Pretty sad about Netflix continously canceling shows after viewers get invested. Knowing how Dark evolved through 3 seasons, you'd think they would appreciate the formula; however, canceling 1899 after just 1 season, while knowing it's completely written with an ending ready, is super disappointing. Netflix is making me want to wait to see if shows are renewed before even getting myself involved in a storyline. Why watch when they are going to cancel on cliffhangers resulting in nothingness. I hope another platform picks it up, cause Netflix is getting too frustrating. 🙏
That's already how I watch most shows to begin with. I watch shows that are already finished or will finish soon. It's a nice way of cutting your losses and plus maybe finding some gems that aren't talked about because they're older and not new and trendy
Ironically, this approach is exactly why Netflix cancels shows. Not judging or anything, I'm the same, I usually only get around to watching new shows when the hype has already quieted down. But Netflix measures success in how much buzz a show creates, meaning: how many people binged this thing as soon as it came out to then go on social media and post memes about it, essentially advertising the show so people get subscriptions to see what the fuzz is all about, which is why Wednesday was such a huge success. So in not watching shows as soon as they come out, your watchtime doesn't really count towards their success as far as Netflix is concerned. Which is such a shame because it gives shows like 1899 a serious disadvantage. Tbh I still haven't finished it because I like to watch the episodes one at a time and think about them, and I know many people who also take their time with it. Meanwhile I'll binge easily digestable shows even when I don't really love them just because they make for nice background noise while gaming ^^' so I guess if Netflix continues measuring success like this, we'll end up with mostly easily digestable, easily memeable, mediocre quality shows...
@@Nirax3 About generating buzz for a show: The way Netflix usually releases shows, all episodes of a season all at once, has been shown to generate LESS buzz for a show, than releasing the episodes one at a time once a week (like HBO does). So they are kind of doing it wrong, even though personally I like to able to binge-watch it directly if I like to.
@@NisseHult101 yeah I mean they did that kind of hybrid release for Stranger Things S4 and it was a total success. I guess they are trying to figure out how to keep the bingewatching concept that is kind of their thing but also keep the hype alive longer with these stretching final episodes. I wonder if we're gonna see more of the big Netflix show following that pattern of a few 40min bunch released episodes and then some feature film length final episodes. Because that again changes how a show is structured, written and watched
I am an aspiring linguist so 1899 is like a dream come true for me. I would love to work on a project like that as a writer or translator. I am also a huge huge fan of Dark, it’s my favourite thing I have ever seen - including both shows and movies. I am also Polish so I was super excited to see a Polish actor working with my favourite showrunners and when I heard him speak Polish for the first time I literally jumped because I was so excited. It was the show I anticipated the most this year and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Easily my favourite thing I have seen this year!
So as a linguist, it does not bother you that the characters seem to understand each other, like they are reading the subtitles? :D Man it must be rather disappointing if just hearing your own language will make you love a show, that means rather low bars. I am hungarian and there are plenty of movies and shows with hungarian actors but that's not what will make me like a show, but good writing and interesting concepts.
@@SwiftNimblefoot i never got the impression that they understood each other? with the exception of the danish characters who also spoke some german, and various characters who obviously understood some english i always viewed it as the characters who didnt speak the same language just trying their best to grasp what was going on through the other characters tone of voice and gestures; there were multiple characters who seemed to have zero idea what was happening because they couldnt understand anyone (ramiro in particular). either way i'm sure it could be explained away by the ship being a simulation anyway
@@SwiftNimblefoot Did you watch a dub because these are terrible, I started off on the wrong foot with this show entirely because Netflix fed me the English dub first.
I hope that you eventually cover "Derry Girls", a sitcom about four Irish girls and an unfortunately British boy coming of age during the Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1990's. It finished up earlier this year, and though the final season wasn't as great as the previous two, it still ended up on an uplifting note. It can make you laugh one minute, and cry the next, and many of the characters are relatable, and feel like people you grew up with.
@@friendlyspaceninja Coolness, I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it! The strong accents might be hard to get used to at first, but they definitely grow on you as the show progresses. 😍❣️
About 1899 not being as good as Dark, I feel the same way, but I wanted to add tha Dark also feels like a masterpiece because of its satisfying end and no loose ends, while 1899 is still at the beginning of its journey. I'm sure once the show is finished it will be up there with Dark
Agreed but I actually think 1899 wasnt as good because it was too much of a mystery. In Dark, there are plenty of mysteries but you pretty much know whats happening to the town from ep 3. I was confused for most of this season which made it hard to appreciate all the details but Im sure it'll be much better with a rewatch. Cant wait for S2
Anyone could actually follow what the point of Dark was? I could follow 12 Monkeys but Dark was a convoluted mess with characters not having clear goals. What was all the time travel really about?
@@SwiftNimblefoot 12 monkeys is the definition of convoluted in the way it doesnt even establish time travel rules. Dark is a masterpiece with virtually no plot holes. The characters dont have clear goals but thats why its so interesting to watch. If you ask me in these comments however I could probably tell you what each characters main goals are.
100% im so excited to see the future seasons. I also thought dark season 1 was pretty boring at the time It was only until the later seasons that I understood the genius of it.
Homelander is terrifying. Chills down your spine every time he's on screen. Absolute kudos to the actor for being able to consistently bring the sinister energy!
