I’m with you on Scream VI. I was fully convinced it’d be in my top 3 Scream movies until those last 20 minutes or so. Not that they’re particularly grounded movies (aside from the first) as the franchise went on, but it just got SO goofy in a way that was jarring as hell. It dove headfirst into campy territory and it didn’t fit.

    Top 5 Biggest Disappointments:
    5. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania-Despite this movie not really having much to do the overall MCU anymore, for the introduction of Kang the Conqueror, I found this movie to be pretty disappointing
    4. The Creator-To be very clear, I’m positive on this film, but for how much it was being hyped up for being an original sci-fi epic, this movie certainly let me down as it was essentially a bunch of elements of previous sci-fi projects thrown together to make The Creator
    3. Napoleon-On technical levels, this is a well made movie, which made for a decent movie but when it came to the story, characters, and themes, there wasn’t an actual exploration of who Napoleon Bonaparte was, which was rather disappointing
    2. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny-While it’s a good enough closure to the Indiana Jones franchise and character, it lacks the classic movie making of what makes the original trilogy special, and takes Indy to emotional places I think I could’ve done without
    1. The Flash-Despite enjoying this movie both times I watched it in theaters, this movie has aged rather poorly for me because of how it executes multiple of its ideas, its terrible CGI, the way the story plays out, and especially how hollow Barry’s journey is by the time the movie wraps up
    Top 6 Biggest Surprises:
    6. Air-Because I don’t care about sports or shoes whatsoever, I was expecting this movie to be solid, but now one that would stick with me much, but I love this movie and it’s easily one of my favorites of the year
    5. John Wick: Chapter 4-Because I wasn’t the biggest fan of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, I wasn’t super hyped for this one, but that definitely changed once I saw the awesomeness of this film
    4. Oppenheimer-Because I wasn’t interested in the subject matter of this film at first, I thought this would’ve been a film I would’ve respected more than I enjoyed, but this one ended up in my Top 3 Favorites of 2023
    3. BlackBerry-An exploration of human relationships and the fear of being irrelevant, and while I never would’ve thought of that, that’s so much of the magic of movies
    2. Godzilla Minus One-I wasn’t really planning on seeing this one in theaters, but when I saw it as soon as the early buzz came out, I went to see it that night, and though it was pretty great
    1. Saw X-I wouldn’t have ever thought that the tenth film in a nineteen year old horror franchise would be my favorite film in that franchise, my favorite horror film of 2023, my biggest surprise of 2023, or a spot in my Top 10 Movies of 2023, but that’s what happened

@@sirdropbeartvI actually enjoyed in this one more than just one or two segments for a change which is refreshing for this series and I loved how it actually felt like you were watching a vhs tape with the ratio and the 80s setting was nice. In these V/H/S films they will usually have either one or two good segments but bad wrap arounds. 85’s wrap around actually felt enjoyable especially considering since it was done by the guy who did the Amateur Night short and the HELLRAISER reboot, I loved how the wrap around felt different and the alien reveal really freaked me out. The other segments that stand out are No Wake/Ambrosia combined and God Of Death and easily the BEST one of the film was no doubt Scott Derrickson’s segment. ONLY segment I hated was TKNOGD in this film. If I had to say my favourite V/H/S films, it’s 85 and 2

The older scream movies felt more realistic. Chad got stabbed like 20 times in the 5th one and the 6th one and still survived while people in the original scream got stabbed like one time and were already falling to the floor because of the pain. The realism of these movies is what separated itself from other horror movies in the genre. Now these movies are becoming exactly what the original movies parodied.

But, despite having problems with the third act when I first watched Scream 5, I don't mind it anymore. In fact, now knowing that that can be the last appearence of Sidney Prescott in the series, I value that third act and the its ending (and also her ending in that movie) even more. Alas, seeing Sidney and Gale team up against the killers from the moment they leave the hospital until the very end is priceless, considering how much they passed through and their conplicated relashionship throughout the years

