The Axe was one of the best RTR's to ever hit the Market with an electronics package you will never see in an RTR again, it forever raised the bar for RTR's. The Gen9 is a good looking truck but the Weird scale reminds me of the Axial 1/8 Bronco Body scaling oddities.
I still own an original redcat gen8 axe edition, been thinking of selling it multiple times because I've had my fun with it but yes, we will probably never see an rtr crawler with those good of electronics again. And that's why I still have it, although it could use a rebuild.
@@HumphreyRCAdventure I have upgraded my ESC and Motor to the AXE FOC R2 2800kv, really nice because the R2 has a crawling mode and a trailing mode switchable by Bluetooth on the trail. Other than aluminum link connectors at the axles I haven't done any other serious mods to it. My most Scaled out rig for sure lots of extras and a scale winch on the Bull bar Bumper, a servo protector and some metal skids and that's about it. Moved the R1 AXE FOC to my Capra and it's a little BEAST 😈
Seems like Redcat is making steady forward progress. Still not at a level where I would feel comfortable recommending one, but they are definitely on the right track.
Great review! I have to preface this comment by saying I love red cat, that said this should not have broke like it did. Also when manufacturers are making something they need to take into account that it could be driven anywhere from Antarctica to Death Valley and design their parts accordingly, you shouldn't have to think about the outside temperature in order to drive your outside RC truck.
Looks great, would like to see someone like Proline offer a hardtop for it. Seen other videos of parts breaking in freezing temperatures, not just this brand. Somebody's going to offer metal knuckles for those in the Arctic Circle.
The body's scale is the only thing keeping me getting one. Will probably track down the 2-speed and different portal gears when they come to market; and shove them in my gen8. Which has been amazing, got it as a V1 years ago, completely upgraded to V2, replaced body from just pure use. It's my favorite truck in the fleet that just works. First metal part on mine was the steering hubs, the plastic they use hates the cold; metal parts are a must with the weight; more so with that 2-speed it'd seem.
The snowman figure is great👍😆 In addition i must say your videos are great to watch the music, camera shots and driving, very amusing to watch, i follow you and Josh and i don't even own a crawler or trail truck😁
Hi!, it's a lot that I follow you but never commented. This time I have to say BRAVO, very nice, complete and interesting presentation. Thank you. I love Redcat. Gen 8 was my first crawler and I made a lot of videos having fun and never problems. Ciao Nanni
Perfect review as always. I think you showed exactly what to expect when you run a RTR Redcat over crawling speed. Be sure to keep plenty of link ends, or go aftermarket links entirely. The portals may help, but I imagine the all plastic trans gears will love lugging around a 8-9lb truck. Redcat has decent designs. They just need to use a better material for some of their components. I would much rather spend a little more for a RTR that I don`t break on the first bat. Perhaps I have some Redcat PTSD from an intoxicated impulse Wendigo purchase.🥳to🤯 Now that I have Vanquish money wrapped up in the truck it`s a decent rig. I understand they are released at a decent price point, but I don`t think it would add much cost to use more durable materials in a few key areas.
BINGO!! Could not have said it better myself!! I had one back in the day. WAY back and 20:40 is why I'll never have another one. Always broken. and the price of the new one? Yikes. I heard the wendigo had issues. It seemed no one would admit it. But there were lots of upgrade videos on it. lol
snowman driver hanging out after the crash was so perfect hahaha. Oddly reminded me of the film nightcrawler, where he documents crashes and crimes right after, in a more comical fun manner lol
The more I enjoy crawlers and trail trucks, the more I realize we're aligned on what we don't want. More moving parts = more failure. I'm fine with single speed.
I took a chance on Redcat and bought a Marksman T8. Mainly because it has an unlicensed Jeepster Commando body. It’s 1/8 very fun trail rig. Big thought but fun. I have been eyeing the Gen 8. The Redcat put a bunch of stuff on sale. I ordered a Gen 9. I’m more of a fan of the Gen 8 body. But reading all the improvements on the 9. Again as stated I ordered one.
Team Corally I bought a MoxxooSP it is brushed not real fast . But it is pretty tough I hit a few trees at low speed and found no damage to plastic parts. I am impressed with it $189.99 cost. H.R.P. sells them.
My first crawler was a gen7 that is now portal axles and upgraded with everything from motor and esc and everything else In between. I probably should have just bought a vanquish for the money spent but I learned a lot in the process. It’ll go anywhere I point the tires though. They’re a good place to start for noobs like I was for a decent price point. And they keep making them better. Great review!
I still have my Gen 8 V1. Bought it when it first came out. Got a HW ESC, brass front and back, brass front diff cover, flat skid plate, a water proof servo, ProLine Body, heavy duty front axles, magnets for the body and a Fly Sky GT5 transmitter. I think thats it. I too put a shit ton of cash into it and honestly don't want to get another truck and start all over. Now I need to just make time to go to a GTG.
The funny thing is the body looks just like the real one so they hit the mark. Only problem that model has never been a looker. But I believe it can be made to look mean & im sure it’s all business as far as it’s ability to crawl.
I’d like to see you do your own artistic craftsmanship on the body and wheels. If redcat doesn’t automatically send you a new axle (I’m sure they will) these axles are quite cheap on Amazon. Heck I’ll even send you a set.
Wow they nailed it! I've got a whole row of the 1:1 rigs in the junkyard, broken just like that 1. (And before anyone asks NO they are not for sale)Lol. It's a bit off scale for sure but a decent looking option if your a fan. Problem is, it's not available yet to the general public (Now) . The Gen 8 is down too $250 at my LHS. Thanks for sharing awesome filming and perfect music choice again thanks for sharing.
That was the first failure part for me on the gen7. Similar situation, high speed, and was driving in about 35 to 40f temps. Granted, I was on a 3s 3200kv brushless setup. Replaced the knuckles and hub carrier with aluminum ones.
I know another people down redcat and it was 2nd truck I bought getting back into rc and now have every manufacturer crawler for price its worth it my son now has it and only thing I replaced within hour have it was portal gear but it's took a beating from my son amazingly still going even know it ain't top brand axel.traxxes.or other's it is upgradeable and has great body I say don't always think it's just a redcat they have been doing better a time goes u just have to be realistic about what u want to use it for and for price I still would buy even after having over 15 trucks it's good looker and good for a starter platform. Keep up great work and have a wonderful day.

