In Spanish if you see an accent on a letter then you know that's where the strong syllable of the word is. In any case, the people criticizing you for something as small as this are completely crazy and definitely deserved the rant. Love the show Dan!
@dagrimmreepa True, but both languages are derived from Latin. So there is a lot overlap, and many words in both languages will sound and be spelled alike. So, can't really blame people for assuming an Italian name may look or be pronounced like a Spanish name. But Dan is correct regardless.

I have a last name with French origin, but I don't live in France, nor any French speaking country - I've long since given up about correcting people about how to pronounce it correctly. as long as I know they refer to me, I react to approximations of my last name. it's not that much of a big deal, languages and cultures vary the world over.

this was an odd time to release Megalopolis. i think it would've done poorly no matter what, but maybe it would've done a little better if released in the summer sept - people are fully back in the swing of school, work. football is back.......if people go to the movies, it won't be for artistic abstract experimental films

I saw Megalopolis. It was absolutely dreadful. I'm sure there are already hundreds of hours of RUclips video essays explaining why it's actually a masterpiece, but I hated it. When I went to see it, I was completely alone in the theater.
I can almost understand the consternation of movie fans over the pronunciation of Giancarlo Esposito's name. For decades, I have watched movie trailers and television promos and introductions on late night talk shows in which the announcers and hosts pronounced his name as "John-Carlo Es-poh-zee-toh." So, I'm surprised that at some point, someone didn't point out that they were all pronouncing it wrong. And I'm guessing that he's used to it and doesn't bother correcting anyone.
There should be a different name for a bomb that everyone could see coming a mile away. An actual bomb is a surprising explosion, but Megalopolis flopping was not.
The funny thing about megalopolis is that the story surrounding the film is so much more interesting than the movie itself. The plot is about a guy that wants to make... a city? I don't even know. All I know is that I love Coppola and I am not interested in this movie. But a documentary about him and the path to getting this movie released would be much more interesting.
how the hell they managed to get Last duels budget to 100 million..? they spent it all on the big names salary? that movie had no CGI, no huge battles, nothing to really justify it, unless they actually bought the castles and land they filmed it on or something..

Espósito is an Spanish and Italian name. Because of his first name I think it's Italian in this case. Italian and Spanish have similar pronunciations. So, Dan, you are absolutely correct, as Giancarlo is. In Spanish it even has a tilde on the first o to accentuate that syllable. Having said that, I think mispronouncing names is just an excuse to get offended, it's a stupid trend. No non Spanish speaking person has ever said my name correctly, and you know what, it doesn't matter, they say it the way it is said in their mothers tongue, and that is fine. I actually like, or I usually introduce myself with the short version of my name which is easier.

The Spanish surname "Expósito" (from which most probably the actor's surname may actually come) was given to foster kids when they didn't know who their parents were (there are also other foster surnames apart from Expósito). That would most probably mean that Giancarlo Esposito can track his ancestry up to an orphan with unknown parents.

I absolutely loved Megalopolis. Clearly not a commercial film, but we dont get enough leftfield cinema nowadays. Some of the reviews make wonder how films like Brazil and Holy Mountain would be received today. Its clearly not for everyone, but thats ok.

I think it is a real bummer that arguably the two best transformers movies - Bumblebee and Transformers One - are the two lowest grossing in the franchise. I guess audiences really just want explosions and hot babes in their Transformers movies
In our local theater, we had 10 people watch it the entire weekend on multiple screens showing it. We also had a day where our theater screens were bought out to show Right Wing leaning films like Am I a Racist? , Reagan, and Vindicating Trump. All except for Vindicating Trump sold more than Megalopolis on one day than the entire weekend.
So many big figures in Hollywood history have names pronounced in an American way, that's just a normal consequence of immigration and how words and names are adopted into another culture or language but it's really silly not to know that there can be differences and it's great to see someone sticking up for a more original pronunciation. It's funny I was thinking a little about this subject as I rewatched Once Upon A Time in Hollywood last night and there's a scene where Al Pacino's character insists on a different pronunciation of his name Schwarz, which may be an affection or more accurate but what matters is that it is respectful and wise to go along with what the name's owner feels comfortable with.
God the internet is so unhinged sometimes - Dan, keep doin' what you do, including these rants. It's very validating to get the occasional reminder that there are crazy people out there who can latch onto something they think you're wrong about, be proven wrong, and then refuse to back down. I wouldn't be shocked if we found out 30 years from now that Megalopolis only cost 1 million dollars and everybody got huge kickbacks and Coppolla just sent out this boondoggle to avoid a tax bill for his kids.

