I think Nintendo made the 2DS for people who don't want to pay an extra 50$ for the 3D feature. Honestly, I never used the 3D feature, so I think this is a nice less expensive alternative to the 3DS XL.
I never use the 3d feature as well. Plus, you don't have to open it up to get the micro SD card out😀

Jono Marshall depends on which game and the intensity, you can put half intensity or how much you like. The game can make shit use of it or make your eyes alt + 4 on everything and if you’re unlucky, whoever else looks at it will die too

My original 3DS XL is going into retirement. Makes sense, I've been using it for quite a while. Having an all-new DS (and a new model, no less) is going to feel weird! I'm getting the Animal Crossing 2DS XL even though I have the game (I've been dying to get a special edition DS for ages but knew I needed to suck my OG 3DS dry).

Let me just paste my answer to another, similar comment, OK?
I'm tired of people saying that 3D makes them feel sick... Just get a *New* 3DS, with eye tracking. I have a New 3DS XL and I can literally look at it at any angle, just the camera has to see me. Only times I lose focus is when I'm having a really bumpy car ride or when the camera is dirty. During normal gameplay, I never have any problems, and I have 3D on all the time. I can't even imagine playing Super Mario 3D Land or any TLoZ in 2D... I tried and it's waaay more difficult when you can't see the depth of the pit in Link Between Worlds or distance from next platform in Mario. In conclusion, there's no way I'm trading my New 3DS XL for any other version.

I love the 2DSXL. Only thing I didn't like was the stylus. However in Japan there are ones that extend out and fit the 2DS. You can get them imported and not really expensive.
That's what I did. It was less expensive than amazon, and it was new!

The small stylus is fine. Not many games use it and the ones that do, you can just buy the larger stylus if you need to.
It'd be cool if it came in an all matte black finish.

It's a shame that people keep writing off the 3D as a gimmick. It's become second nature to play particular games with it enabled. Fire Emblem Awakening and Bravely Default made use of it in such an amazing way, especially the later just absolutely gorgeous. Lazy crap found in Pokémon X and Y and Smash 4 is crap I’ll give you that but other games more than make up for it. I'm remembering more now; 3D Classics: Kirby's Adventure and Super Mario 3D to Hell with your "3D was a gimmick" what rubbish
No forward-facing speakers on a handheld-console? Disgraceful. A smaller stylus only forsakes what the original concept was but Hell, games don't even use the mic anymore Nintendo ought to call the contemporary 3DS for what it is, a God damn Gameboy. They just don't make games like WarioWare Touched anymore...

KP-48 The Switch lacks games, but it can hook up to a TV and would still be cheaper than a PS4 portable. Not many people are going to spend $400 on a video game console. That's why the PS4 pro failed. I really do hope that a PS4 portable happens though.

...or a PalmPilot. A stylus that size was very common for pressure sensitive touch screens back in the day before capacitive touch screens.

Wow, the 2 TN screens and speaker placement? I think I will stick with my NEW 3DS XL. That being said, if you are a first time buyer into the Nintendo 3DS console family, I think the NEW 2DS XL is the way to go.

Glad you are enjoying your new gaming unit. All your saves should have moved onto your new SD card when you did a system transfer from old 3DS to NEW 2DS XL. I am sure you know if you had a bigger size SD card in your old 3DS, you would need the same or bigger size in your NEW 2DS XL to make sure the system transfer will go smoothly.
I couldn't transfer, it was broken. I called Nintendo, and I have all my data back! :D

The Game Card Slot's cover is very useful. It makes sure that the slot doesn’t get Dusty and that the game inside won’t accidentally 'eject' when you’re playing (looking at you, Nintendo 3DS XL).

My favorite design is by FAR the original 3ds. The slick metallic design and the black top on the inside makes it look super amazing.
I still have mine that was bought when it was first launched.

