    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After running into each other, Tom (Josephn Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel) have one last conversation about true love.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel star in director Marc Webb's wry, nonlinear romantic comedy about a man who falls head over heels for a woman who doesn't believe in love. Tom (Gordon-Levitt) is an aspiring architect who currently earns his living as a greeting card writer. Upon encountering his boss' beautiful new secretary, Summer (Deschanel), Tom discovers that the pair have plenty in common despite the fact that she's seemingly out of his league; for starters, they both love the Smiths, and they're both fans of surrealist artist Magritte. Before long Tom is smitten. All he can think about is Summer. Tom believes deeply in the concept of soul mates, and he's finally found his. Unfortunately for Tom, Summer sees true love as the stuff of fairy tales, and isn't looking for romance. Undaunted and undeterred by his breezy lover's casual stance on relationships, Tom summons all of his might and courage to pursue Summer and convince her that their love is real.

@@artimiti What people call love vs what love actually is, it's completely different. The love shown in most movies is about finding a person that makes you into this twisted soul without them and shows you to be a better person with them in the end. Real love is letting the person go when you know they might make you feel whole and complete because you know that you can't give them the thing in life they want and deserve. Without any hidden motivation or telling them why and what you are feeling, since that will just put them in a position of having to choose right in the moment which isn't fair to them. It hurts but not as much as it does knowing you have hurt someone you care about, and you are able to live with yourself easier knowing they are better off without you and you actually care about their happiness over your own.
In the long run your not missing much.

I was in the same exact situation a couple years ago when I broke up with my ex gf. In fact, I watched this movie shortly after. It really made sense to me. I did the exact same thing Tom did - I projected my dream girl onto her, I enforced my feelings to her, tried my best to win her heart. In the end it was all for nothing, and the idiot was none other than myself. But Summer did one thing that my ex never did and it was this. She never gave me an explanation or a closure. We never talked after we broke up and can't blame her for that. In the end, I had to make my own explanation. What Summer did here was an act of kindness, something that Tom deserved at least. I'm just thankful that I watched this movie because it was as if Summer was talking to me as well - we laughed, we loved and we tried, but she isn't the one.

there's nothing wrong in projecting your dream girl onto a girl, it's not about that. this movie is more than about that.

  • @spencemace

The genius of this movie is that the 500 days are not of their relationship. They continue after they've broken up, because to Tom it still feels like she has a hold of him, and the process of letting Summer go takes even longer than the time they spent together (or they're at least comparable, I can't remember it's been some time since I actually saw the film). I just think that's so like life; Summer in't even in Tom's life anymore, married someone else and they don't interact on a regular basis, but every day that goes by till the 500th is hers is Tom's mind because she is still deeply imbedded in his psyche.

And it's also super realistic. I was in a relationship with similar dynamics almost three years ago for nine months, and I still feel like he has a little bit of grip over my life, even though we haven't seen each other for two years.
Sometimes we accidentally get hurt so badly, that the pain and the love form a lasting impression on you, even after you've moved on with someone new. As long as there is a tiny part of your soul that does not want to let go, it will always feel like a small sting to see the other person's name pop up somewhere.
I always come back to this movie because it is the most relatable one for me and I'm very glad to see a movie that shows the ongoing struggles of not being able to part 100% with someone. It's not healthy, and I'm glad that this movie shows that it's not healthy to be this hung up on it.

I don't think that was the case I think at that moment he realized it was hard for her to be there with him and she was also hurting in some type of way. when a relationship ends regardless of who ended it...it hurts. summer might not have wanted a relationship but she still cared for TOM and she knew how her actions affected him. she knew he was hurting and so was she in her own way. I don't think tom still wanted to be with her after her playing with his emotions and then getting married shortly after the breakup.

What I love about this scene and most people don't realize is that Summer is doing Tom a favor. She's setting him free from her so he can start over again, also admitting to him that his point that true love exists was true. It hurts when you love someone and it just doesn't work out, but it hurts even more when you're imprisoned with that situation forever. Most of the time you have to search for the way out by yourself, you have to realize it, no one shows you the door. But summer, as hard and brutally honest she is in here, shows Tom the way out and manages to kill his ilussions (in case he still had any left) so he can start over. For me this is a bittersweet scene, because it really portrays those real life situations where everything is said, everything is over, but you can finally be free to move on.