The opening is one of the best and most creative openings in the franchise. I like some of what they do with the NYC setting.
Things I didn't like, the killers motivation, the obvious plot holes, the this trend sequels have of resetting the character development from the previous film.
I hate how most Scream films end with Gale learning to be a more selfless, thoughtful person, and then the next film starts with her as this cutthroat, I don't care about anything but notoriety personality all over again. Im with you on Scream VI except on one thing. You actually enjoyed it longer than I did. I was loving it until Gale survived. I audibly groaned when the emt announced that she had a pulse. Right then I knew it was going to be a hollow experience the rest of the way. I still like it overall but my ranking of it tanked after that scene. Scream is my favorite horror franchise too

Didn’t see Cobweb but saw all the other surprises…And I agree 100% (I walked into Gran Turismo even colder than you did because it was a Regal Mystery Monday movie..but like A MONTH early! And it was Awesome!)…and, it’s probably heresy to say this, but I LOVED Dungeons and Dragons so much I’d say it compares favorably to THE PRINCESS BRIDE!

    My most disappointing movies:-
*Napoleon - Great star, and great director. A phoned in performance, and extremely boring repetitive movie.
*Scream VI - Horrible writing. Plot holes galore, and characters that just won't die.
*Insidious The Red Door - Not scary and boring. A letdown after some great previous movies.
*Indiana Jones & The Dial Of Destiny - Indy over the hill, and a GCI fest.
    Most surprising:-
*Fast X - I hated 8 and 9. This was way better than them, and good dumb fun.
*Saw X - A return to form. One of the best in the franchise.
*Bring Him To Me - A gripping low budget Australian filmed crime drama.A great cast, with a star turn by Barry Pepper.
*Gran Turismo - Didn't expect much. But one of the best fun movies of the year.

    My list of most surprising.
Well Cobweb - Definitely a great surprise. A very simple premise but very effective. You have to hand it to this movie for using the the most limited plot to deliver such an engaging movie.
Ruby Gillman - An animated movie that shows that if you get the right idea then animated movies are still the best feel good family movies.
The Locksmith - Very old school but definitely a good Indie.
MI Dead Reckoning - Yes I thought this was a franchise which will definitely be out of ideas like the Fast and Furious but MI Dead Reckoning really brought a good and relevant plot into its franchise with an interesting set up and characters. Plus the really well executed action scenes show that action is still a genre that can give block busters if you have the right mix of drama and action.

9/10 times I agree with your takes but Insidious The Red Door was my favorite in the franchise by far and I was very fond of it. Think it had something to do with my son being born not too long before I watched it and the themes of communication and fatherhood that hit me different at the time, but gotta give this man Patrick Wilson his flowers for his Directorial Debut and a very solid performance.

Sorry, but I'm one of the people who didn't like Cobweb. The "twist" was a bait and switch. And I felt like an average Dad telling "spooky stories" to some kids around a campfire could have come up with the script.

Regarding the Godzilla movie : Yes that was the original intent of the movie that first came out. It was supposed to represent the horrors of nuclear bombs, their testing the fall outs etc. A lot of the audience though loved the godzila since they could relate to it (see WW2 hisotry date of release and situation in Japan) so it spwaned the cult of movies that fallowed.

My biggest surprise is a movie called Supercell, a tornado movie with Skeet Ulrich and Anne Heche. It doesn't have the best reviews but I actually really enjoyed it!
The biggest disappointment is Antman and the Wasp Quantumania. I really enjoyed the first two but I was very underwhelmed by this one. It's now my least favorite Marvel movie, which is the really disappointing part

  • @BloodeeJacob

We personally disagree on Scream 6 a bit. I agree the killer reveals and both performances were hammy as hell. For me though it was still very entertaining otherwise to where it’s prob dl y one of the two or three best sequels.
We disagree heavier on Indiana Jones lol Ford was great performance wise (the scene where he’s talking about his regret over Mutt actually made me tear up), it still had a classic sense of adventure, Bridge’s character was not too unbearable for me and they both saved each other anyway. I also thought the ending was creative and very emotionally resonate, I’m glad that’s the ending now.
To each their own tho , I’m glad you liked Minus One so much!

Have to say, I thought Scream 6 was pretty good. Not the best of the franchise but not the worst (lookin at you part 3).
It had some good ideas and executed them very well. There may have been some stretching the boundaries of believability a bit sometimes but, honestly, if you really look at every one of the films in the series, that is a feature, not a fault.
