Welcome to Meghan Grace DIY! I have been sewing since I was 8 years old and have done lots of great things in the sewing world from making figure skating costumes to teaching high school fashion to freelance costume design to college fashion professor. This video is a step by step tutorial on how to sew a scrub cap with a ponytail pocket and tie. This is a perfect scrub cap for those with long hair or a ponytail. Print the pattern out by clicking on the PDF links below. Before we get started I think it is important to note that there are many different styles and techniques in the sewing world, so take with you what works and leave behind what doesn’t! Also when it comes to making any kind of PPE, always consult the CDC and a medical professional.
Supplies for this tutorial:

Hi, I have tried 4 different scrub caps and this is by far my favorite, I even added a ribbon to the band. It’s easy to follow and the patten is great. Thank you
Thank you so much! That’s such a nice compliment!
Meghan Grace DIY I am now on my second hat since yesterday and it has taken me even less time for this one. I’m no expert at sewing. My daughter and I both work in the OR at our hospital. We both have long hair. I’m loving this hat pattern. I want to add a picture but I’m not sure how. When I figure it out I will drop one. Thank you again for this simple to make great hat. 🥰
I’d love to see a picture! If you can’t attach one here send one to my MeghanGraceDIY at gmail address!

What a lovely tutorial, so clear and wonderful for anyone new to sewing! Love this! Thank you 🙏
I watched several other tutorials before watching this one, and this is by far the easiest one to follow. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I recently started sewing my own caps and this has been the easiest "how to" video I've seen! Very easy to follow!
I’m so glad you like it!! Please share with anyone you think will need it :)
Meghan I enjoy watching your tutorials, I can watch them over and over again, you are a great teacher.
Awww thank you that’s much appreciated!!!
Thank you so much for this amazing pattern! I just made my first one, but it definitely won't be the last one!
Thanks a million for sharing this pattern , and your clear instructions! The measurements were perfect and it came together nicely. I also made your bouffant cap.
Thanks for having this pattern available. I was just told I needed to wear a hair net. I wanted something cuter and now I’m going to make this hat.
Thank you!!! Easiest pattern yet and I used my scrap material. Created under an hour.
Cute! I've just gotten back into sewing. Thanks for the tutorial, will try it out :)
This is a beautiful and easy pattern. Thanks for sharing! I’ll be sewing Christmas scrub caps this weekend
Awww that’s so sweet! Good luck on your scrubs!
I have to make some of these.I have many friends that worked in nursing. Thank for it information.
Excellent, just what our daughters need. Thank you.
Your welcome!!
This is the best tutorial ever. You make it so easy and fun!! Thank you so very much ❤
Thank you so much for such a great pattern! I had tried two other patterns--one too big, one too small. This one was just right!! Making several foe my daughter.
Great! I hope she stays safe at work!
Cute! Ty so much for the free pattern. I truly appreciate it!
Fantastic scrub cap and tutorial! I now have the Pokémon scrub cap of my dreams, and I'll be the coolest kid on my med-surg unit!!❤❤❤
Hi!! I have very long, thick, curly hair and wanted to give my opinion for others wondering. I just completed my first cap!! It turned out great!! I was worried the elastic wouldn't allow enough space for all my hair, so i added 1 inch in the ponytail holder. Turns out there was plenty of space. I definitely have to pull my hair back into a tight, low bun to make it work, but regardless, it works great!
I've made many scrub caps but this is the best and I love how esay it is. I'll be making caps for my colleagues as we work in healthcare. Thank you so much for sharing your patterns and this video. I love it!
Thank you for being on the front lines and taking care of us!
Thanks for your generosity sharing your pattern. I just cut my fabrics. About to start sewing. Am excited to see my finished project, from the pattern you shared. Very clear video demonstration.
Thank you! I’m glad you found it easy to follow!
Thanks for the pdfs, cutting is very very simple. Video is so good and so much in detail sewing the cap was very easy.
Thank you so much.
Im glad the PDFs were easy to print - I’ve had some issues before with them not opening but I don’t seem to be having the same issues on this video!
