Great review. There has been some criticism about some of Redcat's design choices, but your review reminds us that the "scale" side of the hobby is just as important as the "crawler" side, and some of the technical drawbacks appear to be due to scale-based design decisions. Overall, it seems like Redcat has done a pretty good job of catering to both crowds.
Hi sbg I just wanted to say that I love your videos and they have helped me figure out parts for my scx10 2 and trx4 sport. Thanks for the help!!! Have a great day!!!
Well done, thank you for the review and thoughts. I'd be interested in a follow-up here sometime soon to see where you're at with it and what you think after having it for a while. That's the first thing I did to min is took the body off an marked the fender flare from inside and ground it down. & did what hemistorm did to his I took the door handles from the 10.2 Cherokee body & put the front bumper closer to the body. & put the battery in the back. Used a axail battery plate.

I believe the servo and the shocks on that are the same as the ones on the gen 7. I’ve had my gen 7 for a little over a year and the servo just died about a month ago. Pretty good life for a rtr servo considering what i did with the truck lol. Also my shocks still don’t leak surprisingly! I pulled my axial bomber out of the box and 3 of the shocks were leaking...Attention to detail gets you places!

Scale Builder's Guild If it’s anything like the build quality of the gen 7 pro, I think it’ll be a great truck. Only thing i ever broke on it after just over a year of ownership was a rear driveshaft yolk, and the servo (which as stated above lasted a longgg time). Probably some of the best tires on a rtr too. It’s my go to play truck lol
Great video. I got one and don't know how far to put in some performance parts. But after running on some trails it is a great rig. Seems main theme is durability of the plastic gears, small bearings and those single point shock mounts. But I love it and is fun, scale potential.

Great review man.. I am still not sold on this rig.. Redcat did not start out in this hobby to create great rigs, it was to make money.. NOW they realize that they have a customer base and they are trying to capture that.. I personally think they got a long way to go to catch up to the Axial's or Rc4wd's of the hobby. To name a couple. And I think it shows in a lot of the construction.. Sorry to be a doubting Thomas... But I have been down the road with these guys and it was a BAD experience.. All that being said.. I do like the look of the body. Nice to see something different...
Considering this is their first officially designed in USA vehicle, I'd still say they did a pretty decent job. It's as good in terms of construction as any RC4WD, that's for sure.
I guess it comes down to whether or not you want portal axles. If I could suggest, save a bit more money and get the Cherokee kit, and add your own electronics. It’s overall a much better kit, you’ll have the pleasure of putting it together yourself, and you’ll learn so much more about the hobby that way!
For now i'll stick to my trx-4. Maybe in the future when i get bored of it and in the need of something new, simple and unexpensive to maintain i will get the meow... Eerrr i mean, the Redcat. Nice vid sir, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
As I save $$ for my next R/C truck this Redcat Gen8 is high on my list, along with the Axial SCX10 II. One of my main complaints with the Gen8 is those black windows. The front grill is a very nice touch being open with a radiator looking material behind it. Seems they could have tossed in wipers and door handles though. --- In mentioning some vehicles that use portal axles I think you missed probably the two most well known ones; American General Humvee and Hummer H1. In my opinion portal axles are cool, but not really "scale", it's highly unlikely you'll ever see them on a real IH Scout II since they came from the factory with Dana axles.
Been avoiding this rig for as long as possible. I even thought about buying one of those RC4WD 1/18 Glendales as an evasive measure but I think this video just did me in damnit. Excellent review 👍 and I’ll probably still buy the Glendale lol. Is RC therapy a real thing? Because it’s apparent I’m not the only one that needs help. 🙀ffft ffft!!
Just found your channel and I gotta say good stuff. One thing I might say is turn the music down when you are talking, its hard to understand you over the music.
I do believe you mean "Lynx" sir!!! 😅 😂 🤣 Great review! I usually stay away from anything Redcat, but I think I'll try this one. I dose have very good potential. Very interested in the follow up review.
