It's really a shame that online playability for those games had to come to an end. I remember playing all of them on Windows XP, but I wish I played one of them on a Windows ME virtual machine while I could.
Could'int someone make a fan patch to make these work online, but using some other server that is'int the official ones, like picking a server to run to play?

I'm simply saying even people who would want to might not because unfortunately it seems a large section of the internet is filling with absolute idiots as I've found many people who literally don't know how to run an effing installer.
all the apps and libraries in xp are unprotected, so it shouldnt be hard to disassemble the code and track the network protocol. I guess a loader and/or a standalone server would be the best way to do it.
After seeing this video (Today 1st August 2019), I picked up my old Acer laptop with Windows XP and tried to play these games, and I had a great time tbh I managed to play Backgammon, Dama and Hearts, but when I was playing a second time with Hearts (which was really fun and I was winning), the connection crashed saying the game received damaged data I tried to reconnect and the game said "Unable to connect to the game server" They fucking shut down the servers right in front of me while I was playing. Guess I cannot try Reversi Internet and Spades Internet. Sad I didn't played all these games years ago

I'm not that delusional to be using an unsupported 19 year old OS for watching RUclips or browsing the web. If I had the money I'd be drawing on a Wacom cintiq companion pro not a 15 year old tablet PC. But it's my child for now haha

I really dont understand why they kill stuff like this. I get it, its old, but it takes absolutely nothing to keep some type of basic server going to keep old stuff like this alive just for the sake of it. Literally some IT guy could grab an old Core 2 Duo PC out of his scrap bin and set it up to take over these old servers places.

I dunno if you did a video on the Microsoft Plus! games before but it could be cool to do it just for documentation sake that they existed as well, and they were pretty damn neat like Hyperbowl and Russian Square, fully 3D games that came with the XP pack that were not just pretty impressive (specially Hyperbowl) but also quite fun to play with.
My dad got his old laptop fixed in April and I played all those nostalgic games for a whole day. I opened Internet Backgammon (even though I never knew how to play it) and to my surprise I still got connected to someone. Made me remember back in 2009 when I was 6-7 when I first realized I'm actually playing with an actual person somewhere in the world. Amazing times.
Yup, and Windows XP’s activation servers are all up and running and are set to stay running indefinitely. What’s more update servers for Windows XP and even 2000 are all online. Which means we may be about to see servers remaining online for software that is 20 years old!
As with all games that connect online, they all eventually lose support by the developers. Thankfully they can’t stop us from playing the older offline games, which is why I’ll always have my NES and pre-XP machines offline.
Wonder how long they will keep the Windows XP activation servers running. Last time they shut down activation servers were for Microsoft Money several years ago. So they released a patched version that no longer requires activation and made it free to download. Wonder if that will be the case for XP. If so that would be awesome!!!

ComputerKiddo windows is used by over a billion of users. Even a few percentage of that users means supporting millions of multiplayers matches. Secondly, Microsoft must also keep these servers up to date and continuously monitor for and mitigate security venerabilities. This does cost more than a few pennies.

I am now downloading Windows XP POSReady 2009 to use on my PC hahaha I tried to use Linux on it, but figured that 32bits versions of Linux are being pretty much discontinued too. So I'll stick with Windows XP.
Whoever has Windows 7 can still play these games for a couple more days. For Windows 7 it shuts down in January 22. I've played these right now on January 7 2020. and they still work. To be honest, these games are meh, nothing special, but someone should still make some kind of fan/pirate server so that the games can live on forever. Hopefully. Theoretically it should be possible to change the server URL of where these games connect. Maybe it would require changing HOSTS file, or modifying the games in hex editor.
So that's why the Internet games don't work when I try them on Windows XP and it's the same with the Windows 7. But I did not know that Microsoft have shut down their servers until seeing this video.
Honestly, a few times I would log into my Toshiba laptop that I got off of Facebook marketplace that has Windows XP, and about each time, I would be amazed that anyone actually still play it and/or that it is still playable when I logged in to the computer.

Support is not completely dead. You can ALWAYS get up to date versions of Windows XP from TEAM OS forums, you just can't use Windows Update at all.

I once modified the game exe and changed the chat string / text with my own. So it allowed me to send my own custom text instead of pre built-in.
But could the other people read it? Didn't it send messages code instead of full string?