Thanks Meghan. Ive downloaded your pattern and can't wait to try it. I worked in the OR and been sewing caps for my colleagues since the quarantine started. But some of them have longer and need more room in the cap. I'm going to try it out.
I hope it works out well for you! Thank you for giving your sewing skills to your coworkers 🙂
Thanks for a “seamless “ demo👍🏾😊
You are welcome!
Thank you for the video. I have tried to find the right video to try to make a pony tail scrub cap as for my next step in making scrub caps. This is the one and it looks easy and fun. Keep up the awesome work.
Thank you! Let me know how it comes out!
I'm making these for the veterinarian clinic I work at. They love them! Super easy pattern with perfect results...especially for long haired people.
Awww I’m so glad to hear that!!! Enjoy :)
Im a little late at making these but my quilt store is cutting kits to donate to our local hospitals. your pattern was selected and it was fun watching and making them with you and in the end seeing you demo the fitting. Thanks for your video. Rich.
Oh my goodness what an honor!!
Fantastic! Worked great and loved the fit. Thanks so much.
Great! I’m glad it worked well for you!!
Thanks so much! This is am amazing tutorial. I want to make a cap like this for cleaning up around the house as my hair ways gets the way. I am off to make myself one of these.
Beautiful pattern. Just made one. I had to complicate things and put in a satin lining but it work out well. For my next i think i’ll put a drawstring in the back instead of the elastic to fit my bun better and make it long enough that its the only ties needed. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Turned out perfect, great pattern and tutorial.
In glad it came out well for you!
i love it, this is awesome, i work in the o.r and i make the regular scrub bouffants for my self and never made the pony tail scrub hat but you made this look really easy
I’m so glad I could help!!
This is a wonderful scrub hat to make!
I’m glad you found the tutorial useful!!
Great pattern thank you for sharing,
Thank you so much, you simplified several steps and made it very easy and attractive!
Im so glad you found it easy!

Very nice, great tutorial, thank you! I need to get sewing!
Yes yes! Get back to that sewing machine!!
thanks for your video, I have to try it.
Subbed. Best sewing tutorial on YT.
Merci beaucoup! Joli travail!
Love this!
Thanks Meghan..
When pinning, place the pins from the outer edge in, so it is easier to remove them when sewing. This is a nice tutorial, thanks for sharing.
Thank you - it’s just my habit. I tend see over pins too, but I know not everyone is ok with that so I do my best to not sew over pins either! Self taught habits die hard!
Thank you so much for the video - I ended up making two scrub caps back to back and I must say I have lots of hair, so I made the ponytail section a bit larger but it turned out great and I am so very happy : ) Thank you so much for making this!!
1st attempt of making scrub caps.
I think my printer shrank the pattern pieces but that was easy enough to enlarge. I did increase the ponytail pocket a bit more & decreased the elastic length to 5.5", so the pocket opening is tighter.
Am so happy with how it turned out.
Thank you for sharing your talent.
Your welcome! I am thinking the tighter elastic is the bet the better way to go since I’ve heard a few times that the tighter elastic works better - I appreciate you guys giving me red back because it makes me a better teacher!!
There may be an error in the band pattern. It should read 4” x 10 1/4”. Not 1.5” x 10 1/4”. In my humble opinion. Or i mis read the arrows?
Love it!!
Meghan, it's such a lovely & neat cap! Thanks a Lot for Sharing your Knowledge. You are a Great guide.I am your new subscriber.
Wish you a Happy New Year!
Of 2022! Please share more of your Tutorials.Bye & Tc..
Hola amiga, acabo de coser el gorro y me quedo muy lindo. Mil bendiciones desde colombia.
Thank you for sharing your pattern, its always easy to listen and watch the videos. I don't sell the scrub caps, I've been sewing for friends who work at a dental office (the office I worked at before) and my daughter needs me to sew this pattern since she has long hair plus works at two hospitals.
I'm glad they worked out well for you!
Meghan Grace DIY I can’t find where to download the pattern. Can you help me?
There are links in the description to the patterns
I also have a short video on my channel showing you how to find them since sometimes it’s hard to find the description section
Gracias por este excelente tutorial 👍 un abrazo fuerte en la distancia desde Venezuela 🤗😍
De nada!