It's a game changer and hopefully Redcat will roll with the aftermarket and not blow it. Here's hoping Axial is taking note and release something along these lines, otherwise it's a 2 horse race and competition is always better and who doesn't want more choices? :)
@@scalebuildersguild Pretty good deal in that case. Definitely top of my list. The gen7 pro comes with a battery, but is the same price at my hobby shop. I've heard the gen7 is a better trail truck due to durability and top speed, but the Gen8 is better for dedicated rock crawling. I'm still undecided.
Hey Matt, I'm going to paint my pro-line '46 power wagon body the Spaz Stix color changing paint and back it with black. I want to paint the fenders black as well. All the videos I've watched said to paint dark colors first. The color changing paint will be backed with the Ultimate Black Backer by Spaz Stix, recommended for backing the color changing paint. Should I mask the fenders, paint the truck the color changing paint, peel off the painter's tape, then paint everything black OR should I mask most of the truck, paint the fenders black, take off the tape, paint the truck the color changing paint, then back the color changing paint by the black? Like I said, no matter what, the fenders will be black. Thanks and I love the gen8.
@@ryanp.8807 I've Painted 7 Bodies with Spaz Stix Color Changing Paint.... I'd be more than happy to help you in any way I can! 😉 It's easier to do than some make it out to be.... but Prep is EVERYTHING, including some unorthodox methods!!! The Paint is *slightly* more brittle than other Lexan Paints, but again, with the right Prep, will be as good as any other flexible Paint. 😎 Carmine
@@ryanp.8807 No Ryan, you don't NEED to.... What I do is, when washing the Body, I use a Scotch Brite Pad. I scuff the INSIDE of the Body. It gives the Paint more "tooth", allowing the Paint to actually grip the Lexan!! 👍👍😉 Since the Body itself is the "Clearcoat" of the Paint Job, scuffing the Interior is exactly like sanding the Color Coat before spraying the Clearcoat when Painting on the OUTSIDE. This should be obvious but, *DON'T scuff the Windows!!!* 😱 However, using this method, even though you're scratching the inside before Painting, it won't look ANY different on the outside, when you peel off the Film!! Carmine 💥 ⛽
Do you have plans to dig deeper into it? I know the Everest 10 had dry axle housings and transmission . . Wondering if there is any grease in them and other hidden cost savings that might have been done
I loved all cat jokes and this truck is going to make all the other rc companies take a good look at there pricing when they see how much this truck flys off the shelves. Like you pointed out at this price point you are getting a lot for your money!
Question I want to add the Yeah Racing Desert Lizard shocks to gime my Gen 8 some more scale look. I measured the stock shocks and they are 95mm. Yeah Racing offers the shocks in 90mm and 100mm, which would be better for my Gen 8? I have 30+ years in RC, but I am totally new to Crawling, I was thinking because the weight of the truck will put preload on the shocks the 100mm would be better so I can keep more travel but I really dont know which way to go
Matt, I'm glad you got a look at this. I've never been a big Redcat fan..... But I've been anticipated the Gen 8 for Months. Except for one BIG Faux Pas (the PAINTED OVER WINDOWS!!!!), this is up to the task of really shaking things up!! 😎👏👏👏👏 I hope I didn't offend you, by sort of sticking up for you, when the junior bashers started disrespecting you in that other Video. I seem to offend people a lot easier, since my decline.... I'm actually nervous about posting my SCX10 II RAW Builder's Kit with a Comanche Body on SBG! I'm literally afraid I'll offend someone, without trying, because I've been under unbelievable Stress... Anyway, maybe I'll be able to get a Gen 8, maybe still can't afford it. Either way, I'll be excited to see what you can do with this!! 👍👍 Chris (HemiStorm), has figured out how to get the paint off of the windows! I can't wait to find that video next. Let the fun begin, my friend!!! Carmine 💥 ⛽

I really like this rig. I'm slightly turned off by the axles though. I tend to build ultra scale (so much so that they no longer perform at basic crawling). I'm Dustinf11 on the forum. I will still be buying this and possibly build a scale rig that can actually climb over things.