You end up appreciating people like summer in your life.
She kept 100% honest right from the beginning and told you what she was about.
Then when things ended, she wasn’t bitter or angry or spiteful.
Then when you reconnect, she’s genuinely caring, respectful and glad to see you’re doing well.

    • @crater044
      @crater044 2 года назад +83

Umm not necessarily. She wasn't angry, bitter or spiteful of anything because she didn't see Tom as the love of her life......but that still doesn't mean that she didn't do things wrong. And I wouldn't say she was 100% honest.......she did lie to him about being involved in a relationship when they were dancing at the wedding and being on the train, she failed to give Tom proper answers to genuine questions he was asking by just either ignoring the questions or avoiding them. She did say that she wanted to just be friends (setting a boundary) and then the next time she saw him, she made out with him in the copy room (breaking that boundary herself) before setting up a new boundary (casual relationship) but then the two proceeding to do things that a normal couple would do (forcing people to ask them what are they and even assuming they are a couple) but then pulling the "I like you Tom as a friend" card when challenged on the question of what they actually are then going back to the person (like she did after their blow up) to continue whatever it is they have despite the fact that he had already made his case known of what he wanted (to be a couple). Sure, once you get past the sadness of no longer being in love with someone that you truly were in love with do you appreciate the lessons you learned from them but at the same time, Summer didn't have the feelings for Tom that he had for her so it's easier for her to move on and be more comfortable. And again, while she may have been "100 % honest" in the beginning, you can't predict how your feelings will be months from that moment and the closer you get to a person.
We should appreciate the fact that Tom was very much genuine when he told her that he hoped she was happy (which is a very mature thing for him to do). We should appreciate that Summer gave Tom the closure that we know most people would never give the other in actual reality. We should appreciate Tom for getting his life together and taking the lessons learned from his relationship with Summer. We should appreciate the lessons Summer took from her relationship with Tom. But I wouldn't say we should appreciate having a Summer in our lives.........because while we might learn an important lesson and she might treat us with kindness upon reconnection, the road to get there is very ugly full of confusion, anger, tears, depression and miscommunication.....but once you get through that dark tunnel, personal growth happens.
Plus, I think the Summers of the world should appreciate having a Tom come into their lives and challenge their theories on what love is.

This movie teaches you so much. We fall in love but it isn't always with the right person for us. Or someone falls in love with you but you are not the right person for them. I was in both sides of the aisle. The lesson I got was that rejection is the worst thing in the world. Painful, scary and extremely educating. Once you get rejected you only have two choices. Fall into depression, become a cynic and give up on anything resembling an attempt to find what you were looking for, ever again. And the second choice is fall into depression, and learn from it. Do not allow yourself to fall into the trap of blaming yourself for who you are and what you are. Rejection teaches the single greatest lesson; you are what you are, do not punish yourself for that. Accept it, and the rejection turns into a blessing.

My heart breaks every time I watch this scene, it makes me so emotional. It was so well done. Just like Summer tells Tom he was right, it was just her he was wrong about. And that’s the thing, when we are drawn to someone and have feelings we blind ourselves to all the other signs that are literally right in front of our face, Summer was just dating, and experiencing and seeing what she did and didn’t want, yet Tom was seeing her immediately as the end game while ignoring her obvious behaviours of not being fully in the relationship. I’m sure we’ve all been there, but I loved how he got some closure, not all of us do in life. But you move on, and just like she found her right person, Tom eventually will too.

I love the fact that the movie doesn't pick a side. It doesn't outright say Tom was right or that Summer was right. At the beginning of the movie, both of them have ways of thinking that have bases in reality but have not yet been tested by personal experience. By the end, both of them have changed and grown thanks to one another and their experiences together.

