The reason the parents don't age as quickly as the kids is basically because kids Do age much more quickly than adults. From 10 to 20 you change a *LOT.* From 30 to 40, it's nowhere near as as noticeable.

I didn't love the movie, but I liked it well enough... and I totally agree with most of your criticisms. That classic stilted Shyamanlan dialogue wasn't quite Happening level bad, but still wasn't great.

1: I knew you were gonna hate this just by the face you made in the thumbnail and, from what I'm hearing, justifiably so.

I remember when I saw this with my best friend in theaters. They were literally crying emotionally at the death of the parents in the movie and I was thinking "really?" Because this movie was written terribly. And it was weird because when we saw Wolfwalkers (which became a recent favorite of mine), they didn't shed a tear which was better written and emotional movie.

I agree with your assessment, man. I got a screener for it, and so I'm glad I didn't waste my money...but the theater was downtown, so that's 3-1/2 hours of my life I'll never get back. I am always apprehensive of Shyamalan, because I have been burned by him WAY too much. I liked or loved Split, The Visit, Signs, Unbreakable, and The Sixth Sense. I even appreciate SOME OF The Village. Believe me when I say that this is far from his worst, and I thought that the teenage daughter and son characters did the best with the material they were given, but the dialogue and delivery was so awkward that everyone in my audience (including me) were laughing too often at unintentionally funny scenes/moments. No pun intended, but the concept got real old real fast in that last hour, as more and more people died. But the surgery and pregnancy scenes, as well as the cave scene, were pretty well-done body horror. The Dominican Republic locale was beautiful, too, but that's about all the good I have for this depressing and disturbing waste of time. Claustrophobic thrillers like Alien and Jaws clearly inspired this concept, but those were FAR superior. And I predicted the twist, more or less, at the beginning of the movie, and was about 80% right, sadly.

I... just plain don't agree with you on many points... They did age up the characters physically. It wasn't going to be like they were 80 immediately. It was subtle at first. That's realistic.
And as for the kids aging up mentally, they specified their emotions and minds were changing too. And having the baby 100% affected them... The boy was crying and talking about marrying the mother of his child, being the man of the family, and never divorcing her like his parents were considering doing. That part really resonated with me as a child of divorce. And the girl was so affected by the death of her son that she walked around cradling his bones until the boy made her put him down. He was despondent after her death when she fell from the rocks. What else were you looking for exactly?

I honestly haven't fully enjoyed an M. Night film since Unbreakable. With that said, I really dug Old. It has all of Night's trademark problems, but they worked for me this time to create a fun weird tone. It's more intentionally funny than most seem to feel. I didn't expect much and was pretty entertained.

Phew...unfortunately I figured this film would be dead on arrival. At least for how I felt about it, I was right. Like many, my relationship with Shyamalan is rocky at the best of times. I watch films like Unbreakable/Split/Glass and the Sixth Sense - which were incredible movies - and I think he may have a shot at redemption. But then I watch stuff like Old, and I even remotely hear about The Last Airbender (still never seen it, and I don't ever plan to) and I think to myself, "who keeps letting this dude make movies?!".
And you hit the nail on the head beautifully. All these years I've been trying to put his style of filmmaking into words and you did it: the dude should be making episodes of something, and not full-length motion pictures. His style and concepts would be vastly more suited to 30-minute episodes of Twilight Zone/Outer Limits/Tales From The Dark Side/etc.

I watched this movie for the first time last night. The only “take away” I got was possibly a message to spend time with ur family esp ur kids as much as u can cause a blink of an eye, they will be older. Sure. However, I don’t think that’s the point he was trying to drive. I literally fell asleep half way in and had to force myself to stay awake. I hate that I have to rewatch bc I missed the ending but I don’t think I’m missing much. Having said that, the reason why the scene with the two kids is so confusing is bc they are “apparently” aging but still have 6 year old mentality…so then why wld they be intimate with eachother? 6 year olds don’t think to experiment in this way so thats why that scene made no sense to me and unnecessary. That’s just one example of the concept not very well thought out. If someone has an explanation for that I’d be interested to hear it cause I missed the ending I just couldn’t keep my eyes open. Pls don’t make me have to rewatch lol