I thought his season 3 version was quite dumbed down and over the top though. Feels like the character doesn’t really have much to offer now. I do think I feel that way because of how massively fascinated I was with his creepy relationship with the CEO in season 1, and how disappointed I was that they killed her off
It is so annoying to see 1899 getting cancelled. Dark was one of the best shows in television history, but, honestly, it wouldn't be if there was only season 1. It is so common for shows to open up several plot narratives and mysteries just to disappoint with the payoff. Dark is the opposite. Mid season 3 I thought there is no way to tie all of this toghether in a coherent way. I was wrong. I don't think we can ever judge 1899 fairly, unless we get to see the scripts or it get's continued against all odds.
I agree to an extent...but even so, Dark had already done more than enough to prove that it was worth your time by the end of its first season. I love Dark as much as Ninja and it's easily my favorite show...but they dropped the ball a bit with 1899. Is it terrible? Absolutely not. Is it incredible? Absolutely not. I enjoyed it, but compared to all of the other shows on here (and three shows it pains me to NOT see on here: The Last of Us, Wednesday, and Only Murders in the Building), it is bluntly profoundly mediocre. It most definitely could have turned into something remarkable, but it definitely didn't come anywhere close to instilling me with the same level of commitment and intrigue that Dark did. And I think the fact that, in addition to 1899 being cancelled, after nearly 5 months it hasn't been picked up by any other streaming service (and, based on how this kind of thing has gone in the past, never will) speaks volumes. For example, NBC announced that it was cancelling Community on May 9, 2014, and Yahoo announced that it was picking it up June 2, 2014, less than a month later. Upsets me a lot to see it cancelled because I'm still a fan and I would've really liked to see where things go, but it definitely doesn't deserve a spot on this list more than any of the three I named.
only gripe i have withj arcane is the anime label, whitye people please stop trying to make anime it dilutes the medium and blurs the lines between love death robots , pixar animations and anime itself. hated cyberpunk for that almost hated arcane for the same but turns outit wasn't actually anime just another great white people animated show like love death robots
@@hakuna_matata_hakuna anime is an art form. it's no different than a cartoon dude. manga/manhwa is just a translation for comic. enough of this gatekeeping crap. also stop talking about white ppl... racist much??
Eeeeeh, it was really mediocre. Nice animation but that's about it. It fails to set up this universe and explain it properly, just throws various characters at us that I guess people who played the games would know. Like the sick doctor guy, where was his story going? It did not lead to any good conclusion. Jinx was an idiot who after making some terrible mistakes, just right off the bat turned into ersatz Harley Quinn the next time we see her, going crazy out of nowhere. And the show never explains just... why does the high city oppress the slums? They have machines and tech so it's not like they are capitalists oppressing the workers, they literally don't need the slums. They could just as well let them separate and go their own way instead of policing and waging a war on them.
I know I'm not the first to say this but I really recommend Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Ignore the fact that it's on the CW, CxG was their broken clock moment. It's witty and well-written and the songs (it's a musical!) absolutely slap. The writers knew where they were going with it from day one and when they were offered a fifth season they turned it down because they'd told the story they wanted to tell.
Why would people watch that show? It has such a stoopid name! I don't know about you, but personally I don't watch shows with stoopid names like that! I prefer the shows I watch to have clever names; not stoopid ones like this show.
Preach, I'm delighted that it's receiving more love and recognition. As an elementary school teacher myself, the situations and characters are immensely relatable. I'm definitely a Janine, being idealistic to a fault, and determined to make a difference in the lives of my students.
The one-shot episode of The Bear is the best thing I've seen on TV on the past decade, easily. Seriously. Beyond amazing in my eyes. It's so good. So stressful, so anxiety packed and yet so f**king real and authentic to the restaurant experience. I've watched it and it was just such an experience. I love Jeremy Allen White, he's such a phenomenal actor and deserves all the praises (for both Shameless and The Bear).
Have you seen the movie Boiling Point by any chance? I really wonder how that and the episode you mentioned compare. I'll put The Bear on my to watch list in any case, so I can see for myself 😊
I haven't finished 1899 yet, but it's safe to say Dark's creators don't miss. Blood & Water is a show that really surprised me. It's about a South African teen trying to solve the mystery of her older sister, who was stolen as a baby. Season 3 just came out and it's a great watch.
Yessss I don't see many people talk about _Blood & Water_ . It's such a good show. I don't like a few characters but that don't stop it from being good imo.
I was expecting Invincible to be on here but I'm just realizing it came out last year. Thats how long we've been waiting for a Season 2. Didn't even realize 😄
it's downright criminal how little Apple TV does to promote its shows. So far I've seen 4 shows from them and every single one is an absolute banger! I forced 2 of my friends to watch severance with me just so I could have someone to discuss it with lol and they are equally excited about season 2
Agreed, I wasn't sure about the premise at first, but I'm glad that I checked it out, because I got completely sucked in by the writing, characters and execution.
