My friend was one of the main makeup artist on this movie and they had to pick and choose what gore they were going to show because of the budget, time, and crew available.

I like that Shyamalan always tries to do something different, it's either going to fly or crash. That's why I believe he is eventually going to do something again that's going to be a classic.
I'm definitely interested in the ranking of all his films but disappointed to hear that this could be your least favorite. I'm looking forward to seeing it, just to be back in the cinema again.
I saw it yesterday.. 10/10. I was so entertained. I laughed, felt anxiety, disoriented and scared. Everything I’m looking for in a thriller/horror/mystery.
@@hanneke546 I saw it two days ago, 5/10, the first half was hilarious with that dialogue. The second half fell flat for me tho especially cuz the main mom and dad got so annoying. I also wasn’t a fan of the way mental illness was portrayed, and Shyamalan tends to not handle that subject matter well. I felt so bad for the hot mom tho she had it the worst
Yes, please rank all of his films!! Totally will see this, but might need to wait for streaming because our area is locking down a bit more right now. Thanks for the great review!
I love M . Night so much his movies are always a fun 'wild' trip. He's one of the few directors where you almost always know what you're gonna get and you can yell at the screen at home with your friends
It doesn't sound like a glowing review but hearing you talk about how wild and awkward it is makes me excited to watch it this weekend. I enjoy every Shyamalan film except Last Airbender to varying extents and I love that he's making interesting original films again even if they don't always land.
I watched it yesterday and I enjoyed it. It was something new and I actually enjoy the Happening, there I said it 😂. I can always appreciate when something new is presented in cinema as opposed to something safe.
I’m glad you mentioned how awkward and odd it was. There was just something weird about it. The way the one character just kind of stared off into space most of the time. Some of the interactions and dialogue felt really forced, and I couldn’t tell if it was intentional or just bad acting. And also the way something major would be happening and one character would just not be in the scene for no explainable reason. That being said, I really liked this movie. I was invested the entire time.
He's great, just not in this movie. Spoiler: He's wasted as the cliche character who is overly aggressive, and is annoying as hell. Granted, there's a reason behind his aggressive behavior. But there was zero reason for the other characters allowing him to walk around with a knife throughout the majority of the movie.
Loved when Emma gets all happy seeing the Antlers and A Night In Soho posters 😊 Saw Old tonight (first time at a movie theater since The Invisible Man) and REALLY liked it. Definitely agree that it won't be for everyone but I thought they did some extremely clever things with the premise and the "less you see" kind of scary things. Also thought the camera work was fantastic with angles and timing for reveals. Also, so happy to see a new Come With Me, always a favorite on the channel 😊
Honestly I had a great time with this movie. But I definitely can understand how people wont. To me it's my second favorite M night movie. Alex wolf did such a great job. Solid 8/10

I've just got back from seeing it. I liked the concept, bit like a 'Twilight Zone' episode. I enjoyed it, but it probably could have been a bit better. 6/10 from me.
You made a lot of the points I had issues with. Those aside one thing I DID like from the theater experience is some of those shots were beautiful. The shot composition and colors used were excellent! Another great review!
I want to see this movie. I read the graphic novel after seeing the trailer. But that doesn't really tell you what's going on. So I'm interested to see what the twist is in this movie. I'm gonna wait, though
Definitely going to check this one out! I like oddball films, so sounds like this one will deliver (plus, M. Night films always get people talking even if they aren't always solid films per se). Thanks for providing your impressions! Would love to see an M Night ranking video in the future. Stay safe!
I love when you react to the trailers! You now have me seriously considering not watching trailers anymore because it seems like a lot of the time they show too much. Love your channel!
I just got back and I had a great time with this movie! "WILD" is a very appropriate word! But to me that was a good thing. ^__^ There was some weird awkward choices though. Like in a very heavy scene towards the end, when the camera just decides to wander off instead of focusing on the characters. It goes back-and-forth between the ocean and the cliff and I was just like "...did a 5 year-old get ahold of the camera?"
I wish I had as much self control when it came to avoiding trailers. I thought when watching the trailer for Old.. man.. seems like they are giving away a lot.. thanks for verifying this. Another great video!
Thanks for the review, Emma. I think I will wait until DVD rental since the film sounds like an average M. Night one. We all know how hit and miss he can be in story, but his visual style is always a treat. If you ever decide to do a ranking of M. Night's films, I would definitely watch it and share my list in the comments as well.