I loved that design too, wish they'd make the new ones like that, and the stylus too! I still have my red original 3DS I got on July 2013 when I was 6. It still turns on, but it randomly turns off so I had to stop using it and got a Galaxy theme New 3DS XL. I really like the galaxy thing and of course the bigger screens, more memory and stylus, but I really liked the shiny design.
It looks good at first but as is the problem with most devices that use that type of material, it quickly smudges and in the long term looks pretty bad. It's not durable at all, scratches easily, and smudges easily. It really sacrifices practicality for the aesthetic which I'm really not a fan of.

i recently bought one of these and i’m personally very satisfied with it. the only things i found annoying were the top screen and it’s surrounding areas getting dust and fingerprints easily (i’m assuming the white/orange version doesn’t have that problem tho) and the speakers being at the bottom of the system which makes it harder to hear the game if you’re not wearing headphones
my only problem is that it gets scratched very easily. True the speakers are a problem to many people, but i got used to it after 3 days

After many years of gaming i bought a new 2ds xl this morning. As a old school and o.g. gamer i recommend this system. It looks gorgeous and plays nes and snes games! The only weak thing about this system is that the screen is a bit loose. Iam in love with Nintendo again after the gba sp. 5 out of 5!

yes. you definitely need an upgrade. I myself have the new 3ds xl
it doesn't really offer that much over a regular 3DS model, just snes games and a very small amount of games that are on new 3DS and not regular 3DS, and all of the good ones are on other platforms too (Xenoblade is on Wii and Wii U, The Binding of Isaac Rebirth on a lot of other things, etc.). If you have that money to throw around but your regular 3DS works fine, just get some new games instead. If your regular 3DS is kind of falling apart, then sure

Tbh if my New 3DS XL broke I'd just buy this one as a replacement as it's cheaper, I never use the 3D Screens, the Micro SD Card isn't a pain in the ass to put in, and it'll fit in my current case I have.
Here's my opinion:
If you, the consumer, already own a ''NEW 3DS''... then you don't need a ''NEW 2DS''.
If you, the consumer, already owns a vanilla 3DS/2DS... then you should bought a NEW 3DS/2DS.

if you have a switch and an OG 3ds imo just forget about it. I was in your situation between either saving up for months for a switch or getting this one since the hinge on my old 3DS XL broke. I ended up opting for the N2DS XL cause I love pokemon games.
What if I don't have a 3DS or a 2DS? Should I get a 2DS XL or just go with a 3DS?
My 3ds non new screen died I got old style refurbished around time new came out. The screen just died.
+TheCommentGuy8, my 3DS XL is one of the first releases. I bought it back in 2012 and after these 5 years, it's right-side hinged finally gave out, meaning it's taped down with GORILLA duct tape (sturdy af). However, I need to get a new handheld eventually, so I'd say anyone who needs a replacement or back-up handheld should purchase the cheap 2DS or NEW 2DS XL.
I grabbed up the Pokeball version.
I only got it because I needed to replace my broken 3ds xl and the Pokeball design sold it for me.
I don't use the 3d function ever anyways.
Switch Lite should take 2DS' example.

You realize that the 2DS/2DS XL is really geared towards younger gamers? That's why it's lighter, that's why the stylus is smaller, that's why the cartridge slot/SD card slot are covered.

For everyone that does not know.... you can slide the stylus pen open so it gets bigger (i am not to sure!) But the nintendo 3ds stylus pen does slide open
Heck yea! If you haven't experienced the new 3ds xl and want to experience it without 3d, this is the way to go!

Yep! Games just won't have a 3D option to play but they should still work just fine.

All 3ds games run on a 2ds with no 3d feature obviously.
Huy Nguyen A 2DS is a 3DS. They're the same family of systems. It's just a "clever" name. 3DS was called 3DS after DS not because it's the third system, but because it has three dimensional support. The 2DS isn't a different system, really or an older one. It just has the 3D slider disabled so no visual three dimensional image popping out of the screen nonsense. It's called 2DS to be clever because it only supports two dimensional mode. But all games are playable in 2D mode. I've never even once uses the 3D slider on my 3DS. It hurts your eyes and doesn't work well.
Edit: I have used it on other 3DS systems before I bought one and it gave me headaches.

I do love the 3DS XL and I did use the 3D feature often at the start but bc I wear glasses, I usually take them off so I can get comfy and play, but due to that I have to get a little closer to the screen, and then the 3D feature isn’t as good if that makes sense. the 2DS XL seems perfect for what I like and I know lots of people that recommend this one 💛🥺