This movie really was so well done. The pain of wondering why you weren't the one, feeling like there was something wrong with you. We've all been there. It's only now as I've gotten a little bit older that I came to realize at one point that a lot of the time in these situations it isn't that anyone was lacking anything, but more that two people just aren't the right fit. It took me so long to see that, so much feeling bad about myself and feeling so confused. In one of my relationships in the past I felt so confused and we'd have disagreements all the time and it just seemed so hard, and very confusing. But I think even just the fact that we feel so confused as to WHY someone says something/is the way they are just shows even more that it was just not the right fit. And funnily enough, there is nothing wrong with just not being the right fit. It means they were also not the right fit for you, and there's nothing wrong with that. We just need to go and find that right person, because when you do meet the person who is right for you, nothing is confusing anymore, and everything just makes sense. I realized this all so clearly when I met my husband about two years ago, and within one year we were married. I never believed it could be true before, but it really gave me perspective on why everything before never worked out.

Feeling so sorry for Tom. I understand that it is true that Tom kind of ignored the fact that Summer did say she didn't want a relationship but feelings are hard to predict - especially with all the couple and intimate things they do with each other (kissing, holding hands, talking about personal feelings, sex etc.), it's totally understandable that even if both parties agree to enter into a relationship with the mindset of having fun, one of them will most probably develop feelings for the other. I mean, what happened if the roles got switched and Summer was the one to develop feelings for Tom? It really doesn't matter if you tell someone "I don't want a relationship" because just saying it doesn't really exempt you from hurting the other person's feelings in the end if they really did love you. It's only natural for Tom to want to spend time with Summer because he would've felt like he could change Summer's mind - and this might happen but it also might not. And yes, he should've realised and cut it off completely if he knew he was going to get hurt instead of going back in. I just feel that if Summer was perfectly set on just wanting to be friends with Tom, then she should've stuck with it and not venture into all the romantic things that couples typically do like hold hands, kiss, share feelings etc. Personally, I feel it's a bit too much if Summer continued to heavily shower Tom with hints and getting his hopes up, just to watch it crash down again and then to justify herself, said I told you so. She should've shown him and answered his question when Tom asked "what are we?" instead of saying "who cares". I'm really not trying to antagonise Summer because I get that relationships are messy and feelings get hurt either intentionally or accidentally and no one is really to blame but sometimes, I just don't understand what went through Summer's mind. It'd be really cool if they made a movie from Summer's perspective, so to speak.

Summer really liked Tom, the very essence of the movie is that Tom was just inconsistent and not alpha to lead the relationship especially into marriage. Don't blame Summer, she already lead most time in their relationship, which should be the DUTY of Tom in the first place.
Also women don't usually say what they want, they just give signals to guys, and it showed clearly in the movie that Summer gave a lot of CLEAR signals to Tom to escalate further, he just wouldn't get it.
Hope you watched it again and see the side of Summer :)

So he fell in love with the idea of Summer.
Summer didn't fall in love at all. At the wedding part I can see that she just wanted to repair the friendship, but because we are seeing the whole movie through Tom' eyes, we saw it like how he saw it, a second chance.

The character of Tom actually portrayed the inner feeling of people: sometimes we realized how awful love might be but we are eager for it so desperately. From the confusion of Tom’s expression, I strongly feel the moment that people want to give up faith but can’t get out with it, probably we still depend on our innocence and purity. Thanks for 500 days of summer, neither ones are wrong, the only thing wrong is the time.

I said what was on my chest for years and she said in another place or time it might’ve been all well but we weren’t meant to work out. The first time I watched this movie was when I was in relationships. The second time was after we broke up, and it hit much harder.
I remember that in the end of our relationships, it almost always felt like she didn't feel like she could rely on me. After we broke up and then met much later, she described her new boyfriend and that she never felt like she had to force herself to trust him. She just did. I felt exactly like Tom at this moment. It's only after looking back at the relationships that you realize how much you took for granted and also how many things were going not right.
The breakup turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I'm now much more focused on myself, on my education and my hobbies. I think that if one day I'll come back to this comment years later, I'll be proud and grateful that I went through this.