Thanks very good. I'm Brazil
Glad to have you!
Meghan, thank you!!!
These worked perfect and your video is the best!
I watched it a few times and print, cut, sew and bam!
I have a daughter & future son n law in medical school, these will save some $ for sure!
I do have a question, I noticed that you cut with your fabric right side up? Easier or just your style?
I guess I’m just use to always having it the other way, but just wondering.
Thank you again, the video was simple, very easy to follow, great directions and advice!

Beautiful. Saludos desde Nicaragua
❤ Thank you
Excelente
Desde colombia, muchas gracias
When making the channel for the elastic on the ponytail holder, sew a straight stitch (1/2" in) where your fold line will be. This will give you a guide for ironing and make things much neater.
I know this is an old video but thank you! I made 5 for my daughter starting a new job.
Awww I’m really glad this video could help you ❤️
Excelente gracias 🥰
De nada!
Nice good
hey! quick tip for everyone without a printer but does have a laptop/chromebook
open the pattern in Kami or something and use your laptop as a light box to trace it! :)
Yes this is a great recommendation!!
I tried to get a print out of your pattern so I sew one using your RUclips instructions but i cant seem to download it
Is there a way to make the bun part tighter? like less fabric that is holding the hair so there isn't such a gap where the elastic is? LOVE the fit overall, so comfortable. Just looking for a tighter fit in the bun, for my hair personally.
Hi! Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. I’m wondering if there is a way for me to make this lined with satin?🤗
Yes you could! I would cut the crown and side pieces and the back ponytail portion out of satin as well. For the pony tail portion, just complete all the steps with the satin layer inside the cotton layer. For the cap, sew the cap together separately, then flip inside out and place the satin layer inside the cotton layer, so the seams inside end up between the cotton and satin layer. Then continue making the cap as normal. Hope this helps!
Meghan Grace DIY Thank you so much for responding!! I will try this week and post a pic! 🤗
Good
Me gusta como esplica aunque no se inglés la entiendo
Yay! First comment. Great video!
Thank you!! Please let me know if there is anything I can do better...I’m always looking to improve!
@@MeghanGraceDIY love the video but sometimes i need written directions do you have a link for the written directons of how to make this cap??? my computer is nowhere near my sewing machine lol
@@3sisters290 I wish I could do written directions too! It takes me so long to do a video while working as it is that if I added directions it would take even longer! I’m hoping to get faster at editing so one day I can have an accompanying website with easy access to patterns and written directions!
At what % do you print the pattern? I couldn't seem to find it😁
Hi! I know you said you wish someone with thicker hair would try the cap, and I know this video is old, 😂 but I'm making one of these for my cousin who's a surgical nurse and has dreads. I've been making her caps for a while now and wanted to try something different that works better for her hair. I'll report back soon, and thank you!!!
Oh that’s great! You’re so nice to make them for her, I hope he likes them!
Hello! I too am making this for someone with locs! How did it work out for your cousin??
Question: For the contrast band, the amount of material listed is "4 x 20". The actual pattern piece reads "Cut on fold (10 1/4in). I cut a 4x20 in piece of fabric, but the pattern piece is larger than this - does it matter? This is my first one but I have purchased fabric to make several for a friend's daughter that is in her surgical residency.
Hello! No matter what I try I can't get the pattern pieces to print the correct size. Can you please tell me what the width is supposed to be on A, B & C. Thanks!!
Hi, is there any way to make the ponytail "pouch" smaller? I have a ponytail, but it's small due to thin hair and that would be way too big
Hola me gustó por qué das los moldes así que por eso te doy un megusta y lo voy hacer aunque no entiendo tu idioma pero viéndolo como lo haces lo abre bendiciones 🙏
Enjoyed the tutorial. Easy to follow. How do I get the free pattern?
The pattern is linked in the description, but you can also email me for a copy!
Hi, Love this pattern. Do you have the directions in a written format? Love the video but I think a written copy to take the sewing machine with me would be very helpful? Is it here somewhere - did I miss it?
