So sad Suzume dint make the list and also super surprised Godzilla minus 1 is that low, however this was my first full time year watching you Dan and honestly it’s been a huge breath of fresh air finding your channel, there’s hardly anyone making good movie content out there anymore, most film content on RUclips is made to anger you and tell you why the film industry is ruined and what not, so seeing you being very genuine of both the positive and negative issues is something I really really enjoy, cheers to another year Dan
The criticism of Poor Things makes sense but at the same time, the film is very fable/fairy tale like, so for me I don't take it as literally as others do.
My top 10: 1. Across The Spiderverse 2. When Evil Lurks 3. The Holdovers 4. Air 5. Blackberry 6. Oppenheimer 7. Dungeons and Dragons 8. Are You There God? It’s me Margaret. 9. Godzilla Minus One 10. Bottoms
Love you Dan! Been a fan since screen junkies- I was in sixth grade then, now I'm a screenwriting major at a film school! You guys did so much to fuel my passion for film, I miss it like crazy. Glad you're still doing stuff!
I'm so happy he's finally coming back after Solo! He was totally thrown under the bus on it when he was one of the best parts...he just didn't have anything to work with.
@@Keykatriz Fair Play, one of this year's most underrated movie had a career best performance from him. And it was one of biggest deal that Netflix had in buying the rights from any film festival this year. I recommend you check that out
Shout out to Dan for starting his Top 10 with Honourable Mentions, most Top 10 lists save them for just before number 1, which really doesn't make a lot of sense
They do it that way so that you don't know what is on the top ten. If you list honorable mentions first, you now know a bunch of movies that didn't make his top ten, but maybe you thought they should have been.
I have a similar list but my top film of the year is The Iron Claw. I was really shocked by how good that film was and how good Zac Efron was in it. My wife and I actually cried in the film. Not just a tear or two I'm talking cried like a baby and I have really never had a movie effect me quite like it did in a long time.
Dan, thank you for consistently providing quality content throughout the year. You are easily one of my favorite content creators, congratulations to you and Mara and I hope your New Years is fun and safe, man 👍🏻 thank you for
My top 10 of the year: 10. Polite Society 9. The Holdovers 8. The Boy and The Heron 7. Bottoms 6. Suzume 5. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 4. Killers of the Flower Moon 3. Oppenheimer 2. Godzilla Minus One 1. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Ayo Edebiri not being even mentioned for Actor MVP for the year is a borderline crime Dan. Theater Camp, The Bear, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bottoms. Everything she touched this year was gold.
I love everything you said about Oppenheimer which is why it’s my Number 1 too for 2023. And now one of my favourite films of all time. It was a cinematic experience I’ll never forget. Hope it wins everything this awards season🏆
Alden Ehrenreich stole my heart in Hail, Caesar! I really thought he had a shot at being a big star. Disney did him dirty with everything that happened on Solo. I'm glad that he's finally breaking through in solid supporting roles. I hope he keeps that momentum going.
Great list Dan! For MVP actors that had a versatile body of work in 2023, I'd also give a shoutout to Colman Domingo for The Color Purple, Rustin, Sing Sing (premiered at TIFF)
My Top 11 (Includes Die Hard) 1. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part One 2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 3. John Wick: Chapter 4 4. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 5. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 6. Die Hard 7. The Holdovers 8. Past Lives 9. The Outlaw Johnny Black 10. Poor Things 11. Godzilla Minus One
This is a tremendously well-put-together video Dan, exactly the sort of content that made me subscribe in the first place. I strongly hope that you don't skimp on the effort once you reach around 942k subscribers!
You’re not alone on Creator island, Dan. It’s easily the best sci-fi movie this year and hopefully we get to see Gareth Edwards build more incredible and unique worlds in the future. Thanks for all the great content this year, Dan! Happy New Year to you and Mara! 🥳🎉
Saw it by myself and loved it, was able to convince my family to go and see it and all of them loved it too. I think it just didn't get the marketing it needed. So far nobody I know that saw it has said they didnt' like it. It just lacked the hype to succeed at the Box office sadly.
It wasn't long enough as there was quick flashback edits. It gets the same criticism as Bade Runner did when it was released. Modern classic. Guaranteed.
My top 10 favorite movies 1) Dungeons & Dragons 2) Barbie 3) Joy Ride 4) Ninja Turtles 5) Oppenheimer 6) Wonka 7) A Million Miles Away 8) The Marvels 9) Godzilla Minus One 10) Radical