I literally just got a Gen8 last week lol. Looks amazing, but because of the price I would still go with the 8. Are those headlight lenses the same size as the gen8? Cuz i need to swap the crystal clears to those.
They should have stuck with the v2 style housing and fitted a u joint style axle I have 2 gen 8s they have both crashed hard several times never broke and if it did you could get a brass one
We bought the Gen9 Saturday, and the axle shaft pin already broke. Hopefully it was just a fluke on my Gen9 and not anything to do with the new design. We filed a warranty claim on it this morning and hope to hear back from the company soon.

Scale is kind of irrelevant since they base it off the RC chassis wheelbase which someone pulled out of thin air; and not the actual full size vehicle's wheelbase... I have been out on trails and rocks with some people with the Gen 8s and they would go anywhere far more expensive and larger name brand rigs would go. Also props to Redcat for not using a friggen Jeep or Toyota body. Pretty solid review of the Gen 9 even with the broken part. Snow man should have had his seat belt on though.

I recently bought a new scale crawler and it was a toss up of weather or not I should get this one or the Traxxas TRX4. I choose the TRX4 for the simple fact is that I can walk into every hobby shop in Utah buy the parts that I need if I was to break something and not have to wait for it to ship. Redcat on the other hand I can't walk into any one of my nearest hobby shops and buy the parts that I need I have to wait for Redcat to ship the part to me and I have to wait 2-3 business days for the part to arrive to me
We need a RTR prerunner from Redcat👍😎

Good for Redcat for continuing to make improvements. I really wish the body was closer to actual scale but I understand the reasoning.
That is a very nice, scale appearing snowman! Well done!

14:02 - My Gen8 V1 has metal covers the same as these, maybe they added a couple more double shear points in its design, but same for the most-part.
Videography is second to none in the R/C world. Thank you for an honest review.
Wow! Thanks!
The harder plastics are more brittle of coarse but in the housings it helps maintain gear mesh and bearing performance.
It hit a rock in 2nd gear. That's how it broke. To be expected
