Hi All, I'm currently based in China. I have been on a hunt for a second hand bike to travel across China and Tibet. Chinese are not great with maintenance. Actually not sure if they have this word in the dictionary:-). What I should pay attention to when buying a second hand Tenere (2nd gen)? I mainly travel with my wife as pillion passenger. Is this bike suitable for traveling 2up? Piotr, swietny film. Bardzo pomocny. Bylbym wdzieczny za wszelkie porady przed zakupem.

    So ALL dislikes are ...
    1. Weight, but it is not heavier than other bikes in the same segment.
    2. Drive shaft seals. But I think you just had bad luck with that, because I hadn't heard that before. (And I've heard that with a GS you can have some serious issues with the driveshaft as well.)
3.Sensitivity of a pressure cleaner? Seriously??? This is not a Yamaha problem.
    4. Wind shield. Okay you didn't like it. But it was not even that bad that you bother to change it. And there are several aftermarket shields available. And that's more of a personal thing than a real dislike in my opinion.
    So overall very good.

The problem with the Gs driveshaft is bmw says it’s not a serviceable part apart from drive oil changes. Lies. The splines and U joints need to be greased every 12k. Not hard to do but if you don’t it will fail much sooner. With good maintenance you will still have to replace it every 100k minimum. If there is any side to side slack in rear wheel the u joint is going bad. Still Not near as good of a design as a s10 which is bulletproof like most anything Yamaha. Ted porter at beemer bone shop is coming out with a gs driveshaft where you can replace worn parts instead of having to replace the whole shaft. He has been making one for years on the older gs bikes with good reviews.

Use wet micro fiber towels and then detailer to clean outside. Only clean inside by hand. Never "car" or pressure wash a motorcycle. After each long ride clean fork tubes and discs with alcohol. Use rainX on windshield. Change shaft drive oil every other engine oil change. Lucas heavy duty 80-90w shaft oill. Lucas motorcycle oil additive will quiet engine and improve shifting. Direct fuel injection can build carbon in engine. Accelerate while riding to 6500 rpms occasionally or use safe fuel injection cleaner. A good run to 200kph will clear the carbon out. Ride bike every two weeks, if possible. Running only not good. Maintenance is cheap, repairs are expensive. Those who added full crash bars, aux. lights, tank bags, etc. are the ones complaining about top heavy experience. Yamaha made the COG low. Altering bike has consequences.

Good review, thank you for sharing. I had a 2017 Africa Twin and very much enjoy it. I found the build quality was superb, the only two things I did not like about the AT were chain drive and did not have tubeless tires. Now for some folks, tubeless tires are not an issue and the top of the line AT now has tubeless tires. I sold my AT and I am now in the market for a used bike....I looked at used R1200 GS but the prices are insane and honestly, I do not trust the build quality. The bike that I'm now looking at is the Super Tenere (hands down) the best bike in this segment in my option.

Yeah, I'm in the market for my first poly-cylinder adventure bike and I keep bouncing between a used AT or used ST. I have a 450 for hard enduro so I'd like something I can take on a long trip and not be afraid of taking a dirt road. I edge towards the ST because of the cruise on newer models and road wheels.

Power washers are bad news for bikes. I make sure I stand well back whilst cleaning mine so I don't force water into places it would go with normal driving. On a sad not I believe the T12 has now been discontinued due to Euro5. There are rumours of a T9 to replace it.

I enjoyed your review. My Super Tenere is also 10 years old (2011 model), and I have it for 9 years. Almost 60 000km on the clock. I also had an oil leak on the diff a while ago. Fork seals were replaced a year ago. I run it now on Michelin Anakee Adventure tyres. I don't have any complaints about the bike, and I love riding it.

25,000 miles (~40,000km), 6 years: Have had the well-known 'hard-start' issue, both front fork stanchions rusted so both had to be replaced as they caused the fork seals to leak, rear wheel oil seal has never leaked (I changed my final drive oil every year), battery weak after 5 years so replaced it, I never wash my bike so have not had any rust/spark plug issues, Yamaha screen could be better, headlight wiring harness replaced under warranty, seat is very good, stable at very high speed.
    Would I buy another? Yes.

Just bought a 2013 S10 with low miles and low cost.
A few glitches in the first few hundred km and that was not unexpected.
Looking forward to racking up 6-figures of miles/Km in he next several years.

All that was great to hear. Your review at 90,000kms, mine currently at 40,000kms. Was debating on the T7 but knowing I should be good to 100,000kms just reminded me of the lack of “Drama” associated with this bike. Best bike I’ve ever had, and so I’ll keep it for another 40,000kms at least. I did a review of mine when there weren’t any on the internet. There is value to your comments for all of us...current riders and perspective buyers. Thanks.

I agree that it is a heavy bike. I had a 2013 basic ST, then upgraded to an ES in 2015. Bought it used, it had 9,000 miles. I've had zero service issues (but for tires). I don't use a pressure washer! On the rear end, I've changed the rear end oil every 20,000 miles Ooops, I did think of one, I've replaced headlights on occasion. At least three in my 50,000 miles.

I'm curious what was causing the rear shaft seals to fail. I put 98,170km on my first '17 S10 with no shaft drive issues at all (wasn't a pavement queen). That bike was very sound. I did one valve check (in spec) and plug replacement and that was it. Original fork seals, battery, rear shock, rotors, brake fluid, clutch fluid and coolant. Build quality was excellent. That said my second '19 S10 had a bad ETCV from the factory and need a Throttle Body replacement, otherwise great.

@@Teneretraveler Actually I avoid highways if at all possible. Probably about 5% highway, 10-15% dirt/gravel. I live in New England and ride year round. I am still waiting to get my '19 back as the throttle body is on back order.

Can you recommend tires for mainly road use (perhaps 80/20-ish?) that are quiet and have good grip?