  • @azumarill964
    @azumarill964 4 месяца назад +3

I just watched this movie for the first time today, and this is the most important thing I took from it: the role of chance in our lives. We often idealize our future, and how if we get that dream job or dream girl everything will be sunshine and rainbows. And when inevitably one of our expectations doesn’t become a reality we not only become upset, we try to bargain our way to them through the past. Your brain starts going through fake scenarios, what if you had worked for a better grade last semester? What if you had talked to that girl on another day? What if you had done something differently? But life doesn’t always take you through the path you want to traverse, and that’s not a bad thing. Both Tom and Summer exemplified this. Tom envisioned Summer as his dream girl for more than a year, but it didn’t work out for whatever reason, while Summer was at a certain cafe reading a certain book at a certain hour that led her to meet her future husband. Life has no rules, it’s just chance. And even though you may spend too much time considering what you could’ve done differently, you should still celebrate those things you have in your life only because you were at the right place and time, all of the bonds you’ve formed, all of the friends you have made, etc.

@@robrick9361 I think we’re supposed to pick up on a certain sentiment when she said that her husband asked her for her opinion on the book she was reading. The whole movie has been Tom projecting his fantasies on Summer and never seeing her as she is, which is a normal person with feelings and dreams and hobbies and aspirations. He never seems to be invested in what she actually thinks about something and tries to fight her on her feelings even when she is being open and honest about how she feels about him. From that sentence, to me it came across as Summer’s husband values her input and opinions on things and wants to know the real her, not whatever image he has o her in his head. This is something Tom never did or realized until the very end, which is why Summer and Tom could never work as he is, but Summer and her husband could. This scene really resonated with me the first time I saw this film. My first love was unrequited and I loved her from sixteen to around eighteen years old, there was never any hope of being with her. I was so afraid to lose the friendship we shared that I waited a long time to tell her and to attempt moving on, and right after I did she found her own first love. Seeing her with him broke my heart and changed who I was as a person because of how painful it was, but it also taught me it just wasn’t meant to be and we weren’t right for each other. This movie means a lot to me as it portrays perfectly the helplessness and darkness of one sided love, but also the process of healing and learning to be okay on your own. For a long time I resented myself for not being “ enough “ for her, but we aren’t born to be fit for others and belong to them. We must first love ourselves.

There's no villain or hero here. Just two individuals who are trying their best to satisy their unmet needs and couldn't find it in each other. They BOTH went about it the wrong way, Summer stringing him along and Tom refusing to see her for who she is and what she wanted. The biggest takeaway for me personally is that at the end of it all, we should just make peace with what has happened and allow ourselves to learn the lessons. The moment Tom decides to let her go and move forward, a new door opened up for him. A new life. A new beginning. I hope that anyone reading this knows that just because someone you love decides to walk away from you, doesn't mean you won't find happiness again.

Watch this scene first, only focusing on Summer. Then do the same only watching Tom. You'll see two very different perspectives and performances.
Below is my interpretation of each of their feelings.
Summer is hopeful and at peace about the past. She realises she was wrong and has embraced her learning. She is kind enough to reach out to Tom and explain how she really felt (which usually doesn't happen in real life). She wants the best for Tom and still has a soft spot for him, but she's able to put boundaries on her feelings.
But Tom is bitter, confused, angry, bittersweet and not sure if he wants to shout or cry. He feels he has learnt something too...until Summer tells him that's the wrong way to look at it. And now he doesn't know whether to focus on this new revelation (that maybe the world isn't bad), or simply to focus on the beautiful and mesmerising woman he still hasn't let go of. From 1:10 to 1:42.
    -The shrug of the shoulders
-the unconvinced way he says "no"
-the clench of the teeth as he swallows his feelings.

