OH MY GOSSHHHH who knew this was coming!? Here are all my thoughts on the new Saw fillm.
    *Apologies for the focus!
I was using a new mount to fix my awful car angles and it messed with my autofocus.
Or maybe I was just trying to give you 2000s vibes????
I would rerecord but wanted to use my actual reaction, hoping this just adds to the authenticity. Hopefully, you aren’t watching me on TV. I’ll fix this for next time - Quiet Place 2 !

Lmao the shifty eyes had me dying the entire time. I thought this movie was awk af, but I went into it with such low expectations that I couldn’t help but be amused. It was predictable and simple- but somehow still confusing all at the same time. I thought this movie was “fine.” But it’s def toward the bottom of my personal list of Saw movies. Great vid!

I think that the killer's motivations and chosen targets strikes a different chord for American audiences, since that's a very hot issue out here. Despite the cliches, I think Spiral benefited from not being cluttered with all the interconnected mystery of the main series that went nowhere. And I REALLY liked the ending.

Thanks very much for the review, Emma. I appreciate you giving us your thoughts, even if our expectations get lowered. I'll check out the film when it hits DVD rental, which is how I think I have seen all the Saw films. I rented "Jigsaw" recently to refresh my memory on the last film's ending, but I take it that Spiral is more of a stand-alone story.
I was under the impression that the first "Saw" was made in Australia. Not only did we have the horror team of James Wan & Leigh Whannel, but Cary Elwes starred in the film as well. You learn something new every day.

Plus, Darren Lynn Bousman has also tried his hand at directing horror anthology TV with "Fear Itself", a 13-episode horror anthology where each famous horror director got their shot at directing an episode.
Think "Masters of Horror", but for network TV and JUST toeing the line between TV-14 and TV-MA.
Bousman directed the episode "New Year's Day", which had names like the late Cory Monteith (may he rest in peace) and J. LaRose (already a Bousman contemporary, being in both "Saw III" and "Repo!").
Oh, and featured the music of Charlie Clouser, who is also a contemporary of Bousman, scoring ALL the "Saw" films to date.

As someone that deeply enjoyed 2017’s Jigsaw and what it brought to the table with the franchise, I can confidently say this is the better “jumping on” point of the series. It doesn’t give away a whole bunch of crucial information about the prior 8 entries either than who the main antagonist was and that he’s dead.
Chris Rock genuinely surprised me in the film. Going off of the recent season of Fargo, he did a pretty decent job in there so it was refreshing to see someone like him exploring a different tone with a horror setting. I found his character of Zeke Banks to be one of the better Saw protagonists we’ve gotten in a while. Most of the other actors (Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, etc.) also did a pretty good job with what they’re given.
Overall, this was a decent watch for the series. Not the absolute best the franchise has to offer, but definitely watchable than most other entries.
    My score - 7.9 or 8.1 / 10

  • @robertr798
    @robertr798 3 года назад +1

You’re so right. I was hoping that with the change of title, bigger budget, and the unexpected casting of Rock and Jackson, this would somehow transcend the Saw movies... but this IS just another Saw movie, with all of the same issues.
And yes, shifty eyes was a thing. We know because, as you said, Bousman is obsessed with close-ups. 🙄

The only problems I had was that the traps were way too tame, how long have they been doing these movies for? I think they could have come up with better ideas for those scenes. It seemed to get a bit lost in the middle and was getting too confusing with the direction the film was going although I do have to say I was very impressed by the end and it could have been a lot worse, that's just my thoughts though, I thought it was a 6.5-7/10 but at the same time, I completely understand why some would give it a 4-5/10.

Chris Rock and Sam Jackson playing themselves ended up being the best part of this mess of a movie. Fresh personality? I’ll take it. But then, what’s up with all the yelling? Like THE WHOLE TIME!
That said, this is a perfect review. Bummer. I had super high hopes for Spiral.
    Fun review, fun energy!

I'm seeing it this Friday! I'm actually excited for this, it's been my most anticipated horror film alongside Halloween Kills. Chris Rock is a fan of the series so I sorta have faith that this'll be good not to mention Darren Lynn Bousman is back, but let's see how it goes.

No offense but when Dean made a goofy face at the beginning of the video he looked like a fuzzy from Super Mario World! It's all I can think about now haha

Nice review. I am cautiously optimistic about seeing this one. When you first heard it was a Chris Rock project, I was, "say what now?". I love a good crime thriller, mystery though.

flashbacks work if the film is meant to feel anthological, like the first saw film. I also hate an over dependence on close ups. The wide angle shot when arriving at a scene is known as an establishing shot and is an absolute staple of creating narrative space - also, if you're paying a DoP, use them!!! Hehehe.
