if it helps any.
      I've been using Honest Amish since I started growing mine, and haven't had any issues. Then again, it could just be something in their formula that doesn't work for you!

    One to add would be to keep your hand off it. No scratching, finger combing or playing with it. That also irritates the skin and wipes the natural oils off your beard. It also break hairs and causes them to get brittle.

    what I found out for me is native coconut oil beats every beardoil you can purchase. Since beardoil is more for your skin underneath your beard, coconutoil can be used anywhere on your body. is has a disinfectant effect on the skin, moisters it and even your beard will get super soft within a 2-3 times applying it! and the best: soooo much cheaper than beardoil. give it a try, you won't regret :)

    There are going to be points when your beard looks like absolute crap and will want to shave it off. I'd say give yourself a week before going ahead with it. When you are in the moment, it's easy to just lose focus. Just like bad hair days, you will have bad beard days. Also you will have different stages of growth when it won't look great, just give it time.

    Keep your expectations low. Each beard will be different and might not end up looking like what you want it to be. The first year is the most critical and you will learn alot about yourself in that time. Don't trim if you have a bad beard day. Only trim when your beard is dry. Wet beard is a no no.

    I've been trying to grow a beard for the past 3 years. I couldn't get past the weird phase during the first 90 days. It wasn't itchy or bothering me, it just didn't look healthy. I tried baby lotion and other types of lotion but nothing worked. Finally just recently I said the hell with it and just let it grow for the past 4 months. Just a week or 2 ago I found these videos and others that gave great advice. I won't have the money to get a good beard balm until after the holidays but I did get some coconut oil today. And holy shit, it is a night and day difference. I washed it real good, trimmed my cheeks and neck. Then put the oil one it. Tonight my hair is soft my skin doesn't feel or look like crocodile skin and there is a healthy shine to it. It blows my mind what a difference putting correct stuff in it makes. I'll probably forgo buying a balm and just make my own. I watched one of your videos today about making it and I can't wait to see how mine turns out. Thanks for posting this stuff dude, you're a life saver.

    I agree with most of your tips with the exception of your view on conditioner use. I most definitely use a conditioner, I could not get by without it. Have you ever heard of co-washing? It's when you use a conditioner as a shampoo. I do that on the days that I don't wash the beard and it works great. Do you watch George Bruno here on youtube? I "flick" my beard dry, definitely no sullfates or shampoo in the beard. Condition every now and then, oil DAILY. I use about two eye droppers worth, it's a lot though I can afford it (I make my own oils). It's so soft. My beard is medium length, only about reaching the adam's apple. It's big enough for people to say "wow, big beard/good beard" if that provides context. Nothing crazy or special though.

    Has anyone had an "invisible" beard? Let me explain. Years ago I shaved my beard partially to try a goatee instead. Before that, I was wearing it shortly trimmed, but full (and no, it's not thin or patchy, it's pretty dense). *Several* people at work commented that they hadn't noticed that I was growing a goatee. When I told them I had a full beard before, they were stunned - they had never noticed it! They only noticed it when I actually *shaved* part of it!
    More recently, a distant cousin who lives in another city and whom I have met in person only a handful of times, but other than once when we were kids had only seen me bearded, found my pictures on the Internet and commented to me over e-mail that she had seen that "now" I was wearing a beard. I said: "What do you mean, 'now'? I've had a beard for over 30 years!" She didn't know what to say...
    Maybe it's because my beard is so much a part of me that people don't see it as a separate thing (which it really isn't), as something to be "worn"...

    • @goytabr
      @goytabr 3 года назад

      @Brayan Morgan, no, it was a real beard. It just wasn't prophet-length at that time (now it's almost there, my profile pic is outdated) and it was neatly trimmed, but it was full and dense. Think Richard Karn in "Home Improvement" or Zach Galifianakis in "The Hangover." I don't think you'd call either of them a "stubble."

    I always had a short, neatly trimmed goatee, but never had a full beard until last year. When I decided to let it go and let it grow, I became frustrated with that awkward stage of beard growing when the sides were too short and stuck out no matter what I did and the chin part stuck too far forward in a point, so I kept on hackin away at it to try to shape it...no good! Now, I have began only trimming the beard to shape it slightly, but never hack away at it as I had previously done. I let it go and dealt with the stage where it doesnt look great. I have also begun using beard butter, beard balm and beard oil...THAT makes all of the difference..I can shape it and it stays. My advice is...don't keep cutting it...you'll never get there if you do and, use beard products to train it...they're all great!