The cheer I let out when Severance popped up! So many people aren't including it in their top of the year and it makes me so sad. The style, the concept, the story, the acting. Loooooooooved it!!!
the sandman and hotd are my absolute favs this year, i think they are brilliantly done, but when it comes to comfort shows, wednesday also has a place in my heart now
My toxic trait is thinking "i need to watch this right now" every time you recommend a show (because you have a great way of describing them with passion and good analysis) even though I don't watch shows at all 🤡
My favorite show of 2022 was Our Flag Means Death. It's really wholesome and funny. It starts as a workplace comedy for pirates then slowly morphs into a romantic comedy. I was really happy because it's been so long since I saw a good romantic comedy, where the romance is really cute and the comedy is gold. The two leads are Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate and Taika Waititi as Blackbeard. It's loosely based on real historic events and I was really surprised to discover the existence of Stede Bonnet because while we have all heard of Blackbeard I don't think many people know the Gentleman Pirate and he actually sailed with Blackbeard during the Pirate Golden Age. Pretty wild. Also, the show has a lot of good queer representation and has been applauded for not queerbaiting with their romantic leads. The romance starts with hints here and there, evolves and actually confirms the romance before the end of the season. I'm really excited to see the second season next year!
Literally got cold chills when I saw the word Severance appear as your #1. I so agree. I wish this show was talked about more. It makes you talk in hyperbole when you tell other people about it. Especially the buildup at the finale. It just does something different. Love it! And great list!
@@friendlyspaceninja I guarantee you Alice in Borderland is absolutely amazing. It’s quite underrated when you compare it to something similar like Squid Game. It has only 2 seasons, the final season came out a couple days ago and it ended where the manga has ended. It has one of the best endings in fiction, ever. You’ll have a blast
Thank you for mentioning Severance, I was not expecting it to be talked about at all but it was definitely the best show I watched this year and deserves so much more recognition!
I really, really enjoyed Interview with the Vampire this year. Really really dark, mostly explores the main characters really well and keeps you questioning about the truthfulness of the whole story! Can‘t wait for season 2
exactly! I will never shut up about this series. the end was such a good plot twist, and people who don't the story must be questioning everything! it did the whole unreliable narrator thing SO WELL. Daniel was also such a suprise, I never expected him to be my favourite but he was AMAZING. I'm so excited about where they take the story in season 2.
Just came here to mention IWTV. I hope he checks it out. It seems super underrated in these RUclipsr spaces but I think it's one of the top series of the year and not enough people are talking about it. It's so damn good.
I am so glad someone finally talked about Severance. This show is an absolute masterpiece. Everything is exactly perfect. It's one of the rare shows I have nothing I would improve or change. I can't wait for S2.
When you failed to mention Severance even in honorable mentions my heart dropped. Severance took a very special part in my part and it is honestly so good I thought it was a must to be in this tier list. However, I didn't expect you to put it on the first place cause I am so used to the show being overlooked and then instead of smth like Wednesday you say Severance... I just screamed out loud YESSSSS Thank you for bringing the attention this show absolutely deserves.
Antony Starr is such an underrated actor! You should watch Banshee, because he is the main character in this series and it is SO GOOD! Since this series i loved this actor and after i heard that he plays Homelander i KNEW that he will be a perfect fit for this role... My surprise of the year was FOR SURE: Wednesday and i cannot put my finger on which series was my favorite, really good shows this year IMO!
Very glad about your inclusion of Severance! It's seriously one of my favorite shows of all time and I completely agree on all the points you made. The finale was one of the best TV experiences I've ever had, every second was anxiety inducing and spectacular. More people need to watch it!
Severance genuinely caught me off guard for how just genuinely amazing it was. You're 100% correct, it is a perfect 10/10. I went into it fully expected to have a good time but I was surprised how deeply I loved this show. The execution was beautiful, the directing was amazing (who gave Ben Stiller the right to make something this phenomenal) it was such a brilliant example of story telling with such a fascinating concept. Even the opening was gorgeous. It doesn't miss. Not with the story, the acting, any of it. Every choice was just perfect. And yeah my boyfriend I were screaming at the end right along there too! I wish I could experience it for the first time all over again. I keep telling everyone who will listen to watch it 😍😍
Since you asked, here's my top ten! 1) Severance season 1 2) Our Flag Means Death season 1 3) The Sandman season 1 4) Inside no. 9 season 7 5) The Boys season 3 6) What We Do in the Shadows season 4 7) The Legend of Vox Machina season 1 8) Dead End: Paranormal Park season 1&2 9) Rick and Morty season 6 10) tie-in between Only Murders in the Building season 2 and Wednesday season 1
Oh my GOD someone else that watches Inside No 9, hi! (I mean, maybe you’re British, in which case, it’s only natural… but I’m Brazilian, so I never meet people who also watch it)
Yeah it’s a rep shock, I felt like he should’ve at least mentioned it, Better Call Saul’s finale is already being considered a landmark series finale, so he must’ve heard about it.
Its wild seeing Antony Starr go from playing Hood to playing Homlander, because you can see him using that same barely contained rage at the core of both roles, but the way he layers it under the two characters is so vastly different to get the beleaguered exhausted grey hero in Banshee, vs the egocentric entitled monster in The Boys
I adore "Heartstopper", it's so adorable, and as someone who has seen their fair share of gritty, dark teen dramas, the idealistic setting feels like a breath of fresh air. The characters all actually look like teenagers, with many of their actors being teens themselves, or close in age.
@@trinaq teen dramas are hit or miss, the older I get but I'll give it a try. Teen dramas have come a ways from my teen years/20s of Gossip Girl and House of Anubis.