I wish I could've put The Creator in my list but storyproblems hang me on that. But if you ask me, did I enjoy The Creator? Absolutely, will I watch it again maybe in the future? Absolutely
I think my top 10 best goes like this: 10) creed 3 9) equaliser 3 8) Sisu 7) evil dead rise 6) Spider-Man across the spiderverse 5) killers of the flower moon 4) Godzilla minus one 3) Oppenheimer 2) John wick chapter 4 1) Mission impossible dead reckoning part 1

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One 8. The Creator 9. Scream VI 10. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 11. Killers of the Flower Moon Worst: 5. Napoleon 4. Meg 2: The Trench 3. was working on my list of movies of 2023 that i liked. 🤣we had drastically different movies in the top 10 department I hadn't even heard of Zone of Interest or Anatomy of a Fall. The fall one doesn't really interest me from what you describe, but the Zone of Interest one sounds kind of like something I might want to see once. I was considering Poor Things, but I just wasn't in a good mood to see it. Hopefully it hits a streaming service i have soon, I kind of want to see it. for the way I went about for my top 10s and runners up, was mostly how that movie made me feel. did i have a good roller coaster ride watching it, did I not have to do a rewrite alternate take in my head of the movie or have double check on my feelings of the movie with one of my go to reviewers. And did i just feel like Keanu Reaves going woah and had some time to think on the movie after i watched it and felt good. Also to be fair, your job is to see movies and probably you get to see a wider range of stuff outside the main release date stuff. i appereciate your wide pallete takes on movies this year for stuff I would've otherwise missed. i think i might add The Creator back on my list as an honorable mention, for some reason the good by scene with the robot kid and the dad made me cry for some reason, no idea why. for me my top 2 movies were Godzilla Minus One and The Boy and The Heron mostly for pathos and quality that I felt I was missing from some of the theatrical films this year. thank you for your video.
TOP 10 BEST MOVIES OF 2023: 1. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse 2. Godzilla Minus One 3. Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part I 4. John Wick Chapter 4 5. Oppenheimer 6. Killers Of The Flower Moon 7. The Killer 8. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3 9. Scream VI 10. Elemental TOP 5 WORST MOVIES OF 2023: 1. Shotgun Wedding 2. Vacation Friends 2 3. After Everything 4. Knights Of The Zodiac 5. The Exorcist: Believer
Surprised to not see Bradley Cooper in the MVP category. The dude voiced Rocket one last time in GotG3, had a cameo in D&D, and even directed the crap out of Maestro.
I’m kinda surprised Barbie hasn’t really been on anyone’s list. Maybe I liked that more than most people? I took my 3.5 year old daughter to see it twice and she had an absolute blast. But she also loves Barbie’s to an extreme I’ve never witnessed lol
Chris Stuckmann and Austin Burke had Barbie in their list. Although not top 10 necessarily but they still gave Barbie a shout out. Same goes to the popular WatchMojo. I also think that Barbie is my top 20 favourite movie of the year
Most of these vloggers are just afraid to put the highest grossing film of the year just because it's based on a girls toy IP. It's a great movie surprisingly and they can't even put it on their top 10. They rather put boring run of the mill indie films as their "best".
I've only seen like 22 movies released this year and I've missed a lot of projects I want to see (Talk to Me, Oppenheimer, The Holdovers, John Wick 4 to name a few) but here are my current top ten: 1) Godzilla Minus One 2) Nimona 3) Across the Spiderverse 4) Evil Dead Rise 5) Barbie 6) Scream 6 7) D&D: Honor Among Thieves 8) Polite Society 9) Elemental 10) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 I watched way more older releases.... favorite First-time watches: 1) Shaolin Mantis (1978) 2) Seven Samurai (1954) 3) Godzilla Minus One (2023) 4) Nimona (2023) 5) Dragon Inn (1967) 6) Dirty Ho (1978) 7) Rashomon (1950) 8) The Chinese Boxer (1970) 9) Thelma & Louise (1991) 10) The Boxer from Shantung (1972) 11) Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse (2023) 12) A Matter of Life and Death (1946) 13) The Fablemans (2022) 14) Some Like it Hot (1959) 15) Black Narcissus (1947)
For a young actor that would never heave a chance to be nominated for some award I would add a young girl (sorry, don't know her name) in Sound of Freedom. She spoke with her eyes. Amazing.
I'll be in the Creator island with you, Dan. I loved it. My friend and I came out of Anatomy of a Fall with different thoughts about the end of Anatomy of a Fall. Both loved it.. Seeing Zone of Interest today.
Turned out that giving Zack Snyder a huge creative freedom doesn't make him a better storyteller after all. Thank goodness Rebel Moon was released on Netflix so i can easily skip the boring slow motion part and paused when I need too if i'm not fully invested with the story 😂 So glad that DC is in safe hands by James Gunn, sure it couldn't have been worse than what Snyder created 🤷
