You're the second person who brought up the IT rankings which leads me to feel like I might need to re-watch them both. As far as rankings go I smack dab right next to each other with 2 right above 1. The beginning of 2 does stand out the most to me personally as the most horrific moment which played a big role in that ranking. I do really love hereditary. Maybe it's just my love of Nic Cage, I'm not sure. The dark lore of Mandy, combined with the trippy cult and brutality of it all made me instantly fall in love with it. Probably is a stretch to be above Hereditary but I still love Mandy (love Hereditary as well)
I will be revisiting this film before the end of the year so subscribe and hit the bell icon to see where it's ranked when I do a redux version of this list
Hereditary seems to be one of the most hyped up horror movies however past the half way point it becomes quite predicable with the ending feeling super generic

Somehow I missed The Menu when going through my spreadsheet. In my 2022 list I had it above X but below Black Phone. Rest assured when I make this list again at the end of 2024 I will remember to include it! Also you're the second person to recommend Speak No Evil. It looks really good! I've added it to my watchlist! Thank you for watching and thank you for the rec! Please subscribe if you haven't already!
Agreed. I had forgotten about The Menu, but no clue how! The original Speak No Evil was super underrated, every horror fan should check it out before the new release!!
Talk to Me, Barbarian, See No Evil (2022), and When Evil Lurks some of the best horror movies from recent years IMO. Honorable mention to Infinity Pool, only because it's not necessarily "horror". Great list here! The Invitation, Green Room, Bone Tomahawk are underrated films I still frequently recommend. Fresh is another great rec that flew under the radar IMO.
2014: It Follows 2015: The Gift 2016: The Conjuring 2 2017: Get Out 2018: A Quiet Place 2019: Us 2020: The Invisible Man 2021: A Quiet Place Part II 2022-23: Scream 5 & Scream VI 2024: Abigail
2017 must've been a miserable year for horror if you seriously put get out on number 1. This movie was hilarious, not scary and so on the nose, that no other director would get away with this level of on the nose messaging. The praise Peele gets feels almost astroturfed. His movies lack cleverness. It's almost like a Shamaylan movie without the twist.
@@k4yser I'm sorry you feel that way! I completely disagree with that take. I think Peele is one of the most exciting new directors right now and it's because his reveals are consistently good as opposed to M. Knight who is inconsistent. I wasn't crazy about Us but I even found that to be very good
I just watched When Evil Lurks on the recommendation of this video, and DAMN! That was a nasty little piece... and I mean that in all the very best ways. It was also fun listening to you slowly gain an appreciation for a few horror subgenres as you were exposed to more films, and you ran through an IMPRESSIVELY long list of films without lagging in this video. Well done! You have earned my sub admirably.
Thank you very much for the kind words! It's been a pleasure to watch all these horror films and really dive into new stuff for me personally and I'm super happy to get to share that!
I quite enjoyed it! I understand that it's not for everyone but I think it shows tremendous promise for the director. Maybe just 2 or 3 years ago I wouldn't have liked it as much but I think it's a special film considering what it was able to do on a shoestring budget. Thank you for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already!
Malignant should have made the 2021 list, extremely stylish and underrated film. Also Pearl for 2022, though I get not everyone loved it as much as I did.
Pearl is one of my favorite horror films of recent memory. The juxtaposition of tone and visuals left an uneasy feeling throughout the whole film. Amazing! Mia goth at the end deserves so much credit for her acting abilities.
I honestly love this entire list! I've watched so many horror movies over the years and you've actually given me at least four or five that I've never seen before and now I'm excited so to check them out thank you so much!
Annihilation has always been super underrated IMO! Maybe not the scariest movie, but it's far more complex and the themes and visual delivery were next level comparitively. Don't know if you have Fresh on this list, but one of my favorite recommendations to anyone, horror fan or not.
Yeah I feel like I'm in the minority when it comes to how much I like Annihilation! Also I haven't seen Fresh yet and will be watching it for when I redo this video after year's end!
Some more movies I would have mentioned: “Mother !”(2017) “Ghostland” (2018) “Hush”(2016) “Raw”(2016) “Unsane” (2018) “Upgrade”(2018) “Infinity pool”(2023) “Gretel & Hansel”(2020) “Malignant” (2021)
Mother!, Unsane and Malignant are the only three from that last that I've seen. mother! is a movie I watched before starting my Letterboxd account so I didn't add it but I will definitely be watching it in the future firstly to watch all of Aronofsky's works but also for a video like this at years end. Malignant and Unsane both barely missed the cut for inclusion. Both films, but especially Unsane felt really promising in the first half but turned me off a bit in the second half. As for the remaining films, I have add them to the watchlist so thank you very much for the recs! Thank you for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already!
Infinity Pool 100% even if it's not strictly horror. Also Fresh (2020 I think, super underrated. The Eye's of My Mother wasn't my favorite but would absolutely have a place on this list. Even The Nightingale deserves an honorable mention!

