    They shot themselves in the foot with the first. In terms of getting a likable antihero… him being a murderer is one thing but once you add a Turkey baster he was too far gone. I actually liked Dont Breathe 2 but was so weirded out that they did a attempted turnaround on this character. Sorry buddy… I can’t see you as a fatherly dude after the first… you were still fun to watch though LOL.

      I was just gonna write this. The guy turned out to be the lowest of the low with that Turkey baster, can’t see me ever rooting for a guy like that.

    My theory is that they take an unused (cheap) script, slap a known title on it, change it to fit the known characters and sit back to see the money roll in. At least that's how I feel about some of todays sequels.

    Honestly, I think this movie was doomed from the get-go cause it was ridiculous that they were trying to get the audience to root for a perpetrator of SA.

      I saw the first one, and what I found disturbing is that I was in fact rooting for the villain! It was a horror movie, and they were thieves who thought they were going to have an easy job robbing the old blind guy. If the movie succeeded with him killing all of them, including the girl, GREAT!

    When I first heard a couple of years ago that they planning to make a sequel, I was mad, I was like: NOOOOO, don't ruin this movie, better do a sequel to Evil Dead with Jane Levi. But after I saw it today I'm actually not mad at it at all. It was very entertaining. And I really liked the twists. They definitely seem unrealistic and have a feel of telenovela shocking reveals but they quite surprised me and I love getting strong emotions from plot twists.

    Emma - I appreciate your non-spoiler review! However, I hope you can come back to this film with spoilers because it feels like it needs to be discussed in further detail just HOW FAR off the rails this story goes! I was speechless when the third act arrived because I was just not prepared for how far the writers were willing to go. I was excited to sit through another chapter of the story to see where the writers would take it, but I just wasn’t prepared for what we got! (PS. the gore was an A+ at least, and the film was gorgeously shot)

    Loved hearing your opinions! I reviewed this on my channel too and I actually quite enjoyed it to be fair, I agree it feels very different from the first one and in terms of the story from the first one they’re very disconnected but if I think of it as a separate movie I actually quite liked it!

  • @woodsro
    @woodsro 3 года назад

    I was at that screening! I was working up the courage to say hello after the movie but you bolted out of there, and fair enough because that movie kinda stunk and I would have come off as some creepy awkward dude anyway hahaha. Though you DID leave before the end credit scene but don’t worry you didn’t miss much.
    *SPOILER WARNING*
    At the end the dog jogs over to blind man’s body and sniffs it and it zooms in close on his fingers. You think they’ll twitch but they don’t. Still, possible set up for a sequel?
    Man they really love those dogs. In the Don’t Breathe Universe the hierarchy of horrific crimes, according to the writers, from most to least offensive goes:
    1. Killing a dog
    2. Organ stealing
    3. Kidnapping and rape.
    It’s just INSANE to me the direction they took with this one! I think Fiona O’Shaughnessy was my favourite part, the only performance that seemed to match the kind of film it was, or was trying to be. Or it could be just that I love her from that ICONIC British series Utopia. But she did manage to get the only intentional laugh in the film.

    Interesting review (I always enjoy your reviews even when I don't agree). That said, I really liked this one a lot, although not quite as much as the original, which I'd give a 9/10 (I'd give this one an 8/10).
    One of the things I love about going to the cinema is the audience reaction. I saw this in NYC and no one laughed at anything. There were some gasps at the twists and gore, but certainly no laughter. (NB: I'm usually the one to laugh and that didn't happen either.)

    Not going to theatres, but still looking forward to it. I kinda hope they didn't 'redeem' The blind man too much. Looked a bit like The Punisher meets Blind Fury. I'd still prefer him as a bad guy meeting bad guys. Will reserve judgement for when I see it though.
    I generally don't have too much of a problem with sequels putting it's main character in a different situation or genre swapping. Eg - going from horror to action and back like the Alien franchise, or Terminator. Or The difference between the first two Riddick movies. Sometimes it spices things up wonderfully. Other times...it doesn't. Other times you get Kate Beckinsale running around in latex shooting others for 4 movies and that's totally fine too. (although the one with Rhona Mitra was fun too) Just like John Wick. Or Rocky.
    Also...I don't want a prequel showing The Blind Man in wartime, as a good guy and how he got to be such a badass - going from a good hearted man to a vicious killer and returning disillusioned ending with 'that event' that made him what he is...

    I just went to see this one today and albeit I didn't rewatch the first one, I thought the ridiculousness felt similar to the first one, which I really liked. He's kinda a batty, off the rails character that finds himself in a crazy situation in the first one and I feel like in the second one, they apply a similar formula to the plot. And I TOTALLY think there will be a third - like that last scene where the kid introduces herself - she will totally be back as a college student, in a crazy situation where she has to fend off intruders 😂

    It's quite obvious that Fede and Rodo were trying to make Norman (The Blind Man) a somewhat sympathetic character, due the overall change in tone from the first movie to this one. While both Stephen Lang and Madelyn Grace are good in their roles, we don't get the character development with the thugs as we did in the first one, so, we don't care about them.