Only 3 of my Top 10 aren't in your Top 20 😅 I personally had Flora and Son, May December, and Asteroid City in there. However, my Top 2 movies are ones that I would never would have seen if it weren't for your recommendations in the channel. D&D was just a fun time and I've rewatched it so many times with my family who I have a campaign group with. I also would have never seen Are You There God? It's Me Margaret but man did I really connect with the movie once I gave it a shot after your summer recap. I personally found her spiritual journey aligning very close to my own and it goes to show how you can relate any story as long as the characters are at the center of it. Here's to 2024, Dan! 🎉
There are a lot of great movies I haven't seen yet, but here are my top 10 as of this moment: 1) Asteroid City 2) Killers of the Flower Moon 3) Godzilla Minus One 4) The Holdovers 5) Past Lives 6) No One Will Save You 7) The Creator 8) Oppenheimer 9) Dungeons and Dragons 10) Across the Spider-verse
My list 1-10: Missing (Disgustingly underrated) MI7 Oppenheimer Creator Spider-verse GOTG3 John wick 4 Dungeons and dragons Strays Scream vi Transformers GT
Great list here is mine 1.The Holdovers 2.Oppenheimer 3.Killers of the Flower Moon 4.Godzilla Minus One 5.Across the Spiderverse 6.John Wick 4 7.When Evil Lurks 8.MI Dead Reckoning 9.The Iron Claw 10.Ferrari Have a happy new year!!!
Any other year, I think Dominic Sessa would get several Supporting Actor nominations, including an Oscar nomination. I was happy you mentioned the other two main performances, Dan, but disappointed you didn’t mention Dominic Sessa. It was his first film role ever, and his acting was on the same level as his adult counterparts.
I found it offensive doing a worst films of the year list without including that shameful trash of a cash grab called The Exorcist Believer. One of truly despicable garbage I've seen all year.
a film that not many people have talked enough about this year was Polite Society, a wierd comedy kung fu action, spy story set around an ordinary ethnic british family drama, it's really funny, a great lead performance, the ending might not be to everybody's taste but i loved how crazy it went. and in the same vein, but on the opposite scale, Bottoms, didn't get the hype for this, didn't find it particulary funny, just kind of vulgar and OTT.
I liked The Creator. Not loved but I liked it. The kid was terrific and it looked beautiful despite costing a lot less than movies that don’t look as good. Godzilla Minus One blew me away. I can’t remember the last time I was in a theater and people applauded at the end but that’s what happened when I went to see the big lizard. Best Godzilla movie to me and I have seen them all.
Top 10: 1. Saltburn 2. Poor Things 3. Godzilla Minus One 4. Across the Spiderverse 5. Killers of the Flower Moon 6. Leave the World Behind 7. When Evil Lurks 8. Infinity Pool 9. John Wick 4 10. The Creator
I’m on The Creator Island as well! Here are my top 20 of the movies I saw in 2023 in no particular order. 1) Godzilla Minus One 2) Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse 3) Jawan 4) Poor Things 5) The Creator 6) Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani 7) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 8) Ponniyin Selvan Part 2 9) Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms 10) The Last Wife 11) Dunki 12) Elemental 13) Suzume 14) Dungeons and Dragons Honor Amongst Thieves 15) Tiger 3 16) The Holdovers 17) Monster 18) River 19) Concrete Utopia 20) Killing Romance starring the recently deceased Lee Sun-kyun Even though I go to the movies 3-4 times a week or more there’s just so many films coming out from all over the world that I see it’s hard to see them all. I watched but didn’t finish Oppenheimer because I was tired and left midway through an early screening of the film thinking I’d go back and rewatch it another time but never did. Guess I’ll have to watch it on streaming now.
My top 10 movies of the year (based on when I saw them in the cinema) 1 Across the spiderverse 2. Puss in boots 2 3. Dumb Money 4. Allelujah 5. John wick 4 6. Renfield 7. A man called otto 8. GOTG 3 9. Banshees of inisherin 10. MI:Dead Reckoning Honorable mentions to TMNT, Sisu and 3 musketeers:D’artagnan. Worst movies I saw this year: Are you there god its me Margaret, greatest day, Transformers, the meg 2 and blackberry
This was seriously such a great year for film, here’s my top 10: 10. *Guardians of the Galaxy vol.3* 9. *John Wick 4* 8. *May December* 7. *Poor Things* (Gorgeous film, incredible acting, and Lanthimos at his best) 6. *The Holdovers* (Nothing would be sweeter this awards season than a Dominic Sessa surprise nomination) 5. *Killers of the Flower Moon* 4. *Barbie* (Ok Ryan Gosling winning the Oscar for playing Ken would maybe be even sweeter) 3. *Past Lives* (This film made me ugly cry in a theatre full of old people, yea it’s a 10/10) 2. *Oppenheimer* (Powerhouse of a film by a powerhouse director, could easily move up to number 1 on a rewatch) 1. *Across the Spiderverse* (The first one is great but this just takes it up a level, both one of the greatest superhero- and animated films of all time imo) Honourable mentions: The Boy and the Heron, Godzilla Minus One, How To Have Sex, Air and MI7
My top 10 picks for this year would be: 1. Anatomy of a Fall 2. Poor Things 3. The Holdovers 4. All of Us Strangers 5. Zone of Interest 6. May December 7. Barbie 8. The Color Purple 9. Oppenheimer 10. American Fiction Worst film of 2023 - Rebel Moon