It was the logistics for me. The concept was very interesting and I like the overall meaning that we should be more appreciative of the time we get when alive, but there were so many loop holes that just left me scratching my head! First of all: If one can never leave that beach, how did they get the resources from it to make the medications?
Second of All: As Cody mentioned, how is it that the kids aged so fast yet the adults stayed basically adults, meanwhile the old lady died short after arriving on the beach. Third of all: How did these people get to even find out about this beach if one can NEVER leave said beach. The list goes on, but they're not worth mentioning. Everyone, just skip this movie lol

  • @channel.surfer
    @channel.surfer 8 месяцев назад

    - rust entering the bloodstream is not a heal-able wound the way surgery is.
    - kids naturally age more rapidly than adults: someone going from 5-15 is a huge leap compared to someone going from 35-45.
    - the adults do observably age accordingly scene by scene. nobody looks "fuckin 30" by the time they pass.
    - the two children who lose their newborn absolutely suffer the psychological ramifications: in a fit of madness, the girl climbs an impossible cliff then falls to her death, and while the boy suffers nervous breakdowns, he at least has his entire family there to help him cope, as clearly depicted.
    - every character is absolutely exhibiting an obvious and specific form of trauma in every scene, this film could literally be an allegory for just trauma alone if it wanted.
    - "Click" and "Old" share zero ties other than the cosmetic connection of "Fast Forward Time" they generally share, comparing these two films like perfectly highlights your unjustifiable misunderstanding(s) of this movie.

The graphic novel is maybe 70 pages and only encapsulates all of the beach scenes. Everything else was made for the movie. It's funny that the original story is a graphic novel because it is a GRAPHIC novel. I really liked this movie when I saw it in the theatre because I really like the concept. Whenever it comes out online to watch, I'll watch it again and see if my opinion changes.
The kid giving birth thing was in the book. But the baby didn't die. It aged like any other baby to toddler to kid. I know they had to make it more interesting for the movie, but I think keeping the baby alive would've been more interesting than it dying and the girl carrying around a blanket of bones.

  • @pabulum28

I agree with you totally here; the end of the film was like the end of LOTR Return Of The Effing King when it came to Cripes Is This The Real End Yet (and usually I don't consider points at which a film could have ended sooner, but here it was like unavoidable), and the main boy/man was insufferable to the point that he made the rapping main kid from The Visit endearing.
"Lead by actions, Mom." --A line from the main kid in the first few minutes of Old which makes you want to punch his head off
I understand that maybe that was some kind of thing like the kid is wise beyond his years or some shit so it's consistent with the ages-being-off motif of the film, but it still didn't remove the fact that it made him annoying as all eff.
Also, and SPOILERS sort of here
The ending was too Scooby Doo and might have been more entertaining if it ended a little more sinisterly.

Not as good as 6th Sense and his earlier films but I still enjoyed it. There's hardly anyone I know acting in this movie accept for the director Shamylan himself who makes an appearance just like he does in some of his previous films and Ken Leung is one of the guys who get killed off. If u don't remember who he is he played the main villian with the yellow hair in the first Rush Hour film.

Was hoping that M. Night Shyamalan would make a comeback this time around, but man all these negative reviews aren't promising. Might skip this one, as it wasn't really appealing to me in the first place. Great review!

I'd say it probably will be divisive,
I had a few criticisms of your criticisms
And a few things that maybe just come down to different tastes?
But I can accept ya didn't like it
I may come back to this and kinda give my "rebuttals" but I'm heading out for the evenin xP
But I absolutely loved it, had me balling near the end haha
So if it's kinda hot or cold people love or hate it, I loved it heh
    9 or 9.5/10

    Your T-shirt is amazing.
I realy enjoyed the movie, but I agree with your criticisms. But I loved the frenetic pacing, it was supposed to be life sped up super fast, so the pacing mirrored that, it made logical sense to me. The movie was batshit for like 80 minutes straight. That was super entertaining for me. No time to dwell. I also thought it was pretty funny in the right spots; it gets that it's a batshit premise and injects laughs throughout. Midsize Sedan is the funniest rapper name I've heard in years.

I think that for me as a person who disliked split and glass this was better, not great but an improvement on the delivery of a concept in part. The twist made my eyes roll the least of the last 3

If Old wanted to tell a story about how life is precious, than don’t set characters on a desert island and their dying fast. Stranded on a island and aging fast is a recipe is a action survival movie like Predetors.