Summer has learned that just because her parents got divorced (because people make mistakes) doesn't mean that love doesn't exist, and she learned to open herself to the possibility of it because even though relationships can get messy, sometimes you still take a chance on a relationship because you've met someone you want to take that chance with. No, love isn't the only thing in the world that can make you happy, and not all marriages last, but that doesn't mean that you should close yourself off to the possibility of love. Being independent and happy with yourself doesn't mean saying 'there's no such thing as love', it means saying 'maybe I'll fall in love, maybe I won't, but for now, I'm happy with my life, and if something comes along to change my life, I know I'll find the strength to face it'.
Tom by the end of the movie may need to learn that lesson though I think he's starting to when he asks Autumn out. Just because a relationship didn't work out doesn't mean that love doesn't exist, and it doesn't give you the right to treat people as badly as he's been treating people. Because love in itself might be simple but a relationship takes work, both parties have to give and take rather than just demand everything you want from the other person which is what he was doing, trying to make her fit his image of her and what their relationship should be. And here's hoping when he realises that about romantic relationships then he'll also realise that about other relationships - with the people you work with, with your family, with your friends, because to have good relationship with them you need to learn not to just see them as people you can dump all of your problems onto.

    • @crater044

"Just because a relationship didn't work out doesn't mean that love doesn't exist, and it doesn't give you the right to treat people as badly as he's been treating people. Because love in itself might be simple but a relationship takes work, both parties have to give and take rather than just demand everything you want from the other person which is what he was doing, trying to make her fit his image of her and what their relationship should be."
The same can be said for her. Both partners were trying to fit square pegs into round holes and both just assumed that the other would be ok with whatever they wanted.......she had an image of him that she was trying to fit unto him that didn't work, which is why she wasn't completely sure about him. Again, Tom did this to her as well but I don't get that Summer had the mindset of "maybe I'll fall in love, maybe I won't", that's not how she spoke at the bar. They literally disagreed about the idea of love. Personally, I think she did try becoming open to the idea of it throughout the relationship but, with the pressure Tom had placed on her and with her own commitment issues that she talked about, she became unhappy (I personally think Tom is the longest "relationship" she's ever had) because she knew this wasn't going to work. She had more maturity to see that end game before he did but also, at the same time, that was also based on her preconceived notion of how relationships go (and Tom's unwillingness to take her hints at him dumping the greeting card job to actually follow his dream of being an architect, which will always be something I'll defend Summer on and hold Tom's feet over the fire for). I just think the two did put pressure on the other and had this idea about the other that the other just wasn't comfortable in being. Happens often in relationships......neither one is a villain but both were wrong in some way yet they also managed to take important lessons learned and applied them to the next relationship.

Tom did the wrong thing. He projected an ideal onto Summer and failed to see her complexity as a person. The moment she felt actually seen by a guy, no wonder she fell in love. Having a bad relationship can sometimes make it easier to have a good one, because you can compare those feelings and realise ‘what was missing’.
Tom needed to find his own place in the world, and not focus so much on this idea of ‘the one’. If anything he should’ve left as soon as Summer said she didn’t want anything serious, because he knew he wanted something serious. Summer also should’ve not played into his fantasies because she could probably see he was imagining a future with her when she didn’t want that.
It hurt them both being together, and that isn’t love.
I’ve been both a Summer and a Tom. I had a boyfriend who I projected such ideals on and he projected them onto me. He broke up with me, but still claimed to be in love with me, which made it hard to let go. Watching this film made me realise something very painful, that I wasn’t in love with him, and I so didn’t want to grow up and marry him.
He claimed it was fate we met, and so did I. It put overwhelming pressure on the both of us.
He, like Tom. Failed to see who I was and I never felt seen in our relationship. I know I loved him, but I can’t be in love with him. Only an idea of him, and relationships can’t be built on fantasies.

Yeah, pal. You don't understand waht you're talking about one bit. Everybody is in love with only the idea of somebody, because humans are limited creatures, there are things that nobody knows about you, and therefore, the only "you" they know is the idea of "you" that is incomplete. And that's all it's going to happen.
Keep it real and get back to reality, relationships are always imperfect, there's no "the one", feelings come and go. Not realizing this imperfection is why 41% of first marriages ends up in bitter divorce, and countless more in unhappiness.

I put in my all for that relationship but I was oblivious to the flags. Years have passed after we broke up. She started to reach out to me again. As if nothing had happened. Starting talking to me. Being extra friendly. One problem, she is engaged. I let this go on for a little bit. What I didn't like is that she tried to get back into my life, whether just to be friends or whatever. When I finally confronted her about the engagement. It put a stop in her trying to contact me.