@@21stCENTURYSCHIZOIDMAN Toni Collette absolutely killed it in that movie, no doubt about it. I still remember the feeling of dread I felt during that telephone pole scene. I'm glad you liked the video and believe me I've been hearing a lot of people who really disagree with that take. I see where everyone is coming from because the kid actors are so good and the humor is too. The opening of It Chapter two is the best moment of the series for me though
I will be honest, the swimming pool scene isn't one that I remember fondly but I liked so much from this film that I was able to overlook it. In my opinion it's one of those fresh premises that really stuck, along the line of what Talk to Me, Midsommar did and Get Out. I will say, I see where you're coming from though. Anyone here who has seen 1922 but not read the book? I’m usually not like this, but 1922 is my favorite short story (maybe story in general) of all time and I remember HATING the film. I remember they changed some really simple stuff that didn’t need to change, and they also copied dialogue exactly in spots that were less important. The whole thing was just off putting bc I knew how good it could’ve been. Is it worth trying a second watch?
I don't think you're missing a whole lot. You may go from hating it to slightly liking it but I don't think you'll ever love it as much as you like the book. I haven't read so I can't speak to it from that angle but I thought the movie was only ok to good (3/5). Thank you for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already!
Yes it was, in fact I still have to watch Alien Romulus but I'm 100% going to watch it before I make a redux version of the video after the end of the year
Loved the video!! I would suggest A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night from 2014 as it is not a classic monster movie and is one I studied in a college course I took this past year and, despite my initial reservations, enjoyed immensely

Always great to see a new horror channel with new perspectives. I haven’t seen half the list so thank you! 2024 as the most recent, longlegs could have been top 5 of the decade but man does the last 20-15 minutes ruin the film for me. The writing was bad and you can clearly see they didn’t know how to end it. The whole devil and metal ball was corny. PS - hereditary at 3 is a crime! Haha good job.
I totally understand that sentiment towards Longlegs and felt very similar in theatres watching it. I've come around on it since then but I can understand your feelings. I really do love hereditary but I'm going to have to re-watch that before I update this list for year end and see if it should go higher. Thank you for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already!
I'm gonna take some inspiration for my bucket list. Agree on most of No. 1 spots until 2020 (at least among the films I've seen so far) except: 2018 (mine is Hereditary), 2020 (mine would be a tie between "The Hunt" and "The Invisible Man"). I miss "The Hunt" completely on your list. 🙂
I think that's a pretty damn apt summary! I think the cult aspects are really well done. Pough lost all family and connection and was able to be pulled into a group that would renew that bond. Thank you for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already!
Yes, I've sped it up to 1.3 or 1.35x so if you want to hear it almost exactly the way it would sound at my "natural speed" the playback rate of .75x would achieve this. Good call out! I actually have watched that before I started using Letterboxd and really liked it! I'll have to re-watch it, rate it and add it to this list next time I make it! I also had Ghost Stories watched and rated (positively) on letterboxd but made a mistake in adding it. That's another film from 2017 very much worth watching!
Thank you! I appreciate the support! I'm honestly super happy to have gained the attention of a ton of cool viewers! being able to discuss these movies with people is cool enough in it's own right and would make monetization the cherry on top!
no doubt about it! Having Aster and Eggers, two of the two most exciting directors on the block who make horror films on the team is absolutely huge! Thank you for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already!
The candyman reboot was actually awful, it was a social commentary first and actual horror film second. It tries to hit you over the head so hard with its message that it just gets boring. So much films do it better without plastering race in your face. The horror of the candyman is completely lost when his name is used as a tool to help people rather something to be feared by everyone equally
That's weird that a copy of a video would have a completely different script, cover different films and have different takes? I say at the end of the video this was inspired by Zeark! I watched his video and thought to myself, I've seen some movies that I would include if I did this list and watch it. Thumbnail was definitely inspired by him as well but also created by me. You may be surprised by this a lot of videos on RUclips are actually inspired by other people's work. If this were taboo then Watchmojo would have exhausted the majority of movie based video ideas and only one person would be able to review each movie
For some reason, the Babadook is still the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. Made me so fucking uncomfortable, and the lead ups to the jumpscares felt like eternal torture lol.
Some of the stuff with the actual Babadook was super good in my opinion. I still liked this movie but for some reason the two main characters got on my nerves a bit, that combined with the hype of the movie probably made me rate it lower than maybe it deserves. Nonetheless it is a very solid film and I can see why so many people love it! Thank you for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already!
I love horror but i gotta be honest anytime you mention claymation/stopmotion i have to look away bc that terrifies me in a way i am not interested in. I can't explain it and won't watch them i will cry and/or throw up. Idk if its just a me thing.
That's really interesting! I've never heard of someone who has that strong a response to stop motion. Maybe it's the unnatural way everything moves? Do you struggle with films like The Nightmare Before Christmas or non-horror claymation as well?
Thank you for the rec! I haven't heard of this yet so I just added it to the watchlist! I really liked this director's film Session 9 so I will check this out! Thank you for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already!

