      It shows how niche the community still is sadly. Almost every single large review site/tech youtuber exclusively focuses on 2D 1080p to 4k comparisons. Completely ignoring VR and the fact that just because one card has better 4K performance, that it doesn’t mean that it’s VR performance is also better than the card it’s being compared to.

    Obviously this is a lot harder to benchmark due to the nature of the game itself, but, do you think you could start including VRChat into these tests? After all, since the entire point of VRChat is that everyone is using their own avatar with its own textures, materials, shaders, etc. it's a very different conversation when talking about VRAM compared to a more "directed" VR game with a specific scope.

    Virtual Desktop seems to be prone to weird problems. I've got a really bizarre one going on now. When I'm in VR mode in any graphic setting higher than potato I get a weird kind of graphcs smearing that looks kind of like there's an image burned into the lens (there isn't). Another thing that's odd is I can set the graphics to ultra and the bandwidth to 150 and 120 hz and the ASW never kicks in no matter what game I'm playing. This is on a 3080 which shouldn't definitely need ASW at those settings for games like Saints & Sinners. Anyway, I've tried everything short of re-installing my OS on the computer, including going back to my earliest restore points, installing an older version of Virtual Desktop[, rebooting, reinstalling, every combination of settings, etc. Tried discord but they didn't really have any brilliant ideas either, apparently either I'm the only one this has happened to or it's extremely rare. Anyway I've thrown up my hands at this point. Link and Air Link work fine, and while I prefer Virtual Desktop, it's not worth nuking my OS since I have another option.
    Anyway, good luck, hope you fair better fixing your VD problem than I did with mine.

    Thank you for this review, I was waiting it for quite a long time! Now I am definetely buying it. Even if rumored 4070/4080 Super series will be released in 2024, I bet it won't cost around 500$ even close, so to get such a nice performance (even in something as demanding as VR) for 500$ is a steal, imo.

    • @nerd20fromdiscord
      @nerd20fromdiscord 10 месяцев назад

      4070 super should be 600$ and will smash the 7800xt in every way, i would urge you to reconsider (the 4070 super will dominate the midrange since it will basically perform really close to a 4070ti for 200$ less)

    • @DEADSnAkeBY

      @@nerd20fromdiscord sorry dude, but I don't believe in Nvidia anymore after whole 4000 series *&^$show ("4080" 12GB and 80-series card for 1200$, etc.). Also, for example, I was waiting for a year for a 3070 refresh with 16GB - and it never arrived. So all those rumors about Super series can potentially lead to the same situation (noone knows what and when will happen). Plus I just can't believe that Huang will suddenly sell a newer and better card for less money. I bet it's goal is to change the older lineup that will be sold at a discount to clear the shelfs after this whole Super-series announcement. But it still won't be a good deal (I mean the original cards at a discount) - even if 4080 will become 1000$ it's still, imo, too much for it and 4070/4070 TI still will have only 12GB, so even at a discount it is a no-go for me personally. So I made my choice - 7800 XT it is!

    • @Maraksot78

      Red Matter 2 does look really good on Quest 3 native. While I haven't spent a bunch of time using my Quest 3 yet I did see some janky-ness with some of the shadows on the native Quest 3 version that are flawless on PCVR. So it's still worth it to play it on PCVR IMO, but there's not doubt Red Matter 2 looks better than any other stand alone game I've ever played. Resolution and texture wise it's right up there with PCVR but there is still more work to be done with dynamic lighting and shadows.

    Be interested in the comparison with the 4070 (or Ti), and DLSS vs FSR for VR titles that support it such as No Man's Sky. I'm looking to upgrade from a 6600 XT, and locally the cheapest 7800 XT and 4070 cards trade places depending on the current specials (currently @$35AUD cheaper for the Sapphire 7800XT vs the PNY RTX 4070). I have had a lot of issues with terrible jaggies and shimmering edges in link/airlink with the 6600 XT (also running a 5800X3D), regardless of settings/driver version. Fewer such issues in VD though.

      Personally done some experimenting and upscaling does not work well with the quest 2, you save on performance but it looks worse and felt less depth in the enviroments, I had to turn upscaling to high quality and still did not look a nice as in native resolution, so I rather have native res for now. perhaps its a problem of the displays, since they are so small pixel density its already quite compromised

    • @Joric78
      @Joric78 9 месяцев назад

      @@SillyMonkeysLikeApples What resolution are you running from the Oculus/Steam settings? Due to encoding etc, it usually looks pretty bad unless you have the rendering resolution set above the native resolution of the panels by a decent amount. With the 6600 XT the Oculus settings for 1.0X are only at 3264 x 1648, which is significantly UNDER the native 3664 x 1920. Interestingly there's quality gains to be had from going well over the native resolution, without using FSR/DLSS etc, so I'm not sure where the best visuals for the performance would lie. I've only really fooled around with using FSR in No Man's Sky, and the visual downgrade is very obvious.