    • @BenWhigham
      @BenWhigham 3 года назад +1

      Do you not find it a bit ridiculous that they tried to make the blind man the 'hero' in a way and also, knowing what he did in the first one, it's a bit hard to watch him be this sort of 'father' to the little girl. It's a bit silly.

    • @A_YouTube_Commenter
      @A_YouTube_Commenter 3 года назад

      @@BenWhigham Sort of. But he had that girl in the first movie impregnated and trapped in the basement. She died and you kind of wonder where did this one come from. He was no hero. He admits to being a monster in the end. He knows he did evil things. Saving the current girl was sort of a redemption arc,but it's all a matter of bad people and worse people. Even the girl wanted to leave from how he was raising her. The Hispanic girl seemed like a decent person,but she wasn't an option at the end. The guy is a shell shocked veteran and far from being a good guy.

    Oh my god was that a poster for Antlers?!!? SO EXCITED. I'm also excited to see Candyman, I watched the three originals last week on my nightshifts.
    I'm probably still going to see this but it's disappointing that it's pretty much a whole separate movie that's not really tied to the first.
    I want to ask you two questions: can you please do a video recommending horror that could happen in real life? Think like The Strangers, Hush. No supernatural elements, but not completely convoluted. And, I'm going to undertake the massive task of watching all the Blumhouse horror movies. Should I do it in order of release, or should I watch the movies in each franchise one after the other and then the single movies? Thanks for reading this essay.

    I thought Stephen Lang was brilliant in the roll as the blind man.
    I had more expectations for this sequel, shame really because this could have had a few sequels if they kept the film and scenes right with tension.

    You had the strangest take on this movie I’ve seen so far. Not trying to knock your opinion though. I think you going in without seeing the trailer is a lot of why though. The rest of us knew a lot more going in so I think we were more able to accept it. I don’t know but great job like always

    My Score:
    Personal: 2/10 - Movie was trash - I was bored half way, the plot was so far fetched. Some stuff did not make any sense, it was hard to buy into the action and the reasons for what was happening when I was just thinking "this makes no sense".
    Originality: 2/10 - There are far more original takes on 'home invasion" - I appreciated a little that there was a twist at all (who the girl really is) but the movie was already too far gone even when that was revealed. And what they did AFTER that was ever dumber.
    Scare: 1/10 - I did not jump once, I was not ever really scared for the characters and because you were not 'rooting' for the invaders at all when they started to be killed I was like 'who cares!'
    I did appreciate how they kept that second dog alive, even to the end, that was the best part of the movie! :)

    I liked the movie fine, but yeah... They shouldn't have pushed so hard to make him an antihero.
    If they would have left the whole organ transfer thing out and just showed them to be marginally worse than him as far as homes go for a child, I would have bought him being a better choice for the girl... Despite what a monster he is. Then he would have still been seen as evil, but just a lesser evil.
    Instead they made her other choice so outlandish and wacky in attempt to make him the good guy.

    I liked it almost as much as the first, I thought the story they went with was unique I do feel like they shot themselves in the foot with the whole evil vs evil aspect of it, I think if they stuck with the first half and made it good vs the blind man then it would've been awesome. I do disagree with everyone saying how dare they make us "root for the rapist", It never felt like that was the case.

      Really? I haven’t watched the film, but from what I seen online he was like a martyr in the end for the child. He was the lesser of two evils presented. You don’t make things like that tug on heartstrings without some kind of character “redemption” in mind. She decided to keep her name he gave her, choosing to accept his “paternal” role. I refuse to watch it because of this and I still think I’ll listen to those who advised against it, as your opinion seems more contrarian. You cannot make a character like him morally grey and I hate that they even tried to.

      @@holliegriffin5361 I think he was morally wrong,but it wasn't so black and white. An evil person is capable of good things just as a good person can be fallible. The kid was the center of the film. She had 2 sides here. Neither one being ideal.

    I just watched the movie. Now I have the Alvarez meter
    1)Don’t breathe great gimmick solid filming.
    2) Evil Dead dark but the characters run stale .
    3) don’t breathe 2 a blown out version of don’t breathe where the movie spends more time reasoning to you why the first installments ending was passable and less time delving into the story. Additionally, if you have watched the Evil Dead remake ending its like Alvarez used that ending and reworked it here.
    Someone female loses something in order to make a change.
    Sunrises.

    You leave the room when they're playing trailers? Over here you're most likely already seated when the movie trailers start playing. They play after generic commercials (Coca Cola, Magnum, some beer brand...) and before the actual movie starts. Meanwhile the cinemas already darken the room, so it's a pain to find your seat otherwise.