Fantastic review. I’m late catching up on so many movies…. I totally share your post-film energy. It was a mess but I liked the mess! I couldn’t look away. “So bad it’s good”and “wtf” come to mind. i have (unfortunately) seen the trailer and even when i did i just got an "odd" feeling. like when the mother shouts "there's something wrong with this beach!" or when the son (Alex Wolff) appears and he says "Mom! i'm right here!", it all feels kinda robotic, exaggerated and Nic Cage-ish, and that interested me veeeery much, i can't wait to see it
It's Okay Emma😅 I am one of the Very few who watches the trailer and forgets too easily in the next morning. I watched the first trailer like 2 months ago and didn't even remember much about it lol.
I just finally watched this on demand and I completely agree. The best word to describe it is awkward. It wasn't terrible, but I am definitely glad I didn't see it in the theatre.
Emma!!! This is amazing! I love your trailer reaction, will you be doing more of those? I must say my least fave mdawg films are Lady in the Water, the village and the happening. Can't wait to see your ranking!
You definitely had the same exact opinions about the movie that I had. It reminded me of a first draft of a movie, something that you take in to the execs and the test audiences and then you actually craft it into a working movie that actually works on all levels. It definitely is memorable, just didn't quite work, the pacing was off, was a solid first draft with an interesting concept.
This was my choice for 1st movie back to the theaters after a year and a half. Despite the reviews, I trusted M. Night and he did not disappoint, I loved it. My family choose to see a better reviewed movie, The Green Night, trusting A24, and they hated it. I do not understand the reviews when it come to M. Night, so I never go buy them and I am always rewarded with a movie freaky and outside the box, but also one that makes me laugh and cry. He often leaves me feeling something genuine, and I know he purposely puts into his movies, love, understanding, faith and hope..
Along with avoiding trailers, I think it's a good idea to avoid cast list as well. One of the coolest moments in the movie was when they showed Alex Wolff and thomasin McKenzie. Especially with how long he made us wait to see them. There was another time where a twist was spoiled because the cast list revealed who that character really was
I applaud you for not watching the trailer! I wish I hadn't. No wonder you thought it was so WILD going in completely blind! great reaction, I saw it last night and loved it. It was very M. Night.
It's really interesting that you described it like that as far as it feeling like M Night read the comic, being interested, and then just kind of cranking out a film version without a lot of passion. That is EXACTLY how I felt about his adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I have always told people that it felt like instead of watching the series, he just read the wikipedia article and churned out a movie version. It just felt kind of passionless and like it checked the boxes.
Good review I’m defiantly seeing a lot of mixed reactions to this movie, to be honest, some of his movies are a hit and missed for me but I'm still rooting for him and going to check out the movie.
Still think I’ll check this one out eventually! Great review!!! It’s funny how you said it reminded you of goosebumps because I heard he loves stuff like that. I heard the sixth sense was heavily inspired by an are you afraid of the dark episode (tale of the dream girl I think?) anyway! Awesome as always!!!!
Last night in Soho is my most anticipated film since last year! Old is BONKERS and I giggled all the way through. I do have to admit I’ve thought about the concept often since watching
Okay, so I probably need to lower my expectations :/ I'm still excited about the concept and knowing there's gore that's definitely a plus in my book. I'm seeing it tomorrow, still kinda can't wait
I just watched this movie last night for the first time. Though it is not my favorite movie ever it has really left an impression on me. As an individual who is quickly approaching my 40's, my mind has been occupied lately with thoughts of what my life could have been, decisions I should have made differently, and just the permanency of my past. I have also begun to realize that I am genuinely terrified of getting older. I am also very afraid of not living my life how I imagined it should be. Though life typically lasts more than one day, sometimes those days meld together in my memory as this kind of blob of blurry instances. The passage of time in this film is meant to be exaggerated but it also kinda feels like how quickly our lives really pass by. Ugh... watching this film has filled me with dread and sadness. I really enjoyed this film a lot.
I remember seeing the trailer and it looked great and then seeing the text "From the Director of Signs and The Village" and my smile disappeared instantly.
I've seen the trailer a few times in front of other films and I'm not surprised the latter half is riddled with spoilers. It felt that way watching it. When cinemas here reopen in 100 years, I'll watch it on a cheap ticket. Just to say I have.
I've just finished watching it and honestly I thought the acting was atrocious but I don't know if that was intentional with it being awkward like you said! The "reveal" I thought was a complete let down I mean it was okay but I was expecting big things with it being M. Night
The graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters was to me at best a C+ especially coming from people who have made way more experimental and cool stuff. Sounds like the film is about the same. But thanks for making it seem like not a complete waste of time.
I'm actually bummed that I watched your reaction to the trailer bc I had forgot the scenes and you said they showed too much and now I've seen them again aisfiuahfsua
Hey! I know this is a bit much of a question to ask. I like you everytime Emma just for the helps. But, I was wondering if you could put your letter rating somewhere constant in your reviews. I really just want to know first if you gave it an awesome score or not. Love your work! Thank you
I'll wait until it's streaming. I am still interested in seeing it even if it could be his worst, though several of his other films were disappointing to me.