Finally got to see Severance After seeing the video, I got to admit the show was good. If every episode is about 7/10 for me, the last one completely skyrockets to 15/10 all the slow burn from the previous episodes finally plays off, It was phenomenal! Totaly deserve a spot on the top shows of 2022
I think the most underrated series of the year was Interview With The Vampire on AMC+. It’s an amazingly written and directed drama / supernatural series and the lead actors Jacob Anderson who plays Louis de Pointe du Lac, Sam Reid as Lestat de Lioncourt, and Bailey Bass as Claudia deliver the absolute best performances of the year in television!
yess I've been saying this forever! best tv show of the year without question. all three of the main actors are absolutely incredible, and their characters have some of the best character development I've seen.
@a really awkward queer person same I really hope season 2 gets more recognition so that the show doesn't get cancelled, it would be a shame. Jacob Anderson is just so phenomenal, It's crazy! I haven't seen him in anything besides GoT and I must say he's so f-ing talented.
If you have any interest in watching teen shows from non-english speaking countries, I'd like to recommend you the Swedish Netflix show Young Royals, since you enjoyed Heartstopper, and also, the Norwegian teen show Skam that ran back in the late 2010s. Both shows are very down to earth and depicts teen life more realistically, though Young Royals are set an elite boarding school and has the Swedish crown prince as the main protagonist, which gives it a nice hint of gossip girl and the crown 😊
Omg yess!! I love Young Royals! it feels like a fun mix of many different teen dramas but it’s also really refreshing! The writers in the first season did an amazing job with the six episodes they had. I hear Skam is great too!
I have to say that Andor was probably my favourite show of the year! I'm more of a casual Star Wars viewer, but I absolutely loved it. The storyline, acting and ambiance (real world sets) were all superb 💚
I am so glad you've seen Severance. I watched it as it came out and it loved it so much. Very few shows have gotten me so invested that they've actually stressed me out and one of them was the final episode of Severance. I can't wait for season 2.
honestly so happy to see Pachinko on this list! i really hope you watch and review more k-dramas in the future - they're so different from american shows, i'm sure there are many that you'd like alot. for me, a ton of them completely changed my view on cinematography and storytelling.
a list of the shows if anyone's interested: 10) andor 9) abbot elementary 8) attack on titan season 4 part 2 7) pachinko 6) 1899 5) cyberpunk edgerunners 4) the boys season 3 3) the bear 2) house of the dragon special mentions: peacemaker, heartstopper, the sandman, the pacient and the drop-out 1) severance
I loved Yellowjackets too. The characters are incredible, the twists are horrifying and the story is weirdly intriguing - yet pulled off masterfully. Highly recommend. Also can't believe you didn't mention The White Lotus. This show has it all: stunning cinematography, easily the best TV show score in years, Emmy-worthy acting, murder mysteries and deep insights into class, race and wealth.
Yellowjackets? Is that like Mussolini's Brownshirts trying to reform in the 21st Century or something? Sounds stoopid. I don't think I'll watch that show. I can't stand World War II settings, so why would I want to see Mussolini's Brownshirts undercover in the 21st Century as these Yellowjackets? Sounds stoopid.
If you liked your international cast speaking different languages you can try watching “Into the Night”, it’s a show about people having to escape sunlight on a plane, and the ensemble of characters that just happened to be on that particular plane come from different parts of the world. I was so obsessed with this show!
Thank you for introducing me to Severance, watched it over the last couple of days and you did not over exaggerate one bit, I was ready to tear my blanket apart during the last two episode!
I don't know if you've watched these, but I'd highly recommend Our Flag Means Death and What We Do In The Shadows (specially this one I think has your kind of humor, it's like The Office but vampires, it's based on a movie with the same name that taika watiti directed, you don't need to watch the movie first, it's just on the same universe and it's fun to see the little cameos that the movie characters do on the show)
Lee Min-Ho from Pachinko is a popular actor here in the Philippines during the early 2010s due to the K-Dramas that are being released on TV where he starred. Sucks that the show isn't being marketed well. It would've been better if it was released on Netflix or Disney Plus.
Lee Min Ho is generally is the most popular Korean actor. He does get type cast a lot as the arrogant rich guy but I'm glad that this character is a lot more complex than any of his previous works except maybe faith. As a fan, it's really nice to see him get more complex roles and nail them! Pachinko was better than I expected. Sucks that it was not that watched due to being released on Apple Tv thouh
Very interested in seeing your reaction to the Attack on Titan ending! I read the manga, and I know the ending was very polarising with some people hating it, claiming it ruined the show, and others loving it. Looking forward to hearing your opinion :)
THANK YOU for pointing out how amazing Alicent is as a character. With so much meme-culture surrounding the show way to many people missed how brilliantly written she is and Olivia Cooke deserves WAYYY more praise!
Watching this video felt better than watching award shows I legitimately "Whoop!"-ed when Severance and The Bear got mentioned. My faves from this year. Great list! Although, I'd put the last season of Better Call Saul on there as one of my own picks for Top 10, I loved every second of that show.
Needed someone to mention bcs season 6. It's easily in my top 10 this year and concluded the entire show in a way that retroactively improved my opinion of every season. Truly one of my favourite final seasons of all time.