Rating of Dan's Ratings #10 Godzilla Minus One - meh, it's enjoyable, but it's got issues due to it's low budget. It's not even close to top ten for 2023 in my opinion. #9 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse should've won an award for most hyphens in a movie title 2023. #8 Past Lives - I didn't wish to see it so I didn't. #7 The Creator was an awesome movie. #6 The Holdovers is a new Christmas staple. #5 Maestro - didn't interest me. #4 Poor Things is one I'll catch on streaming. #3 Anatomy of a Fall looks like another that I'll catch on streaming. #2 The Zone of Interest interests me, but I'll catch that on streaming too. #1 Oppie is a great movie. Nuf' said.
I loved The Creator! It was Dan’s recommendation that brought it on my radar and led me to watch it. Poor Things is amazing. If you just told me the plot I would be horrified, but it somehow works!
Yesterday, I went to see Dogman by Luc Besson and it immediately became my favorite movie of the year. Oppenheimer was great, but Dogman took me on an emotional journey that this year is only rivaled by The Boy and the Heron. I read that Dogman is scheduled for a 2024 release in the United States. Don`t listen to Rotten Tomatoes, it`s a great movie.
Dan, you’re one of my favorite film critics yet we disagree massively on certain films. It’s baffling. It’s almost like we’re two different people! Thanks for all the great reviews this year, and congrats on your wedding!
A film is subjective, is normal for people to agree to disagree with certain films. It happens all the time, I've disagree with Dan several times but I don't hold grudge against his take, if he likes it that's cool, if he doesn't that's okay
Thanks Dan for these awesome lists / mentions, and thank you for really rocking it in 2023. You’ve made the best film critique content on RUclips and that’s saying something. And I don’t say that because I always agree with you. I’m saying it because you’ve done it.
My pick for Best Performance That Never Had a Chance is Tobin Bell in SAW X And for 2022, Jessie Buckley for Men. One of the best performances I think I've ever seen, honestly.
I love the love for Thanksgiving. Great theater experience and possible future horror classic. Favorite Films of 2023 1. Oppenheimer 2. Poor Things 3. The Holdovers 4. Killers of the Flower Moon 5. Sisu 6. Thanksgiving 7. Infinity Pool 8. Asteroid City 9. Maestro 10. Mission Impossible 7 HM: Past Lives
My Top 10 had more mainstream films than normal. It was still a tough list to compile. Honorable Mentions: the Blackening, the Covenant, Landscape By Invisible Hand, Suzumi, the Outlaw Johnny Black, the Holdovers Top: 10 10: Asteroid City 9: Slotherhouse 8: Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse 7: Beau Is Afraid 6: Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 5: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 4: Renfield 3: Super Mario Bros.: the Movie 2: Sisu 1: Godzilla: Minus One
10) Air 09) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 08) John Wick Chapter 4 07) Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One 06) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 05) Nimona 04) Godzilla Minus One 03) Oppenheimer 02) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 01) The Holdovers
Solid list my man. Hey look I’m glad you loved The Creator and you connected with it, I just wish I was on the same wavelength. Visually impressive, but I found the characters underwritten but that’s me. Maestro also I liked but didn’t love, just wish the narrative was more focused, it was little disjointed. But some of the other films (from what I’ve seen) I agree: Oppenheimer, Godzilla, Spiderverse, Past Lives, The Holdovers, those are on my best list. As far as the Worst, I didn’t see Blood and Honey and Knights of the Zodiac and I have zero interest to check them out, Rebel Moon I agree wholeheartedly, and The Marvels I definitely didn’t dislike it as much as you did, honestly in terms of the mid/bad comic book movies this year, I was entertained by it than Aquaman 2 (mostly because of the leads), I remember moments of it compared to Shazam 2, and I didn’t hate many elements of it compared to The Flash and Quantumania, but it is an average movie and could’ve been better if it didn’t feel rushed. Just doesn’t scream *Worst of the Year* for me. Honestly I’m surprised Meg 2 or Expendables 4 didn’t make your list unless you forgot them.
Glad Godzilla got into your top 10 (honestly thought it might be an honorable mention). For me, it was my first Godzilla film and I think it was just a film for me. It would be my top film of the year, but I can’t deny Oppenheimer was just so well done too… so deciding between those 2 for me is just a struggle.
You might think you're on an island alone with "The Creator", but I actually think you might be on an even more isolated island when it comes to "Maestro". If there's one film in awards contention that I couldn't stand or understand the praise for, it was that one. Great compilation of your bests and worsts overall, though. Enjoyed seeing you recap the biggies.