Great video. New subscriber. I would also add to your list: the visit (m night's comeback), the gift (thriller/horror/drama, still enough i consider it horror, a really interesting premise & social commentary), summer of 84, the unholy (underrated) and scream 6.
Thank you for watching and subscribing! The visit is the only movie of those five that I've watch & rated and it barely missed the cut off. If I'm being fully honest the little kid annoyed the piss out of me but it was an interesting movie/twist for sure. The gift is pretty awesome! I've seen that awhile back but don't have it rated on Letterboxd yet so I'll have to re-watch it so I can add it to the list! I'm working through the Scream series right now so before long I will eventually get to Scream 6! Those other two I'm not familiar with so I'm going to add them to my watchlist! I will say if the gore doesn't draw you in, whether it be too much or too little the film is going to fall really flat. It's pretty much the best aspect the films have to offer besides Art's performance
Great video, but that’s such an awful take that IT chapter two is better than chapter one. I agree with most of your other takes but that’s a wild statement.
You're making my think I need to re-watch the two to see how off base I am LOL! I will say from memory, and it's been a little since I've last watched them - 1 had more consistent humor and slightly better scares but 2 had a banger opening. Like 2 legitimately has one of the best horror openings in my memory and kind of can be used to some up the curse that is locked into Derry. Derry is stuck in this limbo where it's future is perpetually killed by way of children dying generation after generation because the town is breed in a cesspool of intolerance and hatred. It made me realize how deep the story was in a way I had never looked at it before which made me really appreciate 2. You may very well be right on the money but I'll have to re-watch them both to confirm. Thank you for watching! Please be sure to subscribe if you haven't already!

I have actually watched this and think it is great! I was kind of on the fence as to whether or not to include this in my horror ranking just because of it's different style and let Letterboxd decide which only classifies it as Fantasy/Comedy/Adventure though I will have to re-evaluate that when I remake this list at year end
Might not be a bad idea! I'll think about potentially changing the name. I also increased the clip speed for this video so that is definitely adding to why it sounds so fast. Not having The Menu in 2022 is criminal.
Also Speak No Evil should of made the list
Somehow I missed The Menu when going through my spreadsheet. In my 2022 list I had it above X but below Black Phone. Rest assured when I make this list again at the end of 2024 I will remember to include it! Also you're the second person to recommend Speak No Evil. It looks really good! I've added it to my watchlist!

@@spencermartin5516 There's a Danish version that came out in 2022. If you don't mind foreign films I'd highly recommend it!
@@spencermartin5516 the English adaptation isn’t out yet but the original movie is
Thank you very much for watching and for the kind words!

2015: The Gift
2016: The Conjuring 2
2017: Get Out
2018: A Quiet Place

2020: The Invisible Man
2021: A Quiet Place Part II
2022-23: Scream 5 & Scream VI
2024: Abigail
If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend Longlegs! One of my favorite films of this year!
The Killing of a Sacred Deer is absolutely a horror movie. And it’s a dang good one too. A++++
Skinamarink is my favorite horror movie. Thank you for not bullying it like 90% of people
I quite enjoyed it! I understand that it's not for everyone but I think it shows tremendous promise for the director. Maybe just 2 or 3 years ago I wouldn't have liked it as much but I think it's a special film considering what it was able to do on a shoestring budget.

