Me and my husband also got married in September and spent our Honeymoon watching One Piece as well. Neither one of us had seen any of the anime or read the manga, but we were enthralled. Also, our honeymoon was to Japan, so we were surrounded by tons of One Piece advertisements. I loved that we weren't the only nerdy couple on our honeymoon watching this show.

i just cant get past the first 2 episodes. all characters feel extremely flat, with extremely flat motivations. it feels as if i am supposed to care for them, without being shown WHY i should care. its just 'this character is xyz this cjaracters is abc" and i cant get past it. which is a bummer! i adored arcane and saw many arcane fans praising BES. I truly believe Succession Season 4 is one of the best pieces of television period. It’s so interesting how a show that’s basically about business people fight over who gets to sit in the big chair could be so engaging and gut punching. I watched Blue Eye Samurai in one sitting and I regret nothing. This show is INSANE and i was waiting for it to be on the list because the way the story flows and grows around Mizu is incredible. I hope they can keep the story as strong as it is now with the next season because they have a gem on their hands and it should not be wasted.
I also hope they give Akemi a stronger arc next season. there was nothing wrong with it in S1, and I like her, but it just felt almost too normal compared to the other leads.

    • @avezilt6172

also just binged the whole show yesterday! while I also share your ambition to see a greater arc for Akemi in season 2 she grew on me so much during this season alone. yes her stakes are more “normal” than Mizu’s, but once you stop to think of her actual influence in the plot and personal growth… she just is the second most important lead character. her story went soo many wild places, and will only get crazier next season while I’m sure we will only grow more fond of her. this show goes so hard on every level, I can’t wait for season 2

Good Omens s2 was absolutely my favourite season of tv I watched this year, David Tennant and Michael Sheen continued to be absolutely perfect in their roles, their chemistry is impeccable, and the relationship between the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley is one of the best nuanced and complex dynamics I’ve ever seen. The humour keeps the perfect balance of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s styles that made the book so iconic originally, and the production design especially in the many historical flashbacks was incredibly impressive. I don’t know if I’ve ever been as excited for something as I am for season 3, I genuinely think it’s shaping up to be one of the best seasons of tv of all time.

20:14, One of my favorite aspects of Loki specifically was how it used the concept of the multiverse to circumvent the usual bootstrap/grandfather paradox approach to time travel while also being able to play it straight when Loki gains the ability to manipulate time by interacting with his past, in essence making him a true god rather than a god in title only like the Asgardians and other “god” aliens in this franchise.
It also used the multiverse format to make versions of every character (or variants) and their experiences unique enough to be considered their own person, from this variant of Loki to Victor Timely (a version of Kang who is just a simple inventor in the 1800’s and isn’t destined to become a conqueror like the others), which made what happened to these characters matter.

I just wanted to mention Vinland Saga Season 2 that came out early this year. I won't stop talking about this show because it deserves to be more popular than it is and I truly believe those who haven't watched it yet are missing out. For those who don't know, Vinland Saga is an anime that came out 3 or 4 years ago. Its season one was huge success, it's a story about Vikings, war and how that affects people, particularly our main protagonist, a 6 year old boy named Thorfinn, son of the greatest Warrior of that time. Thorfinn wasted more than ten years of his life living among Vikings accomplishing nothing but killing people. Season one was fun, had a lot of action, had some deep episodes. This show doesn't mind talking about deep topics of religion, and after season one ended, the real story began. Season 2 made a HUGE risk, literally making a 180° shift of the story and what we were used to, it went from being full of Viking action, to being a deep character focus drama from our protagonist and how he's been traumatized by all the wars and deaths. And because of that, some people decided to stop watching since it got "boring", those who understood the meaning behind it and stayed (like me) by the end, everyone was calling it a masterpiece. The topics, the character development, the strong philosophical conversations, the tragedy, the love, the INSPIRATION that comes out of this show is something I've never experienced before. It's the first time I've felt like crying out of the beauty of a scene. Give this show a chance, and let's talk after you finish season 2. Each season is 24 episodes, 23 mins duration (including openings/endings), 48 episodes so far (season 3 is coming). You can binge watch it in less than a week, you won't regret it.