I felt like the blocking and framing to avoid showing a likeness of Michael Jordan in Air was torturous. If you haven't secured the rights to show a likeness of a person, how do you even attempt to make a movie about a product so impacted by that person? Worst movie I saw all year.
They do show his likeness in the archival footage that's used at the end of the film. From what I've read, they didn't show Jordan because they felt it would be a distraction from the story - the minute you show him, people start thinking about if he looks/sounds like the real MJ and the focus is off the drama of the film. If that is your sole reason for hating it, it's not for the reason you think.
I'm so glad you put The Creator on your list Dan! I freaking loved it! In my mind it's right up there with Dune in terms of effects quality and close to the same level as Blade Runner 2049 with it's world building! Great pick that I see being omitted from a lot of people's lists!
@@desertsuede4 You make an interesting criticism that I haven't heard before, but I have a couple of follow up questions for you. Is it the idea of "AI" as a conceptual solution to the world's problems that you see as a flaw? If that's the case, I'd say you make an interesting point, I see a lot of euphoria and "utopia is nigh" sort of rhetoric surrounding the advancement of AI in society today, and I do agree that that mindset is pretty short sighted, and borders on magical thinking. Or is it just that one of the main characters is a non-human entity? If this is the case, I point out that the protagonist/main character of the movie is a human man, and I would also argue that, if you had to select a single character as the hero of the movie, I would argue that John David Washington's character Joshua would be the hero. He's the one that sacrifices his own life at the end of the movie in order to save what he sees as humanity in the AI characters, and specifically in the young girl Alphie. If that's not a hero, Idk what is. Finally, if I take your comment at face value and assume that your comment means that you think this movie is just glorifying AI as a concept, I would really want to push back against that as an interpretation of the film's message. I think the movie has much more to say regarding how we treat the people around use that we see as "other" than it does about how awesome AI is going to be or something. The movie is asking questions about what it means to be human and how far the society we live in will go in order to maintain the status quo. I would ask, do you think Spielberg's movie "AI", or Bicentennial Man, or Blade Runner 2049 have "the AI" as "the hero"? From a very surface level reading of those films I think you could say yes, but if you pull on that thread even a little bit, I think it becomes clear that they have a lot more to say. I would argue that they make humans' ability to find humanity in beings that are by definition no human into the hero of the movie. They're not saying "the other is the hero", they're saying "our ability to find humanity in the other is the hero". Sorry, this got kind of ramble-y, but I am honestly curious why the presence of AI as a character (not the main character) in The Creator rubbed you the wrong way.
This movie also makes my top 10. It takes a very familiar premise as its foundation, adds a basic sci-fi plot to serve as its structure, and then builds a breathtakingly unique story around it. The visuals were sumptuous and the world-building was top-notch, while the characters and performances kept my attention throughout. This movie had me on the edge of my seat with tension - not because of novel plot twists, but because I actually cared about the main characters: their twisting and turning relationships, their myopic flaws and their individual arcs. The tone of the movie also made the personal stakes for those characters feel especially high, to the extent that I wasn't sure which of them would make it to the end. But most of all, what struck me and stuck with me about The Creator was how tragically and realistically it depicted war. The motivations of both factions (and non-combatants alike) were incredibly believable, with real-world analogs readily apparent in current conflicts as well as past ones. The reason this is a top-ten for me is summed up in how it personified two words: collateral damage.
I loved The Creator like Dan did, but I also really enjoyed The Marvels which Dan kinda views as a huge mess. I appreciate his point of view regardless of when we agree and disagree! Love you Dan!
Movie fans constantly complain about unoriginal big budget blockbusters, then movies like The Creator come out and people refuse to see or talk about it.
Awesome picks, Dan! Your perspective is always a treat because it isn't totally by-the-numbers. It's honest and includes movies I haven't heard of or seen in other lists. Happy New Year!
My top 10 favorite films of the year: 1. Oppenheimer 2. The Creator 3. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 4. Wonka 5. Five Nights at Freddy’s 6. Dream Scenario 7. A Haunting in Venice 8. Gran Turismo 9. Knock at the Cabin 10. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One