Hi Dustin! Yeah, portals are a trend that doesn't necessarily need to be a thing in ultra-scale trucks. But they do have their place, and provided your CG is good, I think there's room for them.
Im looming to get my first trail truck but i am having a hard time on all the reviews ie the bad stuff. I wanted the gen 8. tell i found out about the small bearings and weeker portal axil setup. But i dont know. Im coming from old school nitro. Fast made fun. But now its slow. I would like to know what to get to start off with? I relise im going to have to do a steering servo. Im hard on my stuff by the way.
with it being pretty much the same price as the deadbolt and honcho do you think people are better off staying with axial with all the aftermarket parts and what everyone knows works great? or should this be a serious consideration

That’s lovely lookin truck will they b bringin a kit version out that would b rearly good if they do 👍👍
They've got a raw, electronics-free version called the PACK, for $169.
Looks like a great truck
Lots of potential!
Will there be a kitty version? I mean kit version, sorry! It looks really good.
Haahahaha, I hope so!
Bummer, I prefer kits. Thanks for the info
Awesome video! I was wondering what would be a better choice, this Redcat or the Axial scx10 Cherokee RTR?
I guess it comes down to whether or not you want portal axles. If I could suggest, save a bit more money and get the Cherokee kit, and add your own electronics. It’s overall a much better kit, you’ll have the pleasure of putting it together yourself, and you’ll learn so much more about the hobby that way!
That was a great Caturday review, I think I need to order one right meow!
Love it. Great!
For now i'll stick to my trx-4. Maybe in the future when i get bored of it and in the need of something new, simple and unexpensive to maintain i will get the meow... Eerrr i mean, the Redcat. Nice vid sir, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I think you meant, "For Meow..." Hahaha. Thanks for watching!
I had a scx10ii the CRC the most expensive one and I sold it, too much plastic and not that great imo my trx4 sport destroyed the scx10ii.
Ah right, the Hummer. Totally forgot about that one, thanks! Yeah, I'm hoping portals aren't a trend.
RC Therapy should be a thing. I NEED IT!
If he is doing cat jokes, I am going to close this video right meow.
Hahahaha
What's wrong with a cat joke? Or any joke for that matter?
12:10 Steering and suspension lynx.
Just found your channel and I gotta say good stuff. One thing I might say is turn the music down when you are talking, its hard to understand you over the music.
I just wish they would have paid as much catnip attention to the Pan Hard Setup, as they did the Bubble Wrap. Can you hear Meow?
Good review Matt. Cant wait for a crawl off with the Vanquish VS4-10 to compare 😹
BAHAHAHAA, yeah... ;)
Such a awesome truck!
It's got a lot of potential!
I actually run a 6200 mAh 100c battery and it fits beautifully
I do believe you mean "Lynx" sir!!! 😅 😂 🤣 Great review! I usually stay away from anything Redcat, but I think I'll try this one. I dose have very good potential. Very interested in the follow up review.
Hahahaha, good one!
Never had a Redcat. Might have to get one now.
I was in the same boat!
It's a game changer and hopefully Redcat will roll with the aftermarket and not blow it. Here's hoping Axial is taking note and release something along these lines, otherwise it's a 2 horse race and competition is always better and who doesn't want more choices? :)
Competition breeds innovation.
$299 is USD right? I'm also in Canada and it seems to retail for $400 minimum so far.
I always quote prices in USD.
Looks awesome, apart from the awful blacked out windows. Nice review 👍
It's quite good, and those windows are definitely getting fixed!
Gosh, I don't have any experience with Spaz Stix. You might want to reach out to them and see what they say. Good luck!