    How do you deal with negative reactions to having a bigger beard? Was in the elevator at work with a woman I've never seen before, a complete stranger. She looks at me and asks "how long have you been growing your beard?" I'm thinking she's about to toss me a compliment because I do get compliments here and there. I proudly respond "7 months."
    Her demeanor changes a little bit and I can feel the negativity she says "7 months?! Don't you think it's about time to cut it?"
    I was speechless and totally thrown for a loop as to why a perfect stranger could feel she could comment on my personal grooming. I mean I keep it neat and clean. Cheekline always sharp, oil, balm, comb, brush and shaped on the daily.
    Sorry for being long winded but what are some good ways to deal with these types of situations?

    • @BeardTube
      @BeardTube  7 лет назад +80

      Oh wow, I honestly don't think I have ever had that negative of a reaction to my beard. I guess if it happened, I would insult their breath and just remember there's like 1 person that will say something bad about it, and 1000 that will give you a beard compliment

      Ask her when the last time she showered was. If she says last night say damn! Last night?! Don't you think it's about time for another one? If she say this morning, just say damn could've fooled me about time for another one.

      When "adults" say things like this I instantly go into "this person is not all there" mode. I'd respond just as I would to a child. I'd laugh and say something like you think so? Why do you say that? Think of kids say the darnest things... that's the vibe. Really any person who thinks that's okay to say is not probably all there on some level. Trust me when I say your day will be a lot better if you laugh and wish them a good day. Tell your story on your terms " I met this crazy person on the elevator". Just my take! Hope she didn't discourage you.

BUT, I wash my beard specifically, twice a week with Prof. Fuzzworth. Is that the idea? Also make sure you use a boars hair brush before during qnd after washing your beard when it is really thick. This helps pull all the dead skin out from the beard. I never have split ends using this method and my beard is long and thick. Take care of your beards men. You'll be happier with it and so will your girl.

    I am going for a yeard (one year beard). Three months in, I am enjoying my beard, it's quite full and long, not a 10/10, but, maybe atleast 7 or 8.
    I am going for the "homeless man" look (seriously!)
    At what month mark will I be seeing that out of control crazy beard look popping up?

      If you want the homeless man look, you'll have the easiest time growing a beard lol. I bet at about 7 months, you'll look back at pics of you earlier in the year and you'll notice a big difference

      ScubaTube I would be eagerly waiting for that seventh month mark!
      And yeah, the maintenance is minimal, but the reactions from the people around, are harsh!
      It requires serious motivation to keep the out-of-control beard going.
      And thankfully you guys are there to help us out!
      Thanks Scuba!

    I'm doing the no shave November thing and my beard is growing in fast! I'm actually getting compliments already and people telling me I look good with a beard, and other people giving me tips. I'm in my 40's and I've never grown a beard but always new my face was meant for one. My problem is I did the no shave nov. As an excuse not to shave every day, but to grow a beard, but now I'm thinking I should, but maintaining a bread sounds like a lot more work than shaving everyday, idk if it's worth it?

      Your best bet is to do what makes you happy. If it's not a pleasant experience or if you don't like the way it looks, then I wouldn't do it

      I still have to the end of the month to decide, but I think I'm going to grow it out. I'm obviously meant to have facial hair so why fight it. Thanks for the helpful tips in your video I'll definitely use them!

      I kept a clean shave until I was 23 and a buddy of mine got me to do no shave Nov and I've had a beard ever since, 5 years now. I kept it short until about 4 months ago. My cousin kept nagging me to grow it out like his and boom here I am growing it out and watching these beard tip videos.

    how to rub the bread correctly with oils and balms. Not to rub its like a shampoo. Thats a great tip. Causes your beard to curl out. I just learned this today from a great friend.

    I would have told myself not to enlist and keep growing the beard. Starting all over again nearly a decade later.

    Wow! What a great video Scuba. I've always had a beard for about 20+ years but I never let it grow as I'm doing now. I'm actually 6 weeks into my beard growth journey and it is coming in pretty nicely. However, I am one that trimmed according to the jawline. SMH! Now, I have to let all of that underneath grow in to get this beard on point like it needs to be. Thanks for the insights bro!

      Yea, you just have to give it time to let it grow out. Don't shave all your other hair, just keep it trimmed and eventually the two sections will match.