Thanks so much - tell your friends! It’s harder and harder to cut through the noise.
Suzume was such a nice surprise. Watched it in a one night only showing in Canada, loved it.
The criticism of Poor Things makes sense but at the same time, the film is very fable/fairy tale like, so for me I don't take it as literally as others do.
My top 10:
1. Across The Spiderverse
2. When Evil Lurks
3. The Holdovers
4. Air
5. Blackberry
6. Oppenheimer
7. Dungeons and Dragons
8. Are You There God? It’s me Margaret.
9. Godzilla Minus One
10. Bottoms
One of the only lists I seen with honorable mentions for Air and Dungeons. That's why I respect Dan's reviews.
Great list, Dan. I wrote down a few movies I missed that you mentioned that I really want to see now!
Society of the snow is in my top 3. The whole cast was phenomenal.
Struggling to see why the premise of Oppenheimer is at first glance boring or “waste of a Sunday afternoon”
Aren’t all movies about people who started out with the brain of a child?
Touché
Dungeons and Dragons, was a shockingly good movie. Perhaps a "Most Re-watchable" Award in future?
Love you Dan! Been a fan since screen junkies- I was in sixth grade then, now I'm a screenwriting major at a film school! You guys did so much to fuel my passion for film, I miss it like crazy. Glad you're still doing stuff!
Extra props for recognizing how good Alden Ehrenreich has been this year.
I'm so happy he's finally coming back after Solo! He was totally thrown under the bus on it when he was one of the best parts...he just didn't have anything to work with.

