- The Tenere is perhaps one of the most under rated big bore adv bike. You can find them heavily discounted, and the reason? Journalists have bashed it so much that resale has taken a tumble. Perhaps the best used adv bike on the market with a shaft drive to boot.

I live on a farm in South Africa. I ride about 80 % of the time off road. Hand guards help keep the branches off the hands in thick bush. Nothing on the Supe10 is purely for looks. It has been designed as an all rounder. Most of the guys I ride with also ride in the dirt. Dont knock it till you try it.

@@ryanpurvis5966 Not really sure where the Midlands are, but last year travelled from my home to Ballito, using back roads through Piet Retief, Vryheid, Melmoth, Eshowe etc. I actually made some vids about that trip. Was done on my previous XT660R, before I bought my XT1200Z.
I’d say there’s at least 10kg of pure cosmetics on that bike.

I went to a dealer looking to trade my Panigale on a GS. Then I found a super ten brand new for less than 1/2 the price. Insurance was also cheaper. With the cost savings I managed to keep both bikes!I left the dealer straight to a mountain pass where I had seen only dirt and dual sport bikes before. I love my superten, it takes me everywhere with confidence, speed, comfort and never broke on me. Sure its big and heavy, but thats what makes it good on road. After I put shinko 805 tires I take it to places even the dual sporters hesitate. Don't overthink, just get one and go have fun!
I bought one in 2011. One of the very first in the market. I did everything with it, off road, on road turning all over Europe in every corner. Raced it against any on off bike on the road today. I put a power commander V, a racing filter and a Yoshimura exhaust. This bike is going like new! Unbelievable! It is a tank on 2 wheels. No issues at all. Only one battery changed so far (I am using an Optimate III battery conditioner) oil motorex 10-50W, oil filters Yamaha original every 6k kilometers.
I think it is a much better buy then the GS. In Edmonton Canada the BMW GS adventure is $31,000 out the door with panniers while I just bought a 2019 Yamaha Super Tenere ES for $18,000 out the door price. I can get 500 km or 310 miles out of a tank on the highway. I'm 6ft with a 34' inseam and I can flat foot the bike no problem. My previous bike was a 2014 Vstrom 1000. The Tenere is very comfortable, the electronics work great and are easy to use (I love the Electronic Suspension), you get Yamaha reliability and it's a great value for the money. Ride safe

The Super Tenere is hands down to me both better on road and off road.
I have 22,000km on my Tenere in 4.5 months of owning it. Approx 20,000km on road and 2,000km off road.
All my riding has been with Michelin Pilot Road Trail tires.
I will be putting Shinko E804/805 tires on in June and doing more off roading with it.
The Tenere carves the twisties like a sport bike, tours like a big bagger and is great off road.
It really is the best of the 13 bikes I've owned

I have done a BMW off road riding course on the Tenere.
With the bags off I ride gravel roads, single track, water crossings, driven over branches and logs (you need a proper skid plate first), thru fields to get to camping spots.
The bike will do anything your skill level will allow.
You will likely run out of ability before the bike.
Ride safe.
I own both a 2018 R1200 GSA and a 2015 S10 ES. I love both bikes. Hard for me to say which one I'd rather keep if I could only have one. The BMW has more features but on an adventure bike all I care about is ABS, cruise control, and EFI. If I was doing a world-wide adventure tour, the S10 would be the one I'd use. There's another video of an S10 owner that gave up his R1200 GSA for the S10. He has no regrets so far and don't think I would either.
I live on a farm with a gravel road to town for 10kms. In 3 years of ownership I've never had a an issue with my Super 10, they breeze over the dirt with Shinko 705 tyres.

Man, ANYTHING is better than BMWs. I am 65 and since I was 17, rode Yamahas or Hondas. In 2004 I bought a R1150RT brand new. At the moment it is doing 68,000kms. Oh ! All kinds of things went bad. Fuel pump, ABS module, water in headlight from day 1, twice broken muffler bracket, crumbling wire looms, fell out taillight ending crushed by the rear wheel, very clunky gearbox (tractor-trailer drivers hear when you change gears !) and more. I hardly ride it anymore. POS as far as I am concerned.
In my experience with bikes and cars..............There is NOTHING comparable with the Japanese machine ! Trinidad & Tobago.

Yes, we ride this bike in the woods, on trails, gravel, sand, rocks - you name it))) With stock handguards. And it's actually Super tenere 1200 and not a simple tenere. The old generation has some little flows but in general it's a very capable and reliable.
These guys who whine about the Super Tenere being heavy in the comments crack me up! Ride an Indian or Harley then get on this bike!

