  • I turn 40 today, and instead of spiraling into an existential crisis, I'm naming a movie (or two) from each year of my life that has special meaning to me. And also spiraling into an existential crisis.

Happy Birthday Dan! I love you and all the passion and positivity you bring to the world and storytelling enthusiasts! I discovered you on Movie Fights close to a decade ago, and you were my fav person to watch back then even though I was a teenager who wasn't experienced enough in film and its history for a lot of your takes back then. But regardless, you pulled me in with your energy and enthusiasm.
My heart swells when you close out your videos with the little thumping over your heart. I may not really know you, and you definitely don't know who I am, but this 26 year old dubs thee her favourite "geriatric millennial".
    Happy Birthday!

"...it sparked a curiosity in me that I still have to this day." Cut to Jessica Rabbit saying, "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn this way." Nice editing there. But seriously, I'm only 1 year younger than you, Dan, and I'm still kinda surprised how many movies you chose I would choose too for the same reasons. Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Dan. Like most of us here I met you at SJ. From all the many great people there, to me you were the heart of the channel. Loved everytime you were on MovieFights, always bringing great picks and great arguments. I think the work you do covering the various facets of the entertainment business is remarkable, especially on the box office. In an age of so much desinformation and confusion, we have to support those committed with facts and context, who elevates the discourse and helps record history in a more intelligent way. Adding Dick Tracy, Shattered Glass and That Thing You Do to my watchlist, and cueing in Glengarry Glen Ross. Thanks, man!

Happy birthday brother. I turn 31 this Sunday. I loved this exercise and you've inspired me to take time this weekend to do my own retrospective. We share a lot of the same films that impacted us. Alot of it can come down to them hitting just at the right time.
My family brought me to see There Will Be Blood on my 16th birthday. That's a prime example. They were very confused and perhaps concerned that was how I wanted to spend my day but it definitely was a turning point on how I viewed film.

This is my favorite video of yours of all time. Been with you since ScreenJunkies and came over when you started this channel.
I was born in 1984 and we could nearly copy and paste all the films you love until 1996.
There are a few years where I had another big impact on me: (Casino, moonlights, Batman Begins, Inception, EEAO)
Overall though, I will literally use the first half of this video to show my son when he comes of age to see what made his dad fall in love with film.
I follow a number of critics (some you’ve podcasted with) but I 100% share film DNA the most with you.
    Keep up the work.
I tell people “I loved movies before it, but Jurassic Park is truly the film that sparked the fire for me”.

I have also been a movie fan my whole life but funny how we think differently about the movies that impacted us the most. You have lots of critically acclaimed movies in the last 20 years and I would have not so critically acclaimed movies. That just says a lot about you have an critic minded film fan and me as a what I enjoy no matter how dumb it may be fan. I think alot of people will agree with you if they have seen the movies. I am excited to discover so many of these films that I’ve never seen from your list. Great job as always and I’ll be watching you til we’re eighty for sure (sounds like a stalker. The 90's were a golden age where indie cinema met blockbuster productions, animation, and a beautiful mix of edgy but sincere storytelling. We were lucky to grow up then. The biggest difference would be 1995 - Goldeneye and Toy Story are great, but since this is about films that made an impact then Apollo 13 is the movie that [the very next day] got me to pick out every book I could find in the library about space and space exploration and put me on a path to a career as a planetary scientist.

Wow! This was so fun and insightful and interesting and unexpected and even challenging. You asked, so I'll say that I'm almost 13 years (12 years, 11 months and a few days if I want to be weirdly precise 😃 ) older than you. Even so, there was some overlap (Toy Story, Ferris Bueller, Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings), but for different reasons. Probably because I was at a different stage in life.....and I never 'felt' movies like you did/do. In fact I didn't think about them with much depth (with a few exceptions), until I discovered your channel because of your Artemis Fowl review. Now I rarely miss a video. And I tell my friends I have a 'movie guy' or 'my movie guy says'. ( we watched Glass Onion based on your recommendation.) Something else I tell my friends on their birthdays is "I'm glad you got born today". Let me say that to you a day late. "I'm glad you got born (yesterday)." Happy Birthday. Happy New Year and many many more of both of those!

Really enjoyed this video. As it happens, I was born ten years before you. So many of your picks were films that I got to see when they first opened, whereas you had to catch up with them much later on. I was very big on "Ghostbusters" and "Roger Rabbit" at the time, though I've developed different favorites since then, so my list would include less kid-friendly stuff.
I also took time in 2013 to get caught up on 1973 films. That was a pretty extraordinary year, although I'm sure that it had its share of bad films as well!
Here's a few of my lifetime favorites:
1973 - Serpico. Al Pacino is a New York cop trying to NOT take money from everyone offering. The other cops don't like this.
1977 - Star Wars: A New Hope. It couldn't be anything else.
1978 - Superman. Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman, no matter how good the new guys are.
1981 - Raiders Of The Lost Ark. I was only eight when this movie first came out, too young for all the violence. Instead, I had friends over for my birthday later on and we watched it together. They had all seen it already, and we had a blast.
1985 - Back To The Future. So somebody sat down and figured out all the ins and outs of this story, and that person is called a "screenwriter". Minute for minute, one of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen.
1986 - The Fly. Along with the original "Terminator" movie, I developed an affection for the "tragic sci-fi romance" (a sub-sub-genre with only a few films to its name). There's something about a doomed couple trapped in an unimaginable predicament that appeals to me.
1989 - Roger & Me. Michael Moore's first film really shook up my idea of what a documentary could be.
1990 - Goodfellas. Still my number-one favorite film of all time.
1992 - Reservoir Dogs. Quentin Tarantino has enjoyed his status as one my all-time favorite filmmakers ever since, and one of the few directors whose every single movie I've seen in a theater.
1995 - Seven. Seeing this on opening weekend was a devastating experience. I couldn't move from my seat even after the credits were finished. Probably the most memorable cinema event of my life.
2000 - Time Code. This odd ensemble comedy has been an obsession of mine ever since I went to see it three times. Must be seen on the largest screen you can find, since it's essentially four movies running simultaneously.
2005 - Batman Begins. At 32, I didn't expect to like a comic book movie this much. But it was the Batman movie I had waited all my life to see without realizing it. Finally, the story was about Bruce Wayne first and foremost.
2006 - United 93. Paul Greengrass' docudrama about the hijackings is noteworthy for its complete lack of "extra stuff"...unnecessary dramatizations of the characters' lives, just intense focus on the dire situation at hand. One of the greatest films ever made, IMO.
2010 - Inception. My jaw was hanging open during some of the sequences. "Who thinks up stuff like this?" I thought several times.
2016 - Captain America: Civil War. My favorite MCU movie. The interpersonal conflict between the heroes was quite the nail-biter...Definitely the most compelling, dramatically speaking.
2020 - I'm pleased to see that you liked "Promising Young Woman" as much as I did.
    2022 - Ditto "Tár".

Happy Birthday Dan! I’ve been a fan of yours since the screen junkie days and I’ll also be turning 40 next week. Thanks for adding to my movie lover experience with all that you do.