They do it that way so that you don't know what is on the top ten. If you list honorable mentions first, you now know a bunch of movies that didn't make his top ten, but maybe you thought they should have been.
I like how you spell honorable
I always do honorable mention first
Watch mojos fault
You have it backwards. Putting honorable mentions at the beginning makes no sense because it kills suspense.
I think Dan has my favorite top movie list of 2023, very unique especially with the early "special awards". Jeremy Jahns' list my runner-up.
The Top Ten Top Tens of 2023. make it now. im invested
You are easily one of my favorite content creators, congratulations to you and Mara and I hope your New Years is fun and safe, man 👍🏻 thank you for
It's been approx. 1 min since upload, I definitely watched this entire 32 minute video. Great choices Dan. ;)
u still watching?
@@friedoysterskins2942 Of course!
@@ShaneRob93 lol

My top 10 of the year:
10. Polite Society
9. The Holdovers
8. The Boy and The Heron
7. Bottoms
6. Suzume
5. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1
4. Killers of the Flower Moon
3. Oppenheimer
2. Godzilla Minus One
I didn't expect her to be the best part of season 2, heck even better than Jeremy Allen White? Wow that's impressive
@@K0m30ngyes her and Ebon were better than J.A.W. this season.
Oooh I still haven't watched any of these, really really wanna watch The Bear tho
Oh and teenage mutant ninja turtles but I missed it at the cinema cause someone I was going with doesn't like watching animation on the big screen smh
@@Karin-fj3euyou’re allowed to go to movies without other people too.
I love everything you said about Oppenheimer which is why it’s my Number 1 too for 2023. And now one of my favourite films of all time. It was a cinematic experience I’ll never forget. Hope it wins everything this awards season🏆
Ditto. This is going to be one of my very selective films ever made. We saw it 3 times in IMAX. Wow. Just wow.
Just wanna shout out a performance that I unironically loved from this year, Messi the dog as Snoop, from Anatomy of a Fall
If there were Dog Academy Awards, Messi would take home the acting prize easily. Not even close.
@@DanMurrellMovies Well, at least he won the Palm Dog!
Take my thumbs-up and get out
@@DanMurrellMovies Oh, I will! But it is a real thing that happens alongside Cannes 😂
Alden Ehrenreich stole my heart in Hail, Caesar! I really thought he had a shot at being a big star. Disney did him dirty with everything that happened on Solo. I'm glad that he's finally breaking through in solid supporting roles. I hope he keeps that momentum going.
Same! Hail, Caesar! has some seriously underappreciated acting and craft.
Great list Dan! For MVP actors that had a versatile body of work in 2023, I'd also give a shoutout to Colman Domingo for The Color Purple, Rustin, Sing Sing (premiered at TIFF)
Godzilla Minus One was the most impactful movie to me this year, I cried like a baby for it.
My Top 11 (Includes Die Hard)
1. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part One

10. Poor Things
Same! The Creator rules hard.
Saw it by myself and loved it, was able to convince my family to go and see it and all of them loved it too. I think it just didn't get the marketing it needed. So far nobody I know that saw it has said they didnt' like it. It just lacked the hype to succeed at the Box office sadly.
Nah he's on an island. It was too long and acting bad
It wasn't long enough as there was quick flashback edits. It gets the same criticism as Bade Runner did when it was released. Modern classic. Guaranteed.

I wish I could've put The Creator in my list but storyproblems hang me on that. But if you ask me, did I enjoy The Creator? Absolutely, will I watch it again maybe in the future? Absolutely
What?? Dog Gone didn't get the accurate title award?? 😂
I think my top 10 best goes like this:

was working on my list of movies of 2023 that i liked.
🤣we had drastically different movies in the top 10 department
I hadn't even heard of Zone of Interest or Anatomy of a Fall.
I like your thought process for good movies. I feel similarly. my favorites this year were Spiderman Across the Spiderverse and Barbie.
Great list, Oppehiemer is my #1 too. Thank you for an amazing year of content.

5. The Exorcist: Believer
Surprised to not see Bradley Cooper in the MVP category. The dude voiced Rocket one last time in GotG3, had a cameo in D&D, and even directed the crap out of Maestro.
For me he directed the crap INTO Maestro -- sorry!
Reallly enjoyed that Dan. You win my award for the most thoughtful and thought provoking Top 10 list of the year. 🎉
I also think that Barbie is my top 20 favourite movie of the year
The very fact that a 3,5 year old loved it should tell you that it's rubbish.
Or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3
Most of these vloggers are just afraid to put the highest grossing film of the year just because it's based on a girls toy IP. It's a great movie surprisingly and they can't even put it on their top 10. They rather put boring run of the mill indie films as their "best".
Or it's anti patriachy that's why
I've only seen like 22 movies released this year and I've missed a lot of projects I want to see (Talk to Me, Oppenheimer, The Holdovers, John Wick 4 to name a few) but here are my current top ten:
1) Godzilla Minus One
2) Nimona
3) Across the Spiderverse
4) Evil Dead Rise
5) Barbie
6) Scream 6
7) D&D: Honor Among Thieves
8) Polite Society
9) Elemental
10) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
I watched way more older releases.... favorite First-time watches:
1) Shaolin Mantis (1978)
2) Seven Samurai (1954)
3) Godzilla Minus One (2023)
4) Nimona (2023)
5) Dragon Inn (1967)
6) Dirty Ho (1978)
7) Rashomon (1950)
8) The Chinese Boxer (1970)
9) Thelma & Louise (1991)
10) The Boxer from Shantung (1972)
11) Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse (2023)
12) A Matter of Life and Death (1946)
13) The Fablemans (2022)
14) Some Like it Hot (1959)
15) Black Narcissus (1947)
For a young actor that would never heave a chance to be nominated for some award I would add a young girl (sorry, don't know her name) in Sound of Freedom. She spoke with her eyes. Amazing.
I'll be in the Creator island with you, Dan. I loved it.
My friend and I came out of Anatomy of a Fall with different thoughts about the end of Anatomy of a Fall. Both loved it..
Seeing Zone of Interest today.
I'm with both of you on The Creator
Also in The Creator island. It’s a great place to be.
My top 5 were Asteroid City, Guardians 3, The Boy and the Heron, Godzilla Minus one, and Oppenheimer, I think in that order.
John. Wick. Chapter. 4.
I trust Dans taste wholeheartedly, added so many movies to my watchlist now. It’s such a pleasant experience to listen to him talk about film
My top 5:
1- Barbie
2- Sound Of Freedom
3- Oppenheimer
4- The Hunger Games Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes
5- Wonka
There are a lot of great movies I haven't seen yet, but here are my top 10 as of this moment:
1) Asteroid City
2) Killers of the Flower Moon
3) Godzilla Minus One
4) The Holdovers
5) Past Lives
6) No One Will Save You
7) The Creator