I have one of these and I can tell you, if you install an ABS killswitch, it is a very capable off road bike...yes I have dropped it as well and although it is heavy, it has surprisingly good leverage when picking up.
To the critique points you mention in the video about cable lengths and dash buttons. You have the DP01 pre 2014...DP04 post 2014 have a different dash and the menu buttons are on the left handle...not to the cable lengths...Yamaha did this so you can install risers without having to extend cables - at least from DP04 onwards.
It is a very very reliable and capable bike. 👍🏼 I love it!
I get around 250 miles, and sometimes more if I ride well on the open road, on a tank of gas. It does have ABS. Adjust your lights. They are actually very effective. You get around 40 miles on reserve

I love the analog tach. If I cant get a large uncluttered color TFT then analog dials work great because you can read them at a glance through your peripheral vision. The Ten is one of the few bikes I can deal with since I'm older and my knees cant tolerate much bending over long periods and it's not too tall.
Reliable, capable,practical,affordable,and aesthetically pleasing.It doesn't get any better than the Super Tenere.👍👍

I don't think your battery is shot- that is the way they start, though I understand a larger battery will fit. You should have mentioned the model year- you are reviewing an older version of the bike. And your math is off about the range. But you are right about the value and reliability.

I'm about to own a new one from the dealer, I was comparing all out the market and after too much research even with its gaps the super tenere still is the most reliable bike, I don't mind about fancy electronics rather I prefer reliability and simplicity, also I have been Yamaha guy so maybe I'm falling into confirmation bias but yes I feel confident about my buy instead of the GS which is great but I don't trust them as much as yamaha
I've see people taking this bike on dirtbike tougher tracks or trails it do good but big adventure bikes aren't for trails because they are heavy which makes it hard to control but if the trail comes it can do good
A touring bike? Not going in the woods with it? This thing is a beast offroad!!! Super reliable as well. Most under rated bike of the last 10 years.....
Tenere is one of the best motorcycle that Yamaha has ever built. Not great at anything but good at everything !
I take my S10 off-road. Not single track, but fire roads and sometimes even more aggressive mountains and it kicks ass.
Take Yamaha XT1200 Super Tenére over any other brand for:
1) Proven reliability.
2) Plenty of power. Economic @ 45mpg.
3) Great range for the back country.
4) Well priced.
5) Loaded with great features like speed control & other electronic features..
6) Tubeless.. Puncture... Plug & inflate.. Off you go.
7) Awesome adjustable suspension.
8) Easy to accessorize.
9) Shaft drive! No pain in the ass chain.
10) Most comfortable bike I've owned.
You cannot make a mistake buying this bike, albeit that BMW & KTM are the darlings of the media.
But super tenere is low power
@@yuhznosakhalinsk7331 truthfully it has more power than I need and I weigh 100kg. Down side of higher horsepower is chewed up chains, sprockets(GS shaft like Tenére) and tyres.
PS I built my own free flow can from components off Ebay. Feels like around 10 - 15 more hp. 👍
Agree on all your points…. KTM and especially BMW have great media relations… as u mentioned they are the darlings of all reviewers. Honestly, how much power is truly needed. As soon as someone comes out with a 500 hp bike, all lower hp bikes will be “underpowered”… never ending slippery slope…
@@paulvanreenen6986 I’m also 220lbs, 6 feet tall, and have taken my ‘17 S10 from Colorado to Key West and back with 100+ pounds of gear strapped on, and never hit any limit on power or had a problem with passing cars going 90+ mph. And riding up the Rockies off-road I always have way more power than I could ever need. This bike isn’t anything close to “low power.”
Fabulous bike i owned 1 for 4 yrs and miss it i got over 200miles to the tank no bother sometimes 240 that was cruising around smaller roads like any bike if you hit the highway or motorway and sit at 90mph your gonna drink fuel big time.
I love it but i do agree the battery is a bit weak.. anyone have any suggestions for an alternate battery?
Never have heard of one NOT starting. So it just needs to be ridden. Like all nikee/cars etc.. When all you do is sit, start, stop start stop... Any battery will take a toll. So when you have to replace your battery in any automobile way before it's time, is because you have turned into a gripe session or a grocery getter, like most people we all know riding 10 to 20 minutes 30 times a month is not a good idea to instill in longevity of a battery.
Im going to disagree with you on not taking it offroad. This bike is a beast offroad.
The hand guards are not meant to be Bark Busters, but they do provide protection from the wind and rain.
IMO, a 19" wheel is the perfect compromise for an ADV bike. 21" is better suited for dual purpose, and a 17" is not very capable off-road. 19" is the perfect balance.

Handguards are great in rain... And suck on the hottest day of summer. Apart from any crash protection etc.
Now that the T700 is out, what are your thoughts? I'm on the fence between the two. Help?!
Everyone is getting the T700. I'd get the 700 because it's a much more flexible bike, you can do some good offroad riding and 700cc isn't small. Get the Super Tenere if you want stack thousands of miles and have a shaft drive that won't break.