The transcript for this video might work well for written instructions.
When I printed from the PDF file, there were not lines to actually cut. I have to guess how wide, length of pattern piece etc. Can you help me Please??
what size head do this fit? She has a big head and a lot of thick hair.
How i can get the free patern please
hey i sent you an email for the pattern but didn't get any response do you still send them ? eager to test it out !
how to i get this pattern please
HELP!! I can't find the pattern. I just keep caught in a loop back again and again to the video. Where can I find it?
I am not able to access the links. Can you please post them here? Thanks.
Just printed the pattern thanks so much for that. When printed it says pattern B is 5” but it’s actually 4.75” will that be a problem or should I make it fit 5”? Same with other pieces they have printed shorter. Should I make to printed pattern or make it to the sizes on the pattern?
Huh that’s very strange. Did you print it as a pdf or jpeg?
Meghan Grace DIY pdf
Hmmmm that’s odd...I have class in a a bit but after that I’ll check it out!
do you have a pattern for a child size
The actual cap part turned out super small and I couldnt get it over my head. Any suggestions? I double checked and the pattern pieces are correct size
Hmmmm do you have a crown that measures bigger than 23? It should fit most adults but obviously there are outliers. My best suggestion would be the print the pattern on 110% to make it a bit bigger and go from there!
I could use some tips for the interfacing....is it for the contrast band?
Yes for the contrast band, I really like pellon woven fusible interfacing
@@MeghanGraceDIY okay good to know!! I've never used interfacing before. Lots of options!
Good interfacing can make or break your project! The woven fusible is a bit more expensive but since you don’t need that much for this project it’s worth it - i usually get the woven fusible stuff by the 20 yard bolt when it’s 50% off so I always have it on hand!
Thank you for getting right to the meat and potatoes lol! So quick and easy.
Hi there, Are there written instructions anywhere? I have printed the pattern pieces but was just hoping for actual written instructions? Thanks!
Unfortunately I don’t attach written instructions yet, I am hoping to start doing written instructions when I have more time this summer!
Me gustaría este tutorial en español 🤩
Mi novio sabe espanol.. lo puede pedir de traducir una do los videos!
Can I use a 21”X18” piece of fabric for this?
No that will be too small :(
How long does it take to make one from beginning to end?
I think that depends on how fast the sewer is, but I think it can be accomplished in an hour!
Thank you, I love this But I cannot find the pattern? Please tell me what link to go on. I just keep getting a bunch of pictures of different caps.
Check in the description, there is a link to a Google doc - if you can’t find it shoot me an email!
I found it at the bottom of the page, thanks again, Megan!
Your welcome! It’s tricky because the RUclips platform looks different depending on your device!
I can't seem to find where to download the pattern. Please help!
There is a link in the description section or you can email me for it!
I was able to find the printable pattern pieces. Is there an actual pattern to print? My mom has agreed to make a cap for me, so I'd like to send her a printable pattern. Thanks so much for any help!!!
Im not quite sure what you mean - the pattern pieces linked in the description are the pattern pieces? They are printable on normal 8 1/2 by 11 pieces of paper
@@MeghanGraceDIY I already found the pattern pieces. I was looking for the instructions to print out to take to my mom. For example, when you go to the fabric store and want to make a dress, you purchase a "pattern" that includes the instructions on how to make it and the pattern pieces to use to cut out your fabric.
How do you make the straps? Do you have a video for that?
Are you referring to the straps that tie around the ponytail? I have a video named “how to make rolled ties” and that will show you how to make them! I believe it’s linked in the description box under the video.
You can use 3/8 inch grosgrain ribbon to save time. Take a flame and carefully heat the ends (takes a second, do not burn them) and the will be sealed as not to fray.
How long are the ties?
12 inches each, so I made a 24 inch long piece and cut it in half
Do you have a pattern similar to this but with ribbon instead of elastic? I’m wanting to make this for a nurse and she told me she prefers ribbon 🤔
Would you just make the casing a little bigger and run a ribbon in instead?
Yup you can just thread the ribbon through the casing and tie around the pony tail