7.When Evil Lurks
8.MI Dead Reckoning
9.The Iron Claw
10.Ferrari
Have a happy new year!!!
Dan I'm with you on The Creator! I think it's an "original" sci-fi film that's sorely needed in today's movie landscape.
thank you Dan. My top 5
5 Zone of Interest
4 the Holdovers
3 Asteroid City
2 The Creator (yes I will die on this hill)
1 Oppenheimer
This is the 2nd Best of 2023 video not to include Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in any capacity 😔

Even though I go to the movies 3-4 times a week or more there’s just so many films coming out from all over the world that I see it’s hard to see them all. I watched but didn’t finish Oppenheimer because I was tired and left midway through an early screening of the film thinking I’d go back and rewatch it another time but never did. Guess I’ll have to watch it on streaming now.

2. *Oppenheimer* (Powerhouse of a film by a powerhouse director, could easily move up to number 1 on a rewatch)

Rating of Dan's Ratings
#10 Godzilla Minus One - meh, it's enjoyable, but it's got issues due to it's low budget.
Same I love the creator too
My top 5 movies of 2023:

2. ATSV
3. Equalizer 3
4. Guardians 3
5. Creed 3
Hey Dan I'd recommend Perfrct Days, Beyond Utopia and Monster if you haven't seen these films yet from 2023
Love your list, completely agree with you about Oppenheimer. That was one of the most complex movies I have ever seen, it was magnificent ART.
My pick for Best Performance That Never Had a Chance is Tobin Bell in SAW X
And for 2022, Jessie Buckley for Men. One of the best performances I think I've ever seen, honestly.
Jessie Buckley is so underrated.
Just watched rebel moon. It rips off 30 movies. It’s definitely the worst of this year.
Did you get a chance to see The Iron Claw yet? Really interested to hear your thoughts on it!
I love the love for Thanksgiving. Great theater experience and possible future horror classic. Favorite Films of 2023

My Top 10 had more mainstream films than normal. It was still a tough list to compile.

the Outlaw Johnny Black, the Holdovers
Top: 10
10: Asteroid City

03) Oppenheimer
02) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
01) The Holdovers
My top 5:
1. Spiderverse
2. Barbie
3. M3gan
4. The Creator
5. Wonka
The worst movie I saw was probably 65.
65 was so bad I stopped watching after 30 minutes. It was on an airplane and I literally had nothing better to do and still couldn’t keep watching.
I guess I'm splitting my time between several islands. It's nice to live tropical!
If that is your sole reason for hating it, it's not for the reason you think.
but I do wonder how much 'Barbenheimer' contributed to Oppenheimer's success. I dare say there were many seats occupied because of Barbie.
I’d say it definitely had an effect, but the movie would have been a hit regardless.
The best paired up films of 2023 are (unsealed the envelope): Godzilla Minus One and Oppenheimer.
I'm so glad you put The Creator on your list Dan! I freaking loved it! In my mind it's right up there with Dune in terms of effects quality and close to the same level as Blade Runner 2049 with it's world building! Great pick that I see being omitted from a lot of people's lists!
It's omitted probably for the same reason I couldn't get into it - the AI is the hero. Might as well make a WW2 movie with the Nazis as the heroes.
@@desertsuede4Team AI FTW!
Really interesting list, and I’d expect nothing less! You’re one of my favorites Dan, and keep up the fantastic work!
No love for John Wick Chapter 4 🤷🏽♂️😔
Reclaiming Alden Ehrenreich ♥. As Dan says, Solo wasn't his fault