I really liked The Afterparty. It's a fantastically written and immaculately directed mystery show from Lord and Miller(The people who did Jump Street, The Lego Movie, and Spider-Verse). It's got a really good eye for detail and doesn't miss an opportunity to tell us something about it's characters. If only Apple TV+ actually marketed the damn thing.
i started severance after hearing about it on your podcast and at the time i was in a real slump barely being able to get through a few episodes of a show before dropping it but with severance i was completely hooked! i watched it all in one day and the ending still haunts me because of where the story is going! i cannot wait for season 2 and i really hope this show gets more recognition because it's amazing!
I’m so happy about #1!! I was waiting for it for the entire list just hoping that it made it. Excellent job as per usual, Space Ninja! Can’t wait for another year of videos 😅
Thank you for the list!! I'll add them to my watchlist. I'd strongly recommend Our Flag Means Death. It rotted my brain from the moment I saw it and I really enjoyed it 💜
House of the Dragon was amazing- I actually liked it better than Game of Thrones (except for season 1). My only wish is that they made that first season longer. It was only 10 episodes I think it could have been 12 or even made it into 2 seasons because I loved all the characters and would have liked more time with them before they grew up or died lol
Was happy to see Severence on the list. It was such a great watch but no one I know outside my own family has seen it, which means I have no one to nerd out about it with! So, I’m glad to see it get a spotlight. Would recommend watching Arcane if you have not seen it yet.
Thing with 1899 is its simply season 1, very few ppl would have put Dark on a pedestal we do now after just the 1st season, the most mind-blowing episodes are in later seasons Will 1899 be as good as Dark? Chances are no, but I'd also say chances are it will get even better (than season 1 is*)
That's on my watchlist. I added it before it released and kept meaning to watch it. I might watch it closer to whenever a season 2 starts but Netflix is iffy about which shows get another season
Thank you for the list, I'll definitely be watching some of this stuff, I only wish you'd mention Succession, it's an insanely good show and more people should watch it. i really can't recommend it enough.
@jules it has butch rep?? omg I'm gonna have to check this out, I've never seen butch rep like ever. The sex lives of college girls is also rlly good if you want lesbian characters
My favourite show of the year is “Half Bad: The Bastard Son and The Devil Himself”. It's a fantastic magical, supernatural witch series with a good dose of gore, but the gore has its place and isn't just there for gore's sake. The series deals with a war being waged between two different witch communities: The Fairborn Withes vs The Blood Witches. Our main character, Nathan Byrne, is caught in the middle of this due to his heritage - half Fairborn on his mother's side and being half Blood on his father's. To add fuel to the fire his father, Marcus Edge, is the “World's Most Dangerous Blood Witch” and because of it, The Council of Fairborn Witches has been monitoring him for the first 16 years of his life out of fear he'd turn out like his father. There is a lot of commentary that can be gleaned from this series, due to the MC's race, gender, and sexuality and how that conflates with violence. As well as the idea of propaganda, the idea that history is told from the POV of the victors, and the twisted nature of politics and war. From what I've heard, this series also had an intimacy coordinator, which shows how the characters interact with each other and how touch is shown. Sadly, this series got very little to no promo as well and was cancelled after only one season, and even counting this I still can't recommend this show enough. The show contains excellent acting, good pacing, fitting music, and writing that doesn't insult the intelligence of those watching. The writing has faith in the audience to be able to piece everything together. Just know that its targeted demographic is teenagers, but for a teenage supernatural drama, it excels on every front. I love it so much, that I started reading the books just after I finished binging the show. I really hope you check it out and also Happy Holidays!
I absolutely love Dark, so much so that I was prepared to be disappointed by 1889. I was not disappointed at all. It does not reaches Dark levels yet, but it definitely has the potential.
10. Star Wars: Andor - 1:52 9. Abott Elementary - 5:20 8. Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 - 6:59 7. Pachinko - 10:07 6. 1899 - 11:59 5. Cyberpunk Edgerunners - 16:36 4. The Boys Season 3 - 18:27 3. The Bear - 22:12 2. Games of Thrones: House of the Dragon - 24:14 H.M. - 28:14 1. Severance - 29:30
If it's not already on your watchlist I highly recommend Bad Sisters, it's incredible, filled with great character, depth and dark humor. Also AMC Interview with the vampire was incredibly good! Nice to see Andor on the list!
I watched most shows on here and I gotta say we got a great year for shows but Cuberpunk Edgeruners absolutely took the top spot for me, so many things about that show was perfect and episode 6 I dare say is not just one of the greatest episodes of animation but of television history
To my great surprise, my favorite show this year was Andor. I never thought a show about a character from Rogue One would be the Star Wars show I’ve always wanted but here we are. And I can’t wait for season 2.
Would recommend This Is Going To Hurt, a show I’ve not seen a lot of people outside the UK talk about. A dark comedy starring Ben Whishaw and based of the diaries of an ex junior doctor in the NHS, it doesn’t skimp on the reality of treating people in a hospital and the strain working in one puts on its doctors x
23:21 finally some discussion on the bear, it is so refreshing to see such a realistic take on restaurant life and the life of those who work in them, as a young chef in Italy it’s also so surprising how the similarities are, the parallels are amazing
Just finished watching Severence after watching your video and holy shit that was a absolute masterpiece of a first season. I can’t wait to see what happens in season 2.
probably my personal favorites this year were The Sandman, Koisenu Futari, Heartstopper, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and Our Flag Means Death, but I did not watch very many new shows. Top 10 lists just go on my watchlist.