Man, I only got through season one with the promise that season two will be much more compelling for me. And OH BOY did it not disappoint. It's so good. SO good. The depth, the psychology, the political and moral conundrums, the exploration of guilt and purpose... The ANIMATION?! Stunning. I'd give season 1 like 6/10 (the last two episodes, though, would get like at least 8/10), most of the time it was good but not quite for me, overall didn't stand out too much next to other anime I've seen, it didn't seem that new or special, even visually it looked very "normal". But it's 100% necessary, it sets up everything in season 2 flawlessly. And season 2 is a solid 9/10 for me. Awesome show.

I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation during the finale of Succession. I genuinely had no idea how it would end, especially after THAT death earlier on. We spent four seasons watching a group of dysfunctional siblings battle vie for control of the company, and the conclusion is bittersweet. The Roy siblings are estranged from each other, with Shiv being in the same position as Caroline, married to a Waystar CEO pregnant with a child that she's not sure that she really wants, Roman goes back to hanging out in bars, but is traumatised from the ordeal, and Kendall is left alone, contemplating his losses.

I can't imagine the ending being tied up in only an episode or two if my original theory had happened.

Great list. I 100% agree with putting Blue eye Samurai on the list. I have been obsessed with that show since it came out.
Another show from this year that more people need to check out is Pantheon. Its an excellent animated series focused on the sci-fi concept of UI, uploaded intelligence, people downloading their mind into computers. S2 dropped this year and it was arguably even better than s1. Deep philosophical discussions, creative action, interesting sci fi concepts, engaging plot with a number of twists. This show has everything. Barely anyone has seen it and that is such a shame. Was originally on Amc+ but now is on Amazon in Australia/New Zealand. This show was done dirty, with basically no advertising and now you can only watch it legally in Australia/New Zealand. More people need to see it. Its one of the best stories I have ever experienced, period. Most people who are aware of its existence only know about s1 since Amc+ canceled it before releasing s2 even though s2 was already done. We are lucky Amazon picked it up and released s2 to the public but I wish it was legally available everywhere. No idea why they are trying to bury such an amazing show.

Undead Murder Farce - supernatural murder mystery following an immortal head in a birdcage, her loyal maid, and a half-demon full-himbo guard as they travel from Japan to Europe during the late 1800s to try to track down the mad scientist who ruined their lives. Gets heavy but is also absolutely hilarious
Castlevania Nocturne: if you loved the OG series you’ll fuck with this one. Able to stand on its own and bring something new to the franchise. Ending had me SCREAMING and scared the shit out of my cats
Frieren: Beyond Journeys End: best fantasy I’ve seen in years that has made me want to return to the genre. Slow building but in the best Tolkien-esk kind of way. When it goes hard tho it goes HARD. Will 100% make you feel things but in all the best way
The Glory: the best revenge series I have ever seen following a girl whose life was violently ruined by a group of her classmates. She spends the next 18 years planning their demise and the results are breathtaking. THE MOST satisfying shit I’ve ever seen. Heads up tho, first episode is very hard to watch cuz the bullying inflicted on her is inhumane at best and absolutely barbaric at worst

But seriously, when i put on the first episode, i was like, "This can be the next arcane," so I'm glad you're putting this show to the front, it needs to be waaaay more popular than it is now! Oh et bonne année! 🎉

I'm glad netflix is branching out into animation and other streaming services too.
Blue eye samurai, Scavengers reign, Arcane, Love death and robots and even Carol and the end of the world( which came out super late in the year ) are great examples of the world of posibilities animation offers.
    Long live animation!

Is Scavengers Reign on Netflix in your country? I thought it was a Max original. (I mean, it isn't on any of these streaming platforms in my country lol, which is a massive bummer because the show is a masterpiece..)
Edit: Oh I guess I misunderstood your comment!

I would have out Vinland Saga S2 in my list as well, it's so different from S1, but such a great instrospection and exploration of Thorfinn

Season 1 was like a 6-7/10 for me (final 2 episodes were amazing, though). Good, but not too special. Season 2, though, is a solid 9/10, it's so damn good in every way.

I'm so happy you have One Piece on your list! I haven't watched a lot of series this year because of time and life.. but as a long time OP fan, I just had to watch that one! Thanks to anyone involved to bring this series to life action and succeeding what others tried and failed miserably!