@@scalebuildersguild thanks matt have a good day
@@ryanp.8807 I've Painted 7 Bodies with Spaz Stix Color Changing Paint.... I'd be more than happy to help you in any way I can! 😉
It's easier to do than some make it out to be.... but Prep is EVERYTHING, including some unorthodox methods!!! The Paint is *slightly* more brittle than other Lexan Paints, but again, with the right Prep, will be as good as any other flexible Paint. 😎
Carmine
@@CarminesRCTipsandTricks thanks man and do i need to use the pre prep that spaz stix makes?
Ryan
@@ryanp.8807 No Ryan, you don't NEED to....
What I do is, when washing the Body, I use a Scotch Brite Pad. I scuff the INSIDE of the Body. It gives the Paint more "tooth", allowing the Paint to actually grip the Lexan!! 👍👍😉
Since the Body itself is the "Clearcoat" of the Paint Job, scuffing the Interior is exactly like sanding the Color Coat before spraying the Clearcoat when Painting on the OUTSIDE.
This should be obvious but, *DON'T scuff the Windows!!!* 😱
However, using this method, even though you're scratching the inside before Painting, it won't look ANY different on the outside, when you peel off the Film!!
Carmine 💥 ⛽
where did you buy this in canada great hobbies dont have them yet
RedCat was kind enough to send me a pre-release media kit.
Thanks for the comment Troi, yes, it's very well priced and if there's a good aftermarket support network, I think it'll be a hit!
What battery do you recommend
Any 3S 5000 LiPo 25C or higher pack should be fine.
@@scalebuildersguild thanks
you have the detailed videos ever nice scout btw
Thanks very much!
Question
I want to add the Yeah Racing Desert Lizard shocks to gime my Gen 8 some more scale look. I measured the stock shocks and they are 95mm. Yeah Racing offers the shocks in 90mm and 100mm, which would be better for my Gen 8? I have 30+ years in RC, but I am totally new to Crawling, I was thinking because the weight of the truck will put preload on the shocks the 100mm would be better so I can keep more travel but I really dont know which way to go
Please don't buy those shocks. They're not good. Stick with Incision, Pro-Line, or another top tier vendor.
@@scalebuildersguild thanks I will take a look at those
Can you get a wrench on the lower shock mount bolt? Looks impossible without taking the axle out.
Pillow balls. They pop off under enough torque.
My friend: "What rhymes with orange?"
Me: "No it doesn't"
Jokes aside I'm excited for a Trekker update :D
Tony θ took me a second to get that one. Lol
That's a good one! Yes, I have to do a Trekker update. I'm really behind on that build.
If Matt takes long enough I’ll have my 11.4 build done before he gets his started. Keeping in mind that the kit is now back ordered till March. Lol
redcats metal parts are pretty strong i know this they are a good brand and no one gives them a chance they are built better then axial
We'll see how it holds up in the long term!
I hope I didn't offend you, by sort of sticking up for you, when the junior bashers started disrespecting you in that other Video.
Chris (HemiStorm), has figured out how to get the paint off of the windows! I can't wait to find that video next. Let the fun begin, my friend!!!
Carmine 💥 ⛽
Thanks Carmine, I have big plans for this truck. Not sure what you're talking about on the bashing, but all good. No need to defend me, I'm a big boy.
Well, of course you're a big boy!! 😉 I just can't stand seeing anyone who I respect, disrespected...
I DO look forward to seeing what you do with this!!
great review, happy new year...
Thanks!
Dude, make a unimog body for it and it would be scale!
@@austingupton8829 That's a really good idea.
Nice review! I must say... Some of the other reviews left me in a CATatonic state 😴😏
Hahaaha!
That review was Grrrrrrrreat! Just missed the cat (un)boxing, did you throw out all the litter? 😊 Anxiously waiting for mine to show up.
No litter included. ;)
Great review! Purrfect! 👍
Thanks!
@@jjm2948 I'm surprised cause the gen 7 definitely don't hold up with the rest of what's out there
Gen7 is not this truck at all. Completely new design and shares no DNA. I'd give this a go. Aftermarket support will come (I think).