Severance was my #2 favorite show of 2022 but my #1 was For All Mankind. Season 1 of FAM was good but still finding its footing; season 2 improved by leaps and bounds and its finale was one of the best finales I've ever seen; and season 3 this year was just masterful. The details of this alternate version of history are incredible. I could have done without the Stevens brothers plotlines but this was still appointment television for me, and the scene where two main characters wrestle each other onto the Mars surface gave me a big laugh in July when I was cooped up with Covid!
Severance sounds so interesting! Got to find the headspace to watch it. My list would have Our Flag Means Death near the top. I haven't actually watched a lot of new stuff, been too busy catching up on things I missed. Doom Patrol season 4 is starting to look wild, even for Doom Patrol. I'm a sucker for Criminal Minds, and I've been glad to see it resurrected. Loved The Sandman!
You have give me a lot of shows to put in my watchlist, but if you havent seen Better Call Saul I really think is one of the best shows of all time. Its my favorite of the year and I really recommend it to you. : )
I hope one day we can get a video on Avatar 1 and 2, since the second one came not so long ago, I would love to hear your take on both movies. Heartstopper,Attack on titan and House of the dragon were my personal favorite.💝
Some of my favorite Tv-Shows of the year that didn’t get mentioned in this video: Interview With the Vampire, Our Flag Means Death and The Legend of Vox Machina. Highly recommend those!
it's funny cause we have the same opinion about house of the dragon and the sandman but reversed, house of the dragon was good but I felt like there were a lot of issues and I thought the sandman was brilliant. Also another good show this year was interview with the vampire, that one took me by surprise as well, I didn't expect such amazing performances from it.
This might be just my opinion but I really think tv shows overshadowed the the movies this year in terms of quality edit: the new profile picture is adorable
As somebody who works in a small restaurant very similar to the one in The Bear (East Coast pizza place as opposed to Chicago sandwich shop, but very similar), I have never felt more seen by a writer’s room. They perfectly captured the hellish grind of working in a place like that. There’s a fucking Hobart dough mixer in the background of a few shots that we literally have at my work. It speaks to me.
Besides the Bear and Abbott Elementary; Station Eleven and Mind over Murder, where phenomenal, they were two of my favorite that you didn't mention. And I also loved Only Murders in the Building, I know it is not the best produced show, but I still find comfort in it, I love the characters and it's always fun to find out who was the killer. Severance, Pachinko and 1899, are still on my watchlist, I can't wait to watch them.
I absolutely love that the characters in 1899 have to communicate while speaking different languages. The scene between Anker and Ramiro was an example of it done well. It was such an emotional conversation expressed through just pure empathy. Neither could understand each other’s words but Anker’s pain is so evident in how he was expressing himself and Ramiro offered him comfort. Anker didn’t know what he said but understood his intent. It’s brilliant.
Thank you for the list and recommendations! I highly recommend watching The English. It is a slowburn 6-episode western mini-series with stellar performances by Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer. The story is a usual revenge plot with some twists set in the late 19th century. It is very-well written, the production quality is topnotch and it has that classic (spaghetti) western movie vibe. It is easily one of my favourites of 2022.
1.Attack On Titan season 4 part 2 2. Better Call Saul S6 (P1>P2) 3. Severance 4. Andor 5. House of the dragon 6. Barry S3 7. Peaky blinders S6 8. Mob pshyco 100 final season 9. Stranger things S4 10. Chainsaw man ;)
A show I discovered this year and just recently had its 3rd season is Ramy on Hulu. It’s about a first-generation Egyptian American man who is trying to be a better Muslim but his faith and culture clashes with the world he is trying to navigate. I know the term “coming of age” is usually reserved for teenagers but that’s essentially what this show is. Ramy makes bad decision after bad decision and just ends up digging himself in even deeper by trying to be a better person. The show was created and is written and directed by Ramy Yousef, who also plays the main character, and I’m in awe of his ability to balance humor and drama with difficult topics. The show does cover heavy subject matter but it also manages to be so hilarious, and the layers of every character are slowly peeled back with each episode. It also portrays Egyptian and Muslim culture very well (obviously because that’s what Ramy grew up in) and every episode features characters speaking in Arabic. It breaks stereotypes but not in a “we’re teaching white people that Arabs are just like them!” kind of way, it’s just completely natural and authentic.
I watched Severence because of the #1 rank you gave it and it did not disappoint. I watched the first half one weekend and would say it was kinda slow but still impactful. Throughout the week I kept on thinking about the series. I had homework so I could finish it until the next weekend. And the ending left me craving more. The next day I had work and told all my coworkers about it which is kinda perfectly ironic. Overall what a great watch. If your looking for another Apple series that keeps you entranced like this did to me I recommend Bad Sisters
I'm surprised you either didn't like or wasn't excited by Our Flag Means Death. No worries if it's not your thing but if it's not on your radar for whatever reason I think it's worth a shot. I LOVE the Bear. I was not expecting to watch it in two days but I did. I also think that though both seasons go hand in hand, White Lotus season 2 was pretty great. The scenes with Aubrey Plaza and the characters surrounding her are just super tense and amazing. Season one got a little stale for me, but the second season was wild. I would be interested to see where you land on that show.