    • @SillyMonkeysLikeApples
      @SillyMonkeysLikeApples 9 месяцев назад

      @@Joric78 maybe Im missing something? usually quest link stays at recommended (which its over native display resolution 4.100 by 1.900 or something like that) (recommneded res depends on your hardware and its automatic from quest software).
      But the upscaling its something to be used to render on lower res to later upscale on the normal resolution (ex, 1080p monitor renders at 720p and upscales back to 1080). that is what I tried and looks worse, I did not see any point of upscaling over since it consumes gpu power as just rendering the game on native, plus its not looking as nice as in native res.
      What worked for me always its play on native and increase resolution but without upscaling, it consumes some extra gpu power but makes it sharp and there is no weird things going on

    • @Joric78
      @Joric78 9 месяцев назад

      @@SillyMonkeysLikeApples I think the recommended render resolution is based on your system (and largely GPU) performance. The recommended resolution on my PC with a 5800X3D and 6600 XT is 3264 x 1648. That's well below native.
      People are reporting that there's very noticeable quality improvements all the way up to the 5408 x 2736 max (which might be a result of the barrel distortion correction and ensuring that every pixel is still rendered 1:1 at a minimum).
      My point was that I'm not sure where the improvement from increasing the native rendering resolution crosses over with the performance benefits of upscaling in terms of the ideal compromise in image quality. In other words, are you better off running a higher resolution upscaled or just a lower render resolution?

    • @SillyMonkeysLikeApples
      @SillyMonkeysLikeApples 9 месяцев назад

      @@Joric78 in my personal experience, run the native resolution which is 1:1 (gains after that come at a big gpu performance cost and its not very noticeably).
      What I do to get a bit more definition its depending on the game but add a 30% resolution on in game setting, and use some Anti Alaising thing to blend the pixels and make it look smoother.
      Somehow just adding that 30% on the quest link software makes things harder to carry on my gpu, because you are rendering the entire desktop environment plus the game, I assume.
      Some pcvr games are very demanding but others like alyx and assetto corsa can run amazing in my old 1660s, jumping to a 3070 did not improve the visuals or the fps for me, but having performance headroom, no casual frame drops and run on the fans on low rpms its something I enjoy pretty much, as soon as i push I meet the limits quite quickly, dont see much visual improvement and frame drops are annoying for me

      @Maraksot78  2 месяца назад +1

      Honestly I can't diagnose why you're having a hard time hitting 90fps without being there to see what all you've got going on. Looking at flat game benchmarks on RUclips the 5800X3D does provide a slightly higher frame rate than the 12600k when using the same GPU, so that may have a little to do with it. Also I don't know what RAM speed/timings you're running and that can effect your frame rate too. For example, I was running 3600MHz CL16 DDR4 in this video and I've seen Hardware Unboxed run DDR4 3200MHz CL14 RAM that performs better than DDR4 4000MHz and faster because of the tighter timings, so that's another thing that can make a small difference depending on the game. And then, of course, depending on what all applications you have installed on your PC and processes you have running in the background, that can impact game performance as well. My test system has only the stuff I need to do these benchmark videos installed on it, because I'm trying to find the maximum performance a GPU is capable of. And then of course depending on the render resolution you're using and settings you're using, that too is going to impact performance. So yah, it may not be one thing, it may be a combination of several different things that's effecting your performance.

    • @Maraksot78

      When it comes to ease of use, Nvidia is still superior IMO. It works perfectly pretty much right out of the box where Radeon GPU's need some tweaking in the Oculus Debug Tool to get the same experience. Personally I don't think the encode/decode issues (which is where the majority of the problems lie) with AMD is entirely AMD's fault. I feel Meta is just as much to blame, if not more so, because they seem to be coding their software to work perfectly with Nvidia GPU's and putting in far less effort with AMD GPU's, but that's just my opinion based on my observations.

      RUclips is just a hobby of mine, I don't make videos full time, so depending on the video it sometimes takes me awhile to get one done. Anyway, I did all my testing using the Adrenalin 23.9.3 driver. The current driver is 23.11.1 just fyi. And I should say, when I tested the 7800XT with AirLink in mid October it worked great which is what I reported in my video, however... I fired it up yesterday to do a little gaming with the 7800XT using AirLink and it looked terrible. I don't know what happened between the time I first tested it and now but AirLink is not working good currently out of the box. I had to set the encode width in the Oculus Debug Tool to 3680, Link Sharpening to Normal and the Dynamic Bitrate Max to 150 and the Dynamic Bitrate Offset to 50 to get things to look good. While it does make things look nice, performance isn't butter smooth all the time. It's good most of the time but there's also a fair amount of hitching or stuttering that goes on. It's always short lived and only happens every so often so games are fully playable in my opinion, but of course it's best if there's none of that kind of stuff going on. When using a Link cable everything is great once I set the encode width to 3680 and Link Sharpening to Normal like I said in the video, but for whatever reason AirLink has decided to be fussy again. I'm planning for my next video to be about this very issue, but just my luck by the time the video is done AMD or Meta or whoever is responsible will update their software and fix it making my video obsolete. 😂

      This is when using AirLink I assume? I've only had that happen when using AirLink but there is a way to fix it. First you need to open task manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del on you keyboard. In the processes tab scroll down to the Oculus processes there will be 3 or 4 of them. Right click on each one and then click 'end task'. Once they're all closed open Windows Explorer and go to C://Users/"your username"/AppData/Roaming/Oculus/sessions/"folder with a big string of numbers" you'll find three files named data.sqlite, data.sqlite-shm and data.sqlite-wal. Delete these 3 files. Now when you start up AirLink that right eye squeeze, as I call it, should be gone. When it comes back (yes I said when not if) do this process again to fix it.