Watching this I was in agreement with a lot of picks and writing down those few I hadn't seen. I also binged the entirety of succession for the first time this year, and watched the last episode 2 days ago on christmas. I was really curious as to the #1 slot... only for it to be the show I absolutely gobbled up in one night, and then urged everyone I know that I thought would be interested to go watch it immediately. Great list.

I just finished watching the Blue eye samurai yesterday, and I had no doubt which series you were going to put as first. It definitely deserves the top spot.

The first 3-4 episodes of Loki season 2 had me doubting, but 5-6 had my thinking it’s top 5 marvel projects. The Bear was just peak.

Thank you! Added some of the anime to my list (which I don't normally watch). I was amused to see Silo on the list as, 1) I read the book and loved it, 2) I had no idea it was made into a show (I don't get Apple+ yet), and 3) the visuals you showed looked like they were ripped right out of the book!
    My recommendation: Bodies.

Hell yeah! Blue Eye Samurai was a very pleasant surprise for me, glad to see it's been pretty popular. Kind of expected it to fly under the radar.
Another (animated) show I have to mention because I just watched it recently is... Pantheon. I haven't watched any "legacy" network/cable TV for years so I had no idea Pantheon existed until like 2 weeks ago, but I love it. Maybe not as profoundly brilliant as Pluto, or as mind-bending as Scavengers Reign, but it's really good. AMC killed it for a tax write-off, but Amazon picked it up for the 2nd season. Definitely recommend checking it out.

My favorite title of the year was by far I know your soul and I'm honestly both schocked and saddened by the fact that it rarely gets mentioned on any of the best of the year lists (probably because a lot of people have a strange aversion towards non-English language programming, which, honestly, baffles me to no end). The casting was phenomenal, I geniunely don't remember seeing a show that had this good of a cast for a good long while. The visuals were gorgeous and really managed to strike up a perfect balance between being grounded and cinematic. The writing was grounded, as well as exceptionally smart. It was full of unpredictable twists and made me binge all 6 episodes in just a few days. Anyone who hasn't seen it should give it a watch.

I wish Lockwood & Co had had more appreciation. I love the books, and the show was handled with so much care. I'm so mad Netflix canceled. We needed a second season. The rest of the books deserve to be put on screen too.

YESSSS I'm so glad Loki season 2 gets a mention because it's genuinely one of the best seasons of TV I've seen in ages. The cinematography, story beats, and character moments genuinely blew me away in every episode - I do hope that they allow more Marvel works to be more like Loki s2, not to say that I want them to be a copy-paste, but allowing writers and storytellers to do what they do best and create some awesome shows.
Also I've heard nothing but incredible things about Pluto and Blue Eyed Samurai - I just wish Netflix had given Pluto the love it deserved.
Also, Apple TV sounds like early HBO in that it's a place for genuine bangers of tv shows - I just hope it doesn't go the way of modern HBO, which of course still has some bangers, but is certainly going through a Phase, so to speak.

The way I held my breath before you named your number one pick, hoping, just HOPING you’d watched Blue Eye Samurai. My god, this show might be my favorite piece of media I’ve consumed in the last 3-5 years. I started episode 1 at 9 pm on a Sunday night, with absolutely no knowledge (no trailers, nothing) and was up until 5 am, eyes GLUED to the screen, watching the whole thing in a single sitting.

I don't know if it counts because the first episode was 30 December 2022 but The Glory on Netflix was SO GOOD! The actors played their roles so well, the story was a rollercoaster, I wished peoples deaths and settled for less knowing I was still getting a good deal. It's a Kdrama I wish people would watch.

Hi FSN, I'm a new subscriber (4 days ago actually) and immediately I subscribed. Wicked sense of humor which is the best kind. I haven't binged a series in over a year (kind of had to stop when my family reported me missing)so when I saw your best of shows for 23 I thought I would start off with those. I'm on the 1st season of Pluto and bullseye. It's soooo good. You my man are on my go to list of reviewers. For now. Good channel.

I recommend Patriot to everyone, every chance I get. It's a spy caper, I guess, that's about love and music and despair, where the lead character is a secret agent of some kind who writes much too specific folk songs to deal with his experiences. It's incredibly funny and horrifying and sad and you get songs with lines like "You wouldn't kill his brother for doing that, unless you had extenuating circumstances that allowed you to justify that somehow. Like you didn't really work where people think you work, for an industrial piping and engineering firm..."