They cancel show based on numbers, if not many people are watching it, and if critics dont like it then they cancel it
@@Nirax3 About generating buzz for a show: The way Netflix usually releases shows, all episodes of a season all at once, has been shown to generate LESS buzz for a show, than releasing the episodes one at a time once a week (like HBO does).
I'm yet to watch it, but glad you like it :)
This video inspired me to watch the first episode of dark! And I don't understand anything despite understanding the language!
Derry Girls has been on my list for a while now! I cannot wait to watch it!
It’s soooooo good
@@friendlyspaceninja Coolness, I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it! The strong accents might be hard to get used to at first, but they definitely grow on you as the show progresses. 😍❣️
I love that show so much!
My husband n I watched the whole series twice n I usually never do so. I loved it so much.
Didn't you like it wanted to replicate the mysteries of Dark? I didn't enjoy it as much 😕 maybe it'll get better by the second season.
They need to give Antony Starr his Emmy and quit playing.
I thought his season 3 version was quite dumbed down and over the top though. Feels like the character doesn’t really have much to offer now. I do think I feel that way because of how massively fascinated I was with his creepy relationship with the CEO in season 1, and how disappointed I was that they killed her off
@@mariannestrgzr9374 I don’t even want to know what Ryan is gonna become under his influence
it’s insane how inhuman they make Anthony Starr look 😭😭
He's giving Tom Cruise vibes ☠️☠️
During a scene in season 2 where he was smiling I hid the lower part of his face and his eyes were scaring me 🤣🤣
It is so annoying to see 1899 getting cancelled.
Last of Us is 2023
@@buythewaybytheotherway5467 oh damn you right you right my b. I still stand by Wednesday and Only Murders tho

highly recommend Arcane! it’s an amazing show with incredible storytelling and some of the most compelling characters written.
arcane was 2021 :,)
only gripe i have withj arcane is the anime label, whitye people please stop trying to make anime it dilutes the medium and blurs the lines between love death robots , pixar animations and anime itself. hated cyberpunk for that almost hated arcane for the same but turns outit wasn't actually anime just another great white people animated show like love death robots
@@hakuna_matata_hakuna I've never heard it described as an anime
One of my favourite shows ever. I must have watched it 3 times back to back

That episode brought back allll the chaotic stressful memories working on the line of a restaurant. The best and worst memories

SAME 😭😭
My favorite show of 2022 was Our Flag Means Death.
I'm shocked it didn'tget an honourable mention!

I'd like to add Our Flag Means Death to the list, at least as one of the honorable mentions.
yes!! I loved it
oh yeah it's #1 in my list
Thank you for including Severance in the list. This is a really great show that deserves more attention.
I have to say that Andor was probably my favourite show of the year! I'm more of a casual Star Wars viewer, but I absolutely loved it. The storyline, acting and ambiance (real world sets) were all superb 💚
The best show!!!
"We cannot wait for season 2"
Ouch :(
I am so glad you've seen Severance. I watched it as it came out and it loved it so much. Very few shows have gotten me so invested that they've actually stressed me out and one of them was the final episode of Severance. I can't wait for season 2.
honestly so happy to see Pachinko on this list!
i really hope you watch and review more k-dramas in the future - they're so different from american shows, i'm sure there are many that you'd like alot.
for me, a ton of them completely changed my view on cinematography and storytelling.
which are your favorite k-dramas or movies??
Can’t wait to hear your take on The White Lotus! I just finished season 2 today, it was amazing!
right? So good!
a list of the shows if anyone's interested:
10) andor
9) abbot elementary
8) attack on titan season 4 part 2
7) pachinko
6) 1899
5) cyberpunk edgerunners
4) the boys season 3
3) the bear
2) house of the dragon
special mentions: peacemaker, heartstopper, the sandman, the pacient and the drop-out
1) severance
I loved Yellowjackets too. The characters are incredible, the twists are horrifying and the story is weirdly intriguing - yet pulled off masterfully. Highly recommend. Also can't believe you didn't mention The White Lotus. This show has it all: stunning cinematography, easily the best TV show score in years, Emmy-worthy acting, murder mysteries and deep insights into class, race and wealth.
+1 for Yellowjackets
Brilliant show
Yellowjackets is a great show
He said he hadn't watched it yet. But yes +1 for Yellowjackets though I THINK that came out 2021
Yellowjackets?
So happy to see Andor on this list it doesn’t get the love it deserves 💯
Thank you for introducing me to Severance, watched it over the last couple of days and you did not over exaggerate one bit, I was ready to tear my blanket apart during the last two episode!
I don't know if you've watched these, but I'd highly recommend Our Flag Means Death and What We Do In The Shadows (specially this one I think has your kind of humor, it's like The Office but vampires, it's based on a movie with the same name that taika watiti directed, you don't need to watch the movie first, it's just on the same universe and it's fun to see the little cameos that the movie characters do on the show)
So happy you mentioned Severance! Wish more people watched it. The finale was so satisfying in a way I never expected.
@@AnveshaTrip to be fair "arrogant rich guy" are like 80% of K-drama male roles
Netflix would have cancelled it a week after it aired. Apple gives shows a good chance at least.