I saw Megalopolis. It was absolutely dreadful. I'm sure there are already hundreds of hours of RUclips video essays explaining why it's actually a masterpiece, but I hated it. When I went to see it, I was completely alone in the theater.
I can almost understand the consternation of movie fans over the pronunciation of Giancarlo Esposito's name. For decades, I have watched movie trailers and television promos and introductions on late night talk shows in which the announcers and hosts pronounced his name as "John-Carlo Es-poh-zee-toh." So, I'm surprised that at some point, someone didn't point out that they were all pronouncing it wrong. And I'm guessing that he's used to it and doesn't bother correcting anyone.
There should be a different name for a bomb that everyone could see coming a mile away. An actual bomb is a surprising explosion, but Megalopolis flopping was not.
The funny thing about megalopolis is that the story surrounding the film is so much more interesting than the movie itself. The plot is about a guy that wants to make... a city? I don't even know. All I know is that I love Coppola and I am not interested in this movie. But a documentary about him and the path to getting this movie released would be much more interesting.
how the hell they managed to get Last duels budget to 100 million..? they spent it all on the big names salary? that movie had no CGI, no huge battles, nothing to really justify it, unless they actually bought the castles and land they filmed it on or something..

Espósito is an Spanish and Italian name. Because of his first name I think it's Italian in this case. Italian and Spanish have similar pronunciations. So, Dan, you are absolutely correct, as Giancarlo is. In Spanish it even has a tilde on the first o to accentuate that syllable. Having said that, I think mispronouncing names is just an excuse to get offended, it's a stupid trend. No non Spanish speaking person has ever said my name correctly, and you know what, it doesn't matter, they say it the way it is said in their mothers tongue, and that is fine. I actually like, or I usually introduce myself with the short version of my name which is easier.

The Spanish surname "Expósito" (from which most probably the actor's surname may actually come) was given to foster kids when they didn't know who their parents were (there are also other foster surnames apart from Expósito). That would most probably mean that Giancarlo Esposito can track his ancestry up to an orphan with unknown parents.
Again Dan, thank you for trying and rightly pronouncing names as the originate or are pronounced by the people that have them, you included. I absolutely loved Megalopolis. Clearly not a commercial film, but we dont get enough leftfield cinema nowadays. Some of the reviews make wonder how films like Brazil and Holy Mountain would be received today.

I think it is a real bummer that arguably the two best transformers movies - Bumblebee and Transformers One - are the two lowest grossing in the franchise. I guess audiences really just want explosions and hot babes in their Transformers movies
In our local theater, we had 10 people watch it the entire weekend on multiple screens showing it. We also had a day where our theater screens were bought out to show Right Wing leaning films like Am I a Racist? , Reagan, and Vindicating Trump. All except for Vindicating Trump sold more than Megalopolis on one day than the entire weekend.

So many big figures in Hollywood history have names pronounced in an American way, that's just a normal consequence of immigration and how words and names are adopted into another culture or language but it's really silly not to know that there can be differences and it's great to see someone sticking up for a more original pronunciation. It's funny I was thinking a little about this subject as I rewatched Once Upon A Time in Hollywood last night and there's a scene where Al Pacino's character insists on a different pronunciation of his name Schwarz, which may be an affection or more accurate but what matters is that it is respectful and wise to go along with what the name's owner feels comfortable with.