For me it's all about getting a good deal. If I bought new I'd have more of a choice.

In September 2011 I bought "Fat Bastard II" brand new and I still have it. It has covered 70 000 problem-free km and is good for much, much more.
Ave fuel consumption varies between 18 - 20 km/ l, with a caring right wrist. But I have experienced 13.5 km/l, sitting at 5 500 rpm in top, into a head wind, for a distance of 400 km (with panniers fitted). Tank holds 23 litres - you do the sums.
The ST was the first adventure bike, fitted with ABS that actually WORKS ON OFF-ROAD SURFACES. This system has saved my ass on a few occasions already.
No, with "only" 112 bhp and a lack of modern instrumentation (tft screen), the ST falls short against more modern competition. However, on the gravel, all have the same power and in this aspect the ST does not stand back for anything else.
In nearly 10 years of ownership I have come to experience absolute reliability, economical maintainance costs, superb comfort over long distances (even with two up) and superb off-road capabilities.
What more do I need?
Oh, and the battery is still the original one that the bike came with. And so are the brake pads, front and rear.
How deep in water it can travel if we need to cross any water streem or flooded road not to dangerous life threatening in pakstan northrn areas their is most of time we need to go throug water streems clear water but cant imagine how deep it is
The air intake is about the height of the seat. You also have to be careful not to have water splashing or flowing up on top of engine. The plugs area will fill with water and mess up the electrical. I wouldn't go in water over the top of the front wheel.
I was just riding my ‘17 S10 yesterday in the Rockies here in Colorado through very deep water holes. The water was above the front tire a lot, but the bike never even slowed down. I was going through water three feet deep.

I agree, I did the 2020 Loose nut on my 2018 ST. on day two of the loose nut we did the TAT and I did the entire day of TAT without any go-arounds

260kg WET! -23L/kg fuel and around 3L/kg oil and like 1-2kg/l coolant… dry weight should be around the 230kg mark

I have owned my Super Tenere since 2013 new. . I have had to do a couple of repairs. Reply to me if your bike turns over and doesn't start. I can save you hours of trouble shooting.

I agree with you. He does not even know that it has ABS. My S10 has 220 000km on it and we ride everywhere in Africa with it. Maybe he should ride it for 30 000km on and offroad and then do a review

I have a 2016 Tenere and have dropped it, off road, in CO, UT, SD, AL, and NC without damaging the handguards. I've smashed trees and dropped it on rock without issue. It's not predominantly a touring bike! The Tenere is very capable and it's Caveman simple.

I stopped watching the moment he mentioned not taking it off-road. I was just riding my ‘17 S10, with hard panniers fully loaded, up in the Rockies through nearly 3 feet deep water/mud holes yesterday afternoon. I’m also 220lbs, and this bike is an absolute BEAST off-road. There’s not one trail I’ve been on here in Colorado, or in Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Texas that this bike hasn’t handled like it was nothing.
I turned mine into a dirtbike and take it offroad regularly. I trashed the rear final drive on it, rebuilt it and bought a used spare on ebay for $200. Try that with a BMW.
How’d you trash the final drive?
I ride a ‘17 S10 and getting into some gnarly trails here in Colorado this summer, and would like to keep from messing up my final drive if possible.

@@dropkickirish4449 Also, keep an eye on those cheap rubber plugs inside the swingarm. If they fall out mud and debris can sit inside on the driveshaft and eat away at the seal while rotating.

GS is a road bike on weekend only...but Harley does that far better. Never take GS to full adventure trip...NEVER! You will be stranded in the middle of nowhere. Ducati...even worse (My business partner's Multistrada gave up in the middle of Death Valley trip...he was lucky that other members of group pulled him out). KTM is getting a bit better. But none comes even close to Yamaha, Honda, and Suzuki's adventure bike reliability (I'm talking about above 1000CC).
lol nobody will take this bike offroad?? The Super T12 was built to go wherever you desire. Its the most reliable and to my eyes 10 times better than a GS since its a yamaha and not a unreliable with no repair center bmw. You can find a yamaha repair center in the middle of the jungle. Check out this video if you want to see if you cant take a T12 offroad. Its all about skill my friend

Why do we talk about how BIG this bike is and say it won’t be an off-road bike, yet the GS is an absolute pig and everyone takes that off-road. This video has a lot of stupid comments. Moving on.

Oh wow. Why all the whining. It's not in the shop like a BMW, HARLEY, KTM (KEEP THE MECHANIC).. Also 55.5 mpg and you aren't getting 200 miles. That's because you sit and start and stop start and stop sitting and whine about an amazing bike. I have an 06 Venture and it get 34 mpg and I'm happy. So stop sitting and whining about your bike that won't break down, carries anything anywhere and just stop go ride and enjoy it.