Wow, wasnt expecting a negative review for this one. I understand where you're coming from and I think some of your points were valid and I felt the same way but they didnt drop the film down to 1 star.
As a slasher fan, I'm sure you're well aware that most of the films have characters that serve no purpose to the story, and are only there to be killed off.... but I dont here you dropping those films to 1 star.
I dont think the acting was nearly as bad as you're making it out to be, I think the actors did show emotion, and I think the damage and trauma of what the kids and even the parents experienced was shown.
The film wasnt about pacing or climax or anything like that... the movie itself played out the way the script and story was told... in a fast pace, rapid method, which is a reflection of the story of losing time, the pace matched the theme of the story.
Not every movie has to be made the same way, with the best pacing and climatic structure. Shoot, Quentin Tarantino did thinks completely different with Pulp Fiction in the structure of that film... but I dont here you criticizing him for it.
Overall I think it was a good film, the story has a message and that counts for something for me, more than one star at least. I do see the flaws, some you mentioned but none of them were so bad that they made this a one star film. I respect your opinion and review on this one, I would just strongly disagree. I gave it 3 stars.

I'm kind of up and down on MKS. Like most directors he has movies I like and movies I don't. I wasn't really big on The Visit, to be honest. And I did like Glass and Split. This movie however didn't even interest me in the trailer. I mean, if the trailer does literally nothing to even remotely interest you in the movie then how good is the movie itself going to be? I'll probably rent it at some point if i get around to it but I'm not going to see it in the theater.
Lady In The Water is actually pretty good if I remember correctly. But I haven't seen it in years. It's more of a drama than anything but pretty good. I never really saw him as a horror director. I don't consider movies like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable as HORROR movies. Just dramatic thrillers with a slight supernatural edge. Wide Awake, Avatar, Glass, Lady In The Water, The Happening, After Earth, etc are not really horror. Not to me anyway. Wide Awake isn't even close to horror as it is simply a family drama.

I just finished watching this movie and i gotta say it isn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen but definitely is not the best. I’d never really heard of this director so going into it, I didn’t have any expectations. I personally think the one thing I could say to sum up this movie would be that it was a potentially great concept but was executed pretty poorly. I think that the concept of the movie that he created could’ve turned out to be amazing and he could’ve created a much better movie than he did. I just think it didn’t have the best dialogue and honestly, I’m not sure if this was because of the dialogue, the acting didn’t seem great either. I’m not at all saying that only well known actors/actresses are good at acting, but some of the actors/actresses in this movie could’ve done better. This also could totally have been the dialogue’s fault so no one get mad at me. There was something off about the movie the whole time and I can’t think of what it was. It’s on the tip of my tongue but I am just really not sure right now. I also think there were a couple holes in the plot and the ending could’ve turned out wayyyy better. I wish he had set it up in a way where the end would be a huge twist because my favorite is when i leave a movie theater going holy shit and being in total shock after watching a movie twist ending. This movie, while it did have a unique and interesting ending, didn’t leave me in awe, but rather had me a little confused and let down. Once again, I wish he had set it up where it would’ve been more of a shock to viewers instead of just an explanation. I’m gonna stop now or else I’ll just keep going forever, but overall, it wasn’t a terrible movie so I’d probably give it a 6/10. The storyline was sort of there and it was a good concept for a movie but it would have been perfect if he had just executed it better :)

I'm mostly positive on M Night, I mean I like most of the ones most people like and hate the one's most hate. However, I also liked Glass and thought the Visit was alright besides those I only really hated and didn't like After Earth Air Bender and Happening even though I like happening as a comedy. So I think I'm about the same as most people with M Night I would say I enjoy most of his stuff except the ones most people find bad. As for this one it's getting mixed reactions to me, the movie doesn't so much look terrible just more meh to OK time waster. However I haven't seen it, yet maybe it's terrible lol either way can't wait for more crazy M Night.

Yeah, he M night lost me for good with Glass. I liked split and the visit, but Glass just had a stupid premise, like we already know they have powers, there were 2 movies about. Such a waste. I'll be skipping this one too. Thanks for the heads up.