Malignant should have made the 2021 list, extremely stylish and underrated film. Also Pearl for 2022, though I get not everyone loved it as much as I did.
I just found the reveal of Malignant to be off-putting for me. I do intend to watch Pearl before remaking this video at the end of the year
Pearl was def. the best of the trilogy!
Came to comment this. Love the trilogy, but pearl was the best by far
Pearl is one of my favorite horror films of recent memory. The juxtaposition of tone and visuals left an uneasy feeling throughout the whole film. Amazing! Mia goth at the end deserves so much credit for her acting abilities.
@@dwezel I have decided that this will be on my watchlist before re-making this video
I honestly love this entire list! I've watched so many horror movies over the years and you've actually given me at least four or five that I've never seen before and now I'm excited so to check them out thank you so much!
Absolutely! I'm working on adding even more to this list after years end so definitely be on the lookout for that as well!
Some more movies I would have mentioned: “Mother !”(2017)
“Ghostland” (2018)
“Hush”(2016)
“Raw”(2016)
“Unsane” (2018)
“Upgrade”(2018)
“Infinity pool”(2023)
“Gretel & Hansel”(2020)
“Malignant” (2021)
Mother!, Unsane and Malignant are the only three from that last that I've seen. mother! is a movie I watched before starting my Letterboxd account so I didn't add it but I will definitely be watching it in the future firstly to watch all of Aronofsky's works but also for a video like this at years end. Malignant and Unsane both barely missed the cut for inclusion. Both films, but especially Unsane felt really promising in the first half but turned me off a bit in the second half.
As for the remaining films, I have add them to the watchlist so thank you very much for the recs!

Infinity Pool 100% even if it's not strictly horror. Also Fresh (2020 I think, super underrated. The Eye's of My Mother wasn't my favorite but would absolutely have a place on this list. Even The Nightingale deserves an honorable mention!

I honestly think It Follows is very overrated. The first half is excellent but it lost me at the swimming pool scene
I will be honest, the swimming pool scene isn't one that I remember fondly but I liked so much from this film that I was able to overlook it.

Midsommar is the love child of a breakup movie and the wicker man …On Shrooms

Have you sped up your voice? It's a bit stressful listening to, sounding choppy etc.
Yes, I've sped it up to 1.3 or 1.35x so if you want to hear it almost exactly the way it would sound at my "natural speed" the playback rate of .75x would achieve this. The candyman reboot was actually awful, it was a social commentary first and actual horror film second. It tries to hit you over the head so hard with its message that it just gets boring.

@@jessicao8517 I would agree more for that sentiment towards Late Night With The Devil as it's lacking just a little and doesn't reach great territory in my mind, though I enjoyed the wife angle.
With Longlegs, I've completely come around on the story and really like it. The twists and turns have made it a film I still like to think about, to the point that I wanted to make an additional video on it.

BRO REALLY COPIED ZEARK 💀💀💀💀
Great video, appreciate your effort, so having said, let´s argue :P the invitation from 2014 is horrible crap, it should not be above It follows
just for clarification, It Follows is the best of 2014 imo and The Invitation is fourth best of 2015. I think that It Follows is markedly better than The Invitation. I will say that I like the psychological aspects of The Invitation and I also thought the ending was well done!

The house that Jack built was poo poo doo doo imo. Shit is 2 hours long, and the build up isn't worth it. Just a weird dude doing weird things.
I can't argue with the weird dude doing weird things. I will admit I am a Von Trier fan and I did enjoy the escalation of the violence as well as the more eccentric scenes such as the old lady's house who he could stop cleaning. I thought it was a bit long myself too and probably would've liked it more if they found a way to shorten it.

Hereditary made me have 2 night terrors in one night it was horrible.. that shit pissed me off , because i screamed very loud like a demon .. fukck
it is a very scary movie that really packs a punch. I remember a lot of people making The Exorcist comparison and it's one of the few that is really deserving of that
2021 is missing Dashcam
Old horror movies just aren't scary.
💀true but there better
@@harambe-ob9hd nope!
There’s no way you think it chapter 2 is better than it chapter 1 I think you’re out of your mind 💀
You aren't wrong about the out of my mind part but I am beginning to learn how hot a take that was from that video. In my all time rankings I have them neck and neck. The beginning of 2 is what really gives it the edge for me but there's a lot to love about 1 that is better in that film. So while I can't say that 2 is notably better than 1 I do ever-so slightly prefer it.

The black phone came out in 2022
Good catch! I had it on the list twice and refrained from adding it to 2022. should have simply checked which year and corrected! I would have put it above X, then The Menu, and then Black Phone if you are wondering

love how this is a carbon copy of Zearks video 💀💀
Beau is Afraid is underrated, check it out
I have actually watched this and think it is great! I was kind of on the fence as to whether or not to include this in my horror ranking just because of it's different style and let Letterboxd decide which only classifies it as Fantasy/Comedy/Adventure though I will have to re-evaluate that when I remake this list at year end
Saw is definitely the most lofty
You talk very fast. Slow it down just a little. Also try making your channel name one word. Might look better
Might not be a bad idea! I'll think about potentially changing the name. I also increased the clip speed for this video so that is definitely adding to why it sounds so fast. In my latest video's I've not done this but then I'm getting comments about how long the pauses are between words so I gotta try and find a happy medium. So my favorite horror movies all came out in 2014? Ok