I'll wait untill it's streaming, but will definitely see it. Reserving my return to Theatres for Halloween Kills or the new James Bond. Think this one looks pretty good though - also...every movie should at least have a small Nicolas Cage cameo 😂 Thought Colors out of Space, Mandy and Willy's Wonderland recently were all pretty damn fun.
I loved it. *mild spoiler alert* It felt like there were multiple levels to it - the concept itself, yes but also the more allegorical aspects of it - the futility of life, survival, vanity, love and in the end - simply enjoying the short time we have together (sandcastles?). The 'twist' was fairly non existent, but I kinda respected that. If a twist is expected, then it becomes somewhat more surprising to not have one, or at least not rely on it. I thought it was visually beautiful, a subtle yet well executed score. I certainly see that it is not a film without flaws, but overall I really, really did like this one.
I was pleasantly surprised I went to see it at a discount theater even though I wanted to see it Before I decided to wait. I do think that’s good but I actually really liked it and I’m very happy about that because I was concerned I wouldn’t like it but the simplicity really appeals to me and the awkwardness I guess too. This was a fun watch after the movie because I didn’t want to be swayed too much either way glad you didn’t hit it and loved your reaction to the trailer because I had seen it so many times before I saw the movie but since I waited I had a cooling off period before I saw it Sotheby’s trailer didn’t ruin it and wasn’t too bad XD there was only one time Where what I knew from the trailer was sort of a spoiler but only because my friend said something and I was like no that can’t happen because of the trailer XD
Learned from Possessed By Horror that M. Night likes to meet that PG13 rating, so I’m sure that’s why certain things weren’t shown, but definitely odd? The Nick Cage awkwardness is spot on. I was definitely slightly uncomfortable the whole time, but never frightened.
I read the graphic novel it was based on last year. I'm wondering how true it is to the source material. I'm probably going to hold off until this one's on VOD to find out. It's a bummer how hit or miss his films can be because he's made some incredible ones. Maybe he should stick to original ideas instead of adaptations?
I’m that weirdo who refuses to watch movie trailers because I think it’s gonna spoil it lol can’t wait to show my mom the end of this video to prove it’s justified😂
I watched Old yesterday, and I came back to watch your reaction to the trailer. Yeah, I 100% agree. If I'd seen the trailer before watching, I would have been very disappointed that I already knew almost everything that happened. That said, I really enjoyed it! Gave it 4/5 stars on Letterboxd. And I'm already itching to watch it again. Lol.
Watching it as I write.... terrible! Feels like a Sunday afternoon television movie... I know now why you laughed! I'm still in shock! "Lack of love and passion" Well said!!
I think is a good idea for you to know at least what's the movie gonna be about or watch the trailer before watching the actual movie. That way at least you got a slight idea of what is going to be about.
Emma always giggles when she gets back in the car no matter what movie it is and it makes me so happy

Lol! “It felt like Nicolas Cage should be somewhere on that island!” So hilarious! Say no more. 😂👌
😂😂😂
All comments made this video didn’t take into account The Happening… A film I refuse to acknowledge as a part of M.Nights work 😂😂

Oh I'm still going to see this.
Oh no! I did warn ya!
Hey! I know this is a bit much of a question to ask. I like you everytime Emma just for the helps. But, I was wondering if you could put your letter rating somewhere constant in your reviews. I really just want to know first if you gave it an awesome score or not. Love your work! Thank you
Hey! Films are scored by stars traditionally, not letters! It’s not a paper. This is how most scoring works! So 6/10 is 3 out of 5 stars!
Nice jacket!! Dripping
Did the characters purchase adult sizes of the same bathing suits while on the beach?
Haha they half explain that
I loved it.
*mild spoiler alert*
It felt like there were multiple levels to it - the concept itself, yes but also the more allegorical aspects of it - the futility of life, survival, vanity, love and in the end - simply enjoying the short time we have together (sandcastles?).
Interesting note about Colour Out of Space - that's like, the good version of this
Also agree about Abbey Lee - she was easily the best part
Me and my mate sat in H-15 and 16 for our screening today lmao
I stopped at the trailer reaction so i can watch this film, wholly unspoilt. Thanks for the review!
Hope you like it Meghan! I was thinking of you!
I’m excited to see this movie 🎥 🍍
I think is a good idea for you to know at least what's the movie gonna be about or watch the trailer before watching the actual movie. That way at least you got a slight idea of what is going to be about.