Very interested in seeing your reaction to the Attack on Titan ending! I read the manga, and I know the ending was very polarising with some people hating it, claiming it ruined the show, and others loving it. Looking forward to hearing your opinion :)
The Severance cliffhanger… my god I was SHOOK!! I was so upset it was snubbed during awards season but I’m glad ppl are talking about it now
THANK YOU for pointing out how amazing Alicent is as a character. With so much meme-culture surrounding the show way to many people missed how brilliantly written she is and Olivia Cooke deserves WAYYY more praise!
do not exaggerate
Watching this video felt better than watching award shows I legitimately "Whoop!"-ed when Severance and The Bear got mentioned. My faves from this year. Great list! Although, I'd put the last season of Better Call Saul on there as one of my own picks for Top 10, I loved every second of that show.
Needed someone to mention bcs season 6. It's easily in my top 10 this year and concluded the entire show in a way that retroactively improved my opinion of every season. Truly one of my favourite final seasons of all time.
100% only show im suprised wasnt on the list
It rotted my brain from the moment I saw it and I really enjoyed it 💜
Did not expect better call Saul to be left out like that.
What about watching it if I never saw GOT, and know none of that groundwork?
it was just a season, that's a phase
@@edgedg this is the prequel so you are good to go!
Was happy to see Severence on the list. It was such a great watch but no one I know outside my own family has seen it, which means I have no one to nerd out about it with! So, I’m glad to see it get a spotlight.
Would recommend watching Arcane if you have not seen it yet.
Thing with 1899 is its simply season 1, very few ppl would have put Dark on a pedestal we do now after just the 1st season, the most mind-blowing episodes are in later seasons
Will 1899 be as good as Dark? Chances are no, but I'd also say chances are it will get even better (than season 1 is*)
That's on my watchlist. I added it before it released and kept meaning to watch it. I might watch it closer to whenever a season 2 starts but Netflix is iffy about which shows get another season
This! I think it will be better than Dark.
The problem is that is a steal from a brazilian comic
@@Rafaelrpaese which comic is that?
@@Rafaelrpaese than sue them and prove it to the world
Thank you for the list, I'll definitely be watching some of this stuff, I only wish you'd mention Succession, it's an insanely good show and more people should watch it. i really can't recommend it enough.
My favourite shows this year were Our Flag Means Death, Heartstopper and A League of Their Own! Such good shows
yess, Our flag means death was so fucking funny, I loved it. easily one of the best show of 2022
a league of their own blew me away it was so good 😭 i’d never seen historically accurate lesbian and especially butch lesbian rep ever
@jules it has butch rep?? omg I'm gonna have to check this out, I've never seen butch rep like ever. The sex lives of college girls is also rlly good if you want lesbian characters
Same here! Our flag means death absolutely blew it out of the park, absolutely hilarious and heart felt 😭💖👌👌👌
@@artemis1796 yes!! you’ve got to watch it!
10. Star Wars: Andor - 1:52
9. Abott Elementary - 5:20
8. Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 - 6:59
7. Pachinko - 10:07
6. 1899 - 11:59
5. Cyberpunk Edgerunners - 16:36
4. The Boys Season 3 - 18:27
3. The Bear - 22:12
2. Games of Thrones: House of the Dragon - 24:14
H.M. - 28:14
1. Severance - 29:30
If it's not already on your watchlist I highly recommend Bad Sisters, it's incredible, filled with great character, depth and dark humor. Also AMC Interview with the vampire was incredibly good! Nice to see Andor on the list!
I also loved Bad Sisters. :)
Bad Sisters is phenomenal and absolutely hilarious!
Top 10 lists just go on my watchlist.
i love the mysterious benedict society! it's so sweet!
100% season 6 was a masterpiece up their with all the best seasons of television of all time.
Pachinko Is Awesome one of the best K drama's I've ever watched. Lee Minho is an amazing actor.
I’m so so so glad you put Severance at number one. I can’t hype it enough. It’s a masterpiece.
A show that nobody watched that is amazing (specially the season that aired this year) is His Dark Materials. It's really something else.
yes!!
Yess I adore his Dark Materials!!! I was a huge fan of the books when I was younger and the show in general did a great job at adapting it
Yes! I really hope he will do a video on it. It’s an amazing adaptation of a great book trilogy.
it's funny cause we have the same opinion about house of the dragon and the sandman but reversed, house of the dragon was good but I felt like there were a lot of issues and I thought the sandman was brilliant. Also another good show this year was interview with the vampire, that one took me by surprise as well, I didn't expect such amazing performances from it.
This might be just my opinion but I really think tv shows overshadowed the the movies this year in terms of quality
edit: the new profile picture is adorable
+1 for Station Eleven!
1.Attack On Titan season 4 part 2
2. Better Call Saul S6 (P1>P2)
3. Severance
4. Andor
5. House of the dragon
6. Barry S3
7. Peaky blinders S6
8. Mob pshyco 100 final season
9. Stranger things S4
10. Chainsaw man
;)
I've never heard of this show, but in a few sentences you convinced me to give it a watch immediately. ❤ Thank you
Netflix just canceled 1899 I’m gonna throw up
I watched Severence because of the #1 rank you gave it and it did not disappoint.
Really happy you mentioned Pachinko, it needs the attention it deserves.
House of the dragon was so good, it got me into the whole game of thrones franchise
